Imagine choosing war thong over the superior combat kilt

Me increase number. Me recieve dopamine.
Also, I like when games also reflect mechanical improvement with some kind of flavour. Ie, if you're as strong as ten men, that should be apparent in a way that makes people treat you with some amount of caution/admiration. I wish more games gave little fluff incentives to their feat equivalents.

I think the best progression (at least for discord west marches) is getting a mini progression every session, or a "full" level up every 3-4 sessions. If the system allows it, I would go for the first one

In my history of tabletop rpgs, I have come across different development systems. In my opinion, the threshold and gradual milestone systems are similar. In one you level up when you gain enough experience, in the other when your DM decides you have gained enough experience.
From an aesthetic point of view, I prefer the experience pool system that you can spend however you want. This system reflects your progression both game-mechanically and within the game world.
But, personally, I prefer the leveling system, regardless of threshold or milestone. In particular, first edition of pathfinder. As you level up, you progress in class, but you can also customize your character with skill points and feats. I also like it because I see a limit to how much a character can develop and it makes me think ahead about how I see my character.

This isn’t relevant to this video but I have a question for you. How original does a game need to be to justify its existence?

Not terribly, if the entire OSR Industry exists by effectively mircoediting the same game to oblivion, as long as you add your own "Spice" to it, it's fine.

After doing a few genre-focused microgames, I've come to find that I really like dual progression. Like in We Need A Hero (Power Rangers) the power of the hero's transformations grow at a steady rate earning milestones after each Monster of the Week (or slower for longer seasons), where as the civilian forms earn development points (even use that term because Character Development) when they achieve personal or team goals outside of the monster fighting aspect of play.

My preference is more horizontal progression than vertical one. For example I wish that the systems that are powered by the apocalypses would only grand new moves instead of stat increases. Similar with gear, I prefer magic items in D&D that give the characters abilities and not some numeric bonus to some combat statistics.

Didn’t one of the LotR games have magic items scale with level as part of your advancement? That seems like a neat halfway between gear and normal level advancement

The horrible thing I didn't mention really in the video is that you CAN technically merge some of these together into a Frankenvancement method.
God be kind to whoever wants to balance those spinning plates though.

Yeah, I'm looking at making a threshold- Milestone-guided poll-gear up system, which seemed reasonable 20 minutes ago...
