    It is time for the newest instalment in that beloved cinematic automotive UA-cam experience where we film practical cars that can be bought for less than £1,000 in a manner befitting of their inexpensive value! This may go horribly wrong (and frequently does)...
    This time, as we test a 2011 Kia Picanto (SA) 1.1 Strike, we get rather excited for no particular reason, discuss cupholders, drive a fuel-efficient car in Edinburgh, deal with a slightly less than desirable clutch and drone on about very little of any importance at all. Nothing untoward, then...

    This takes me back to when I had my 2010 Kia Picanto 1.1 Domino, with front fog lights and rear parking sensors (which probably weren’t needed on a car that small). It was an epic little first car, didn’t go wrong and was cheap as chips to buy and run. I hope it’s serving someone really well! Great video, as always!

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      Thank you, sir! Yes, I don't think parking sensors are necessary on one of these, but someone may find them useful. Glad you enjoyed the video.

  • @scottishcarenthusiastsandtrain

    Great little review Sir, I totally agree with the clutch, have driven a mark 2 Picanto that belongs to my wife's friend and the clutch sounds exactly the same, very realible little cars and very popular.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      Yes, the clutch cable probably just needs adjusting a bit in this one. The Hyundai i10 I drove last year was even worse...

    I apologise Sir. I have jumped the queue. Was saving this video but alas, I could wait no longer to hear your verdict.
    The Picanto that my Wife owned was a 2009 Picanto 1 model with the 1.0 litre 4 cylinder. The only option was that beautiful Black Mica paint.
    The Picanto 1 had a CD player and electric front windows but no central locking or even a clock.
    Not a problem as she bought a clock in Halfords that stuck onto the top of the dashboard and from the driver's seat it was child's play to lock all the doors without even stretching.
    The performance was quite adequate and the car was pressed into 200 to 300 mile journeys without complaint or discomfort.
    After 2 years and 25,000 faultless miles my Wife traded it in for a 2011 New Model Picanto 1 with the 1.0 litre 3 cylinder engine, central locking and a 7 year Warranty.
    These Picantos really are hidden gems of private transport.

      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому

      Excellent, sir! I think the 1.0 probably only existed to differentiate the models in the range in terms of lowering the starting price of the Picanto compared with others, but of course, as is the case with my uncle's Skoda Rapid Spaceback, for some people the base model is all they need.

      Yes, they seem to be enjoying something of a renaissance at the moment as a cheaper choice.

      Sir, it was a very busy day in Edinburgh! I barely stopped the whole time, but I did take a moment to admire the suitability of this 11 year old Kia for nipping around the city.

    In the 2010s while I had my forbidden fuel powered Nissan Almera N16 I did consider one of these earlier Picantos as a replacement. I even bought a brochure for it off eBay to research. However, I kept the Almera for much longer than originally intended.
    I prefer these and the Hyundai equivalent over the C1/107/Aygo because they felt more like a proper car with rear windows that can actually be wound down and less cost cutting.
    Picantos and Hyundai i10s sold well during the 2009/10 scrappage scheme. Not sure why Kia bothered with the 1.0 engine when the 1.1 was marginally better. 🤔

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +2

      Yes, I think the 1.0 simply existed to be below the 1.1, and therefore people who wanted the cheapest 1.0 model would be enticed to spend a bit more on the 1.1 when they realised how slow and basic it was. A bit like the Sandero Access, which was actually quite rare, but they allowed Dacia to advertise the Sandero for a really low price, and then get most people to buy the next trim up when they saw how basic it was...

    Oh dear, having just acquired an 05 auto due to the London ulez rip off i feel hard done by as i paid £1200 ! Thankfully she's only covered 36k from new. Mine has electric door mirrors, all four electric windows, air conditioning.
    I must say it's fine for the daily commute, actually feels quite nippy from 0 - 30 which surprises me. Seems good on fuel but a bit early to say. Hard to explain but a very characterful little car.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  11 місяців тому

      That is not really a problem, I think that this one is worth a bit more than £1,000 given the way secondhand car prices are these days! I think yours would have been the top-of-the-range amongst the early Picantos. Thank you very much indeed for watching and commenting!

    Just a note and it does cause issues still today. There is a known issue with the crankshaft sprockets and it also effects the i10 and the MK2 Amica and Getz. The sprocket isn't keyed and it wears the nose of the crank away and the first sign of problems is lack of power and the ECU logs misfires. So becareful when seeing ones with misfires for sale.
    Fix is a new crank or if your lucky you can weld a new sprocket onto the crank but doesn't always fix it.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому

      Thank you very much indeed! Interesting that this is a common issue with the Epsilon engine which I have not come across before. You are right that it would affect the 1.1 Getz, Amica and i10, as they all have the same engine.

    Whoever thought those Kias are so durable. Saw a lot of them back in early 10's, all are gone for now even if driven by an old lady.

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj Рік тому +1

      Very cheap cars with relatively expensive parts always end up being scrapped early - it's down to being relegated to bangernomics status very early in life, and little to do with reliability.
      Conversely things like Golfs trundle on, costing their owners a small fortune in bills due to high resale values.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому +1

      I have driven a couple of Mark V Golfs, a Golf Plus and a Mark VI Golfs and although they are much more sophisticated than the Picantos, for sheer toughness, I think these Kias are a bit better.

    These were very similar to the Getz and Accent underneath I believe. I had one as a loan car when the Accent was in for service, and I could see the similarities. As to the clutch, I hated the Accent clutch because it had too much slop in the bite - I much prefer a nice, positive cable clutch where you can control it by just turning your ankle/heel a little rather than having to lift your whole bloody foot as ifs common in a lot of newer cars.

    • @lloydvehicleconsulting
      @lloydvehicleconsulting  Рік тому

      Yes, definitely not the same platform, but there would be a bit of common engineering there, I am sure. The 1.1 is the same as in the Getz, as I have driven one with that engine before. The clutches on Hyundais and Kias at this time weren't the best, however in a first generation i10 or Picanto, they are definitely cable operated.

    • @jasejj
      @jasejj Рік тому

      @@lloydvehicleconsulting Actually looking into it the similarities are closer than you (or I) thought... The Picanto (and first i10) is the SA platform which is a shortened TB platform that the Getz/Accent use, so in effect they are almost the same!
