Been saying (rather: thinking) this for a long time. Maybe one day Seiko will have gotten trough their apparently massive stockpiles of Hardlex. It's mineral glass mixed with Asian herbs. Makes you Stronger! At least their stock of 7S movements seems to be finally drying up...

Keeping share holders happy? By making a limited edition 1.100 piece run of SLA037 at $6.300? Let's say they sold only 50.000 copies of a lower spec $500 version of this instead - the R&D would even cost a lot less on the cheaper version not to mention the machining/assembly per unit. You do the math!

While these movements are great, they're not shouldn't be in watches costing $400 - $1000. Seiko's are now overpriced and I can get a better deal on Swiss Autos on the grey market. This is actually sold on San Martin's Official Taobao shop in China with multiple options.
Firstly, you get a choice of logos, San Martin/LJM/Tiger Shark or having a sterile dial etc.
(Even have the option of a custom logo but you have to engage the seller/San Martin)
Secondly, you get the choice of glass(Mineral or Sapphire crystal) so both versions do exist.
Thirdly, you get the choice of a normal caseback (Depends on which logo you chose) or a custom caseback.
Forthly, you get the choice of strap (Metal/silicon).
The Standard San Martin 62 MAS comes with a Green, Gray and Blue sunburst dial, 316L steel case and C3 Lume, so a great steal.
Their off-shoot/affiliate Sharkey/Heimdallr too sells this 62 MAS Homage with a definite Sapphire crystal.
So if you want to buy this watch and are dead-set on Sapphire, buy it straight from San Martin or Heimdallr and not from the Dropshippers on Ali.

Excellent review. Like a lot of Seiko fans, I've always liked the styling of the 62mas. So, after watching this about three times, I've just ordered a San Martin 62mas. Can't wait for it to arrive! I hope Seiko listen to you, Jody. Like you, I have no idea where they think they're going with their current product range.

Hey Jody, how about an 62MAS homage battle between the San Martin and the 54!
I also think owing a 62MAS homage is the exception to the “no homages rule”, especially when it comes with a Seiko movement.

I have the blue dial San Martin, the Proxima (himq) black dial and the Merkur 62mas black dial. Sla017 too $$$, sbdc051 to big. They are all amazing but the Merkur is the definite standout and my clear favorite. Better detailing, fit, finish and a matching date wheel. Another excellent video to be followed by F1 Spa Free Practice highlights.👍

I bought a Heimdallr (same as Merkur, San Martin, Sharkey etc) Tuna homage, and it's great! Sapphire, rock solid bezel action, really nice finishing, NH35, SS bezel insert, pretty nice lume. And all that for $155 shipped via DHL (arrived in 5 days from china!). I bought directly from Heimdallr, they run discounts all the time, and they have a nice selection of homage watches. At this price range, it's the best deal ever.

I have checked all the ‘Seiko’ boxes that I care (at this time) to check...an Alpinist, Flightmaster, an SNG, a turtle, a SKX 007 and 009, a Samaria, a Kinetic and a Solar ‘Tuna’...Of late I have been rounding out my collection of Seiko Homages! In search of the homages, that are in my opinion, are better than the reissues that’s Seiko has been releasing...This is one of them!… watches like this have forced me to turn in my ‘Seiko-fanboy’ membership. I've got one of these with full lume bezel and applied ljm logo. (older logo of San Martin) stuck this baby on a shark mesh, its fighting 1st place in terms of wrist time for me. Mine also has a stiff bezel - perhaps more than yours, it often has to be taken off wrist to turn it properly. Glad to see you like it jody! BTW - if you want more risk and complications, more money can be saving buying this on taobao (you'll need a agent tho)

Awesome video Jody! I think Seiko is still suffering from QC issues and dealer losses at least here in the states. I’m wondering if they’re just trying to stay afloat? If you think about it the separation from Grand Seiko and the focus on designer watches instead of fallowing they’re heritage makes me think Seiko might be in trouble! Maybe if seppuku was still practiced the company would be on track?

Great points made in your review! Speaking of sapphire in particular In my own experience; I bought a cheap $20 "June & Ed" :) brand chronograph dress watch WITH FLAT SAPPHIRE! Why can't Seiko get away from their Hardlex and use sapphire in all their watches! I bought a s Seiko 5 field watch that scratched the first week I wore it, and I doubt I'll ever by another Seiko in the future without sapphire. (The June & Ed Chrono is now $59.99 on Amazon)

I'm more than happy to wear San Martin. I've got an homage tuna and have been eyeing that same watch u just got for awhile. I've scratched my Seiko itch with an affordable save the ocean. It's a good watch, but no sapphire or ceramic bezel insert.
Why should I pay thousands, which I can't afford and refuse to pay, when I can get a quality Chinese made case with Seiko movement!? Seiko just refuses to upgrade their watches and make them affordable to most everyone when it comes to reissues. They could've upgraded the skx as you've said. Instead they discontinued them, only to reissue them one or two decades down the road for thousands of dollars.
All these guys that say they would never buy a Chinese watch, guess what? Seiko is cased in China and so are some Swiss watches, so why not cut out that huge mark up?
