- In the depths of the Amazon Basin, the achachairú, a highly prized tropical fruit, has been cultivated for generations.
But the fruit is grown on the greatest scale not in its homeland of Bolivia, but on the other side of the world - in North Queensland.
Bruce and Helen Hills's achacha plantation in Giru, south of Townsville, is home to more than 15,000 trees.
It's one of the world's largest commercial plantations of the exotic fruit that the Hills decided to grow after realising North Queensland and the Amazon Basin had a similar climate.
"This is the very first commercial achacha plantation in the world,” Ms Hill says.
“In the Amazon Basin they grow them in very small amounts, maybe just three or four trees in their backyard."
The fruit, which Ms Hill says to pronounce like the dance "cha cha" with an "a" in front, has been a labour of love for the couple.
"I'm sure there are some people that have it in their backyards but once people find out it takes seven or eight years to get fruit, they lose interest," she says.
"We were stupid enough to do it, we waited, and so we're the biggest grower in the world."

Wonderful…bravo to the entrepreneurs for upvaluing another gift of the earth.
All I know is something about that fruit improves my eczema greatly and also my overall skin quality became very vibrant
I am growing these outside in Southern California. Seem very cold tolerant and also very attractive. Mine are around five years old now, so we'll see.
This couple was very clever in their vision and marketing. Good on them.
Nice One Helen. 🎉
Hello dear! I just watched the video and I love it!! I’m bolivian from Santa Cruz de la Sierra, I just to ask you DONT THROW AWAY THE ACHACHAIRU SKIN! Sending our love for all of you from Allentown,Pennsylvania ❤🇺🇸❤🇧🇴❤🇦🇺❤
Nice, keep up your good work .❤
Looks like I need to head up to Giru to have a taste.
I have a 3-year old Garcenia humilis growing in my Florida food forest. It is a healthy tree of about 1.3 m in hight, and still probably 5 years from fruiting. I also have a G. intermedia (lemmondrop mangosteen) that is only about a year in the ground. But it should fruit in about 3 to 4 years. Watching this makes me look forward to tasting achacha, or achachairu, when my tree starts producing.
very interesting fruit so if you craft cuttings on achacha seedlings they fruit earlier right
I had them when I visited Australia 11 year ago and it never forgot them. I’m visiting Australia again and I am desperately searching for them. No one in Melbourne has heard of them. Help!
What kind of weather does this fruit need to grow?
They are delicious, but there is only 1mm of flesh basically around the seed. We need to selectively breed the best flesh ones or something, maybe cross with another garcinia
Yes will be smart to selective Them and used older rootstock from stronger Garcinia family too help it grow faster and specially set fruits earlier than growing straight from seed grafting technic is amazing 😍
Anyone seen them in Adelaide? Says they’re sold wholesale in all capitals other than NT, WA and Tassie but never seen any. Even at the Adelaide markets
We got some today at the Adelaide Markets just to try. $68 per kg.
I can barely wait to get fruit on my trees. At least I have lots of grafted mango, sapodilla and dragonfruit until the achachairu produces fruit.
How can I buy a LOT in Brisbane?
Achacha at Sydney on 12-1-2025 , 1Kg =$18 aud
How long before they have a pesticide resistant bug destroying all these because they are mono cropped?
They are very resistant to plagues
Se llama “Achachairu”
Excuse me, this is the largest grower in the world. How many do you grow?
@@carson911 She said that in the video, and that they shortened the name, so he's not wrong. Didn't you watch the video?
Asi es,la Señora explicaba lo dificil de pronunciar,es usted Boliviana?🇧🇴
