Warcraft II - Human 1 (Orchestral Cover)

- An orchestral cover of the first Human theme from Warcraft 2 using high-end sample libraries. I've always been a big fan of the soundtrack. I used to put the CD-ROM into my audio CD player to bask in the epicness of the music. Unfortunately, since the soundtrack was never officially released, my dream of creating a licensed WC2 cover album may never come to fruition.

i love warcraft 2 soundtracks...shame they don't get much love...
Yeah. It didn't even get an official release.
Now these Orc and Human themes were re-edited for Shadowlands starting zones, many of us who didn't know about them, or didn't remember wheeeeeere in the world have ever heard them (my memory sucks, duh), do actually look for them and value them like they should be.
Oh, I had no idea the Shadowlands soundtrack had some of the WC2 themes. Thanks for letting me know.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic Yeah, it was a low kick to nostalgia, lol, like when they brought a little of Black Rock n' Roll for Warlords of Draenor main theme, now they kinda made a new version of these for the starting zone for new players, for the alliance on "Human 1" and for the horde on "Orc 1" both from warcraft 2.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic in hots there are rock covers of this, faster wc2 music is on pet battles, and there is this theme when youre seathong for a game in heartstone, so they didnt forget about it
Man, haven't played the game in years but immediately recognized the theme.

This theme is buried deep in a ton of Warcraft music. I think you can hear it in the Forsaken Undercity theme.

This soundtrack gives me chills. Warcraft 2 is such a classic. Awesome. Really awesome. Thank you for that delicious piece of life.
This track is awesome. It had just enough tension to evoke the feeling of early rushed building. It had enough mystery for exploring the fog of war, and enough grandeur to make you feel like a badass with 12 footman marching through the forest to slay some orcs. Great job! Love your work!
Thank you! The composer certainly knew what he was doing. The soundtrack matched the game perfectly.

Wowww wasn’t expecting this. Pleasantly surprised
Enhancing the piece with modern libraries while maintaining the spirit of the composer's original composition. A subtle art and Malcolm Robinson has amassed a great body of work on his channel doing just that. Big fan. Let's hope he keeps bringing us these gems from the 90's.

I like what you did with this track. Was definitely my favourite when I was playing Warcraft. Excellent job as usual. I’m curious how a game studio hasn’t tried to take you on to work with them yet (unless you already do) however if they haven’t then I’m glad to. You get to do your own thing and not be tied down to what a given studio expects you to do
Thanks! I've never tried to get a job with a game studio. I suppose if that's what I really wanted, I'd upload my newer compositions and market myself as a composer who's available for freelance work. Instead, I'm happy working on my own projects and setting my own deadlines.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic I’m sure a lot of people are happy for that to. I know I am. Set your own schedules and keep producing the work the way you want it done without anyone standing over you telling you to do differently
I'd hate to lose your work on here but man, you got talent and... it doesn't seem right to say it's wasted here, because it DEFINITELY isn't -- maybe as far as your own interests go it is.
Either way you have a committed fan base here waiting eagerly for each new arrangement.

Next maybe Starcraft - Terran 1? I wonder if you'd manage to improve that masterpiece somehow
Thanks! The Starcraft soundtrack is great, but I don't think my style/skill set would be right for it. It's interesting that some of the Starcraft tracks were composed by Glenn Stafford, the Warcraft II composer.
Nice job! This is my favorite soundtrack of all time! I've been listening it since 1995 and this is a great resampled version! You should do the whole soundrack.
Thanks! I'd really like to do the whole soundtrack, minus the short victory/game over screen music.
Extremely good. Also speaks to the quality of the original arrangement that I couldn't tell the difference between the two from memory, and had to actually go back and listen to the original in order to compare.
It speaks to how well Malcolm stays faithful to the spirit of the original composition with his modern arrangements. He updates all the instruments with high-end libraries but doesn't lose anything. That's why his work "sounds like" the original, but better. If he's working with an excellent composition that just suffered a bit from the technology of the time, Malcolm can come in and work his magic.
Excellent work on this remix! I spent so many hours on Warcraft 2 in the late 90's. Wish they had continued the mainline series.
Hooooly shit this one is a classic!

Man this is incredible. I just got Opus diamond and have been loving it. Would you mind sharing what sort of mic positions do you like to use?
I had been using your Chrono Trigger stuff as reference thinking it was an actual orchestra looool.
Thanks for the comment! I mostly use the default mic position, but I sometimes mix in other mics depending on the piece and the instrument. For strings, I'll add in close mics if I want the sound to pop a little more or if I'm going for a drier studio sound. The divisi patches are also pretty good for an even smaller/tighter sound than the full close mic, but they have a more limited use because in Play, they have to be loaded in a separate patch from the other mics. I'm not sure if Opus is different in that regard. For brass, I use the default decca mics. I experimented with the other mics for a bit and I remember thinking that the mid mics had this sticky-sounding attack that I wasn't a big fan of, but I thought the close mics had some potential for certain situations. I've used brass surround/vintage as alternatives to decca when there's a panning problem in the decca sustain sample or legato transition. For woodwinds, I use the default mid mics. I only occasionally switch to decca or surround if I want the sound to be more in the background. For percussion, I'm a bit more flexible with mic positions and I often use a combination of close, mid, and decca depending of the instrument/mix. Overall, in a typical project, I probably use the default mics 95% of the time. Hope this helps!
No problem! I'll answer your questions below:
1. I prefer to group together all the instruments that are playing the same part rather than grouping instruments of the same section. I start by creating folders for each part and giving them names like MELODY, BASSLINE, etc. Then, I load a bunch of instruments from various libraries using track presets and put them in their folders. Then, much later, if I need to, I'll combine the tracks from one group into a group channel/stem and apply processing and automation to it. I only use stem processing to solve a problem or create a specific effect, not as a default orchestral template or anything. If I don't need a stem for a specific purpose, I'll just mix each track individually and use "groups" purely for organization and muting/soloing. If I were to route each instrument to a section stem, I'd have a lot less freedom in processing a group of different instruments playing the same part, so the tradeoff isn't worth it for me. It can get a bit tricky when one instrument plays different parts at different times. In that case, I just duplicate the track, put them in different folders, and remove the unused MIDI data.
2. As for gain staging, I've never assumed that EWHO has any kind of internal consistency in its levels. Maybe it's supposed to, but I've always tweaked the levels of each patch manually as I add them. Even when I combine patches of different articulations of the same instrument, I often have to bump up one of them by 5dB or so. These levels may have been changed in the Opus edition. If we assume that the library is supposed to have consistent levels right out of the box, a simple explanation for the differences you've heard could be that brass is extremely loud and overpowering at it's highest timbre (especially the 6FH, 3TB and 3TP in HO), so you typically wouldn't have CC1 at 127 for the entire piece. The woodwinds use mid mics by default and are solo instruments (in the pre-Opus version), so perhaps they've been boosted a little or the mid mics make them sound more prominent. Anyway, I have the faders for each of my track prefets set at a level that's roughly consistent with my other libraries as a starting point, but then I make huge moves as necessary after I add them. I never touch the main fader within an instance of Play.
Hope this answers your questions.
I just had an eargasim.
"For lordaeron!"
This track is great! Have you thought about making more original music? You mentioned in the comments of your battle music video that you wanted to redo it and was wondering if that had ever happened.
Sorry for the late reply. I have a bunch of original music that I composed but never uploaded. I'm not sure when I'll get around to it, but hopefully I'll start uploading some of it after I release my FF6 albums. I tried revising that battle theme to give it more of an orchestral rock sound, but so far, it's not sounding quite right. I have another battle theme, though, that I think is sounding really good. Not sure which one will get uploaded first.
@@MalcolmRobinsonMusic awesome I'm eagerly awaiting then!
