  • If you see one R-rated talking dog comedy this summer, make it "Strays." Christy enjoyed this movie a lot more than special guest Tim Grierson (Screen International, @timgrierson), but both agree that its bizarre humor streak is inspired, as are the visual effects. Will Ferrell provides the voice of a scruffy terrier named Reggie, who winds up on the streets when his horrible owner abandons him. Jamie Foxx voices Bug, a swaggering Boston terrier who teaches him how to be a stray. Isla Fisher, Randall Park and Will Forte co-star. Directed by Josh Greenbaum ("Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar"). In theaters now.

I expected a funny, cute, and raunchy comedy about dogs. I didn’t expect an allegory on toxic relationships which really hit me emotionally. A great movie!

Christy, love that you've thought about what your dog would sound like if he could speak like a human. My cat has a raspy squeak of a meow, so I've always imagined she would sound like Lauren Bacall or even Janis Joplin.

Baxter is probably a regular chatterbox when you're not around.
Tim looks like Bradley Cooper as Leonard Bernstein, but ironically not like Bradley or Leonard individually.

I recently watched Cocaine Bears on Prime and was blown away by how well-made it was. I generally don't like "scare me" movies, but CB's gags were funny and the tense moments were stretched to a "just right" length. Also, Margo Martindale was a hoot. I generally don't like "heartwarming family films," but Strays sounds like it dodges that bullet. Looking forward to seeing it.

Right? It was fun. Margo Martindale is always a hoot.

Obviously comedies are subjective, but I also think it depends a lot on being in the mood for comedy as well. You have to go into comedies willing to go with it and not deconstruct too much.

This is one of the worst movies I have ever seen. It is like a kids movie where everyone says the F-word every minute, and if that wasn't enough they have shit jokes. There were things in this film I had to cover my eyes to keep from seeing. It was like someone decided to try to get the first x-rated comedy based on language alone and I bet they came damn close. I bet where were folks at the MPAA who considered getting into a new line of work after having to watch this, or perhaps they said, "Tell you what! We'll give you an R rating if we don't have to finish watching this!" What a horrible experience. Rather than have a character say something funny they had them say the F word instead because they thought that was the same thing. Unbelievable.

Well, pushing it was definitely the point, but it had some things of substance to say, too. Sorry it didn't work for you.

4/5 for me. I’ll admit “Joy Ride” is a better 🎥 but during the 💩 jokes there’s a zoom out shot that had me 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 to the point where I had to wipe away tears and audience members were laughing at my laughter. And act 3 had the perfect song choice 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

I'm surprised Seth Rogen isn't involved in this. This seems like the textbook "What if [thing that doesn't curse] cursed?" comedy that he and Goldberg drop every few years.

Cocaine Bear was much more clever than its simple premise hinted, and had some strong funny memorable characters. If Cocaine Bear is an indicator for this movie, as Tim says, than it must be a really good funny movie.

Hey I just watch STRAYS. It was a HOOT! I really enjoyed the movie. I could not stop laughing. (I guess I am silly). It was not as raunchy as I expected. Yes, it had some profane language and gross stuff (what dogs do), but I feel like it did not go over the top. Those poor bunnies.🤣🤣🤣

Hi, are you planning on reviewing Gal Gadot's Heart of Stone Netflix movie? :) Couldn't agree more with Tim on Will Ferrell, has been a bit of a 'choice' in a bunch of movies lately inc the Daddy's Home movies, Get Hard and the truly awful Holmes & Watson. He needs something like how 'Can You Ever Forgive Me' was for Melissa McCarthy!

......... uhhhh, stop, sausage party did have unpaid labor of the animation studio. Yeah, Tim may have a point about point about ideas.... but why the one where the animators didn't get paid for doing so much junk. Like you could go into THOUSANDS of way to explore ideas.... but you had to pick the one that looks like trash and didn't pay for it's labor?
I'm a sucker for talking dogs too, and this is a cool idea, because just reminded in Milo and Otis they threw a cat off a cliff and that looked crazy. Or Snake in Eagle's shadow.... that cat didn't like fighting that cobra. I'm a bit more with Christy, I smile the idea of talking dog, puppets, cartoon, or anything, they are avatars of us and our ideals.
I made so many faces on sausage, that was too much dude.

Small piece of unsolicited constructive criticism as a WTF fan. Please make your comment replies more elaborated on. I think it's better to reply to fewer comments more personably and thoroughly then replying to several with things like "Thanks, enjoy the movie." or "Glad you liked it." Most of the replies feel copy/paste or like a reply bot (obviously that isn't the case). I think there's a balance where you can avoid parasocial interactions without leaving seemingly lifeless and dismissive replies. Just my two cents and meant with total peace, love and complete respect.

I'm with Tim on this one. Saw it in a sneak with a near full audience and yet all those laughs didn't seem to help me get into it a bit more. Way too many of the laughs were already in the trailers so I was definitely left wanting. I was surprised how short it was and made me realize why they started it about 20 mins late (which later just pissed me off).
As to the other movies mentioned, Cocaine Bear worked for me, Barb & Star was nearly painful.

This sounds like a feature-length movie of all the dog tiktoks and instagram reels that have dogs cussing and doing outrageous things. I think I'd rather hear more about Baxter than see the film.

There is nothing creative about a movie consistently using the f word over and over and over and over and over it's very boring and it's not creative and it's been done over and over again this movie was all about sex and the f word. I give it a minus one
