Fantastic video. Great production quality. The R8 V10 RWS is exactly what Audi needed to come out with. An R8 with even more character... Still capable in the wet/snow and the better value/less flashy alternative to the Huracan.... Bravo Audi.
I reckon this current generation R8 is the closest successor to the original nsx that we'll see... A well built supercar from a sensible brand with racing heritage, which you can use everyday, but still challenge the driver.
That proves how good the R8 is in any form, it can be FWD and it will still be awesome (audi pls not) but that also proves how good the Quattro system is, that when you want it, it can be a RWD experience without the fear of spinning out and crashing. Amazing video as always from these guys
shows you´ve never driven a sportscar in your life or even any car for that matter. that´s just an idiotic statement. Proves that Henry nowadays loves anything to please the manufacturers, and that´s it!
Sorry that you both feel that way. I was a big fan of the current R8 while I was at evo, so it would be a little strange if I changed my opinion when I went freelance. I'm quite happy to call out the faults in cars (not that you generally get much thanks for it on UA-cam!) as is proved by the two most recent Porsche films on Carfection. If I stopped criticising cars then there would be little to separate me from a vlogger being paid by the manufacturer, so I'm certainly not about to do that. As for the verdict on this film, I'm not quite sure what the problem is. The quattro version is wonderful and the RWD version is little different, so if the former is great then the latter surely is as well? I point out the differences in the two cars when they are over the limit, but again it's perfectly easy to find the way a good all-wheel drive car holds a slide just as entertaining as the way a RWD car oversteers. You generally just need to finesse the throttle inputs slightly differently.
Great video guys! There was a time when Henry felt like too much of a car nerd too much and didn't come across well as a presenter. I wasn't so keen on watching those videos. Then before or during, Drive Tribe something changed, his personality began to really come through. Now with great cinematography too I thoroughly enjoy every blooming one! One of the best if not the best, presenters and teams this side of a pay wall.
This video production.....muah!!!!! at how delicious it is!!!!! eye-gasmic coupled with great sound design and unique transitions. From @1:24-1:50.....pure GOLD
sigh... I don't see why not for the enthusiasts. Why else get a rear wheel R8; especially since it will definitely increases the risk of death over the quattro.
Its not worth the R&D to make a manual when they'd only sell 3 cars in with manual option. Ferrari 599 was the last ferrari with a manual and sells were so low for the manual option they stopped doing manual ferraris.
again for driving enthusiasts they should've offered them, like BMW still does for some of their M models. And IMO don't think Ferrari is a car for your regular driving enthusiast.
Audi should’ve given this treatment to the new TTRS instead. Lighter, better balanced, RWD and use that extra space for a proper manual transmission behind the glorious 5cyl.
What is more bizarre than how the winter tires work is how un common winter tires are un the UK - Does everything close down in the UK when it snows or what ?
For the first 4 minutes I was wondering how he had such control in a 530 bhp V10 rear wheel drive car in the snow, then he said it has winter tyres. It all makes sense now!
Rumour has it that whilst the next A4 will be based on a stretched Golf platform (like the Passat and Superb), the NEXT generation A6/7/8 will be based on the Porsche Panamera platform and RWD,
Hard to tell, but it looks like the RWD version has narrower front tires. This would probably make it retain some of the understeer that Audis normally have and not have that much of a difference between the two versions. I would like to see how it does with closer to a square setup.
Let's take the AWD version to a dry track, and the RWD one to a slippery one, each where the other would be a better fit for testing dynamics.. Then complain the RWD one has no benefit. Either way, good video as always!
Like I said, joking aside it was still a fantastic video! And I look forward seeing more! I've been watching your content for a while Henry, so I suspect "quality" may be your middle name.
Henry Catchpole kudos to you for not driving this thing into a wall. I would be horrified to drive a v10 RWD supercar on a snow covered track...even with winter tires
Hi Joseph, the older cars used to say quattro on the badge, but that was in reference to the quattro (performance) division of the company. When the quattro division was renamed Audi Sport they changed the badges and so they all say Audi Sport now. Hope that clears it up!
Ha yes, Nogaro Blue. That one color every B5, B6/B7 S4 owner wanted...Audi is a perplexing company. It transitioning it's quattro vehicles to this new "quattro ultra", vw haldex based, pseudo awd drivetrain. Then makes something brilliant like a RWD R8.
Interesting they didnt drop a manual box in there. Anyone looking at the RWS is either a car flipper or an enthusiast; both would surely prefer a manual option.
Adam waste of money in terms of research and development and clearly won't sell enough like the last gen manual. Sometimes you need to stop looking at a car from a enthusiast/consumer mindset and more from a business mindset
Ill say one thing only about Quattro, without it, i might be in a casket. Not being dramatic but grip in winters as harsh as mine, can mean death in a split second, especially on interstates. Ive dodged pile ups and powered through snow deep enough to easily black out my headlights. Glad they did a Rear Wheel R8 though, just to shut up the people running their mouths about understeer.
I think the R8 is the best supercar out right now. Its not the most well balanced, its not the fastest, its not the most radical/best looking. I could go on for hours listing what its not the best at, but I think that's what makes it, in my opinion, brilliant. Sad to see it go soon, but I'm excited for what Audi brings next.
I'd have to really question if the typical driver/owner would really "NEED" a sports car with AWD. For day to day driving. Stop light to stop light driving on city roads. As very few of us live in cities or countries with mountain roads that have S-curves. Nor plan to do any track time. So for most of us I think a naturally aspirated RWD would be ideal. Doesn't need to be a 500HP 911 GT3 but naturally aspirated and RWD. Porsche should put out an "affordable" NA 911. They CAN do it...just a matter of when. And could it be...that there's more "fun factor" driving a RWD (e.g. how a RWD car takes you out of corners)? Having too much tech can dampen the drive. Making a car too "near perfect". Too analytical. Clinical. I'd definitely buy a RWD 911 over one with AWD. Classic 911's were RWD only for a reason. AWD is a tech to help sell cars and for companies to make more money for those that buy into the idea they NEED AWD in a sports car in day to day driving. At their skill level. :)
That test was performed in the dry. Even if you don't get snow you'll still probably see some rain, which during the winter can freeze making sports/all season tires potentially useless when trying to stop
They don't have to ditch it, just made a RWD variant as the base model just like they are doing with the Hurcan now. I'd rather have RWD over AWD anyday, I'm not driving cars like these in the snow or heavy rain anyway.
waitwuttt waste of money in terms of research and development and clearly won't sell enough like the last gen manual. Sometimes you need to stop looking at a car from a enthusiast/consumer mindset and more from a business mindset
thats the thing though people would say the same about a rwd r8 and look we have a rwd r8 now. they shouldve made this car more special too maybe a more track focused r8 more aero less weight etc. maybe it just wouldve been too good compared to the huracan.
best german brand? i mean sure they are doing everything right but look at BMW and Porsche even MB. all doing every thing right maybe even better audi have real tough competition. did you forget that bmw has the m2 m3 m4 m5 m6 and m8? which shits on all of the audi rs line? lol
If you are gonna test a rear wheel drive version and there is a snow storm, wait for a few days for the snow to melt and then test the car. Otherwise, this is a waste of time
I agree that would seem like a logical thing to do, but I'm afraid it's not always as easy as that! If we could have, we would have. As I said in the film, we'll get it back in a few months and take it on a road trip.
Huge credit to Charlie who edited this film. Really chuffed with the way it looks.
Fantastic video. Great production quality. The R8 V10 RWS is exactly what Audi needed to come out with. An R8 with even more character... Still capable in the wet/snow and the better value/less flashy alternative to the Huracan.... Bravo Audi.

James Baggaley this or 570GT/570S
good luck using a McLaren everyday... they don't really like starting on cue & you'll be stepping over that side sill all the time.
Lovely that Henry isn't locked behind a paywall.
editing on this video was on point. you guys always deliver.
Henry, simply just a talented presenter who can talk well whilst negotiating a fast wheel. A feat which many take for granted.
The Editing is a masterpiece on this video. And as always Wolverine kills it.
Ha posh Wolverine
I am so happy that cars like the r8 are keeping naturally aspirated engines
I didn't know those facts about winter tires, thank you 🙋🏻♂️
The editing is insane... btw, the RWS too.
This weather coincidence is pure brilliance!
Awesome video guys 💙💙
HENRY CATCHPOLE
He can have my pole! No need to catch it! What a fitty!
Worst snow in a generation? That's a dusting, Sir.
hertzer2000 right
" RWD or AWD? I just love the R8." What a verdict given that the RWD doesnt seperate itself enough from the AWD car
That proves how good the R8 is in any form, it can be FWD and it will still be awesome (audi pls not) but that also proves how good the Quattro system is, that when you want it, it can be a RWD experience without the fear of spinning out and crashing. Amazing video as always from these guys
NyckLP A RWD car that is too sticky to give a true RWD experience? Sure😂😂😂😂
shows you´ve never driven a sportscar in your life or even any car for that matter. that´s just an idiotic statement. Proves that Henry nowadays loves anything to please the manufacturers, and that´s it!
C6SuperchargedZR1 Yupp hes really lost it since hes gone freelance. What a shame
Sorry that you both feel that way. I was a big fan of the current R8 while I was at evo, so it would be a little strange if I changed my opinion when I went freelance. I proper look forward to Carfection films...not disappointed again
The normally aspirated v10. That's the best thing. I just wish amg would bring back their 6.2l v8.
R8 a stunning looking thing!
Varun Nair does NOT look stunning
Emission laws are turning everything turbo these days.
LegendInThaMakin la cu
Intense Vibrating Cow I think it is!
LegendInThaMakin Yeah man. That's so sad.
this pretty much just proves how good the 4 wheel drive system in behaving like rwd
Great cinematography as always!

Great video, quality work from the film crew... the car is also very nice :)
The editing in this video is absolutely amazing
Amazing video! Think I definitely still prefer the Quattro version for sure!
Hope they will release the fwd version soon
This man is probably my favourite car journalist
This video production.....muah!!!!! at how delicious it is!!!!! eye-gasmic coupled with great sound design and unique transitions. From @1:24-1:50.....pure GOLD
they should've made it manual
Kojy it wouldn't sell well
sigh... I don't see why not for the enthusiasts. Why else get a rear wheel R8; especially since it will definitely increases the risk of death over the quattro.

Audi should’ve given this treatment to the new TTRS instead. Lighter, better balanced, RWD and use that extra space for a proper manual transmission behind the glorious 5cyl.
The can't produce a RWD TT as its engine is mounted transversely. Its possible in everything from the A4/Q5 upwards though.
Great video guys.... shame about the snow.... you’ll have to dust it back off over the summer.
The only thing they need now is a limited manual run! Bring back the gated transmission!
If only! Such a lovely gearshift.
What is more bizarre than how the winter tires work is how un common winter tires are un the UK - Does everything close down in the UK when it snows or what ?
In the south? Yes. In Scotland? How much snow things shut down at varies massively depending on where you are.
True - And btw sorry for generalising about the UK-
Nice tight review with some surprises in the vernacular. Sound too trebley with harsh S'ssss
Excellent. If only it was available with a 6 speed manual!
For the first 4 minutes I was wondering how he had such control in a 530 bhp V10 rear wheel drive car in the snow, then he said it has winter tyres. It all makes sense now!
Rumour has it that whilst the next A4 will be based on a stretched Golf platform (like the Passat and Superb), the NEXT generation A6/7/8 will be based on the Porsche Panamera platform and RWD,
If they do the same with the supposed 2.9tt version R8, that will be a super sleeper (APR tuned) might be able to get the price under 100k
Hard to tell, but it looks like the RWD version has narrower front tires. This would probably make it retain some of the understeer that Audis normally have and not have that much of a difference between the two versions. I would like to see how it does with closer to a square setup.
lovely as always good job fellas - didn't recognise llandow!
Let's take the AWD version to a dry track, and the RWD one to a slippery one, each where the other would be a better fit for testing dynamics.. Then complain the RWD one has no benefit.
Either way, good video as always!
It wasn't really the plan! Sometimes there's nothing you can do about the weather (at least not in the UK).
Like I said, joking aside it was still a fantastic video! And I look forward seeing more! I've been watching your content for a while Henry, so I suspect "quality" may be your middle name.
Thank you - much appreciated.
Henry Catchpole kudos to you for not driving this thing into a wall. I would be horrified to drive a v10 RWD supercar on a snow covered track...even with winter tires
I find it amusing that "the worst snow in the UK in a generation" looks like spring in Minnesota.
Henry, I think the badge on the grill says Audi Sport vs Quattro on the RWD VS Quattro cars.
Hi Joseph, the older cars used to say quattro on the badge, but that was in reference to the quattro (performance) division of the company. When the quattro division was renamed Audi Sport they changed the badges and so they all say Audi Sport now. Hope that clears it up!
Some say the RWS car is spiky on the limit, others that there’s more front-end feel and bite. Is the truth down to who’s driving?
Ha yes, Nogaro Blue. That one color every B5, B6/B7 S4 owner wanted...Audi is a perplexing company. It transitioning it's quattro vehicles to this new "quattro ultra", vw haldex based, pseudo awd drivetrain. Then makes something brilliant like a RWD R8.
Spot on review Carfection team!!! Subscribed and thumbs up.
Growing up in New York it's funny to me that someone wouldn't know how a winter tire works or why you might want one...
One of the "Great Cars"
Quality video!
Wow I never thought I'd say this but those body-color side blades really don't work.
Oh no! Snow storm in the UK! So what. Still waiting for first snow storm in Newport Beach, Ca.
Who knew Wolverine was so good at car videos?
Wasn't he reviewing for Drive tribe?
Can anyone tell me if the Frunk is any bigger? The RWD Huracan has no more Frunk space even though there’s less drivetrain.
Seen Through Haggis probably not. Vw doesn't change the trunk space on the lambos or audis when they make rwd versions.
First RWD Audi in 50 years.
Was expecting for the car to go sideways... Awesome video though! As always!
Interesting they didnt drop a manual box in there. Anyone looking at the RWS is either a car flipper or an enthusiast; both would surely prefer a manual option.
The R8 hasn’t had a manual for several years now...
Adam waste of money in terms of research and development and clearly won't sell enough like the last gen manual. Sometimes you need to stop looking at a car from a enthusiast/consumer mindset and more from a business mindset
Ahhhh, bliss. One day I’ll be able to rag an R8 in snow……
Henry, you are a only lucky son of a gun.
I would expect TS860 and not few year older TS830 tyre would be fitted.
Now i want a gated shifter manual one
Audi R8 Balboni edition
It’s about time
I really think these cars are being slept on...
So its slower than a Quattro variant now?
Yes but it’s lighter. So it’s a trade off.
the Audi R8 was always a rwd biased awd car, so good move on their part. Also how much does it weight with Quattro gone?
Saves 50kg without the quattro.
If you watched the video you’d know.
LegendInThaMakin lol I guess I missed it.
Wow what a video!! 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
they should have made an RWD unlimited Entry R8, maybe even with a V6 Turbo - and a V10 640HP RWD Manual Monster.
2020. Henry is my David Attenborough
That v10! God.
Thank you
Well... I love IT!!!!
Audi should make a T-bar roof it would look great
I'd have to really question if the typical driver/owner would really "NEED" a sports car with AWD. For day to day driving. Stop light to stop light driving on city roads. But it begs the question, why wouldn't you just get the Huracan 580-2?
I don't understand what people are complaining about the lambos are also all wheel drive
If you do not have snow, you do not need winter tires. Tested by EE: ua-cam.com/video/TJsV2ORMsms/v-deo.html
*just* posted that! I found that video very interesting....
That test was performed in the dry. Even if you don't get snow you'll still probably see some rain, which during the winter can freeze making sports/all season tires potentially useless when trying to stop
Tu je quattro👏💪
Audi needs to make a base r8 rws with a V8
Henry, you call that the worse snow? You Brit don't know what snow all about. Come to Canada and you will know what winter is really like.
This should be a standard model, I think RWD is better than AWD when it comes to sports cars.
It's alright, Audi knows what they're doing. Now there's the option at least!
They don't have to ditch it, just made a RWD variant as the base model just like they are doing with the Hurcan now. I'd rather have RWD over AWD anyday, I'm not driving cars like these in the snow or heavy rain anyway.
I'm a bad driver, I would go for AWD to be on the safe side lmao
Next generation will probably get the same solution as the BMW M5 and AMG E63s
I heard a rumour that there won't be another R8. When this generation ends, that'll be it! Just a rumour though.........
So!, Mercedes and BMW are embracing AWD now............and Audi and going back in time with RWD.........not sure I get it?
Not the worst snow in a generation that was 10/11 previously 1981/2 but hey . . .
Still getting used to hearing Henry's voice at the start of these videos. Where did the little bald man go?
The new tt-rs should be in RWD.
v10 and rwd all it needs now is a 6 speed
waitwuttt waste of money in terms of research and development and clearly won't sell enough like the last gen manual. Sometimes you need to stop looking at a car from a enthusiast/consumer mindset and more from a business mindset

On a personal note l would rather this car in Australia.
Snow is not much of a issue and it's more fun getting the car sideways.
😈😈😈😈😈
nice...
Audi is doing EVERYTHING RIGHT lately. They're the best German brand right now. By far.
BMW m8.
RIght now, Audi > BMW in my opinion. Does BMW have a car as crazy as an RS6, RS7, TTRS, R8 or RS3?
P O R S C H E
errorcode99 the best german brand its Porsche. Then the rest.
best german brand? i mean sure they are doing everything right but look at BMW and Porsche even MB. all doing every thing right maybe even better audi have real tough competition. did you forget that bmw has the m2 m3 m4 m5 m6 and m8? which shits on all of the audi rs line? lol
Every single company is aiming to have 4wd sports cars and Audi pull out I don’t think that’s very smart
*AWD Also this is just a special edition
You cant go wrong with RWD, every.
no quattro? good ☺️
Get some bass into the music and dialogue, and t'would make the viewing experience more pleasant
Lolll a production model in 2020 well done Audi the R8 RWS is a corker.
Give it to Chris Harris already
Epic review, epic editing and epic car.."Yeshua / Jesus is the way "
If you are gonna test a rear wheel drive version and there is a snow storm, wait for a few days for the snow to melt and then test the car. Otherwise, this is a waste of time
I agree that would seem like a logical thing to do, but I'm afraid it's not always as easy as that! If we could have, we would have. As I said in the film, we'll get it back in a few months and take it on a road trip.
I'm not a fan of the new R8 (its ugly) but damn if this isn't the best one they've made.
Where's the funny bald guy?
