One other thing I wonder is - laminated glass, as per windshield - how much bullet deformation and how much deviation from original flight path, etc. Also, what happens to accuracy when something like a 40cal cop bullet is fired thru windshield from within. I was in a car accident years ago and we were sliding sideways at about 80mph when we hit the kerb which caused all the windows on that side of the car to shatter, and I saw that cracking happen in real time spreading across the windows, and when they were completely cracked they just disintegrated and the glass came flying through the car and hit me. It's crazy how fast you can see things when you're in that life or death situation. Watching this video is the first time since the accident that I have ever seen it happen. Brought back memories.

Great video! I'm a 25 year glazier and have seen a lot of bullet holes in plate, and a ton of shot out windows with tempered. I've cut glass most of my carrier, broken a lot of tempered glass, and know it well.
Tempered glass does break faster than the speed of sound. That's why there is a loud pop when it explodes.
Pressure is what makes plate glass break more. Smaller, faster projectiles create less fractures because there is less force exerted on the glass.
The buckshot is the most exciting on plate because of the more projectiles creating force with every hit.
I love glass and I love guns.

    Amazing
Very interesting questions :) & truly a fun science experiment
    * The speed of sound in glass is 4540 m/s (~13 times the speed of sound in air 343m/s at 20C) vs the 1650 m/s speed of crack propagation in tempered glass (that you have mentioned)
@ 12:40 the cracks propagated in glass faster than the bullet that was passing in the air above it (it passed it despite the fact that that bullet was shot before the bullet that hit the glass!)
*super sonic bullets profile was a nice bonus
    * throw in a shot gun for some "gratuitous violence" 😂

    • @baselsteel4976
      @baselsteel4976 Рік тому

I guess you mentioned the "glass speed" (i.e. the linear propagation of cracks in the direction parallel to the bullet)=1400m/s vs 823 m/s for the bullet (super sonic in air) but I was too mesmerized by the footage that I didn't see it! (definitely want to keep such notes a bit longer on the screen in upcoming videos)

It would be interesting to see a massive 50ft diameter piece of glass being shot in the center, with a single projectile, just to watch the leading edge of the crack propagation travel further since it travels so fast. And then do it again with randomly placed stickers to see how it might change that propagation if at all. It would also be interesting to completely cover the back of a piece of glass in clear packing tape and the shot it from the front, to try and hold more of the glass together and see if that changes the speed of the propagation.

In the dual bullet edge shot at 12:54 you missed something that you hypothesized earlier, which is that the crack propagates "faster than a speeding bullet". Note that the free moving bullet above the glass was leading the bullet that hit the end of the glass, but then the wave from the edge shot beat the free moving bullet to the end of the glass, thus traveling faster than the free moving bullet. This means that the shock wave traveled faster than whatever FPS that .223 round was moving at.

Glass is cooled with Tension inside no matter how it cools. That's part of how it stays clear to us. So what can happen is when you start a break, it doesn't have to break like other solids, it can literally expend all that excess in an explosion that exceeds the amount of force you imparted.

Very interesting video. I love the fact you guys replayed the video and made observations at multiple speeds of footage. Thanks!

Great video. I broke a 8 foot sheet of 1/2 inch tempered glass with a center punch it was awesome. The stored energy continued to crack and pop 5 minutes after breaking !

Good shooting with the camera and guns. The one shot was so good the bullet seemed like it was split in half almost perfectly.
    The visuals were vey cool.

Loved seeing they shockwave in front of the speeding AR bullet. It can be seen in the reflection before it hits the glass

9:47 aye that’s how fast the OG CW Flash was in season 1, seeing it IRL is something else that’s crazy considering it’s his slowest speeds

I love the high-speed photography where you get to observe things that normally happen so quickly that you are never even aware of them, like the shockwave, or bullets igniting glass, etc.

I know this isn't a ballistics thing, however to see fractal burning into wood would look pretty amazing as it acts like lightning and you can make it burn faster and do other things by tuning how much voltage is put in. Its man made lighting that that burns itself into the wood like a photo of the lighting and the harder the wood the finer the electrical spread and burn. If you dont know the machine I speak of to do such a thing is built from a microwave transformer , google fractal burning to understand my vision. I've tried filming it in slowmo on my iPhone years ago. I dont need to tell you the results of that attempt. I love the passion you both have to share such amazing footage ❤❤

I think one of the most amazing things can be seen at for example 16:35 time stamp it's not only the shadow of the bullet we are seeing but the shadow of the actual shock wave that the bullet creates. It can be seen with human eye because it's so fast but the speed of light is of course much faster. Great video. I've subscribed.👍

At around 6:17, the last panel has glass move upward in the air, keeping its plane with the sheet it comes from. Man there were so many dynamics going on in these shots. Amazing stuff.

8:11 That's exactly how the almost-melted ice on the nearby lake acted this spring, it was these small pieces that had this interesting pattern on their surface which you could just crush between your fingers into a bunch of clear polygons.
