About that cracks coming from the edge towards the middle in that one 50 cal shot: In solid state physics there are different kinds of pressure waves traveling in a medium. I'm not a solid state physicist, but as far as I know there are s-waves and p-waves. P-Waves are pressure or compression waves (or longitudinal waves), where atoms in the glass are moving towards each other. Sound in air is an example of P-Waves. In S-Waves or shear waves (or transverse waves), atoms in the lattice move side to side much like a rope wave. The key insight to start to understand the cracking phenomena is that s- and p- waves have different group speeds in a material. So when the bullet is hitting the glass from the front, it starts a transverse wave, and once the bullet penetrates (which is also slightly later) it forces glass outwards, starting a longitudinal wave. Secondly, material stresses concentrate on the edges of any sufficiently hard/brittle material. So when the first wave hits the edge, it does so with so much power, that the stresses exceed the yield strength and the glass shatters from the outside in. At least this is my theory/understanding, feel free to correct me. This is why I love High-Speed Imagery, it reveals complex physics in (somewhat) everyday scenarios. Another fascinating addition to S- and P- Waves: In earth quakes, both types of waves are created, but S-Waves do the main damage. Shearing rock is much easier than compressing the rock. Therefor, P-Waves travel faster, but at lower amplitudes (or magnitudes). Animals, such as dogs, are much more sensitive to P-Waves than humans, which you see on countless videos on here, where dogs get nervous before an earth quake hits.
Yup. Felt the P-wave just before an earthquake once. It felt... strange. Imagine that you're sitting there, and suddenly your sense of balance is insiting that everything is suddenly tilted at 45 degree angle for a few seconds. Not like you're dizzy, just.. your inner ear is convinced that gravity is now at a 45 degree angle.
Funny story : I spent 32 years living in South Africa and in the last house I owned there I installed bullet proof glass in most of the windows of the house, one night during an attempted home invasion one of the gang of common spotted velcro crested wallet snatchers that were attempting to get in the house lost his patience and took 2 shots at the living room window, he was so close that the glass from the round impacting came back at him and blinded him...he was an employee of the garden service I used to maintain the garden, the idiot still had the nerve to come to work the next week with a bandage over one eye...I often wonder if he survived the 10 year prison sentence he received, the weak don`t live long in the SA prison system...
I absolutely love the sound effects in the slow-mo editing. Everything is spot on. Love this channel! Your idea of the mirroring effect to see the bulging of the glass would be a great test next!
I sincerely appreciate the amount of time, love and money you guys put into making content like this. The footage is mesmerizing. I definitely look forward to what you guys come up with next. Thank you for the education and entertainment!
16:26 it actually because sound wave travel way faster inside glass and is crack is not travel catch up on that speed, the wave energy been superposition on the edge that caused it energy density be concentrated by which cause that part to break.
Definitely one of the best channels out there right now. The absolutely incredible B-roll, and editing - hands down phenomenal. Keep it up guys. I’d love to see a compilation of just super slow motion rounds exiting the muzzle!
I remember when they did not have the cameras to be able to see a bullet in flight. Then I remember the first and it was still hard to see. Now look. Amazing.
@@BallisticHighSpeed absolutely, I just made another video today M134 vs Kamikazes RC planes , it will be out Wednesday! We need to talk to set up doing a few videos. You can get my number from Jeremy Vance or I will get yours . You guys have a awesome channel I like your content, we can make a few good videos o have almost every machine gun you can think of lol
you guys are SO SO SO UNDERRATED! the way yall present your cinematics is out of this world, i eat and watch yalls videos for fun. what i would recommend as a video idea is explosive vs balistic dummy in a car, dont know much about yall’s profit and financial status, but it would be plenty of fun, havent seen a video like that on yt!! or if not, test wether wood is a good armor against bullets, or how many stacks of wood would an individua need. good luck!!
I love the fact this amazing channel is the slightly bonkers offspring of demolition ranch and the slow mo guys. Absolutely love the content and can’t wait for more
It will be super interesting to see softer steel shot with rounds its not rated for. The deformation of the bullets and the steel would be insane under highspeed. Just please take cautionary steps because ricochets will be everywhere. But i think it will make an interesting video!
10:42 It's not a "vapour trail" , it's the image ,on the paper, of refracted light passing through the wake turbulence of the projectile. Same effect as heat shimmer off a hot road or what cause stars to twinkle. Air of different densities refract (bend) light by different amounts.
15:58 The speed of sound in heavy borosilicate glass is 3980 m/s (the speed of sound in air = 343 m/s) That's how it is possible. The shock wave of the impact met the edge of the pane and initiated fracturing at the edge. The fracturing occurs slower than the speed of sound in the material.
5:36 - wow it is hard to believe it has been 2 years already since I watched your first video when it was released. I have to say that I subscribed when I watched your video when it was just a day or two old and now your are pushing 400k subs - I have to say, you have earned that Sub with every single video you have posted!
Wow guys you continue to one up yourselves, amazing stuff. Hell of a good job editing. It absolutely amazes me on how much is actually missed by the naked eye..
I liked the shot at 9:53, which shows the movement of the scope on the .308 moving. I haven’t seen that before. Can you do more videos of this type of thing? Thank you
If it's not already in the hopper, I'd LOVE to see the back side of this glass under similar testing! I agree with what you said in the video, seeing the bulge happen would be insane. Doesn't even have to use the mirror trick, I'd actually prefer to see it at a 45 degree angle so we can see the depth forming. Great video as always guys, this one was super cool.
10:33 I think you're absolutely correct about the Schlieren effect. My theory is that the light hits the bullets then goes through the first layer of glass which have a different refractive index than air, reflects in the second layer and return back out again to the camera. I believe the Schlieren effects happens the first pass through the glass, and that ideally there would have been better without the second pass through the glass (after the reflection). You can see the super sonic cone from the tip of the bullet as well. I believe 'vapour trail' is regular turbulence as the shock wave keep the air behind the cone subsonic. PS: This is my unqualified opinion.
I've been looking for a channel with a proper high speed camera.. I've been telling demolition ranch and kentucky ballistics they need one but they never listened.. that's probably why i don't really watch their videos anymore..i love macro shots and super slow mo... it gets me going bro!!!!
Prints of the bullet impact can be considered art. I would love to buy some of your pictures. The work you guys do is amazing. Thank you for sharing it
I'm finding you guys are the best and most entertaining gun/explosive/high speed channel on UA-cam. You definitely deserve more subs. Please keep up the amazing content.
I’m really glad you guys are going places(tm) - it’s always a pleasure to see talent recognised :-) I’d like to second the vote for stuff like Scott’s absurdly large bore weapons being fired against armoured glass that is clearly not rated for big game rifles - the physics of bullets at that scale and the effects of mass vs. velocity are fascinating, and I really think you guys have a great medium to show that! :-)
Did you see that .308 barrel wobble when it was showed in slow motion. I didn’t realize it would do that. For me it shows, what I heard about free floating barrels, that they are not to be touched because it will throw off the harmonics.
Fantastic video guys ❤I had hoped you would have shot it a forth time with the.50bmg, but I guess I’ll have to wait for the next one. Best of luck 🍀to you and your families.
Y'alls got some of the best slow mo on all of youtube...when you were shooting the ar you could see the bullet leave the muzzle long before the bolt even thought about moving
I love how with the first two rifles you get a frame of the bullet at 3k fps. I don't know why, but seeing that one spot where it appears and disappears is really cool.
Another great video. Would love to see Alpine send you one more of the 12 series so you can do the mirror view to see what it would look like on the other side of the glass when it gets shot. thank you for your awesome content and keep up the great work.
Once we wrap up this series on glass, what would you guys like to see us shoot/test next?
Various metals/ sheetrock/ engine block/ tree
Dude don't touch powdered glass... It can enter your circulatory system via your skin.... most deffo not worth ever touching with bare dons......
hard wood like train track wood vs various calibers
Play-Doh.
Mild steel, different thickness

That's how I imagine gravitational waves feel like@@The_Keeper
I'd definitely love to see something like Kentucky Ballistics' large firearms (for example the .577 T-Rex) go up against the A12 glass
That the 4 bore and other large rounds would be a treat
I want to see those fired in slow motion and the impact of the recoil on the shoulder and rest of body
The punt gun, that would be awesome. He just did some videos on it.
The .416 Rigby and the 4 bore would be sweet to see.
This would be superb!

I have shutters made of 10mm AR500 and glass/polycarbonate windows.
The visuals are second to none. Great work, as always, guys.
I approve of this kind of advertising. You get money, we get content, they get screen time. Couldn't be a more pleasant arrangement.
21 Minutes of brilliant shooting and video editing quality
Thanks so much! Glad you enjoyed.
I absolutely love the sound effects in the slow-mo editing. Everything is spot on. Love this channel!
Your idea of the mirroring effect to see the bulging of the glass would be a great test next!
Hell ya, the sound guy deserves a raise.
Man... the gatling gun sequence with the particles of glass essentially floating in air as bullets rip through at full speed is absolutely beautiful
I sincerely appreciate the amount of time, love and money you guys put into making content like this. The footage is mesmerizing. I definitely look forward to what you guys come up with next. Thank you for the education and entertainment!
The dinging sound at 9:55 when the casing hits the rifle is such a cool detail. Feels like it should be in a big gunfight scene in a movie.
seeing the lead in the jacketed round slide down was amazing. I've seen a lot of slowmo, but that is one of my faves.
Such mind-blowing visuals as usual, always a true pleasure to watch what you guys come up with. Thanks a lot for all your content)
Awesome video guys! Happy to have provided the glass. Excited to see what’s next.
Dude yall are crushing it lately! Congrats! Hope those crazy expensive camera purchases or rentals are being paid off in abundance! Totally worth it!
This may be my favorite video from y'all. Holy crap the slow mo was so sharp on this one, amazing. The .50 was stunning.
Not only do I enjoy destruction at a quarter million FPS, I also appreciate the excellent muzzle control and range protocol employed here.
16:26 it actually because sound wave travel way faster inside glass and is crack is not travel catch up on that speed, the wave energy been superposition on the edge that caused it energy density be concentrated by which cause that part to break.
Now, this is what I've been asking and waiting for !! Hell yes, this channel is the best
Man you guys kill it with the slow mo shots.....unreal video thanks for the entertainment!!!
9:54 wow, imagine that stress on the scope mount and the scope.
Amazing
I like the fact that you keep telling us what the glass can and cannot cope with, brilliant advert for the glass manufacturer 👍
Definitely one of the best channels out there right now. The absolutely incredible B-roll, and editing - hands down phenomenal. Keep it up guys. I’d love to see a compilation of just super slow motion rounds exiting the muzzle!
And once again a cinematic masterpiece, beautifully filmed, edited and accompanied by sound effects. Kudos guys, it was a pleasure to watch!
Definitely a series with you guys collaborating with Scott at Kentucky Ballistics using his big bore weapons on ballistic dummies.
I remember when they did not have the cameras to be able to see a bullet in flight. Then I remember the first and it was still hard to see. Now look. Amazing.
They've improved so much in what feels like such a short amount of time.
This is awesome I have always wanted to shoot glass like this with all different calibers ! You guys have an awesome channel

I absolutely enjoyed this video,it was soo satisfying and professional 🤙🏻💯🔥

VERY professional and well analyzed without any F-bombs.
I get the same happy feeling watching these videos as I did when I was 7-years-old on Christmas morning. Thank you for all of your videos, guys.
Truly amazing guys. Thanks for enlightening us on the science of impact velocity.
15:58 The speed of sound in heavy borosilicate glass is 3980 m/s (the speed of sound in air = 343 m/s)

You are really giving the slow mo guys a run for their money. Keep up the good work .
And they cover these potato cannons!!!
What an awesome channel! Glad I stumbled on this, really well shot and edited!
Love to see all the details also about the guns, how the projectile exits and the data about muzzle energy and speed. Very good job!
If u look at 13:11 ballistic high speed when shooting the .50 u can see a small wave traveling with the bullet
Y’all always deliver a banger of a video. Been following you guys forever keep it up!
just discovered this channel ... badasss ... I love your videography and the subject matter.
you guys deserve 1m followers. I hope you know that. We appreciate you guys, and all the time and money it takes to make stuff like this happen.
Awesome video concept! Should be interesting to see how the different layer types in the glass react in high speed

I liked the shot at 9:53, which shows the movement of the scope on the .308 moving. I haven’t seen that before. Can you do more videos of this type of thing? Thank you
Thanks for the outstanding videos, and for not screaming and and trying to be dramatic. Very enjoyable and informative to watch.
Quality of camera awesome ❤
Another outstanding video! Thanks fellas!
16:05. Don't forget that sound (and information regarding force) travels much faster through solids and liquids than it does through air.
The crystal clear ding of the shell hitting the weapon is pristine!!!!!!!!!!!

Calling it just a peice of glass really undersells how much engineering goes into making something like bullet proof glass work.
The high speed camera shots show the true destruction!
