AO 2022. I’m Melbournian and will never forget it. In the third when there seemed to be no hope I prayed for him to just make it to the fourth. What took place afterwards is history. Thing is I’m a single Dad raising a disabled child, and it’s really challenging. Rafa inspired me that night, he made me cry, and reminded me to never give up no matter how helpless the fight seems. Every time I’m overwhelmed I think about what I saw happen that night. Rafa transcends tennis. He is the ultimate role model and inspiration for that hardest of endurance sports: life itself. Gracias Rafa.

My favorite Rafa match is from the 2004 Miami tournament when 17 year old Nadal played 22 year old, world #1, Roger Federer for the very first time... and beat Roger 6-3, 6-3. And that was on a hard court. That 17 year old kid beat the best player in the world... and won twice as many games as Roger. Federer played in 17 tournaments in 2004 - making 11 finals and winning all 11 of them. He lost just 6 matches the entire year. He was easily the best player in the world... and 17 year old Rafa owned him that day.
Another favorite Rafa match happened later in 2004 - when Nadal beat world #2 (Andy Roddick) in the Davis Cup finals 6-7 (6-8 in tie breaker), 6-2, 7-6 (8-6 in tie breaker), 6-2. In doing so, Rafa became the youngest player to win a singles match for the winning team in a Davis Cup final.

As a Novak fan, the AO 2012 is my favorite because that was the peak of sport for me. What they did for 6 hours... It will be hard for another sports event to match that level of brutal mental resilience and tenacity.
Respect and admiration towards Rafa and a huge thank you for all the nerves who took from me while tormenting Novak. :D
In his last match, for the first time ever, I was wholeheartedly supporting Rafa to win the second set just so that we could see one more set of him, and of him and Novak fighting against each other.
Best of wishes to the penultimate Big 4 member. Salute 🫡

This was a very nice tribute to Rafa.
Even with all of Nadal's numerous injuries... Rafa still has the best Grand Slam event winning percentage of the big three.
Rafa played in 68 GS tournaments - and won 22 (.324 event W%).
Novak has played in 76 GS tournaments - and won 24 (.316 event W%).
Roger played in 81 GS tournaments - and won 20 (.247 event W%).
Rafa also has a much better head to head record vs. Roger and Novak at the Grand Slams.
    Rafa was 11-7 vs. Novak (.611 W%)
    Rafa was 10-4 vs. Roger (.714 W%)
    Novak was 11-6 vs. Roger (.647 W%)
    Rafa 21-11 vs Novak & Roger (.656 W%)
    Novak 18-17 vs. Rafa & Roger (.514 W%)
    Roger 10-21 vs. Rafa & Novak (.323 W%).
Nadal is the best Grand Slam player of the three.
And somehow... amazingly, Nadal has this much better record despite the fact that 3 of the 4 GS are played on surfaces that favor Novak and Roger.
Rafa is also the greatest Davis Cup player of all time.
He is 29-1 in Davis Cup singles - and his only loss was his very first match on February 6th of 2004 at age 17. He has had 29 consecutive singles wins over the rest of his career. Rafa and Feliciano Lopez lost a Davis Cup doubles match (7-9 in the 5th set) on September 24th, 2005. Rafa has won EVERY Davis Cup match that he has played since that match. From September 25th, 2005 through today (October 28th, 2024)... Rafa is 25-0 in singles and 7-0 in doubles. He led Spain to FIVE Davis Cup wins.

I agree with you, I am of those who thinks that there is a big 3 for sure, but the GOAT debate in my opinion is not that easy and I prefer to do it as Mckenrroe: Novak the GOAT in hard, Rafa The Goat on clay and Federer on Grass

He 's the first one to say "if, if, if, doesn't exist"... but I don't care what they say. It's obvious that missing 14 GS and withdrawing from other 5 GS, and still manage to win 22 GS, just 2 below the male player with the highest amount, says a lot.

It's interesting how you say the GOAT debate (if there is one) centers more around Novak and Federer than Novak and Rafa. I think the slam count is secondary to the lopsided hth on hardcourts between Rafa and Novak. I was desperate to see Rafa get one more win against Novak on Hard-courts, but I knew it was a long-shot: do you think Novak worked Nadal out on this surface over time, or do you think Rafa simply slowed down too much after 2012/3?

But he hasn’t broken a racquet. That’s important because he played as a teen to 38 years.
It’s an important reminder to us to be measured in our approach in what we do.
No one says Rafa is a Saint. Why would he be a saint. He is human. He just dealt with challenges better than other players. This is someone who has a chronic disease, who deals with pain everyday. This makes his self control even more remarkable
Why wouldn’t he get angry on court, he is human. He won’t shout at his wife, box or ballkids like we see veterans and younger players do
He will argue with Umpire as he should, they make a mess. It’s his career, he can’t let them mess him up.
Temper tantrums, throwing toys out of his cot, 😊don’t think so.
Rafa doesn’t act like a child, players do call supervisors and threaten not to play. It’s not like swearing at the official where it would be heard. Belittle and berate.
I guess he has done so well, that you have to nitpick, point out he is no Saint. He probably did swear but we didn’t hear.
He stuck to the point, we’re talking 22+ years
      Singles, doubles, Davis Cup matches
      Exemplary not Saintly
He wasted time with his ticks, trying to calm himself and Centre himself
He wasn’t punished enough for it. he provided entertainment, sure but it didn’t mean they should have shown him so much respect for his personal ticks
The guy has insane principles which he lived by. He practiced what he preached .
His autobiography gives great insight to who he is and why he behaved the way he did.
Everything connects: principles, values and his behavior
      Cheers
