  • Compilation vid of my visits to Butterfly World over a several year period. Butterfly World is the largest butterfly house in the world, with more than three acres containing butterflies, botanical gardens, bird aviaries and a working butterfly farm and research center. There's also the Lorikeet Encounter, where you can pay $1 to personally feed the Lorikeets, as well as a small "Bug Museum." I've seen a couple of butterfly gardens before, but nothing like this, with the amount and variety of butterflies to be found. They're literally flying all around you from the moment you walk in, to the point where you need to be mindful when you walk, so as to not accidentally step on any flying down by your legs and feet, or even resting on the ground. If you're lucky one may even land on you. :)
People come in to Butterfly World from around the world, especially Europe, where we overheard somebody from Germany talking about how it's heavily advertised on German TV. So I just think it's pretty cool that for us it's only five miles down the 95, off of Sample Road. The place is usually pretty busy, with lots of people and especially kids, so you'll hear a lot of people throughout the vid and their random conversation, sometimes as they're standing only inches from me as I record. There's really not much one can do about that, as you have to grab your pics and vids while you can, since Butterflies (and the birds) don't wait around.
NOTE: The music you hear in the background throughout the vids is the music Butterfly World plays through their speakers. You'll also occasionally hear the pair of resident Macaws in the background giving random screeches.
My favorite part of Butterfly World has actually become the aviaries, with the variety of small tropical birds flying around, in particular finches of all types. The birds are just too cute, and have a lot of personality, so they're fun to watch. Since the birds are exposed to hundreds of people walking by them seven days a week many have gotten used to people, and there's a sign on one of the aviaries letting people know that some may even land on your head. I've actually had that happen once.
(As the years go on I wonder how many people will no longer get the Reading Rainbow opening credits reference and Levar Burton quote from 35:33 - 35:44 .....)
At 47:16 there's a pic of a large Malachite butterfly on a little kid's hand. Turns out his name is Billy, and he was 4, and for whatever reason when I was visiting that day he was drawn to me. In a sea of people milling about he came over to me and actually hugged my leg at one point as he began talking about the butterflies, wanting to show me the way he was able to magically get them on his hands and fingers. Billy would find a butterfly, get it on his hand or finger, and come over to show me. Then go and find another and come back for another demonstration. Hence, the great pic of him with the Malachite. His dad was worried that he was bothering me and was really surprised, almost perplexed, when he hugged onto my leg, saying he's never done that before with anybody. I didn't mind and found the entire thing intriguing. I enjoyed watching Billy work his magic with the butterflies and joked to his dad that he was the Butterfly Whisperer.
    47:04 starts the photo slideshow.
    Enjoy.....
