Tomato Profile: Japanese Black Trifele or Russian Black Truffle - TRG 2104

- The Japanese Black Trifele is an indeterminate potato leaf tomato that will get about 6 feet tall. It produces nicely shaped pear tomatoes that weigh 4-6 ounces. Its a good producer and is doing well in the heat. It has the dark mahogany, purple, deep brick red colors with green tossed in as is common with 'black' tomatoes. It is not from Japan it is Russian. Trifele is Latvian for truffle so maybe this tomato should be called the Russian Black Truffle. I liked the flavor it was similar the 'Black Krim."

Gary, this looks like a good healthy plant and producer. I like the way you prune the leaves, keeps it clean and giving the plant energy to focus on the fruit. And this fruit looks delicious. Thank you for sharing.
thank you for making this review! Can't wait for mine to grow!
Thanks for watching.

thanks for your help, since I live close to you I think I will be following what you plant, I will be buying some tomato seeds from you
I’m growing this variety this year
Gary, I grew this variety a couple of years ago and it was not only one of my heaviest producers but became one of my favorites along with Paul Robeson. I've been meaning to replant it but, I've been experimenting with so many other heirlooms that the JB Trifele (I'm not sure about pronunciation either) kinda got pushed back. Thanks for your outstanding vids & reminder to get this one back on the table.
you are about a month to a month and half a head of me and it is too cool to see what my plants will look like next month.ie.just starting to get the first dark streaks on my indigo apples and beans a week away from burying me :) and truffles just starting to fruit too.
Oh that is cool so you can see what is coming.
Just got a small pack of Black truffle seeds and some Yellow Banana Legs! I'll keep you posted! Also, yesterday I collected the first Black Krim and a yellow Azoychka!!!!!!!
What size tomato is the yellow azoychka?
thanks for the reply, so it would be ok to start them now
I'm so jealous of your tomato plants. Mine are barely doing anything with this Michigan weather. It got down to 57 degrees last night.
We hit 58 yesterday at night. The heat now cooler weather is causing leaf spot to go wild here.
Nice looking tomato. I like the shape and the color.
The taste got better removed a few days from the rain. The shape and color already made it a keeper for me. Now it tastes pretty good!
I have not gotten to the eating part but I can dido what you have said with the results in my garden. I grew 10 of these and every plant has 20 or more tomatoes on it. Even here in ND, the plants 5 to 5.5 feet tall and growing. My neighbor is growing 5 types of tomatoes which include 5 black trifeles which he received from me. It was become the star in his garden, as well. Thanks for posting and have a great day!
Thanks. I like information that matches up.
I read somewhere that there was over 7500 different sort of tomatoes
This is Russian as well? Damn, those guys really perfected the dark/black tomatoes. Black Krim, Paul Robeson, Black Prince, now this one..nice
Thanks.
I'm wondering what your top 5 favorite tomatoes are? I grew the Aussie from seed this year based on your recommendation. They were really large!
Gary I love the bk tom. var's. My first ones called kumatos were just from the grocery store. I saved seed and they bred true. The purples are good too. Im growing a bk cherry tomatoes and Bk prince as well this year. I find the kumatos have a "smokey" taste. My best plants this year have to be the Cherokee Purples .
I have some purples going. They are looking good.
Gosh, you showcase so many different kinds of tomatoes, I now want to try them all, but don't have the space. Will put this on my TBP list.
mbot565 Yep. I have a lot to showcase. I figured Id try a bunch this year and reduce down to plants that could manage my climate. So a few more are on the way now. LOL.
Thanks for sharing
Hi Gary, I grew this tomato this year and I agree, it is a good producer and it did actually taste good as well. I grew this in southern California, No cracking, and was relatively heat tolerant as well. I kept my seeds so I can regrow this variety in 2015 along with Nineveh Tomato (rareseeds.com)
another tomato I will be planting
nice color on those. looks like a good salsa tomato!
Salsa is what i am thinking nice color.
I think pruning tomatoes is a mistake, the only exception is commercial production where they remove the lowest 6-12 inches for better air circulation. Less foliage=less sugars produced=less vigorous plant=less tomatoes to harvest.
It is a balance. You can certainly over prune. I need the circulation for my humid disease ridden zone.
It’s funny..seems like there’s always difficulties growing things you want where you live. Here in Salt Lake, you can stand there watering day and night. We get fantastic sun and heat, but the night time temps limit our season. Try grafting for disease resistance..!
Thanks. That was good video-ing of a big plant. I actually SAW it. I have this on my list for this year; I hope it can manage a cooler summer here, than I know you'll have, there. Did you remove leaves to that height? And more?
Good luck. I remove leaves from the bottom for like a 1 foot gap to stop soil splash. Did you mean that way? Please visit The Rusted Garden Seed & Garden Shop: www.theustedgarden.com.
Yes, that's what I meant. There seemed to be many tomatoes just "bare naked" like .... Adam and Eve lost their leaves. But now I see, you trimmed the bottom branches, but, not the ones with flowers? or not with. little tomatoes? It looked like two feet up, at least, but I guess that's just the camera. Really, I thought that any lower level tomato making would be trimmed away with the branches. Thanks. Oh, and since then (I was away for a few days.) I've seen more photos of the Trifele, and they look, very similarly shaped and beautiful!
this surely is a blight on those leaves gary? Have same spots on my tomatoes, also on underside on the leaves early in the morning you can clearly see white fungus spores. baking soda time.
Yep leaf spot is hear and some early blight signs. I always get it but I learned to really slow it down.
Gary, i saw you prune most all your bottom leaves out even with the ones near the fruit, im wondering when do you prune them all out, before or after the fruit starts setting
thank you
Huan Yu Check out some of my pruning videos but I start early and slowly take leaves. This creates a nice gap to stop soil splash. I start when there are just flowers.
thanks for the videos, I plan on growing some beets for fall should I start them inside or direct sow and when do you think I should start them
Ed Fischer Id say definitely not indoors. Either direct sow or try starting them in a seed tray flat outdoors. They just need to be in a place they wont dry out. Hole should be in flat too so rain wont drown them.
How to Plant Beets and Spinach in Cell Flats for Transplants: The Rusted Garden 2012
Love it!!
Anne Arundel County, not that far from you, I'm also doing cabbage what time do you suggest for starting the seeds
Cabbage for fall. I might actually start now. I just picked the last of my red cabbage today. It did fine in the heat. The root stock for other cabbages I left in the ground sprouted leaves. I used to wait to august 1st but I think starting seed now would work out fine.
Why removing so many leaves?
Actually dont recall back then.
