"If you stare long enough into the abyss, the abyss stares back." - Friedrich Nietzsche "As hard as it is to get into the void, it is even harder to return." - Karl Jobst
It is not completely impossible to return into the map from void, however the restrictions are even harsher and practically you need an item placed in the void to help you boost the momentum. This means either the mapper did it on purpose, or you managed to force a pain elemental to spawn a lost soul out of bounds and then led the lost soul to the exact spot needed to void glide back. In which case absolute congrats, you haven't just beaten the game, you humiliated it.
You humiliated the game, but not yourself. You grew. You improved. You took a different path, and gained much. You may have broken rules, but you forged your own to replace them. You experienced an incredible victory. Everything was risked, and everything was gained. I hope you know the difference.

Something to note: void gliding off of a monster _doesn't_ actually emulate void gliding over an eastward corner, like you visualized in the video, because actor hitboxes in Doom are always axis-aligned ( thus, being caught between a monster and a diagonal wall doesn't put you into a 90 degree corner, but a 45 degree one ). Instead, the reason why you can substitute a wall for a monster is because collisions between actors _don't affect their momentum._ You can see this pretty much instantly in Doom 2 by booting up a vanilla-accurate source port and running straight into one of the zombiemen on MAP01's staircase - you'll run into it, cease moving even an inch, and yet still have the movement bob effect with your viewpoint and pistol, plus you'll go zooming off at full speed once the zombieman steps out of your way. Iirc, because thingrunning is a thing, there's a few more details that go into making the feedback loop that allows for building up void glide speed, but overall the process of void gliding off of a corner and void gliding off of an actor are two entirely different processes that have similar results.
One cool aspect of Doom engine is that the floors are rendered with a flood-fill style algorithm that looks up the required texel based on screen-space, so the floors will always extend to the bottom of the screen when you're in the void even if the sector should logically end way further ahead.
Only sort of true. IDSPISPOPD was exclusive to Doom and The Ultimate Doom, whereas IDCLIP was available in every id Tech 1 game, including Doom and The Ultimate Doom.

If you knew where to aim for the exit, you could speed clip any level in under a second. Main problem was not running straight through the exit and off the map. Maybe you could ask around for original pre-patch copy. CPU speed was 166Mhz and is what 4Ghz + today, not to mention bus speed or SIMMs compared to DDR4. Hell, the entire Doom 1 could get lost in my CPUs L3 cache lol. Just an idea bud.
Now, this was never mentioned but I kind of just wanna say what I think is why the void has a weird graphical effect. Basically, the game doesn't think anyone would come out here, so it doesn't bother drawing frames. This also means it doesn't bother clearing frames. With this in mind, when you enter the void the game is forced to draw the frames of your hand, gun, etc etc. This force doesn't apply to clearing, so it doesn't clear frames and just gives it that messy look. This is what I think, as I sadly don't have the game. If I did, I would look into the code and try to figure out a better way. Don't insult me cause its wrong.. please I'm fragile.
That void graphics thing is actually relatively common in older games. It's caused by not clearing the screen before rendering - something done automatically in most modern graphics.
Absolutely incredible content my friend & i Dread the fact that these insanely weird doom facts will continue for much longer, your videos themselves became nostalgic videos seemingly overnight. Again absolutely great job with these historic oddities. They are so specific. Yes i grew up playing doom so im Honored to be amongst Legends. I knew doom was huge but... holy Sh*t
So I'm watching this holding my baby, and he loves the screen effect when you clip in doom. He also said he loves the video, but the screen is the coolest part.
Totally off topic but if your kid is talking i dont think that counts as a baby anymore. No way a baby could articulate the fact that he likes a specific effect on the screen unless youre reading way too far into a smile or a clap or some other simple expression of joy
I remember my brother and I once ran into a glitched Imp while doing this. We found invisible barriers well outside the map and eventually found a corner. Then we got busy doing something else and it just sat there. When we got back to it, an imp was up close scratching us. And it would not die. It had us trapped, scratching constantly.
LMAO, he takes around a second to set it up, and he's done plenty attempts... mhm, yeah, TOTALLY suspicious when someone practices a run to pull it off successfully. Your "opinion" is... utterly unqualified, to say the least.
@@unhelmet5218 Sounds like some high calibre nonsense to me. There's nothing suspicious about depravity's run, and there's not a single incident in the history of doom speedrunning where "weapon movement" was indicative of something fishy, or "false". I need to find out the level name and therefore I can go look where I remember as a kid. I know exactly where I ran outside the map to get there

5:55 "Linguiça" lol. That's a great username.
thank's
You make these speed runs feels so epic. Thanks for making such great content
Omg he didn’t say “hello you absolute legends”
Absolutely incredible content my friend & i Dread the fact that these insanely weird doom facts will continue for much longer, your videos themselves became nostalgic videos seemingly overnight. Again absolutely great job with these historic oddities. They are so specific. Yes i grew up playing doom so im Honored to be amongst Legends. I knew doom was huge but... holy Sh*t
What is your profession?
-Doom researcher .
Respect
Karl and doom go together great. Loving the content 👍 ✌
15:15 The par for this level is 30 seconds, apparently. How could you ever get close to that *without* void gliding?
Jesus mode engaged
Thanks Karl, absolutely love your videos. The highlight of my Saturday!
So I'm watching this holding my baby, and he loves the screen effect when you clip in doom. He also said he loves the video, but the screen is the coolest part.
Welcome to the void, BabyDoomguy!
Your baby can talk and articulate such things?
Totally off topic but if your kid is talking i dont think that counts as a baby anymore. No way a baby could articulate the fact that he likes a specific effect on the screen unless youre reading way too far into a smile or a clap or some other simple expression of joy
@@TheLastApostle I can't tell if you're joking
@@supervillainx6761 im being about half sarcastic
I remember my brother and I once ran into a glitched Imp while doing this. We found invisible barriers well outside the map and eventually found a corner. Then we got busy doing something else and it just sat there. When we got back to it, an imp was up close scratching us. And it would not die. It had us trapped, scratching constantly.
You know you've played too much Mass Effect when you start hearing the Illusive Man theme at 17:15 xD
Do you know that the actual song he uses is? I've heard it in a ton of stuff but I can't find the name anywhere
Again you accomplish to make a thrilling Video for Speedrunners and interested Noobs (like myself) alike. Thanx for that!
18:05 - Depravity’s Run - That aim with the rocket launcher looks... suspicious, to say the least.
LMAO, he takes around a second to set it up, and he's done plenty attempts... mhm, yeah, TOTALLY suspicious when someone practices a run to pull it off successfully. Your "opinion" is... utterly unqualified, to say the least.
@@nineinchheels2041 I think he means that the movement of the weapon was too fast and there's cases were that was 'cause it was a false run.
@@unhelmet5218 Sounds like some high calibre nonsense to me. There's nothing suspicious about depravity's run, and there's not a single incident in the history of doom speedrunning where "weapon movement" was indicative of something fishy, or "false".
If anything, this is one of those cases where I'm glad that people with their unqualified opinions aren't something I need to deal with on discord. Nothing annoys me more than false allegations of "cheating" based purely on how somebody doesn't know what the hell they're talking about.
@@nineinchheels2041 I was just saying, it's good to have skepticism. I'm not saying "He's a rat that must be punished!" I was commenting about what it seems something that I also found weird. I don't know almost anything about speedrun. I'm not gonna put a lawsuit against anyone. Just having fun chattin' bout something. Have a good day! So calm down and have fun
Speedrunners: This specific geometry is really important and has special properties....
Everyone else: You mean that right angled corner?
Best quote: "It didn't seem to have an advantage but it does look pretty cool!"
Story of my competitive career
mathprodigy looking cool is way more important than winning
Oh definitely lmao
I can't even do the window button press in SIGIL E5M3 (tried for a while), let alone all this void stuff. Impressive, and great video Karl!
Doom was the OG backrooms
I never knew there could be a whole YT channel and/or community on DOOM speed running haha. I found this surprisingly interesting!
1:18 That moment the textures outside the doom maps are minecraft bedrock. Doom was really ahead of its time
An amazing story with a twist in the end. Thank you for that :)
Dude I have a memory as a kid..... I walked through the walls of a certain level and can't remember which it was.... Once I got so far out I ran into a pitch black room and it had those strobing flashing lights with a goddamn cyber demon in it.... I need to find out the level name and therefore I can go look where I remember as a kid. I know exactly where I ran outside the map to get there
On the wiki, you have all the levels where a cyber demon appears:
doomwiki.org/wiki/Cyberdemon
Down, at "Appearance statistics".
My favorite thing about videos that cover these games is that instead of having to show clips of runs, the entire run can be shown without "padding" out runtime. It's cool to be able to see the entirety of a world record, multiple times throughout one reasonably long video.
SEIZURE WARNING: Note that some visual content of this video may cause seizures in some people.
I had to come back and watch this one again (for the fourth time) after today's vid about all ghosts.
