the greatest thing is the fact that all these speedruns have been dramatticaly increased in the last 10 years. Great timing on this video for me. I just started grinding about a month ago to prepare for doing full game UV Max runs, and I've been watching so many Doom videos. This was a great insight into the history with a lot of things I didn't know about. Great stuff!
You are THE FIRST person to give me ( Dashiva ) partial credit for map07 pacifist. So I thank you! It started as an argument between speedrunners. It isn't possible. It'll never be done. It can't be done. I provided evidence that with a properly timed and setup SR50 run, it was 100% possible due to the way the engine was coded, and then stx-Vile took that, and literally the next day made it a reality (albeit with a rocket jump twist, which is all his), because he's a beast. I remember fighting the passionate fight that IT WAS TECHNICALLY POSSIBLE with more "realists" and going to bed satisfied that I had made my point in a fight I had NO stakes in. Waking up only to see what he had just done. It was an amazing day for me. Not because my proof motivated someone to make it real, but because it actually happened. map07-pacifist was thought impossible for decades. To be fair, I could never have done it on my own. I was a speed runner, yes, but not in his category. So he gave me a unique opportunity to unleash a "I told you so!" on the speed running community that I would not have been able to obtain on my own. Karl, thanks for being so thorough in your research as to acknowledge my contribution here. It isn't to my knowledge well documented, and Vile never mentioned me in his text file with his run, so that was impressive to me to see all these years later. Big Fan.
I've never seen such a diverse community in a video game. People from, Germany, Sweden, The Czech republic, Finland, norway, USA, hugary and more. Gotta love how the world unites over these things.
Actually insane how far the WR went down by, from over an hour to 17:29, that might be one of the most drastic changes I've ever seen for a game in speedrunning.
The quality, research you do, the way you present all the info and so much more, is truly a notch above any others in regard to the speed running community. I personally think you are one of the best on UA-cam period.
Karl upload s and it makes my day, I really enjoy the content, I love the history behind these awesome timeless games and the wonderful people that dedicated their time to it. Karl is a really good person player and content creator, he is humble and has no ego issues, he doesn't like to brag because he knows there are plenty of other people in the world who are pretty amazing too, he doesn't brag or act like he is the best he respects his fellow gamers and genuinely enjoys their achievements and is happy for them. Lol he did a video list of speedruns, and included himself on the list but never once said that it was him or mention much of the skill it required he kept it simple and if you didn't notice the name you never would have knew it was him and he also didn't fluff it up and make it sound like he was some sort of doom god lmao, great guy I love him, he actually IS an absolute legend!!
My favorite thing about these types of videos is that they are like a documentary. Like, this is the same caliber as if there was a documentary on the history of Baseball pitcher's speed of throws and styles and how they changed over the century of the sport. The same type of niche appeal, same quality as any big brand documentary maker.
Big documentary companies really missed out on this whole niche market, but with really popular games like Doom or Super Mario they could still get a huge audience. It's just that all the executives in charge of making the decisions are probably old and clueless.
It's always a little surreal to think that these games were being speedran when I was only a few months old, and 24 years later people are still improving the time.
Your videos about speedrunning history of are one of the best, if not the best, among it's kind. Thank you so much for delivering such high quality content. Please keep up the amazing work you've been developing. You are an absolute legend!
Sub 17½ is such a huge accomplishment, implementing everything nearly perfectly for the entire run. There are so many tricks these days and you have to get them all (and the game itself) right without even a single moderate screw up to reach that time. The record on Looper's channel is truly a marvel to behold and one should go and appreciate the sheer level of skill and consistent execution on it. Can't recommend enough.

It is funny to hear Czech names read by foreigners :D However you almost landed it perfectly actually, but still was funny to hear it :D Back to a point, another great video from you, I love your content and I always enjoy it. It must take such a long time to prepare the informations and data to make the video, I really do admire your work.
You're an absolute legend, Karl Jobst! And I'll tell you why exactly. Initially, speedrunning was not something I was interested in, far from it. But your storytelling talent and skills quickly won me over. You are the sort of guy that can make anything interesting. I wish my teachers at school were like you.
Can't be said enough how great you are at presenting speedrunning in a way that even people unfamiliar with the game can appreciate. ESPN has a hard time doing that with sports. History, background, and the impact of innovation are are done so well. You are crushing it.
I think his videos are too long, and also too much pure data just "read from a paper" like every single time almost. This is a good middle ground with a little bit more backstory and perfect length being sub 30 min. But karl has always been absolutely (a legend) great doing videos like this with a perfect mix.
@@ottojagenstedt9740 "just read from a paper" I hate to break this too you, but a good majority of UA-camrs write out a script for their UA-cam videos and what they are gonna say... which is basically reading from a paper...and yes Karl is one of those youtubers.... yeah I don't think you know what you're talking about lol.
I was feeling so downbeat today until I saw this video and now I feel like an absolute legend. The effort put to DOOM 2 and the whole franchise overall is incredible, one of the best communities out there and I'm glad Karl brings this documentary of how a game that came out so long ago, still has players and lot of relevance in the speedrunning community
I was already excited when I saw you were planing to release a new video about Doom today, but i couldnt guess itll be this topic. Thank you for making this video! I'm a Doom veteran that started way back in 1994. I have never attempted any type of Doom speed running before even though I would love to try it. The problem is...I have medical issues that effect my memory and while I'm a damn good player there's no way I could remember all of those precise movements. I have however placed times in terrorist hunts on expert with my team in Rainbow Six Vegas 2 on the Xbox 360. The last time I checked we were still tied for first place but...we did it with only two players the other top 10 teams were full at 4 people. When we tied first place we were practicing and it...just happened. That's why we were not running a full team. Addendum- I sure wish Ubisoft would do a remaster of the two Rainbow Six Vegas games as I would try for it again. ;)
I really appreciate how much work you do to make videos like THIS ONE. Thank you for giving us that piece of nostalgy and information, can't wait for next ones
It's pretty cool watching how speedrun and skill barriers were broken over time, especially in a game with such a long-standing community as Doom. You mentioned PWADs in the video and I think there's some great content to see there as well, as the mapping community is as active as ever, and some of the mapping projects truly push the boundaries of what Doom and its most skilled players can do. Just check out Sunlust as an example, including that guy who managed to beat it single segment, no saves. Or something like Sunder if you'd like to down an even crazier route.
Loving listening to your videos while cooking. Ive listenied to a few of them multiple times. The perfect thing for a gamer to listen to while cooking. Love the fact you mention the names of old skool legend whos contributions would be long forgotten to the masses. Its a great way to pay homage and at the same time level up peoples knowledge.
*"Doom isn't technically 3D"* Yes it is, it has a Z-Axis and everything, it just skips checking for it in a number of circumstances, but it still frequently comes up regularly in gameplay.
@@XenoSpyro There is something weird in duke nukem where your environment changes depending on how you move but isn't necessarily consistent. Or a pillar where you do not return to the same place after circling around it for 360 degrees. I always thought those things were related to the term 2.5D but not sure the term even means anything. ZeroMaster will be back with a sub 17 before the end of the year. When I told my dad a guy beat it in 24 minutes, he said there was no way. I also really want to see how top UV runners hold up in Nightmare. What makes ZeroMaster so great is he's the king of nightmare difficulty and many of the strats he's developed for that make the UV runs so much more competitive.
The war to sub-18 was absolutely epic! Three speedrunners pushing each other to improve their times it's unusual, and it's a thing that just could happen on Doom community. Thanks for bringing back Doom to the cannel, Karl!

Big Fan.
I hope you also had technical ideas for map 30 ;)
"And then Zeromaster casually drops X out of nowhere" Yeah that's surprisingly accurate :D
Fun fact, the Pacifist and Tyson categories were added officially to Doom speedrunning by Adam Hegyi
Geez, anticipating and hearing both Looper's and ZeroMaster's introductions gave me chills. They sure are massive legends
Tecnhically, triple amount of shotgun barrels isn't it.
From one to three.. he’s right!!
After binging Decino for the past two weeks. This seems like a personal treat, not gonna lie.
I've never seen such a diverse community in a video game. People from, Germany, Sweden, The Czech republic, Finland, norway, USA, hugary and more. Gotta love how the world unites over these things.
Check out Age of Empires II community, it is crazy global.
or Ocarina of Time
I noticed the exact same thing
@Hernando Malinche and that matters because?
@Hernando Malinche oh just...fuck off, really? As if it's meant to be taken literally
Can't recommend enough.
amazing work karl, love you

@snipple dipple Acknowledge that you do nothing but reply under people’s comments with the original phrases “No one asked” or “No one cares” because you have nothing better to do :/
It is funny to hear Czech names read by foreigners :D However you almost landed it perfectly actually, but still was funny to hear it :D Back to a point, another great video from you, I love your content and I always enjoy it. It must take such a long time to prepare the informations and data to make the video, I really do admire your work.
Imagine living in 1996 and being shown that 17:25 record.
I'm honestly craving a comprehensive history on significant level strategies and overall exploits.
Great video! I didnt see loopers 17:29 on stream, but I was there to witness a fail of a run that was on pace for an astonishing 17:13...
Ouch. On map 30?
@@pirx9798 yeah... The run ended up being a 17:39, 3 seconds off his PB at the time
You're an absolute legend, Karl Jobst!
So you are telling me Doom and Doom 2 were both landmark titles in the genre and are iconic even today? Can't wait for Doom 3 and knuckles.
Hello Karl, we absolute legends here.
Looper and Zero Master are so awesome for having eternal battles in Doom speedruns. Good job guys!
My uncle showed me doom back then in 90s. The old big diskets. Now he is sixty and he is impressed that ppl still play it :)
I'm getting Summoning Salt vibes and I like it
100%, i was going to say the same thing. This is a high quality video.
I think his videos are too long, and also too much pure data just "read from a paper" like every single time almost. This is a good middle ground with a little bit more backstory and perfect length being sub 30 min. But karl has always been absolutely (a legend) great doing videos like this with a perfect mix.
@@ottojagenstedt9740 ig you’re just not the audience Summoning Salt has catered to
@@hybridgaming8341 extremely
Dude, you have a real talent for this. We're lucky to get such amzing content for free.
Thank you!
This one sparks joy.
Not only do I really enjoy the game, but your form of presentation is amazing.
The absoute legend is back!
I didn't know a thing about Doom speedrunning before this channel but I can't get enough of these
Same!
"Sit back and relax" I can't relax.
From the hype?
I was already excited when I saw you were planing to release a new video about Doom today, but i couldnt guess itll be this topic. Ive been watching loopers livestreams in which he played the category for about four months and saw him progress in it. Its the first time ive seen the things, which will probably be shown in the video, myself before watching it, what makes me insanely excited about it. Thumbs up for putting this category in a video of yours!

Anybody else like the way Karl says "record"? Makes everything seem epic and important.
Everybody gangsta till the Doom 2 speedruner upgrades his pc
Legendary content, as always! Had the honor to witness Loopers first sub 18 live. Watching all that grind really puts into perspective all the hard work that goes into these runs.
You get sloshed surpisingly fast if you drink whenever Karl says "of all time" or "ever".
Take a swig every time you hear "he achieved... _this run_ ."
Why not stay in the theme and take a shot on every "speed"?
Love your videos. You were the person who made speedrunning actually interesting for me.
Hey, if you're missing the "home- were finally landing song" let me help ya:
wooooon
WOOOOOOOOOON
I’m always itching for your next upload and wonder why it takes so long but after watching this video I understand. You put great detail into it and time looking through so much of everyone’s runs. You are an absolute legend!!!
I always look forwards to these videos. There is something very satisfying about them. The pacing alongside recognition of technical excellence and creativity.
Addendum- I sure wish Ubisoft would do a remaster of the two Rainbow Six Vegas games as I would try for it again. ;)
Year 2050 : The newly discovered glitch "ultra void gliding" has managed to lower the D2All UV-Speed record below 15 minutes
I wouldn’t be surprised!
I've done it, I have achieved *ULTRA GLIDING*
I really appreciate how much work you do to make videos like THIS ONE. Thank you for giving us that piece of nostalgy and information, can't wait for next ones
"Me being an absolute genius though"
Great line. And I agree.
Great upload! You got me into Doom speedrunning. I look for live attempts on twitch all the time now
pulled a summoning salt right there
Karl thanks for getting into watching and following the speed running community. Guys like you and Bismuth and summoning salt, are the true Legends!
Last time I was this early Karl was not a Minecraft UA-cam.
Back to doom content, my day is complete
Loving listening to your videos while cooking. Ive listenied to a few of them multiple times. The perfect thing for a gamer to listen to while cooking.
Love the fact you mention the names of old skool legend whos contributions would be long forgotten to the masses. Its a great way to pay homage and at the same time level up peoples knowledge.
*"Doom isn't technically 3D"*
Yes it is, it has a Z-Axis and everything, it just skips checking for it in a number of circumstances, but it still frequently comes up regularly in gameplay.
Heretic literally has a jetpack item, but we're going to ignore that because I want to feel smart by saying "two point five deeeeee".
@@XenoSpyro There is something weird in duke nukem where your environment changes depending on how you move but isn't necessarily consistent. So you can have an air vent leading to somwhere and when you go to the same location outside of the airvent there is just a wide open field or something. Or a pillar where you do not return to the same place after circling around it for 360 degrees. I always thought those things were related to the term 2.5D but not sure the term even means anything. Maybe it just means "2D sprites in a 3D setting"
@@XenoSpyro that's not what 2.5D means, and good job on that strawman
@@commanderleo Ive seen people call doom 2.5D before, for the record, levels are stored in 2D, the game is in 3D, and the monsters were infinitely tall on purpouse to get better performance. Its why you can cross under missiles because their collision checks are cheaper

Thanks for helping me stay clean (for two years now), make content of my own, and keep my brain occupied when I start to feel those old anxieties creeping in on me. I’m engaged and living in my own house now, and your content has kept me going during some of the hardest parts of my battle. Thank you Karl Jobst! Awesome vid!
ZeroMaster will be back with a sub 17 before the end of the year.
I really want to see a history video for Nightmare as well because that is one I know a lot of old players that fell out of the scene claimed was impossible.
Feel like the channel should be named SpeedrunHistorian. This is like the narrated wikipedia of speedrunning. Love your content, mate ❤
The war to sub-18 was absolutely epic! Three speedrunners pushing each other to improve their times it's unusual, and it's a thing that just could happen on Doom community.
Thanks for bringing back Doom to the cannel, Karl!
It is odd to think about how old these games are now
And still so damn playable. The original Doom will be 30 years old in two years and it still gets the adrenaline going!
