Yes! I agree! I’ve stumbled upon Devin several days ago, Bastard appeared in my station (apple music). My head was blown away, I wish I had heard this sooner! I was so surprised to see that it was made in 97, it just sounds so up to date. It really says something when the first minute of your song makes people stop in their tracks and listen attentively.
Here I am in 2024, after only just discovering Devin like 3 weeks ago, thinking all these songs are from like... MAYBE the last 4 years or so, nahhhhh bruh - could not believe how long he's been around and to be so unbelievably talented aswell, jfc
He did an acoustic set and I shit you not I was crying like a little baby. And I look over and there are a bunch of grown men in the audience doing the same thing. I have never felt more comfortable in my life.
Reassuring to know that I am not the only emotionally confused person when listening to Devin Townsend. The Ocean Machine album gives me all sorts of emotional responses.
It's so funny xD My first thought was he was doing his very best to be a real man and not cry at a concert! .. which I'm pretty sure I would have done myself lmao :D
@@goimpyt easily proven. See my avatar? i have many pictures of me and Dev with and without this tattoo. Also if you own the "By a thread" dvd you can find me in the booklet. I am also on stage during Bend it like Bender on Dev's first concert in Oslo if you don't count The Wildhearts.. Easily I tell you.
This is by far the best song i know! And nothing will ever top it! 3 years after my relationship im still depressed but this song and melody just makes me want to live! Fuck yeah Devin you are saving lives♡
I know! It's the same for me. Very few artists can play their music better live. I listen to his live concerts all the time. My Retinal Circus DVD is wearing thin. And I just recently found my DVD for this show, so now it's time to wear this one down. But I go back and try to listen to the albums at work and all I can think is, "He does it better live". 🤟🏻😂 Granted his recorded work is still epic as fuck.
I like this version as well, but there is something about Deadhead that just makes the Album version better, also, why does he never play Depht Charge? (Btw the Halloween party doesnt count as "live")
If there's a giving God that exists, then I believe this man is one of the best artistical gifts to humanity that has ever existed. Just an otherworldly being in my opinion. He's beyond human lol
This performance is out of this world. I cycled to this everyday at work back in 2018 and it still brings memories back every time I hear those opening notes. Love you Devin 🙌
I saw Devin last night in Melbourne and even with a sore throat he sung beautifully, he hit every high and every low, and sounded better than his albums. I dont know how he does it. He's just incredible.
" I dont know how he does it. He's just incredible." The proper way to sing - with your diaphragm and not your throat. This is how he can go between screaming and clean so easily. You'd be amazed at the type of crap you can sing through given proper singing technique.
It's incredibly sad that these guys will no longer be performing together. This is the tightest live band I've ever seen, as well as my favorite. I was fortunate enough to see them five times, including once on their last tour with Clutch. I got the the front of the stage. Dev and I locked eyes for just a brief moment.. it was intense, and I like to think that he knew just how important that moment in time was in my life, simply by the look of wonder in bad on my face. We miss you, DTP....
But as far as I know it's no definite end of DTP. Just that he needs to do other stuff, I understood it that way tho. He will make music with them, but not for now. At least that's my dearest hope because I soo need to see them live. Found out about this awesome musician and his band just a week or so ago, binged on the tour vlog and watched those song videos hundreds of time. I must see them live!
@@KingSams0n Pretty much this. I doubt DTP will ever get back together again but I won't be surprised if Devy at least does a show where he invites the old crew out to play a few songs or something along those lines. Kinda like how he got Jed to come and play a bit for Retinal Circus.
I'm not gonna lie... I really miss the DTP. I know this song is from his pre-DTP stuff, but I didn't get in to Dev until seeing DTP live after a friend dragged me to a show. That show changed a LOT of me! I did have a chance to meet the whole DTP before an event on the Transcendence tour, and I'm sure I made a proper fool of myself fawning over them... even though we're are all about the same age. Still... I couldn't speak properly after singing along for the whole show. When I found Dev he restored my faith in music and creativity, and that regardless of age you should keep creating what you believe in! Hearing songs like this, and many DTP others, keep my creative fire lit when it wants to go out.
I saw DTP last year with my gf, and she said I had this huge smile on my face the whole show. I didn't think much of it until I saw one of their tour videos for that particular show. This man is gawd. There is not a single other musician on this planet that can write and perform such an epically powerful and moving song. Just. Perfection.
Fuck I love this song! Used to play it at work during a slow day to draw people in and hell yes it brought it nothing but metalheads. As you can imagine, the bosses didn't like it and it was technically illegal, but it made the shop an extra £20 so fuck it, I'M A BUSINESSMAN!!
I feel like a bastard most of the time. Finally, someone could describe what's it like in the art form with some crazy epic lord of the rings extraterrestrial sound.
I'm a little salty that I missed the Columbus, OH show... been a rough few weeks in my personal life, and this would have really hit the spot. This song's main riff is possibly my all-time favorite... has so much crunch and weight to it.

The solo is so simple but yet so powerful. Amazing performance.
Honestly, that's what I really like. It doesn't beat you over the head with complexity, it just sounds really good.
He underrates himself as a soloist
I love Devin's music, it helped me through a dark time a few years ago when my dad was unwell. It helped calm my mind
Devin is unique in rock music. I love the wall of sound, the sheer depth and atmosphere he creates live and in the studio. Exceptional always.
