  • TEACHER DEMO. This song is on p. 8 of Alfred's Adult Greatest Hits Level 1. It was composed by Paul Williams and Kenneth L. Ascher. Originally, Kermit the Frog sang it in the Muppet Movie in 1979, but it has been recorded by many musical artists since then and transcended the category of children's music. To name a few who have recorded this song: Sarah Mclachlan, Willie Nelson, The Carpenters, Judy Collins, Justin Timberlake, Gwen Stefani, and Jim Brickman. I'm partial to the Kenny Loggins recording of it.
This piano arrangement is by Dennis Alexander. You can play the eighth notes in a long/short rhythm to more closely resemble Kermit the Frog's rendition of it. I've heard it played and sung with even eighths or long/short. Try it both ways and see what your preference is. I like it both ways and I had a difficult time deciding which way to record it.

This has been a long time favorite of mine as well. I've enjoyed working on this song with piano students since the 80's. Mark Hayes has a great advanced piano arrangement of it as well. Norma

I'm learning this one at the moment, and it has been a struggle - doesn't flow nicely for me. Getting closer though! It will be learned eventually because, well, muppets!

I felt the same time ago, and it was really frustrating. Only the 4th song on elementary book, right? Wrong :] As you can see here www.hooktheory.com/theorytab/view/the-muppets/rainbow-connection this song is on average little more complex than many other popular ones, and it seems that is a little misplaced in the book. But this is an excellent song to learn as a beginner and also a challenging one. In my case I leave it and return to it several months later, when it was easier since I also was bit more resourceful.

Great video! this song is very nice. I find this one kind of hard though with the sudden eighths. At what bpm are you playing this song?

I am having a hard time with this one, it seems out of place in that book, it is just the fourth one in it :)

Yes, it probably could've been placed after "What A Wonderful World". But really not much further in. It will be interesting to see if you find the following songs easier or more difficult. Let me know, Norma.

I have two questions if I may:
    1. On the 5th measure (appears once more on the 13th) it seems to me you play the F# eighth note at the same time of G in the right hand is it supposed to be played like that or you do wait a small time for it, you play it very smooth and I am having quite a trouble of fitting this note so it would sound smooth. It feels it is a bit out of place, hope you can give me some advice on that.
    2. I noticed the at the 34th measure on the treble staff you play the harmony of the F# and B treating the former as a quarter note and the latter as an eighth, I thought they were both eighths, how would it have been written if they were both eighths? I find it quite confusing.

In measure 5 & 13, the quarter note G in the right hand is held while the left hand plays the F#. So they will hit quite quickly one after the other but not directly at the same time. In answer to question 2: They are both eighths, I simply was a bit lazy with the F# and didn't let go of it as quickly as I should have. Hope that clarifies things. --Norma

92PianoKeys It does, thank you for your answer, I still try to work on playing it as smooth as you do, I somehow make the F# quite out of place. The quick jumps on the left hand during this song aren't simple too.
Thank you for the time of answering my question you have been helping a lot to my progress :)

@@92pianokeys40 Hi Norma, I know this is an old comment but you are actually incorrect here. At least in the book I have the F# is clearly a quarter note while the B is two eighth notes with an additional quarter tie.

@@joggerman8455 Aloha Jogger Man, That's so interesting. I just pulled out the book that I have and in measure 34 the F# and B are both 8th notes connected by one stem. Maybe they changed it in a different edition to "two-part" writing but they generally don't do that in Level 1. Thank you for taking the time to read the comments and study your music so carefully. Your attention to detail will serve you well in your music study. --Norma
