I love that you share all of these artists with us too. It’s like we’re in a real live art class. I think something very important to know about values, is, that values are relative, in a way. It depends on what level of lightness is paired with the level of darkness.
Stephen King's 'House on Maple Street' is one of his most underrated story, and it's based on one of the Chris von Allsburg paintings featured in this video!
I desaturate my paintings with instagram all the time to check the tonal contrast. I do think that colors do have an inherent value range. Red is generally darker than yellow. Purple is inherently darker than red. You can subvert these natural ranges to make a dark yellow ochre, or a very light lavender, but they do have their own inherent value identities
