My favorite movie backgrounds are Bambi and Sleeping Beauty. They used layers of glass paintings slowly sliding them in different times to get the feel of the deer walking through the forest. And in sleeping beauty I love how they echoed some of the artwork of old England. I love one scene in the Labyrinth where they used a painting to show the labyrinth with the castle in the distance, I sat there for days trying to draw it and get it to look real when I was little.
I love the way you explain things. We can tell by your smile and the way you talk how much you love art, and that makes the video so interesting to see.
Response to 38:30 > I am an Electrician , and an Artist . The best of both worlds . I wish you would have talked about a Maxfield Parish painting . He is one of the top on my list of favorite painters . Your use of his work as the icon to this video made me take notice . My favorite technique in art is atmospheric perspective , both of oriental brush art , and Maxfield Parish . Thanks for this vid.
one of my literal favourite things to do right now even when im stressing about my exams, is to sit back with some coffee, a weighted blanket and the entire art prof channel and just go full potato mode lol. and i dont feel too guilty because im learning so much ! i also wanted to ask about the free live critique, do you guys take photography as submissions? thanks :)
I appreciate this channel so much. I'm able to learn so much for free and I love listening to these long talks and streams while I work! Thanks so much you guys are the best! :)
I'm grateful to have your lessons in my home studio. Hearing advice from an awesome painter is helping me develop at a wonderful pace. I wouldn't know George Tooker without you!
These are so great! I'd love to see a video addressing compositions for paintings (particularly landscape but portraits too) as there seems to be so many conflicting suggestions and 'rules' for them, like the (now unfashionable) rule of thirds and golden ratio, to the headache-inducing dynamic symmetry and its bajillion lines. I'd also love something on light and shadow: the colours of shadows, the hard /soft edge of light, the direction they both appear to travel in, how different light sources affect everything else; there's so much to consider. :O
We got you covered on light and shadow: ua-cam.com/video/vt-xNqlhGGA/v-deo.html Definitely more composition videos to come, there's so much to cover! -Prof Lieu
@@artprof Lol yes, thank you,; I did find it and watched that one afterwards, the Michael Fassbender video that also talks a little about light. ;) I think I'd still love to see light/shadow/reflection questions in relation to landscape though, and maybe also interiors? Like, are the shadows of vertical things always vertical, is there a rule for what colour a shadow should be, is there a warm/cool relation to the light source; the difference between soft and hard outlines, etc. And the nature of natural light in different times of day, locations, seasons; omg there's just so much. :O *Super* excited for your future composition videos though, thank you!!
I just found this, thank you. It makes sense out of a lot of what I've seen. VanAllsburg is my favorite! I have the portfolio which are large illustrations along with the story. Zhenya Gershman does a series for Royal Talens and her most recent was Kathe Kollwitz. It is wonderful.
Thank you sooo much Prof for this wealth of information!! It has enriched my life sooo much! Cant thank enough. AND and and backgrounds are bane for me, so I appreciate these related videos more
I am addicted to all art classes you are amazing professor i am taking painting and drawing classes at the art student league of nyc 🎨💜🌈 keeps the excellent generous work for art lovers
I sometimes make my backgrounds so pretty sometimes I don't want to cover them up! I like to put in the skies first when I do a landscape, then I don't want to finish
Thank you for this wonderful video. I paint a lot of landscapes and this video has a wealth of knowledge for me to take away. I also loved the examples that you used.
I love it if you could make a vid for blocking in only...specifically for me weather to use liquin for oil blocking or not at this stage baring in mind fat over lean
I'd really like a demo on how to paint people looking up and people reaching out toward the viewer from the painting. Those are two poses I can never seem to get right.
We have many videos that discuss abstraction in this playlist: ua-cam.com/video/HZp3PBnSaA8/v-deo.html . It's complicated, because what might seem like obvious random shapes, may not for for someone else. -Prof Lieu
This was great. Very informative. I don't have the money to go to formal art school. I'm always looking for an Art Fundamentals 101 online as it would be in college.
Check out our Basics Curriculum! It walks you through all of the fundamentals: artprof.org/learn/curriculums/basics-overview-curriculum-for-self-taught-artists/ and if you want something more structured, our Tracks are a sequence of video lessons and assignments you can do at your own pace: artprof.org/library/learn/tracks/ -Prof Lieu
I've recently found these art talk video streams and would love to know when the next one will be and what topic? I'm GMT so fingers crossed I could hop onto the live chat as well
Is there an exercise I can do to my photography? It may seems weird, but I think I have difficulty expressing my emotions through photography... I think it seems like I need confirmation on what I presented is correctly related to how I want to communicate my emotion. Hope it make sense.

hey there! I am hoping to get some advice with creating atmospheric perspective with evening pieces. especially ones with a bright sky light source.( like a moon or aurora)
Hi! Thank you so much for watching-- we don't have a specific video on that subject, but this one might have some cool tips! It's about landscape drawing with pastels: ua-cam.com/video/GzeNBBBd2Ws/v-deo.html I hope this helps! - Mia Rozear, Art Prof Staff
Backgrounds are something that I feel really weird in drawing because I was short sighted for so many years that seeing a detailed background or giving it more than colors vaguely defining shapes seems foreign to me
Not to be a party pooper, but that giveaway may be against the law. You can't make people pay for an opportunity to win something. You have to also let someone have the option to enter free, such as to send in your name and address on a postcard for free entry (give them a free option). You can be exempt from that in some states if you have a gambling license and pay a gambling tax. I would check with your lawyer. I love your videos by the way and good luck
