Italian Air Force in the USSR Part 2
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 лип 2023
- In May 1942, Italy strengthened its ground forces in the USSR while aviation units were mostly just refreshed with new Fighter and Recon groups replacing ones deployed in 1941. But some new types were deployed too, primarily the more advanced Macchi C.202 Folgore. But the increasing quality of Soviet Air Force will present new challenges to the Italian pilots.

The perfect way to begin a Saturday, with Showtime112 historical videos. General Enrico Pezzi, who was killed while evacuating wounded Italian soldiers after personally delivering supplies, was a fine example of a leader who shared the dangers of his soldiers and airmen. Many Italian officers were killed in action in Russia, while leading from the front. Well done, casting light on those who served with distinction.
Thanks, I'm glad you are satisfied. Also, thank you for the sponsorship!
@@showtime112 Your videos offer a refreshing, yet sober look at history, so your work merits support. Thank you for the fine productions.
Luftwaffe pilots preferred the various Damiler up-engined Italian fighters to their own Bf109s, mainly because of the superior cockpit design allowing for as much as +20% more space, with better maneuverability and airspeed performance
Yeah, late war Italian fighters were absolute beasts. I honestly think that the G55 Centauro was the best fighter of WW2.
Definitely interesting seeing these less well known aspects of major conflicts.
Thank you for your feedback!
This is Great historical lessons, most people dismiss the Italian war effort without Analysis the record.
Thanks for the comment! I believe the Italian involvement deserves some more attention.
They do the same with the Romanians and the Spanish as well
Excellent video on par with the previous part 1. You gained a new subscriber. Allow me one little note. The correct name of the 21st Group Commander is Major Ettore Foschini. The 21st Group comprised of the 356th, 361st, 382nd and 386th Squadrons. Both the 21st and the 22nd groups comprised 4 Squadrons because designated "Autonomous" or Indipendent i.e. not belonging to a Wing (Stormo), instead of the three for "regular" Groups of a Wing. Notwhistanding the shorter period of time (3 years of operations) and other factors, the "small" number of kills (when compared to German or Allied pilots) by the Italian pilots is due to the fact that the Regia Aeronautica did not "like" to record individual victories for fear of creating "Prima Donna" (something experienced during the WW1). The Regia Aeronautica dissuaded the pilots from claiming personal victories and preferred to assign the victory to the unit. The aerial victory would be credited to a pilot IF AND ONLY IF this pilot was the ONLY ONE to fire at the enemy plane (if another plane had fired at the enemy plane even without hitting it, the eventual victory would be credited to the Squadron or Group). Moreover the shoot down must have been witnessed and confirmed by another pilot.
Thank you for the feedback and for providing additional info. As for Major Foschini, that one seems to be a typo on my part. I remember some strange feeling when reading the name in the text but I didn't check it. I will have to learn to listen to my intuition :)
@@showtime112 My contributions are based on the many books (too many to list here) that I have read but also on the correspondence that I had with Serg. Magg. (Flight Sergeant) Luigi Gorrini, second highest Italian fighter ace. He passed away in November 2014 at the age of 97. One of my most precious possession is an autographed copy with dedication of the book "Vespa 2" (Wasp 2, his call sign) recounting his wartime career in the 85th Squadron (18th Group, 3rd Wing) of the Regia Aeronautica and in the 1st Group of the Aeronautica Nazionale Repubblicana.
Excellent and informative. Thank you.!
Fantastic working history of Italian air force campaign over the soviet union. Have you read a book called hurricanes over Singapore by Brian Cull and Paul Sortehaug its a great story of hurricane pilots who fought against Japanese over Singapore Java Palembang and Ceylon.
Thanks for the feedback and the suggestion. I know about this book and it is on my to read list. It does sound like it would be a good source for video topics.
Another excellent video! I've been watching for a while, and I am impressed by your excellent pronunciation of various languages. I speak three and I am knowledgeable of a few more and I always try to use correct pronunciation. I appreciate your efforts in military aviation history, and I enjoy it very much. I hope you can continue with these great videos.
Thanks! I've studied a bunch of languages in my life and Italian is one of them so I have a pretty good idea how it is pronounced. Most English speaker are absolutely terrible at it 😁 My plan is to continue with the content as long as possible, hope you stick around!
Giovanni Bonet, Giulio Torresi, Vittorio Minguzzi, Giorgio Jannicelli, Carlo Miani, Germano La Ferla, Giuseppe Biron and Enrico Meille flew in Russia.
Thanks for adding information!
Absolutely loved it, knew your channel would take off, no pun intended, originally.
Kind of a cruel decision when there were still Italian ground forces in action… if the surrounded troops didn’t comprise all of them.
Thank you for your positive feedback!
Thanks for the detailed reporting of the events.
Thank you for watching!
One more excellent video. Thank you for bringing more knowledge to all of us.
Thank you for watching and appreciating it!
Outstanding. Its like going back to school. Every Saturday is a new piece of history learnt
Thanks for the comment! A lot of these historical details are unknown or forgotten. I really enjoy digging through those stories.
Amazing video, love the footage and the info, thanks!
Thank you for the feedback!
This is interesting, with discovery of unknown air battles.Subbed.😊
Another fascinating video many thanks 👍🏻
I'm glad you appreciate it, thank you!
Nice pair of videos, Showtime112. I have the French-language version of Paolo Raffaelli's graphic novel, 'Umberto Mistri: Pilota', «Umberto Mistri: Aviateur», with some scenes of the Regia Aeronautica in action on the Eastern Front, so this sort of brings that to life.
Thanks, I'm glad it brought back some nice memories!
Regia Aereonautica had 132 aces ( according the right ace denomination ) ; so pilots with at least 5 victories . The 2 workhorses of their successes were the Saetta but most importantly the Folgore , which performed well in North Africa and on the Mediterrean theather , mainland and balcans included . Credits go to the biplane Fiat CR42 but at the early stage of WW2 naturally .
Love these videos.
I'm happy to hear it, thank you for subscribing!

And yet another magnificient video by showtime. Great work! It would be nice if you could cover some of the fights and operations from eastern europe since they get very little attention
Thanks for the feedback! I plan to do something like that in the future. Romanian Air Force seems particularly interesting.
@@showtime112 the romanian-made fighter, IAR 80/81 has a pretty interesting history and has participated in big events such as operation tidal wave, where it would attack american incoming b24 liberators

Thanks! I have some info but I need to do more research. I plan to cover that story someday.

I remember a German colleague saying Italians were the most unreliable army Germany ever had to live with.
Yet the Italians covered the nazi retreat at Alamein & helped save the German trucks by not climbing in & letting them roll away empty.
You germans were our most appalling ally we ever had
Gran trabajo y un tema desconocido.
Thanks a lot!
Thanks! I like a lot Italian fighters like the "Saeta", the "Folgore" or "Veltro".
Thanks for the comment! I intend to cover the Regia Aeronautica more in the future. Possibly also Italian aircraft in foreign service.
The C202 was the most undervaluated fighter of WWII...
You can definitely say it's rarely listed among the most famous fighters of WWII. I hope to cover it some more in the future.
Did the Hungarian or Romanian air forces make any significant contributions to the air war in the east? If so that might make a good video. I’d watch it.
I have no idea how significant their involvement was but I'd absolutely watch that.
There is a whole bunch of Romanian WWII aces. I actually have a book about them and I read it a long time ago but I might read it again soon. There should be some good material. Hungary produced a number of aces too.
I have a few books on the Hungarian Air Force’s operations on the Eastern Front, they operated in relatively limited numbers, but I think more than the Italians, and initially flew outdated types, like a locally modified Italian Reggiane Re-2000, known as the MÁVAG Héja, powered by a license produced Gnome Rhone Mistral Major. Later in the war they were equipped with Bf-109’s and FW-190’s. They also operated Stukas, Dornier 215’s, Junkers Ju 88’s, Heinkel He 111’s and Messerschmitt Me 210’s and 410’s among a lot of other types. They extensively modified the Me 210 and managed to make quite an effective aircraft out of it, unlike most of its operators.
Hungarians tend to be quite fastidious in their academic research and the books I have are quite exhaustively researched and well written. Hungary certainly produced a few aces on the Eastern front.
@@Pete-tq6in Thanks for the info. Hopefully he’ll cover that stuff in an upcoming video, would love to know more about what they did to the Me-210.
The Hungarian AF operated units called Ezrel while the Rumanians called them FARR. There were about half a dozen of these units on the front. They definitely outnumbered the Italian air units (as did their ground forces).
Great presentation as always from Showtime 112. Thanks for showing us part of forgotten aviation history. ♠️🎩🎯🎱🇺🇸🏁🇺🇦🔱🌻💮💮🌸🌺🌼🏴☠️🏹

The biggest weakness of WW2 Italy was the poor equipment. Italian soldiers were brave and determined.

Are you familiar with the free french Normandie-Niemen squadron? That fought with the Russians on soviet yakolev fighters? You could do a video about it! Would love to see that.
I have a general idea but I'd need to research on details. It could be a good topic.
Enrico Pezzi was my Father' General on the Eastern front . His Captain was Ettore Valenti ( from Rovereto ,Trento ) ,Together they served mostly in Ukraine , After the war Captain Valenti became General Valenti .

Hello Showtime! Is this IL-2 Cliffs Of Dover Blitz or Battle Of Stalingrad? Looks like Battle Of Stalingrad, but I never saw G.50 there.
Hello! This is actually War Thunder. I used IL-2 Great Battles for several videos but WT offers a huge selection of different types so I use it a lot now.

Hey you should do a series on the Romanian Air Force during WW2!!
I'm planning it. Romania had plenty of aces, fought against three major powers and operated an indigenous fighter type. There's a lot of material to cover potentially.
Dear friend. Thanks for second part. You know this part of war better than me. Middle east wars are better for me.

@@showtime112 Hello mate, enjoy your holiday at seaside, maybe on dalmatian coast.
My wife going well. In few days , nurse will remove stitches . Good healing now
Its nice to see you specified it was a claimed ratio, I'd imagine the overall exchange probably still favoured the Italians given their general techical advantages and flight expirience at least until the 2nd half of 1942. But of course, everybody overclaimed.
It is true that everybody overclaimed, often honestly. I believe that Italians were doing pretty well until mid 1942 and then things apparently started to go bad.
@@showtime112 after that date their aircraft would have been badly outnumbered and outclassed
True, and because shot down enemies were attributed mostly as "shared" to intensify cooperation over hunt for the kill, the amount of actually shot down airplanes was often quite confusing.
C202 😍
It's an interesting plane for sure.
@@showtime112 I am a little biased in its favor, but I think it was a very good one, armament aside
Nice work hopefully Nomahan air battles will get the treatment soon 👍

Like we can see, the italians did not know a great success in the eastern front. But they did not improved their aviation, no one new model except the MACCHI C202 FOLGORE. There was an improvement of this plane, it was the MACCHI C205 VELTRO with a german engine a little bit more powerful but it arrived too late in the project of the italian production, on june 43, when the allied landed in Italia. So all the italian strength went to the national resistance, the game was over.
They had some success initially but since mid 1942, the things started to go downhill. C.202 was an improvement but only a very small number was sent to the Eastern Front and they couldn't make a difference.
Salut Jeanne. Rien de plus a dire sur cette vidéo car show Time en sait plus que moi. Sinon a la minute 2:13 est représenté le Fiat BR20M, l'avion des " pique niqueurs 😋 pendant la bataille d'Angleterre.
