Mason Sizemore I disagree on the whole, but agree in moment to moment. He has better flashes here, but the vast majority of the story John is essentially just angry and threatening violence to everyone.
mdogg094 remember john at the braithwaite manor when his son was kidnapped? that’s his mood the entire game because his family is kidnapped- makes a lot more sense
@@rampagerichard If he wasn't sick his redemption. arc probably wouldn't have happened or at least most of it wouldn't have, but if it did, he would have stayed running with John at the end and not fight micah. But if it plays out like it did and Arthur and Micah fight I am fairly confident micah would be dead in 2 seconds lmao
Is it though? I know Dutch was basically rewritten for RD2, and the gang as we now know it didn't exist when this game came out. So to me, the final confrontation with Dutch does NOT feel like the culmination of the events of RD2 (both Arthur's ending and the showdown with Micah). Aside from the "you can't fight gravity" line which was great but kinda shoehorned into RD2, there's really nothing. So my feelings didn't really change that much upon replaying this game after finishing the sequel.
The opening dialogue is pretty cringe though. Rest of the game is amazing! but that opening train ride dialogue was obviously written by a liberal activist desperate to shoehorn his "message" into the story. Sickening.
You’re right it’s hilarious asf! 😂 “Looks like it’s me and you John! You should’ve stayed at home! SON OF A BITCH! GOD DAMNIT!” 😂😂😂 without the shootout gameplay it sounds like he has Tourettes! 😂
I love how John goes to tip his hat out of habit at 14:39 and realises he doesnt have it on, which then leads to him asking for his stuff. Thats the type of animation that gives character, you dont see that nowadays.
I just realized Dutches speech during the 3:15:50 scene is exactly the same one that he used when he and Arthur jumped off the cliff into the river to escape the Pinkertons!
Whenever Jack says "I'm sure your husband will be just fine." I like to imagine that Ross came to visit Abigail, she asked about John, and he said the exact same thing. Brings a small bit more poetic justice.
Sometimes it's the smallest of details that really highlights how chacters feel. Marston has this small, subtle smile at 2:02:30 when Ricketts makes a joke over cards. It makes you feel that Marston really likes and respects the old gunslinger.
Yeah, Red Dead I and II especially do an amazing job of showing us our protagonist when he is really listening, or being influenced. As good as the dialogue delivery always is, the camera often cuts to the protagonist's live, developing reaction.
3:41:22 I wonder what John was thinking about.. in that last minute, Abigail, Jack? Arthur, the Good old days... until he couldn’t hold on any longer. I’m upset now
He faced death at the beginning going up to fort mercer alone to try protect his family from the agents. Got himself shot by bills man and was probably meant to be dead. Abigail came along and saved him. He sacrifices himself again at the end of his story but he knew he was greatly outgunned this time with even more ruthless men but he faced them all the same. Perhaps this is why John meets the strange man (death/grim reaper) he still had things to do. He was always a dead man. He survived fort mercer but met the same end after everything anyway. Was it Dutch Vander Lindt that said "you cant fight fate. You can't fight gravity, john"
@@lk8300 "when I am gone they will find another monster " Dutch knew john would die the agent will never let the Marston family away a dying man (Dutch) never lies
When you put RDR1 and RDR2 together it creates one of the greatest stories ever told in my opinion. RDR1 is my top 3 all time and RDR2 is my number 1 all time favorite video game. The story telling is on par with some of the greatest films and tv shows ever the character development is on the same level breaking bad was and the acting is oscar worthy. RDR1 was way ahead of its time when it came out and RDR2 is arguably gaming's greatest achievement graphically and story wise. I played this game for my grandfather and he said it's like watching a deadwood cartoon.
@@BlackWolf-pk8tx No way, unfortunately I did not feel nearly the same way about The Last of Us as I did Red Dead Redemption 1 or 2. No doubt it's good, but Rockstar really, reaaaaaaally knocked it out of the park on this one. Uncharted couldn't even hold my attention. Red Dead Redemption 1 and 2 will be remembered for a very long time as western classics of the Video Game industry.
I think I’m the only one who thinks it’s badass to play as Jack at the end of the whole series. Especially now after rdr 2 is out and after seeing him as a kid growing up in that whole mess and literally being the only surviving member of the gang besides Tilly, Mary-Beth, Pearson and reverend. Just how he waited 3 years after his mom died to go and get his revenge and avenge his father and realistically, also avenging the whole lot of all the gang members who died because of the righteousness of the Pinkertons.
Jack, as a narrative device, is perfectly fine. But there are two main issues I have with him: 1) John Marston becomes such an absolute icon throughout the game, it's hard to let him go. Seeing as we barely have any story missions with Jack, we do not really get to see what he is like, what he thinks, his humour, his demeanor, his outlook on life, etc... All we see is an angry, vengeful boy. While this may have been intentional (john wanted a better life for his son, but jack ended up just another gunslinger with a mean streak), it's a somewhat bitter pill to swallow after having played as John for 95% of the game. 2) Jack has no respect for his horse, and it makes me hate him.
It's a testament to Rockstars writing that they're able to take an unlikable, annoying hillbilly villain from the first game and turn him into a character you genuinely cared for in the prequel. I'll always feel sorry for Bill, I feel like he would've sided with Arthur had there been more support.
Bill was Bill. Loyal to Dutch and him only. In RDR2 he mentions he wants to start a gang, but remains loyal to Dutch. After Dutch goes nuts, Bill does what Bill does best, trying hard as fuck not to fuckup.
Wasn’t Bill gay or Bi? I’m pretty sure in his letter of termination from the Army that the reason was sexual deviancy, right? I’m kind of wondering if he was in love with Dutch lol.
Bruh. Bill was a racist and lazy asshole who was also dumb as shit. He treated Lenny, Javier and Charles so horrible cause they were not white. Hosea should’ve capped his ass
@@weplo1597 I would still argue John is the same in RDR2, just less experienced and not ready to be a father. He’s pretty much back to his old self by the end of RDR2.
@@weplo1597 he was conflicted, with his struggles regarding his family and the outlaw life, being on the run, being paranoid and especially how his father figure, the man that saved him, Dutch, was crumbling before his eyes.
"We gotta stop meeting like this." They meet on a snowy mountain last time when they both wanted to kill Micah, now the Government got John to kill Dutch, just like Micah with the Government wanted to kill the whole gang.
Never played this game. I gotta say Rockstar did an amazing job with the dialogue and story. I'm watching this like a movie and having more fun than anything I've seen recently.
You can make John look fatter by feeding him a lot. You can check your result when you press the settings button (PS4, I don't know what is that button called on Xbox One) and then go to Player.
2:25:00 for some reason, I had put on a disguise with a sombrero before starting that mission. When the cutscene punching De Santa started, John was still wearing the sombrero and it was bobbing back and forth on his head. I completely lost it at that point.
I will admit one thing the second game doesn’t have compared to this was the cutscene ambience. It was quiet, hardly any music, and John and the other characters talked and spoke like they were in a 1960’s western film. The next game went for a more modern styled cutscenes because they wanted to focus a lot more on the story and characters, but I think this game was all about that aesthetic. Kinda like how The Lost and Damned felt like Sons of Anarchy or Franklin’s missions in GTA V felt like a hip hop drama
It's funny to me. I've been around since before the original GTA came out, so yeah, the improvement in graphics quality since back then is pretty drastic. At the same time, I look at RDR2, and still don't think that is even close to photorealistic. I'm not sure exactly what photorealistic is, beyond that I won't know it when I see it, which is sort of the point of photorealism.
Imagine in the first game it showed John walking with Charles and sending him on his way, playing the first one we’d never know who he was. But as we’d play the second one we’d see how important Charles was and how good of a friend he was.
The fact that John got off of a Steamboat in Blackwater clearly indicates that he was elsewhere. And seeing as Saint Denise is the only other place that had a Steamboat tells me that John had to of been in Saint Denise. Rdr 2 really opens a person's eyes to Rockstars plans. This proves that they already was already planning on making another addition to rdr and that their plan was, way before they released teasers, to go back in the past. Truly hope that they find a way to make another addition to the RDR series because this was, by far, the game series that put Rockstar on the map
Wonders Nope. John specifically mentions that he had a daughter who died years after he left the gang. The existence of John’s daughter literally makes no sense now. Especially since Javier mentions John’s farm and his daughter as well. Two things that he shouldn’t know about. Plus, with how RDR2 is, it’s as if she never existed at all.
@@Deathpool_04 There was a time between the end of rdr2 and the epilogue where john and abigail are moving about and john is adapting to becoming a citizen. I think it's like 1907 or something, so the time between 1899 and 1907 is enough time to have a daughter, who at that age with very little stability could pass from a variety of sicknesses. A lot of children didn't survive back then from stuff they'd survive from these days. My own family i can track back to a photo we have of a mother with about 14 kids who then all passed besides 3 of them. It happened a lot, sadly.
rkhale02 I think you’re missing the point. RDR2 would still contradicts what John said about her. He said that he had a daughter who died years after he left the gang while Javier knows about her and the farm. Two things he shouldn’t know about at all. He wouldn’t know where John and his family are when they are in hiding and he’s was in Mexico. If Bill told Javier, how would he know that too? Especially when the daughter died anyway. I also doubt the Pinkterons would actually tell Bill or anybody about John’s dead daughter. If she died after RDR2 ended, there is no tombstone of her anywhere. In the epilogue, it seems like she wasn’t born yet since they act like she ever existed. One of the dialogues you could have with Uncle is where John says “I thought I already had a child to look after”, then Uncle says “you weren’t doing so well with him, so god gave you a second chance”, and John says “two children now”. It’s as if they never the second child yet.
I kinda hope R* decides to fix this. It's so weird for them to have another child and then barely mention her. In RDR1, it makes sense since she probably died young (a heartbreaking thing) and we didn't have a sequel-prequel. With RDR2 though, I assumed we would have more information on the daughter, especially at the epilogue where she would probably be a baby/toddler but we don't. Weird.
While Arthur is MILES better than John, I hate how people act like John Marston wasn’t considered one of the greatest characters ever when Red Dead first released.
Learning how John became John in RDR2 gave me a lot of closure I was never happy with losing John at the end of RDR and I tried my best to win that final barn show down
It's such fine storytelling that the last thing Dutch said was so prophetic. To justify their wages the agents killed the last gang member John. I love how even after all the bollocks Dutch comes out with across both games these events show that he still knows an awful lot and is a very intelligent man who probably has s smidgen of a right to act how he did. No one does characters like Rockstar

The final confrontation with Dutch is so much more powerful after RDR2.
The feeling you're time has indeed pass & have no place in the world makes it real
Is it though? I know Dutch was basically rewritten for RD2, and the gang as we now know it didn't exist when this game came out.
But there are two main issues I have with him:
1) John Marston becomes such an absolute icon throughout the game, it's hard to let him go.

John had a daughter? There's no mention of this in rdr 2, so i guess john and abi tried for another kid after the events rdr 2
john had his daughter waaaaaayy before the events of rdr2, its an old memory at that point
Weird.
