A very good question. Miku is the rhythm guitarist and writes most of the lyrics. She does incorporate English words/phrases based on what works best for the overall sound. Thanks for continuing down the "pigeon" hole with Band-Maid - the best hard rock group of the 21st century!

For the Band Maid lyrics Miku Kobato has earned notoriety in Japanese music scene.

    • @greylocke100
      @greylocke100 10 місяців тому +10

@@asicdathens Yes, she is actually considered to be an accomplished poet in Japanese with the way she writes her lyrics. She uses a lot of metaphor, and with some of the lyrics they way she would use the kanji alters the meaning. Going by their interview on the NHK show "Songs of Tokyo" she intentionally uses 3 kanji lyrics which can be read in more than one way.

@@greylocke100 I think Kobato explained her use of four-character idioms, Japanese idioms made with four kanji characters.
Many of them are unique to Japan but are also often derived from the classical literature of ancient China. They contain wisdom or life lessons where may reference old myths or folklore, or Buddhist ideas, or anything in the culture. In Japanese it is something like an abbreviation, the meaning can't necessarily be derived from their component words, (not even in Chinese). It's not an appropriate analogy, but it might feel like abbreviations for Latin epigrams.

@@napodyna6981 Thank you, I couldn't for the life of me remember it correctly and I wasn't on my computer so I couldn't look up the file. May I use your explanation in a text file for future reference?

    • @napodyna6981
      @napodyna6981 10 місяців тому +7

@@greylocke100 Sure, I'm glad if it helped you. BTW, there are also mere idioms, not wisdom or life lessons.
Maximum the Hormone's "予襲復讐 [Yoshū Fukushū]", which deals with bullying at school, is coined by them, literally "Preemptive attack Revenge", where it could be read as "Preemptive attack for revenge". "Yoshū Fukushū", however, is a four-character idiom that usually spells "予習復習", which simply means "Prepare and review".
The titles of _Unseen World_ discs are simply translated as "Roots" for 1 and "Progress" for 2, respectively. However, the former [原点回帰/Geten Kaiki] is a four-character idiom meaning "Return to basics [the point of origin]", while the latter [現点進化/Genten Shinka] is a word coined by Kobato that is a variant of the former and may means something like "Evolution at the present point".

Girl power, exactly! And not losing any of their feminine qualities. On stage they are light-hearted, charming, playful, sexy AND heavy! Don't think there was ever a girlband that ticked all these boxes to such a professional degree, and was blessed with such musical finesse.

From JAPAN Thank you for reaction BAND-MAID.
BAND-MAID is a five-member girls rock band. They are celebrating their 10th anniversary this year. The members have not changed. They are a hard rock band and fans consider them one of the best hard rock bands in the world. They usually have 20 songs and 2 hours gig. Formed in Japan in 2013, led by side guitarist Miku Kobato. Miku has experience working at a maid cafe in Akihabara, Tokyo, and came up with the idea of playing cool music in her maid outfit. That's why the band was named BAND-MAID. Now they write, compose and arrange all their songs. Now they have over 130 original songs. And 51 music videos have been released on the official UA-cam, all of which are killer songs.
They had a US tour in May and August of this year. There are many videos taken by fans on UA-cam now.

Great one Ladies!! Yes, the Maids know few musical limitations.
This song is actually written specifically for an Anime. It’s the anime Closer song. I believe the anime is a premised on pretty much constant fighting, so Miku’s (Red Flower 🌺, Rhythm Guitarist, backing vocals) lyrics are written around the themes of the anime.
We call it the Band-Maid “Pigeon Hole”, rather than Rabbit Hole. It’s goofy but it’s because Miku sorta identifies as a half-pigeon. PO! 😂. Her last name is Kobato which apparently uses the same Kanji characters as “Small Pigeon”, and she’s very “pigeoned” toe’d, too, so it’s just a fun way to differentiate the Maids journey from everyone else. 🤷🏻‍♂️
Miku is the founder of the band. She worked 3 jobs trying to become a professional singer, and one was working at a Maid Cafe. She loves the outfits and thought combing the Maid aesthetic with hard rock music would be a cool juxtaposition. She was right!! And then she found the 4 best people in Japan to form the band! 😎🚀
Now that you’ve done one of their heaviest songs in Shambles, you should check out one of their mellower songs, the goosebump generating
    - “Daydreaming” - official live video
or listen to their tribute to the fans who came to see them on their 2022 US Tour. They were afraid no one would remember them through the pandemic but ofc Maidiacs came out in droves and the tour sold out everywhere, so they wrote the mellow and beautiful
    - “Memorable” - official MV
Enjoy the incredible journey with Miku, Misa, Kanami, Akane & Saiki!! Take care and rock on 🤘🏼🔥🎸🥁🎤🎼😀✌🏼

Yes, I understand you ladies. It's sometimes difficult to read the lyrics and listen to a Band Maid song, especially when it's a banger like Shambles as the music and the voices of its magicians causes shambles in your head. They made this song for a fighting anime and the lyrics are adapted to the theme and characters although we can also draw inspiration and personal motivation from it. Kobato is a poet and a thinker. Thanks

This is one of their fastest songs. Also check out Daydreaming for a ballad, Memorable for a slow one. That one was literally written to the fans.

Are you guys in the Springs? You mentioned Powers ...
This was written on commission "as the ending theme for the second season of the Japanese anime series Kengan Ashura" per Wikipedia. Miku (the cute one on rhythm guitar, backup vocals, with the red rose and pigtails) writes most of their lyrics. Maybe others can answer better but she has said she sometimes chooses English words or phrases because they "sound cool" to Japanese ears, and sometimes because they express something more succinctly than Japanese can (Japanese omits a lot of things understood by context that English spells out), and sometimes just because they are good for a "sing-along."
I wish I understood Japanese culture better - she uses references to folk tales, Buddhist philosophy, and traditional poetry in her lyrics and they deepen the meaning quite a lot. A childhood friend of my older sister grew up in Japan (for a few years at least) and became a translator for international companies and the government. I showed her some lyrics and she picked up on a phrase that translates literally "over the rocks" but implies a lot more - she pointed out that Japan is an island nation way off the coast of mainland Asia and they live by fishing. Their island is volcanic and the shoreline is very rough and rocky most places, like the coast of Oregon. When fishermen returned home, they often had to negotiate the rocks offshore, and they were relieved when they made it "over the rocks." They knew they were going to make it to shore safe and sound, and back to the safety of their homes and families. One little phrase added so much if you knew the context, and I'm sure it's scattered all through her lyrics.

Before you were born, there was a wild, theatrical band out of New York that couldn’t get much radio play, despite their concerts being the stuff of legend.
Band Maid is very much like KISS in that regard.
There is something special that happens when they are serving an audience. You haven’t really heard Band Maid until you’ve seen and heard them live.
“Domination” was your first Band Maid music video. It would be great to have you contrast that with the official live performance at Line Cube Shibuya, Valentine’s Day, 2018.
And if they ever tour around your area? Round up the family and friends and go see them. Bands like this come around only once in a generation or two

This is a band created by Miku, the sub-vocalist, with her friends, based on the concept of the gap between cute maid costumes and metal. However, the vocalist and bassist refused to wear the clothes, resulting in the current attire. We get along well with each other, and I like the fun atmosphere we have at live performances.

Yes, Shambles is the Akane show with special guest stars Kanami, MISA, Saiki and Miku. But wait! Was it really the Kanami show, because she wrote the song and played it with such forcefulness and exquisite abandon. Or was it the MISA show because without MISA, the rapturous drive of the song would be a ride on four flat tires. Or was it the Saiki show because she focused the sonic chaos into a song with melodies that could express Miku's lyrics like no other singer could. Without Saiki, Shambles might sound like a familiar instrumental. Or was it the Miku show because, damn, she wrote the lyrics, played the important rhythm parts, and added her unique brand of backup vocals that have become a defining "sixth instrument" of Band-Maid.
So exactly whose show was it? It was the Maid's show, as usual! 🤘🎀🤘 Thx, Ladies!

    why some words sound english
    To attract foreign listeners
Even western countries use foreign languages as part of the lyrics to help them reach more audiences. Since English is a “global language,” English words are most likely to appear in the lyrics. The inclusion of the English language helps Japanese songs reach across a further distance.
