+James M. Growing up in Portland as a Blazers fan, I completely empathize with you. Nonetheless, we must lament that Kobe is forever enshrined as a permanent basketball legend.
On the other hand, WE (meaning us Blazers here in Portland) MISSED an opportunity to recruit MJ (Bulls had the third pick, we had the second). That mark we have to live with.

In regards to the PTB making that historic mistake, it always boggles my mind when I think how just a few people who were placed in a power position can decide, for good or for worse, the future of a franchise, and consecutively, the emotional roller coaster of its fans, for many years to come.
We (I mean the Sixers) have also made some huge mistakes, not MJ-scale but still... For instance in 2010 we drafted Evan Turner over DaMarcus Cousins and Paul George!!

The fact that Kobe did all this scoring and still ended up being 1st team all defensive is really impressive.

My only contribution is, where is the defense? The worse team of the 80's or 90's would have made him work so hard he would have barely gotten to 40 (just to show I am not hating). Kobe is great, I will admit, but he spent most of his career in a poor defensive era..I am out.

You take for granted that legends like Kobe Bryant are going to be around forever. I heard about the 81 point game, back then, and my jaw dropped. I am a Bulls fan, first, but I fail to give any superlatives to speak about how great of a performance this was. I will truly miss Kobe Bryant. It will be a long time, before someone reaches the 80 point threshold. This was a once in a lifetime performance. What a treat this was to watch!

I was in college during this game and in my Honors English creative writing class we were given an assignment to write a paper on art. On something that had to do with artistic "parameters." It was a 6pm to 9 pm class. I left on first break this night around 7pm and wondered what to write about. Born and raised in L.A. I got home and the game was on. So I said, you know what? Kobe Bryant's an artist. Talented. Creative in his craft. Let me watch this game like any other, and research his life while I write...The universe gave me exactly what I needed before I even knew he'd hit 81..

Just rewatched this on NBA TV and had forgot that he got hit in the face near the beginning of the 4th quarter. No foul was called and he was on the ground in pain. He got up, had some words for the ref that he got T'd up for, and went on to score 20 more points. I think he used stuff like that to motivate him.
