Although Maradona's era's defenders were tough, today's defenders are much better, both tactically and physiologically. The medical tech and staff have improved dramatically for the players, including defenders, to maintain increased intensity. For example, look at Man City today or even a Real Madrid in 2016-both teams can smack England '86's side, who barely attempted to tackle and looked defensively disorganized against Maradona and Argentina. Although Maradona was brilliant, today's game with its high intensity would not allow him to just jog past defenders with feints-today's players would at least make it more difficult than England's lazy-to-tackle defenders.
As a result, today's game of high pressing with high intensity to drop back and defend illustrates its tactical mastery, which has just crippled tiki-taka, once known as arguably the best form a football (highlight by Barcelona's 2009-'15 dominance), among other famous tactics. For example, look at Bayern 8-2 Barca or Chelsea 3-2 Barcelona (agg.). And now, it's slowly crippling down Mourinho and Simone's compact, high defensive lines.
Top sides of today's game (Italy, Bayern, Man City, and Spain) would run a mockery of England '86. Although West Germany's intelligent tactics would pose a challenge to today's sides, West Germany can not keep up with the high intensity induced by today's game.

Not that Neymar or Ronaldinho ever did hard drugs but Maradona's mentality was weak like theirs. in other words if you are a great talented player like maradona or Pele you can do the individual work much easily than today's era
because the defensive tactics are much stronger and you have to be a talented player and a tactical one which means you'll need Good support from your teammates
you can't just break through defensive lines as easy as maradona's era you'll need your teammates and a high level of offensive tactics so that you'll break the defensive tactics...
so when messi does the individual work on this era it is much harder than maradona or Pele

Maradona top 3 soccer players of all time for me. I’m 29 now and the more I study this beautiful game and it’s players the more I realize this man was built perfectly and played futbol perfectly. Everything about his style was just pure raw talent and fortitude. His body was even built in my eyes perfectly for an all around player. His height, and body weight distribution served him well for explosiveness, speed, and changing direction. Most of his weight was in his powerful legs but his core was also incredibly strong. People like to say that cristiano Ronaldo is probably the most athletic soccer player that has ever lived but I think Maradona is right up there with him. Maybe his longevity was not as impressive but at his peak I believe Maradona was the best of the best

Created or Scored 10 of Argentina’s 15 Goals in this tournament (Was involved in the build up of 2 others).
He had similar moments of genius. The assist against Netherlands was the best reverse pass I’ve ever seen. The run and assist against Croatia was special. The Goal against Mexico was huge as well.
Imo, Maradona’s performance in 1086 was slightly superior given that he was 26 & in his prime. Messi did this at 35 and this performance will also stand the test of time.

No other player has ever or will ever own an entire World Cup, practically solo, so hard again.
I didn't understand why people remember him as GOAT, cause his lacks superior club career. But this video showed everything.
Club career opportunities in Maradona times and Messi times does not mean the same. Rules were different. How many players from other countries could have Maradona when he played for Barcelona? 2? In Napoli - 3? How about yellow cards and red cards? Currently players are actors, look at Neymar, he's great player, ok, but when you just touch him you can get a yellow or red. Same about offsides - different rules. However Maradona won Uefa Cup with Napoli in 1988 which is totally different when you compare it with current Uefa League. Napoli had to beat Juventus and Bayern Munich to win this trophy. Compare Messi teammates like Ronaldinho, Xavi, Iniesta, Suarez and Neymar, and Cristiano Ronaldo teammates like Modric, Bale, Kroos, Oezil, Di Maria, Higuain, Marcelo, to Maradona teammates like Careca, Alemao and... ? No one else. Maradona had to work very hard to win anything, Messi & CR are great, but they have great team mates which makes everything easy. That's why Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo statistics are better than Maradona statistics, but there is no any comparisation to be honest. All the best! I look at it in a different way, it is unfair to a great player if he doesnt play in a great team. These days i would say Messi is the best dribbler definitely, not as varied as Ronaldo but on another planet. But if i had a big game like European Champions league final, or big world cup game, i would have Ronaldo in my team. Messi disappeared against Liverpool in the second game, Ronaldo would have got the goal. Ruggeri was great but was him and maybe one more GOOD players then mostly were average. Not really a championship favourite if it wasn't thanks him. Julian Orozco 1 good tournament doesn’t make a player the best. Platini was seen as better than Maradona leading up to the WC. Pele had several great WC’s. Messi and C.Ronaldo have dominated club football to a level that Maradona could only dream of and done it consistently for over 10 years. Maradona is easily top 10 ever but its debatable who is the best amongst that 10.

The problem for Messi... Higuain , Aguero and Di Maria direct contribution on the goal were minimum in 2014. In comparison, Burruchaga made 2 goals + 2 assists, Valdano scored 4 goals.

Go to see the match vs Belgium when the English commentator blamed Valdano for missing the clear chance created by Maradona.
