A comfortable seat is SO important. I have a Hobie PA with the Vantage Seat, which IS comfortable, but even so, my butt was tired. I added a Kayak Kushion and that has made a huge difference! Kayak Kushion now also offers the KUSH-BAR: Lumbar Kushion. Haven't tried it but their products are top notch!
I use about a 3/4” foam seat from a deer stand seat,or a Coleman stadium seat in both sit in or sit on top kayak. But the foam is better and that little bit makes getting out of the seat easier.
I haven’t commented on one of your videos in a while, but I know of something that I really like to use that others may be interested in too. It isn’t technically a seat, but since you mentioned the lumbar support, I think this is fair game too 😂 I use those self inflating seat cushions under my rear end on top of my kayak seat. For anyone who isn’t familiar with those, they are seat cushions that have a very porous foam in them and a valve to let air in or out. They are convenient to use because you don’t have to blow them up. When you open the air valve the foam expands and draws in air and then you close the valve so the air can’t get out and to deflate it you open the valve and roll it up which compresses the foam and forces the air out and then you close the valve so it air can’t get back in. An air cushion is much better than a gel pad or closed cell foam cushion to me because you have a lot of control over how firm the cushion is. If you need more firm support you can let it inflate completely. If you need less, just let it partially inflate before closing the air valve. On a long outing, it is nice to be able to change the firmness occasionally to give you a different feel for a while. Kind of like changing shoes after you have been standing for hours can make your feet feel better just because it doesn’t keep you on exactly the same pressure points. I don’t know if you have ever tried them, but I really like them!
Good idea about lumbar support. As soon as I saw your lumbar support, what came to my mind is a fanny pack stuffed with foam. I have a variety at home to choose from. Come to think about it, you could also run a webbing strap thru a thick pool noodle.
My teenage grandson had (sold it) a Pelican Apex 100 (sit on top) kayak, and it had one of those thin foam seat pads (w/back) that sat on the plastic of the hull. I bought him a YakGear seat pad to add a bit of comfort for him. I couldn't sit in that low position as it caused leg pain. My FeelFree Lure 11.5 has their brand-specific "gravity" seat, and is adjustable in increments to 10" height above the deck if desired. I always set it at about 4"-6". Made a world of difference for sitting long periods of time.
Feelfree Lure has probably the best (very comfortable 7+ hours sitting) factory seat you can find on a kayak. The Lure is built like a "plastic" tank and also weigh as much as one. These are the trade offs one makes for comfort. I own several kayaks with all the seat styles you showed and probably use the "lawn chair" style the most (due to the boat being much lighter and easier to move around than the Lure), but after 3 or 4 hours I'm ready to stand for a while.
Sorry to interrupt again, but the Perception FISHING kayak seat does not sit on the bottom of the boat. It sits above the hull by several inches, specifically designed to keep the angler dry. (Note, I rarely get water in the boat, except from a fat flapping trout.) But, I do agree with you, the seat is thin bottomed, so I added a waterproof purple gel pad to sit on for those all-day trout paddles. And I find my lifejacket provides enough back support agains the existing seat back. Still, things can always be improved, so I’ll keep watching your channel for other suggestions! Thanks for the videos!
Couple years ago I bought my first kayak did not know much about them. It is a Field and stream Shadow caster I want to get an aftermarket seat if they have them for this kayak. If you can help me where can I look online for this particular kayak I would appreciate your help thank
I was unfamiliar with that kayak, so I looked at a picture. I see the issue with the low back. The problem with a raised seat for a particular kayak is that there is no aftermarket option. I looked around on Amazon and UA-cam and have yet to see any options.
Here is the link to the after market seat I showed: amzn.to/3wduFiW

Gotta be able to open those pickle jars - or whatever else the boss wants 😂🤣😂
My preference is the lawnchair-on-a-boat variety 😎

Excellent points! Yes, I use one right now. They are great

What a great idea! I think there is another video in the making!
I like the lumbar pillow suggestion. I am going to try that.
It works!
Love the seats on my old town sportsman mk106 - can sit all day comfortably
Nice video
Good information for everyone
Thanks

Especially for us old folks!

Great vid on seats. I use a lumbar foam cushion from Walmart. Covers the whole back of my old town ap120
Sounds great!
Ah yes, the “bottom line” matters a lot. Got to be ready to open those pickle jars! Good work with an important topic.
Absolutely!

Thanks for the tip on the Feelfree - I hope folks try one during the Spring demo days.
