I just wanted to get on here and thank you for your service in the military. I love watching your videos and your stories about when served. Thank you. God bless you.
Hi Me Ancient. I definitely agree, to unbox the MRE on camera, so we can see what it consist of. I really enjoy your stories about your tour in the Marines, and especially liked the box of memorabilia from your duty. I believe that the piece of pork in the bean soup, was fatback, which is really flavorful. It sure looked like it to me. Are you supposed to eat the squid/ink cold or hot? I wonder how it would have tasted warmed up a bit? Great video, I always look forward to the next one. God bless, keep up the great work.
no thank you on the squid 😂 love when you add the little history tibit in the videos. always nice to learn what the solders did when in the service. thank you for you're service sir!

The bean stew dish is a stew from the northern parts of spain called "caldo gallego" ('galician broth'). It's a very hearty dish and real basic stick-to-your-ribs food. Traditionally it's made with spanish chorizo (the chewy sausage), ham hock or large chunks of bacon, and morcilla (blood sausage -- the darker stuff), as well as beans and some greens (a leafy green called 'versa' -- very similar to mustard or collard greens) as well as obviously broad white beans. The commentors calling it other stuff are incorrect -- 'frijoles charros' is a mexican dish (broadly similar -- beans and meat, cooked until the beans are very soft) and 'carne en su jugo' is also a mexican dish ("meat in it's juices") that also has beans in it. If you have a grocery with canned latin foods, you may find canned versions by Goya or Kirby, usually called white bean soup or galician style soup. The squid in ink is also sold in canned fish aisles, but I don't know if you'd have it local (it's available in Miami, but that's hardly surprising....)
Me Ancient everything looked good and I love hearing your stories!!! You were in in 1984 wellllll I was born in 1980 so I’m thankful that you were there defending our Country and keeping us safe thank you so much for your service!!! and great video pops!!!!

The English word “salary” comes from the Latin salarium (of salt, salt), in reference to the salary of the first Roman soldiers, who were paid with small leather bags filled with salt, which at that time was difficult to obtain. therefore very valuable. hence the word "salary". which in Spanish means payment for a job. Greetings from Chile. subscribed! 👍
Fantastic video as always gentlemen, I hope you both had a fantastic Father's Day. If that's Membrillo that' doesn't sound like a mixed fruit spread. That's the Spanish name for Quince, so it's probably Quince Paste.
Great video. Love salt. And I love my Southern cooking! I'm from Charlotte, where are you guys from? Thanks for the reviews and Happy belated Father's Day!
That sweet paste was Membrillo, it's fruit is similar to a small apple and quite sweet I guess the closest relative would be guava which I personally prefer as it doesn't have that grainy texture.
In Europe we tend to put less salt in food than over in the US. I think our pallets are just different because we grew up with less salt intake. So for us it might be just enough and for people from the US it could take a bit more. Super fun video Me Ancient! It was also super interesting to hear about the mag being taped together with other ones. I have never heard of that!
Salt used to be a very expensive and luxury product, so much that people got payed in salt. Salary, as in what they pay you for your work, comes from salt, which in Spanish is sal and salario (salary)
I don’t know about the MRE version, but in general I love squid in ink. I buy an organic canned squid at an international market a few miles from my town. I also buy whole squid in a jar on Amazon , it isn’t in ink but I like them also. I love pan frying them and eating them in rice or breading them and deep frying them.
i think the Jam is a fruit paste made from Quince fruit if I'm not mistaken. sorry if it's a repeat answer. keep up the great work love you and your son's channels!

Maybe mix some of that soup juice in the beans? It seemed salty .. I guess the guys and gals out on the battlefield probably got pretty creative m.. your way more Brave than I to eat squid and ink .. my brain would have been like OHHH FISH BATE! 😆
Someone should have warned you, the drink mix is not intended to be consumed specifically with the meal. Soldiers are supposed to keep the packets and add one (or maybe two, depending on canteen size) to the water every time they refill their canteen. Think of it like a modern version of old salt tablets, already smashed and ready to mix. About the cans, spanish soldiers often joke about rations being "armored" to resist enemy action. Actually they are much toughter than other MREs and easily accesible with silverware. Not like US MREs bags. I've seed US soldiers opening the bags with a knife and licking the insides, because some meals really stick to the inner surface. Also spanish army found heating of this MREs to be problematic in extreme cold conditions. Soldiers often preferred to cook inside tents or vehicles in those conditions, but fuel tabs emit toxic fumes and need ventilation. It is said the open flame can trigger fire detectors or extinguishers from APCs too. They are trying to develop a chemical based heating system similar to american one. Solid fuel has some advantages and is a bit more versatile, but. . . About crackers, spanish people is not very fond of them. They prefer normal bread, the kind you'd use in a submarine sandwich. Army actually ran a program to develop a shelf-stable bread to their like, but it didn't work too well. About the meal itself, there's a "correct" order to consume it. First you prepare instant soup. Soldiers often complain pasta one is not so "instant" and needs some time to hydrate. While it is being heated and/or hydrated, you consume fish preserve. Then you put the main to the stove to heat while having the soup. This particular dessert is called "membrillo". This is quince fruit and it is not edible raw, it can only be consumed as a jam. It is typical in old style membrillo to encounter some hard bits from seeds inside, so don't chew on it !! Old people often have it with cheese and bread. Young ones dont really apreciate it that much. But, you know, spanish MREs are made of traditional food with long history in our country.
Pavel, thank you so much for the information. I really appreciate that because it will help me make the next Spanish MRE review that much better. I'll use some of this info on the next video, for sure. TFW!
i used the tabs before. you can hold it and light the corner and lay it in the stove and you can scrub it or break apart a little of it and will light better. also can pick it up while lit by hand and close the hand fast will go out to use it again sir take care
I completely agree, as a doctor, that the negative hype about salt is really just a leftover fad from the 70s and 80s. Salt is essentially in our bodies especially in nerve functioning throughout the body. All cellular processes require salt. Salt and olive oil from biblical times have proven to be very healthy, despite both being maligned in error. Great point! Kudos to you
I wonder how Polish hardtacks (crackers) would do the job. Although they are quite hard, they tastes really good, and I ate them with Lisner herring salad, and they tasted great.

That squid can can be bought here too at groceries stores ..ain't horrible. Nowadays most of the mre products are pretty much re labeled " civilians " stuff
My family here in North Florida used to be heavily into offshore fishing. The bad thing about the introduction of the fish cleaning machinery is it puts a lot of poor people out of their jobs. Unemployment skyrocketed. I like fried calamari, but have not yet tried this type of canned squid. An E6 in my shop during my last year in the Navy always had smoked octopus tentacles in his shirt pocket to snack on. Like a weird jerky. He got the habit in his earlier Navy years in the Philipines.
When you made the comment about salt I couldn't help thinking about how I just drank a quarter of a jar of dill pickle brine or "juice" as we call it in Missouri. I was craving it after I got back in from working in the garden.

He laughed when I told him. He just doesn't appreciate good food when it's all around him. Either that or he's just not hungry enough. TFW, as always and tell all the A's "Hi" from MeAncient.
Love the un boxing on camera. As far as the salt... Yes moderation is important. But a lot of salt and sugar are added to processed and canned foods so I tend to be careful of those.
Shimon, thank you for the comment on the un boxing. That seems to be the consensus. TFW!
That squid can can be bought here too at groceries stores ..ain't horrible.
Nowadays most of the mre products are pretty much re labeled " civilians " stuff
el tenda, I believe you are right about that. TFW, as always!
Lance, we're heading to North Florida pretty soon. Maybe we'll see you out somewhere......TFW!
