Thank you great info l adopted 2 older males. Of course it's taking more time & patients to tame them but there is no hurry. Their cage is always open all day so they have lots of freedom am working on play areas out side of cage will look forward to seeing more of your wonderful videos L

Make sure you buy a big enough cage for two budgies with perches and toys that are safe, not some small piece of crap cage either like some people have...🤦♂️ Do some research, and give your budgies a healthy diet from time to time, not just fatty seeds. Good luck!!

These budgies have somewhat semi tame, because new budgies straight from the pet shop or from an aviary are very frightened n would not be happy to sit in your hand in just 3 hours. It does take time n patience though.

It should be noted that some of the approaches here will not work with adult birds. Like pushing the chest, as it forces the interaction which an adult bird will not tolerate and probably flee or bite you. And it will put you further away from getting a tame budgie. Second, it simply is bullying. Don't bully your budgies into doing what you want. Trick them into thinking that they want to do, what you want them to do.
And in the end remember that every single bird is different and you need to treat every one in another way to be successful.
True.. I mentioned that already.. Adult birds are very difficult to tame..
@@TweeTy_and_Blue but it is still possible, but you cannot explain it in a single video. I am actually planning to make a series about taming and training adult budgies, but in german, as there are almost no good sources on that topic here in germany.

I think If you're quiet enough then it is possible. Because they can get scared even from you taking breath and stressed enough to not receive treats you offered
I have a very young budgie for 3 months now. She is so young that today after 3 months I can tell she is a female. I have tried to feed her millet and she will eat from me inside her cage. I can also take her out because she knows how to step up but shes very very scared. If I do anything near her cage she will fly around scared. If I take her out she gets scared too. She never bites me which is good. I bought another friend that is a male. He is a bit older but still young. Hes just settling in from the pet store now. I don't want to traumatize him. I will try training tomorrow with both and use the methods in this video. I hope it works
Don't keep them on the same cage otherwise they will bond with each other and not bond with you. Separate cage is good till they both bond with you individually.

I adopted 6 budgies in October 2022 I take them to a separate room 2 at a time to try to train them and all they want to do is fly around the room I have a hard time getting them to take any millet from my hand they are between 2 yrs old and 6 yrs old what can I do differently to train them.
Take one at a time.. Don't provide any kind of seeds inside the cage. Only provide soft food and pellets. Use millets and other seeds as treat and only offer seeds on hand not bowls. Hope that helps sorry about the late reply, I was busy..
Note: adult birds are adamant and difficult to tame or train.. So these may be a longer process.
But I have seen people taming adult birds with patience.
Please avoid seeds inside cage or in bowl, they need to learn that millets/seeds are only available from your hand and it is safe to eat from your hand.
I’ve had my birds for months and they are comfortable eating out of my hand but if I try to get them to stay on my finger without treats, they always fly away idk what to do bc I’ve searched every single video 😭 nothing works
I got a bird a few months ago and it took him a while to get comfortable going on my hand. And if you have more than 1 untamed birds, I heard it might take a little longer to fully tame them because they distract each other.

Keep trying, be very patient. Give them treats when they do something well. 🐦💕
here is what you need to do / understand: When you use food to get your birds to your hand, it is called luring. It teaches your birds, that they can risk going to your hand to grab the food, and then get away. To get them to stay therte you need to break this circe. First introduce a bridge to your training. This can be a clicker that is used in dog training, but also a word, but it should not be a word, that your birds here all the day - (so "good bird" is a bad choice as you probably use that all the time) and it needs to be short. You could use the word "bridge".
Then train the meaning of this word to your birds - just say bridge and give them food. Repeat that 10 times or so, until when you say bridge you notice them looking around for the food, that they expect to come.
2nd step is to target train them. You can use a chop stick. Bring the stick close to them, and if they get curious and touch it with their beak, you click or "bridge" and give them food. Once they reliably touch the chopstick, start to use that stick to lure them around. Go in small approximations. first so that they need to lean to touch it, then until they need to walk some steps to touch it etc... And everytime they touch it, bridge and give them their favorite treat. Once they do that reliable, use the stick to get them close to your hand or finger, hold the stick, so that they need to touch your hand to get to it, and finally until they need to step on your hand.
By doing it this way, they learn what you want and they start to realize, that if they do what you ask, they will receive food. this will build your trust.
If you can get them onto your hand with the stick, slowly remove the stick from the equation by bridging and rewarding the moment they touch / step on you before they get to the stick. repeat that until they realize, that holding your hand before them is the command to step up.
Then extend the time between them stepping onto you and you bridging and rewarding them. First to 1 second, then to two seconds and so on.
Then once they stay on you for 10 seconds or more start to watch their body language while they are on your hand. If they relax, like preening, fluff up or something like that, you bridge that and reward only that, so that in their heads staying on your hand while being calm and relaxed gets combined into one behavior. then you will have budgies that love to chill on your hand and you will get trouble actually removing them from there.
@@green7woodtriangle883 multiple birds 100% makes it harder. I got a second budgie about a week after my first. I work a lot, and I felt bad for only having roughly 3 hours in the evening to spend with him. Carla or Happy (yes, they are named after the exceeds in fairy tail) would make noise or do something, and the other would blame me. One would start screaming and the one trying to interact with me would go to the other. It’s honestly a pain.
Here I am like 6 months out, and they trust me enough to eat out of my hand, step up if they’re in the floor and want back up, or to bridge over to my conure’s cage, but that’s about it. Tbh, I think adding a larger bird that constantly wanted to be on me, and tried to play with them without realizing how aggressive he was coming across also terrified them, and likely caused some trust issues.
I’ve had my conure for a month less than them, and he bonded with me in about 2 weeks. He’s a nippy little cuddle bug now.
Tbh, I would not recommend budgies to someone who’s new to birds. Budgies are just too finicky. They’re really easy to spook, and they’re not very forgiving. Conures are a bad choice if you have small kids (bitey little buggers, but I love them). Conures are super loving, energetic goofballs, and they’re much more forgiving and less likely to be spooked, but I cannot recommend them as starters just bc of how nippy they are.
If anyone reading this is looking at getting their first bird, I’d recommend a cockatiel, so long as you have several hours to spend with them each day. They seem to bond pretty easy, have big personalities, love spending time with their owners, and enjoy singing and dancing. They’re the perfect balance between budgies and conures, and their price point is also in the middle.

Mostly male speaks a lot compared to females. To make them talk give them time, talk to them softly. They often pick up the words they hear the most.
I wish I would have been able to seen this video before I got my baby, I read places to keep him in a cage the first few days not to disturb him and let him get comfortable. But as of right now he stays in his cage and when I try to approach he gets twitchy and moves as I get closer. I’m trying to be patient and let him adjust but what is the best way to get him adjusted and liking me enough to want to be around me.

hello Twee Ty and Blue (Exotic birds) i have a question i got 2 budgies they are both adults one female and another male they are comfortable with my hand they let me touch them they eat from my hand but they wouldn't perch on my hand what do i do
Adult birds are hard to train..
It will be long process and would need patience.
What foods do you provide them?

You are doing it completely wrong.
Millets are snacks for birds. They cannot be the main food.
Coriander leaves, fresh fruits, corns and other soft food and pellets should be main diet.
Seed should be provided as treats to train your birds.
Seeds as main diet will cause health issues on your birds.
Use seeds to make them come to you. Don't keep seeds inside the cage 24X7.
That way you can tame them but you'll have to be patient as changing their food habits will take time.
Keep a check that they eat the fruits or else you should give some seeds to keep them fed.

I wish I've watched videos before I got my 2 parakeets. I've had them for over a year now. They are both still afraid. They fly away when changing food and water. The will not come to me nor eat from my hand. What else can try?
TBH I've never tried to tame an older Bird. I do mention in my videos, that I either get a hand reared older bird or a baby bird to tame myself.
Once a bird is old and bonded to another bird getting them bonded to human is difficult.
It may take upto 6 months and will need a lot of patience.
The best way to start with is stop giving seeds as regular foods. Give the fresh fruits, vegetables as regular food.
Use the seeds as a treat and only offer seeds in your hand. They won't be able to resist the temptation and hopefully will trust and eat from your hand. Depending on how much time you give them the taming process may vary. Also talk to them softly while offering seeds and be calm and make slow movements.

Don't pay attention when she bites. Treat her when she doesn't bite so that she understands that she gets ignored when she bites and treats when she doesn't..

So i have a female budgie she is 2 month aged . So she step on my hand and also eat in my hand but when i try to scratch her head immediately she bite she don’t let me touch her any suggestions you can offer to me . Also she come to me by her self but she seem afraid i don’t know why
Every Bird is different. They havr their own personalities just like us human. So not every tamed bird will let you scratch their head. Even Jr. Tweety, you see in the video, he also doesn't like head scratch.
But you can try with gentle approach, when she is eating from your hand try to give her a head scratch.

Repeat the process I shared on DM, unless they are no longer scared of your hands or fingers. As I said it is a job of patience.
