I think the bad fashion can also be explained another way: the show must have been filmed before the pandemic, in 2019, and I feel like the y2k and e-girl aesthetics really came around in 2020. But they definitely could have done better and be more creative
@@laullw6002 actually the e-girl look isn’t new. Yeah it came back on trend in 2020, but a true costume designer would have the knowledge to look at the source material their project was based on an at least try to replicate some elements of it. Whoever was in charge of wardrobe really phoned it in. Honestly it seems like this whole venture was phoned in. It’s like no one cares about quality anymore.

I mean... a show can be shinny or having cheerful outfits and still being a serious plot. Madoka Mágica or Mahō Shōjo Ikkusei Keikaku did it.

Nah. Netflix genuinely thinks seriousness is only determined by the amount of sexual tension and "edgy" teens. Seriously though, not everything has to be dark and serious. I think they should have gone in a similar direction to Julie and The Phantoms - it's fun and manages to balance sadder themes with passion and friendship and yet they didn't make it too childish and silly. We didn't watch Winx for edginess and dark themes so why tf would they give us that in a live action *sigh*

They could do something like Scream Queens! It had murder and mistery and still all the main characters (not just the chanels but also grace, zayday, munch, etc) dressed BEAUTIFULL. Everyone had their own representative aesthetic and still there was a serious plot

They also could have easily made stormy from the trix black. Yet they made her a even paler white than she originally was. This is upsetting as I always thought she would look and fit better being black. Imo at least.
Also they changed the Latina/hispanic girl for a white girl. They could have had a latin plus-sized girl as Flora, instead of having to change her mame yo Terra because of the backlash. Whitewashing was hard in this fiasco

They changed it, and Made a point to mention un the show she wasn't Flora, just her cousin. Flora's cousin would not be white anyway, though.... At least not totally white.

I’m so mad at Netflix for that mess because a Winx Club adaptation was really an opportunity for them to have an Euphoria-esque moment in terms of styling and makeup. They really stopped their own bag
It reminds me so much of the craft legacy mixed with riverdale style wise and I just will never forgive them for that

At that point i just wish than Euphoria producer was in charge of the adaptation, i used to enjoy Winx Club because this was the most stylish and well draw western cartoon than i have ever see. This have introduce the fashion trend of belly to little girls which not any girl cartoon have done before, and the Trix used to have the most gorgeous makeup ever. Another good children cartoon who got ruined by Nutflix, i hope than they will do bankrupt one day.

It was so disappointing that they made Stella so bitchy and jealous when it was unnecessary. Like, even for the storyline they created for her, it wasn’t necessary for her personality to be presented that way.
It was really disappointing how they made Stella's character mean and problematic when she was so generous and kind to all her friends and put others before herself a lot.

Every girl in the show had a main color and then a secondary color. For bloom, blue was her main color and pink was her secondary. We only saw her in red once in the show and that was in season 3 when her and Stella were trying on dresses. She’s already a red head so why make her main color red?

I think what hunted me the most is about the musa situation, because she wasn't only a character that was asian and that's it, no she had a whole backstory with her native country that was asian inspired and stuff, and they just threw all of that away

Well they're aliens, but yes, her world was supposed to be representing asian culture. She had the saddest backstory ever, and she was greatly affected by it too. Besides she really represents her songs well and she's definitely worth the title of a music fairy, or whatever it's called in english lol, she's got the best tricking songs ever, she's such a interesting characteeeeerr and so sad too. Yeah yeah, there's also bloom with the trauma and blah blah, but I feel like even though her situation was ""worse"" she didn't seem to care until the plot required it, while Musa just suffered in every season. Actually wtf, we see this girl cry every season all of them, find a season where Musa isn't crying.
In short: Musa is the best.

my biggest problem with Flora is she dresses like and acts like someone's mom, and in the first episode gave a "I'm a big girl and I don't fuck around" speech and its like winx was speed running "I'm weird, I'm a wierdo"

Also regarding the plus size part, can we normalise dressing plus size girls in cute clothes... like girl they put a trench coat on the poor girl and called it a day.
And they dressed her in all black which is well known as the colour fat people are "meant" to wear to look "less fat". Plus, no one can argue that styling her in black makes sense cus they did colour coordination with the girls who have powers associated with colours. They put Bloom in red cus FIRE RED and Aisha/Layla in blue cus WATER BLUE, even Stella has a orange top under her blazer thing cus SUN. So why is Terra (the character replacing Flora) not wearing greens and/or browns since she has the power of nature🤔 My guess is the stylists weren't sure what to do with a plus sized actress.

IKR, that was so depressing. I hate the other girls outfits, but they had dresses, fancy shirts, and matching colors. She literally had nothing going with that outfit, there was no thought put into, but honestly almost all their outfits had no thought put into it though, let’s be honest.

Honestly I think the sonic was a publicity stunt. I think they knew nobody would care about a sonic movie so they made a bad sonic to show the public just to create outrage and free publicity and then they used the actual Sonic they had all along to make it seem like the audience had actual input. It was pretty genius.

It didn't even have to be made dark at all, the story Itself has a lot of drama in the first 3 seasons with Bloom trying to find out who she is and where from etc.. literally all Netflix had to do was adapt it In a way it can be told cohesively in LA, cast it right and style it properly and dumbos couldn't even do that right 😒

Netflix tries to be “dark” and “edgy” but they always fall flat and it’s so aggravating. Some people have been saying that they had to tone the outfits down a notch so that it'll fit the darker theme, but the thing is, it has nothing to do with that, because there are shows such as Euphoria that have dark themes, but the outfits are still fun and colorful and not 2015 mom outfits....
I disagree on Flora shopping at Urban Outfiters (or even her buying from any sort of fast fashion company) since its not the most environmentally friendly company. Most girls like Flora that I know irl tend to shop at thrift stores and/or small buisnesses and have very strong biases against fast fashion. I think the styles of clothes you chose for her work very well though

PaquesBass definitely thrifting and making her own clothes! I can see her thrift flipping a lot, like buying jeans from a second hand shop, sewing them to flatter her figure and painting flowers on them, like the daisy jeans in this video :) She doesn’t seem like the type to sew from scratch to me, for some reason, unlike Stella.
I like the idea of bloom wearing more 90’s or retro aesthetics. It makes her feel slightly out of place from the rest of the cast, who all grew up with magic. Bloom grew up on earth, and especially early on she feels out of place in the magical world, so i think it would actually be a nice visual indicator for her clothes to be slightly out of style.

Yea the reason for that being keeping colours that resonates with each character and it also makes it easier for younger audiences to understand and identify each character much easier in most children shows you'll see characters stick with certain colors eg

Frozen
Winx club
Glimmer and shine
Glitch tech
Etc
And the reason it throws most people off is because they always see them ith it which isn't a big vibe
And in win club saga 5hey removed the colours and almost all of them are white and it makes it difficult to profile them I don't know if it's just me.
But it personally throws me off especially as their hair color has changed so the only one which was easily profiled was bloom

Also the art style made characters look very similair to each other. It's good for doll production but limiting for character expression. Color-coding them was nice to express their personality within the limits
I feel like Bloom was like the, "girl next door", but with a deep plotted backstory, because in the show she was a long lost fairy that didn't know about her roots. So I always thought of her as someone wearing a retro style that's been modernized. Like a short sleeved v neck crop top with bell bottoms or an oversized denim jacket and a denim skirt to match with a sleeveless button up underneath or something like that, with tinted glasses and a beanie. Her style was like the "quirky girl" but not in the sense of "I want you to know I'm quirky" and more of "I wear what I want to and don't care what other people think" sense. Like a more modern and less annoying manic pixie dream girl

someone already did this but i guess the “aesthetic” for each girl would be:
flora: cottagecore/soft-girl; flowy dresses, plains mixed with nature patterns. bohemian style kind of but with a bit more flare.
techna: vaporwave/futuristic; bright colours mixed with black. shiny and sleek. straight to the point but still cute. clean cut and not a lot of pattern.
musa: skatergirl/egirl; either oversized graphic streetwear or a more ‘edgy’ feminine style. black pleated mini skirts with leather straps. converse or vans- but they gotta be black!
stella: ‘dressed up’ y2k; bling, in your face, mini skirts. fur and fancy. diamonds and lip gloss. heels and platforms.
aisha: ‘gym style/athleisure’ y2k; neon jumpsuits, cropped sweatshirts, sweatpants, chunky shoes.
bloom: casual 70’s; mini dresses, patterns, kind of disco style. hoop earrings, fun colours, flared jeans.
not sure if i described these right but hopefully it’s at least coherent.

The only thing I'd change about your Musa is the fact that she's wearing many cultural inspired clothes in the cartoon. She's east Asian and her father even looks like an ancient royal so it would have been cool if you'd have covered that.

I loved the winx up until it moved to nick (I was watching the 4kids version thats the version of the show I fell in love with when I was little) they made so many mistakes on Nick with the winx along with killing Nabu and ruining the trix,and I heard that Valtor was revived?! Like????? Bloom saw to it that he was killed because at that time she believed he was the person who made her parents disappear? More so flora than stella. Out of all the girls, stella would be the first girl you’d think of having the y2k style. But flora cottagecore is a reality I need to live in.

There's multiple factors about this, I'll say that it doesn't matter if an actress don't exactly look like a Fictional Character, cause it depends on her acting, aura and credibility.

Stella made the girls cloths prettier multiple times. She was the rich, stylish princess. Her whole character was just about looking summerish, beautiful and stylish. I think the only times she ever wore black, was when they had to disguis themselves for a mission. And in that new show, she is almost all black with a skirt which reaches the floor. Stella was that kind of girl who wanted to look hot. I guess that wouldn't have been fitting for that show, but still, her outfit looks criminal to me.

I am straight up Hispanic I even have some indigenous Cuban background and growing up hating myself because of it. television was my safe place I was bullied in school so I would turn to television shows such as the winx. Flora was my favorite because she looked like me and it gave me confidence seeing someone who looked like me who was so care free, fun, and so kind, it really made me love who I was. Before watching the winx I never really saw myself in other characters, I really liked Disney shows and I never really saw anyone who was Hispanic I bet there were some but I don’t think i ever saw it. But I think this made me want to be whiter I wanted to look like the other kids but when saw flora I felt happy about myself. Netflix needs to pick up the slack. I bet that actress is amazing but she does not fit the qualifications for the role.
There’s definitely a lack of Hispanic/Latino representation in film and that really bothers me too, I feel like Hispanic/Latinos are invisible when it comes to film. I think when people think of diversity it’s like two white people and a black person and if there’s more diversity they put an Asian person in the mix. When I see flora I also see me and Hispanic/latinos never get the chance. It’s like when I was younger and wanted to choose a Disney princess but I couldn’t choose Jasmine or Pocahontas like even though they’re the same color as me, that’s not me. 😅😂

Hispanic people are VERY diverse, Latin America, Central America and the Caribbean have all kinds of people and culture and phrases unique to their spanish, so it's disappointing to not see us being represented more. ESPECIALLY Caribbeans, there are A LOT of Dominicans and Puerto Ricans living in the US, yet they never show us

The characters had no life anymore and were just going along with the storyline. (And then Nabu died, rip poor baby) Then they broke the deal, and once again the show was back in the creator's hands, notice how the characters totally changed attidude from the 4th season. Then time goes by and ofc you gotta adapt everything to what young people want, and here we get... To the 8th season, I didn't watch it and I don't want to.-

To be honest, as a person who was fat up until quarantine started (and yes I used the word fat, I always hated it when people sugarcoated my issues with words like plus sized and bigger, it’s a serious health issue that shouldn’t be sugarcoated), I feel like this is the one show where it wouldn’t make sense for any of the main characters to be obese. Not only are the Winx magical fairies and not humans, but they run/fly around all day fighting monsters and they’re shown to be really athletic. (They do a lot of stunts in the show, dance a lot, etc...) And I also feel like they would eat really healthy, *especially* Flora, who I imagine would be vegetarian. I can see some of them having curvier bodies with a bit of a tummy and stuff but definitely not obese. This isn’t hate to obese people, I’m just saying I personally think it wouldn’t make any sense for these particular characters. Still I’d much rather see a chubby Latina as Flora rather than a white girl.
@@-Theo- Nobody said anything about being "obese" the girl in the show is not skinny by any means but she is nowhere near obese, however a poorly casted role, in my opinion someone with the looks of Barbie Ferreira would suit it much better.
People have different metabolism, different muscles and different body types even when being sporty you can look quite bulcky and on the heavy side, like female and male rugby players. I, for instance, have bigger thighs and exercise, and muscle gain make them look bigger and "fatter" rather than slim and beautiful.
Also, you do realise that just because you're vegetarian doesn't mean you're suddenly skinny and/or fit? You can be vegetarian and eat crappie food still. You also can eat healthy foods and not be skinny, all depends on metabolism, genetics, hormones and many other factors.
I went to a dietician for 3 years and despite all my efforts of controlling my died and other things, I never moved past my minimum weight, or never got my desired slim "tumblr girl body" despite doctors reassuring me "that its very much possible".
Flora is the fairy of nature and nature is full of things to give to earth and other planets in terms of nutrition, that is why out of all the girls in the fandom she seems quite fitting for this body type.
Nobody has mentioned or advocated for any of the girls to be obese, or portrayed in an unhealthy overweight shape. Everyone just wants to see a pretty, curvy girl as a fairy, so that curvy girls can feel represented. Just because you're curvy doesn't mean you're unhealthy or not sexy, or not worthy of a fairy title, you're not less of a human being for being on the heavy side. That's what we all want to say, not some deeper message about "obesity being the best thing in the world". Just trying to make girls who struggle with their weight and appearance feel included, that's all.

with bloom i feel like since she’s from earth (or another realm in the live action) her style would be drastically different from the others, and as the show progresses we see her expressing herself more and more and adapting to the styles and trends of the magic world. maybe we could see her wearing more modest and clothing that isn’t so revealing, unlike the other girls (this highlights how different she is from them in a way without being generic) because she’s been plucked out of a world where she’s comfortable and put in this totally different one, as she finds herself becoming more comfortable and closer with her friends she incorporates a bit of each of their aesthetic in her outfits, making her a bit of a manifestation of all the y2k styles
Her growth as a character being paralleled with a fashion would have been so cool to watch

I think Netflix must have gone way too deep into the “darker more mature” theme that forgot one can have good outfits in a show that’s not necessarily happy and positive all of the time (they also forgot that having your characters be dressed in amazing outfits that fit them is a good way to keep the viewers hooked even if a scene is kinda meh cause you are living for the characters aesthetic)

Problem is that winx club dealt with some heavy things in the original show. Bloom and her planet being genocided, Stella's parents were divorced, Flora was shy and really struggled to overcome that shyness(given that she was the last to earn her Charmix in season 2), Musa was grieving her mother and who her father was before she died, Tecna was such a logical person she struggled to maintain relationsnhips due to her not understanding the base emotional facets of relationships, and Aisha/Layla was a huge tomboy who not only has to deal with trying to be a "princess" but also that her SO DIED.
And this is just one or two things i could recall off the top of my head. Can we talk about the freaky undertones with Valtor and Bloom? How about the witches summoning fucking demon monsters? Darkrai was the literal embodyment of darkness. You could have made an "adult show" based on that alone! It was really watered down in the original animated show, but it was STILL A THING that the girls dealt with!

One of the things that no one says but I think deserves to be said, is that not only do the characters in the live action dress in darker, more muted colors, but their clothes AREN'T EVEN CUTE! Winx is all about being feminine and girly and dressing fashionable (maybe not ALL about, but still), but the characters they show us look like they were dressed by their great grandmothers.

I don't get this weird (and, ironically, incredibly juvenile) obsession with taking nice, sweet animated properties and making them dark and gritty in live action. The writing isn't better. It's just darker.
Great analysis! I didn't agree with most of your choices for Stella, bc in my opinion her style is focused on brighter, warmer colors rather than pastels (if you wanted to tone it down for live action, you could replace the bright oranges she weas in the cartoon w warm browns, that would imho fit her very well) and she isn't as adventurous (both in general amd in her taste of clothes^^) as Techna or Musa, preferring timeless classics with an unusual twist over extreme silhouettes (for example both skirts you showed suit her vety well).
However your other picks are spot on. (And even Stella is way better than in the live action trailer 😅)

Musa was very tomboyish in the beginning but they changed her on later season to match the others style, in season 6 they all dress like a unit using the same patterns ans colors (even tho the season 4 outfit is more a product of them being older in this season they all dress kind of more mature? Except stella she’s a disaster)
Edit #1: the thing with Bloom having sky motif is adorable honestly :0 it’s the name of her boyfriend after all

They totally lost their personality over time, in the first three seasons you could really see each of them as an individual
I really wished the costuming director allowed them to be more fanciful and fun since this is based off a cartoon. I know they were going for a semi-mature, gritty teen thing but the characters ended up looking so mundane and lacked personality. I think Stella is the only one who’s clothes really felt tied to her character while the other 4 dressed in a way that if you swapped their outfits, you wouldn’t even notice if it weren’t for the _slight_ consistency they had with their colors
I love that every girl was different in there own way but they still go together like puzzle pieces
You can really see what happened to the girls in those pictures with their main outfits from all the seasons. When it comes to their style, the first three seasons are superior. The other outfits are cute, but they start looking too similar. Especially Musa, she started as of a tomboy with a hip hop edge and short hair, but a few seasons in she has long hair and is wearing skirts all the time. I loved the season 4 outfit, but it doesn’t look like her. Your style can evolve over time, but In the last season they’re all basically wearing a school uniform. They look the same.

I feel like if netflix hired the right people that understand clothes winx could be the next euphoria. We all saw how the aesthetic and show took off and I think that the show has great potential, but starting off I'm already feeling dissapointed. The only thing they have going for them now is nostalgia.
These outfits are so fun. What I love is that I can imagine baby me, who was watching Winx back in the day just being super in love with those outfits. All the good vibes.
I wished that there would have been more orange and yellow in the clothes you chose for Stella. I know it might make the characters look too color coded but I just liked that in the og show the ''popular pretty girl'' type WASN'T dressed in pink.
