Better Call Saul is the prequel to the award-winning series Breaking Bad, set six years before Saul Goodman (Bob Odenkirk) became Walter White's lawyer. When we meet him, the man who will become Saul Goodman is known as Jimmy McGill, a small-time lawyer searching for his destiny, and, more immediately, hustling to make ends meet. Working alongside, and often against, Jimmy is "fixer" Mike Erhmantraut (Jonathan Banks), a beloved character introduced in Breaking Bad. The series will track Jimmy's transformation into Saul Goodman, the man who puts "criminal" in "criminal lawyer."

Old and lazy
LOL
This scene is absolutely destroys me. Love, human connection, Gus sacrificed everything that makes life worth living in his chase for revenge.
And because he liked being a criminal, just like Walt 😂 and Poor Jesse
@@Memevze He believes him self to be necessary evil. Walt did it to satisfy his own ego. Some of his falling out with Gus came about because he wanted Gus to see him as an equal. Gus built an empire hidden in plain sight. Walt built an empire of ruin.
This is how “revenge bad” trope done right, not that Last of Us 2 crap.
Yea at the end I think all he wanted was to revenge
@@WithoutRemorse12 He might believe that. But I am pretty confident that Gus also loves being a criminal and that he enjoys being in that world with that kind of power and all. You can see that when Gus threatens Walts family - I will kill your infant daughter! Gus also had no issues with using children to sell his product. And it is very likely that Gus was at some point involved in some kind of war crimes or the military in his home country. So yeah. He enjoys being a criminal.
Gus cannot allow himself to build bonds and have faith in people because of what happened to Max. As soon as he realizes that he's about to do that, he leaves.
It is a liability and weakness in his line of work. One he does not wish to give himself. Had he not been at odds with walter he might have allowed himself to form bonds with some people after he dealt with the cartel but he never had the chance.
He's just incapable. He's a sociopath.

Right after he killed the Cartel, he should've gone back to that wine bar and got on with his personal life.
Instead he went to go brag about it to Don Hector. Which exposed his weakness. If he could just let go of all of that hate and walk away he could have left and never been seen again.
@@CornBreadtm1 Didn't Gus die within a few months after taking out the cartel? This is clearly way before that timeline wise.

Really neat how the last time we see Gus is when he’s at his most vulnerable. But then he realizes he can’t do it. And we know as an audience he will stay locked in until the end
4:36 A moment of peace ruined by a realization he's too deep in the game and a quest for vengeance.
Damn.
I think the taste of the wine reminded him of Max (the bloodied pool) and therefore the feelings he was developing for the man, which reminded him of (as you said) the quest for vengeance.
@@t.rieper "Your right, You are absolutely right." Stand Edgar
Yes thanks that's what happened good job seeing it
I love how at the start Gus is clearly guarded, there's a long shot of him glancing down at the bottle rather than listening as if anxiously waiting for it to be poured and the conversation over, but gradually he stops glancing and gets enthralled on what's being said. At least for a short while before he catches himself.
Very good observation
Gus saw a stain in his glass and decided that the whole restaurant is not up to Los Pollos' standards.
"Do you like the wine Mr Fring?"
"It is... acceptable."
Somewhere deep down there's a heart to Gus. But he forsake that heart to be the most powerful man in New Mexico and get his revenge.
Despite everything Gus did, I feel bad for the guy. He never really got over Max and won't allow himself any happiness over fear of letting anyone in considering his line of work. Hector did in a way get the last laugh on him.
It's a good reminder that you've got a heart when you let yourself feel for someone who definitely doesn't deserve it. That's not to say that all people actually deserve empathy, but it's more about you than them. It's letting yourself understand why they are the way they are rather than condoning it. That's a mark of a good heart.
Reminds me of quote from the novel Ender's Game that I love:
"In the moment when I truly understand my enemy, understand him well enough to defeat him, then in that very moment I also love him. I think it’s impossible to really understand somebody, what they want, what they believe, and not love them the way they love themselves. And then, in that very moment when I love them.... I destroy them."
@@dave5194 I think lots of people don't love themselves at all, I suppose soldiers to though, or people who "fight" in that sense.

is that a 1978 Côte-Rôtie or are you happy to see me?
The fact that Gus was gay was established in breaking bad. But even if he wasn't romantically interested in this guy the same theme persists. You won't allow himself any recreation or human intercommunication.
I do not think it was established that he was gay. It was established that he cared for Max. Other than that, other than this scene, the biggest implication that Gus might be gay is when Lalo called Max Gus's boyfriend and he was making fun of him there.
@@henrypeters5291 It was outright confirmed that Gus is gay in interviews.
@@henrypeters5291 I mean, Hector calls them "Butt Brothers" several times. Also, yeah, it was confirmed in interviews, but it was implied in Breaking Bad, and heavily implied in Better Call Saul. They just have no reason to outright tell us in the story that he's gay because there's zero reason to.

@@ShortyBoyd Alot in this scene, Gus's entire life now is built around revenge against Hector, its what keeps him fueled in his line of work, and him being so deep in the crime world makes it impossible for him to let anyone in. So much development in a character with less than 5 minutes of screen time.
They last we'll see of Gus Fring ever.
"I can't open it, but the bottle itself is... you'll appreciate this."
It's really sweet to see people get the chance to geek out about their favorite thing in the world to a fellow enjoyer of it even if it's scripted in a TV show
It’s so tragic to see the hopeful gaze in Gus’ eyes fade when he realizes he is unable to form connections outside of his ultimate mission.
It’s interesting. Almost biblical the way Gus is approached by this waiter, reminding him to continue his path for vengeance. there’s mention of an archangel named Sariel, who is set over the spirits that sin and looks upon the bloodshed on Earth. I may be looking at this too deep. I’m tripping, man!
Theological and biblical imagery isn’t uncommon in BCS at all. Saul meets Kevin to argue about settling the Mesa Verde case on Level 8 of the building in “Wexler v. Goodman”. According to Dante’s Inferno, liars are put into the 8th circle of Hell. Saul invokes Christianity several times in his schemes.
Christ is Lord. Remember the law of moses
I don't think you're looking in too deep but ngl I didint understand what you were saying at the end
Care to clarify cuz like
what?
@@CrystallizedBlackSkull lol all good, yeah I didn't clarify that last part too well. When the guy tells the story of the wine and it having a bloody/bloodshed taste to it because it's in the soil/earth. Almost as if Gus is consuming the blood of his enemies. The angel Sariel appears in times of vengeance. kind of ironic too when Nacho shoots himself, because when he shed his own blood as a sacrifice to save his father, a flower grew in the spot he died in.
Awesome that the waiter describes the wine that Gus drinks as meaty and bloody. Gus takes a sip of that wine and remembers sangre por sangre. Blood for blood. Gus gets a glimpse of love, but after tasting blood, he cannot stop until the job is done. Such a tragic character with a 10/10 send off and final scene.
Another sublime scene. I did not grasp this one at all until I read from other people thereafter. Watched it again and it the magic of it hit. Perfect closing scene for Gus.
he's so cute here
This was basically the only hint or clue that Gus was gay. Other than possibly his partner who got murdered at the Salamanca Mansion
honestly it's the only other real relationship we see him have ever
I think the possibility of him not being gay is also open to interpretation..... it's possible for two male friends to platonically connect and feel protective of each others.

Absolutely beautiful scene. We get to see that even though most of Gus is an act, the façade was based on something real. He can love and want genuinely. If only he was able to move on, he could have found true happiness outside of revenge. Tremendously heartbreaking and I'm shocked this scene didn't win any awards.

Peak TV Writing. To choose this scene as a farewell to a man so cold and ruthless as Gus is simply brillant. The first and last time - a glimpse of humanization, of a delicate man, confined in the dark forever. It's so goddamn sad.
Love this scene so much. A perfect coda to one of TV's greatest characters.
I freaking love people like this. Someone so passionate about what he does and has such a chill personality.
The looks he gets that last couple of seconds when he slides the glass outta frame: Heart broken, understanding that this is the sacrifice he has to make to continue to be what he is trying to be. He can never show himself to anyone, never be weak or vulnerable. He can never be happy. He can only ever be Gustavo Fring

Not his death scene, or when he takes out the cartel?? This scene shows a different side of Gus but it's far from the best.
How
Just 2 bros having a very normal conversation about wine
So much going on internally during that last shot. When he slides the glass away it’s almost as if he’s disgusted with himself.
I’ll never get over how many scenes Giancarlo Esposito conveys so much about Gus’s character without saying a single word. From the box cutter, to poisoning the cartel, to him getting his face blown off, and this. What an incredible actor.

I remember watching this scene for the first time and being so confused. And then it hit me like a ton of bricks. I honestly didn't know.
What's so great about this show is how it doesn't characterize the villians as mustache twirling machivilians. It's impossible to not see a part of yourself in any of the characters.

It didn't taste as good when he was alone.
Is Reed Diamond related to Charles Dance? There were several shots in this scene where I thought I was looking at a young Tywin Lannister.
He didn't want what he is to destroy something beautiful.
It’s a shame that this sommelier couldn’t have been Lyle on his other part-time job 💕

There's a real chance Gus saved that dude's life by walking away.
This is the moment Gus become Sus

He is reminded “sangre por sangre”
Once Gus tasted that last sip of "bloody" tasting wine he knew he still had work to do, I almost feel bad for him, it'd be nice if he could just enjoy his life but his desire for revenge is too strong, but to be fair to him very few people could get over what he went through.
It’s funny because I kinda knew Gus was gay before the Hector scene, just like you can tell the waiter is gay…
But I always felt bad Gus couldn’t let down his guard and be happy, this scene is a perfect example of Gus getting close to someone again and having them be ripped away from his side business
Great writing and great actors. Not enough of either these days.

It’s so weird to see him in a social setting 🤣🤣🤣
Wow they look like good friends
This is the moment when Gus almost became El Culo Hermano
Max was Gus’s son this guy reminds him of Gus’s actual father from the homeland
Interesting responses. My take was this guy went through the whole description and it was the same bottle he had been saving for something special. The sommelier took that away from Gus. He can't have that experience of his first taste to commemorate the occasion he had been saving it for.
Never heard anyone call this show woke for implying Gus to be gay. Just shows what genuinely good writing and characters can do
People complain about openly gay characters all the time saying that “It’s shoving gayness down people’s throats” but then whenever someone writes a subtly gay character, people starts saying “What? No, they’re not gay, they’re just really good friends” which leads back to the first point.
there’s no actual logic to their arguments they just don’t want gay people on tv
The real question is : Why are they talking about it? Shut up and soak in the show.
