    Ratskins played a major role in the novel "Kal Jerico; Sinner's Bounty" that came out in 2019 so they are still around in the fluff. I wouldn't be surprised if they got a Newcromunda version at some point. Probably with a bit of a reimagening but that wouldn't be unique to them. Cawdor went from "dudes in hoods" to "human candelabras" and Van Saar changed from "beards and boilersuits" into full on cyberpunk (probably tech-heresy if you ask me).
    Anyway, I'm sticking with retromunda minis. Coincidentally I just started painting a ratskin gang. They've been sneaking around the back of the painting table for a while so I thought it was time to get them done.

    • @ArbitorIan

      Yeah. Agreed. I think we'll get Ratskins, but they won't be as obviously Native American inspired - maybe more of an archaeotech-nomad look or something.

      Sweet to hear you still have them. At the moment I only have an old redemptionist and a squat miner gang. I haven't read the Kal Jerico novel yet. I do remember the Ratskins from the Redeemer graphic novels. Ratskins, Redemptionists, Scavvies and Squat Miner gangs are my favourite retromunda gangs

      @@ArbitorIan i do hope the ratskins come back in some form. agree that the "native americans but in spaaaace" thing was at least very clumsily done if not outright racist (intentionally or not), but the concept of an entire society living apart from "civilised" hive existence, that is habituated to all the weird underhive flora and fauna and maybe with a technopaganic reverence to forgotten machines, is cool.
      ofc, they'd need to reintroduce underhive flora and fauna, too (i've seen some new creatures that can be recruited as "pets" for different gangs, and there are _some_ rules for environmental hazards… but they need to bring back rubber moss, brain leaves, and wire weed!

    Man O War yes please! This game was far and away the most popular amongst my friends and gaming group. Was simple and appealed to everyone, easy to assemble a fleet and didn't need to amass (and paint!) a huge army of models like with Warhammer and 40K.

      yeah when I finally started reading Judge Dredd comics from the 1970's and 1980's it dawned me how much the "look and feel" of the WH40K universe's less glamourous parts (e. g. Necromunda) is lifted from there

      So many pop culture sci-fi tropes and ideas went into 40k. As the years went by newer players didn't pick up on them the same. It's funny how zealot GW are about IP when most of their stuff is ripped right out other franchises. Dune was a big influence on 40k

    Back in the day, Outlanders seemed like a bit of a 'drink from the fire hose' in expanding the world of Necromunda. I don't recall my gaming group using anything but the new gangs back then. I would like to include elements from it if I can convince a few friends to join in a classic Necro' campaign. I've picked up a copy of the hardbound rulebook that contained both the original setting and rulebook and Outlanders in one.

    Our group started out in 2nd edition 40K, but mainly painting and collecting, rarely playing, but hit our stride with Necromunda. We went in deep and played for years solidly. My first Van Saar gang is still running, but punctuated by multiple Spyrer hunts. One mate played Ratskins, another Redemptionists. My brother in law went full cheese with the outlaw rules, hitting a Guilder caravan and intentionally killed everyone, getting his Escher permanently outlawed, where they went from strength to strength. A huge rich gang, the first to retire well north of four and a half thousand points gang rating. Still love to play when we get the chance.

    I'm deeply annoyed at myself that somehow I left my Necromunda box at a friends house & all I have left from it is one whippy stick. For some reason we mostly played it at his, & carting the big box from my house to his was annoying & then at some point we just stopped & I never went to get it back & then we all grew up & it got forgotten about until today.
    Wonderful video series, absolutely overflowing with memories from watching the 3 videos on Necromunda.

    I played in a Necromunda league at my LGS when I was a teenager. Outlanders had JUST come out before the league started. I played a Scavvies gang and it ended up being myself and a Spyre player in the finals. Since we weren't going to need our credits going forward I blew all mine on zombies for the final fight. I think I fielded like 60 zombies? Luckily I played undead in WH Fantasy, so it wasn't an issue finding minis. Anyways, he almost won because all his Spyres had ridiculous saves and it took me wailing on his gang every round with 10s of zombies to break through their armor. Probably the best time I had wargaming as a kid.

    Our campaign had a very cagey Scavvie player that was a terror to play against; they generally got to select the scenario so we'd have the dubious honor/job of being guards in the "escort the Guilder" mission. He'd recruit/toss bait and recruit plague zombies while using the rest of his gang (minimally equipped gangers and scalies with heavy weapons) and usually overrun the defenders; it wasn't clear in the rules but our organizer ruled that if the opposing gang bottled, the winning gang held the field, so could get models off the board to kill guiders and recover loot. One of his scalies named Toto had a 7000 credit bounty, since every time you killed a Guilder your bounty doubled. OP/broken would be a good way to describe that gang.
    Spyers were a popular choice (we had several teams in our campaign) but they lost the majority of their games (no big deal) and we had a several of them killed in a span of a couple weeks; combination of clever deployment and setting counter ambushes and unlucky die rolls dropped them. One team had a pretty scary Yeld that could run, shoot it's lasers (S4 with 2 sustained fire dice) and hide.
    I had a Ratskin gang and ignoring hive quakes and other trecherous conditions was fun, except there were a couple that didn't benefit the Ratskins, "Long Shadows" being a main culprit. I captured a ganger and we took his stuff (the Rescue Mission says the victim is stripped of equipment except for cybernetics, so thanks for the chainsword and bolter), so that went to Fire in His Eyes (a ganger with BS6) but lead to some disagreements because bolt guns weren't on the ratskin equipement list (but were on the outlaw trade table as a basic weapon) so it was OK'd. Best was a brave that was 'chosen' to have the Icrotic (sp?) slime smeared on him, giving him all sorts of bonuses; with just a pair of axes he carved up four opposing gangers in hand to hand (which was really tricky to do in that edition) before their leader set him on fire with a hotshot round from a shotgun. He spent the rest of the game running around while on fire and fell off a couple gantries but with the immune to pinning and increased toughness he laughed at it and ended up getting enough skill points to become a full-fledged ganger and earned his blindsnake pouch (because I only bought the pouches for gangers, not juves). Also had a Brakar figure but someone stole it after a game.
    Better days/times, that's for sure.

    I used to play so much Necromunda in my teen years 2008-2010. I think we had like 10 players. GW had released the rules for free on their website and plastic kits were relatively cheap so most players converted their gangs from them. One guy played scavvies, another played redemptionists and those had problems, since their lists were released but not the other rules from this book, so we had to improvise. Thankfully I found all 3 books for 2€, so we finally could see how it's supposed to go.

    Ratskin gangs were a powerhouse for a simple reason : they would get a +1 on their scounging rolls ( where every ganger rolls a die to scounge, needing 3 creds to feed themselves) . Because of this, the more guys you had in your gang, the more money you would make... which would allow you to get more juves, who made you more money, etc etc. In our campaign my ratskin gang eventually became the fattest in terms of gang rating and bodycount, getting close to 30 guys towards the end.

    • @cjanquart
      @cjanquart 3 роки тому

      I had mine go to 15, because that's all I had the models for :D
      We had a couple oddball things like a brave that would roll doubles on an advance and (of course) I'd pick a techno skill; some you couldn't get because they were restricted to heavies or gangers but I rolled up a weapon reload. So you're thinking "ok, you crafted ammo, that's nice". Nope, my brave somehow played with some broken stuff and managed to make a reload for a lascannon. At half the cost of the weapon with no reduction (since you just made it, not considered loot counters or income) that was a nice 200 credit boon. He also make a one in a million boltgun that was given to my BS6 ganger.
      I forgot how the breakdowns worked as far as income, IIRC there was some sort of diminishing returns but our campaign only ran a few months then we'd play 40k or fantasy before doing another Necromunda campaign.

    I have so many memories with the "outlaw/deputy" mechanic... had a series of games against the same gang ran by a friend and eventually we had a bit of a rivalry going and eventually he decided to report me to the watchmen. I rolled... deputize. And in turn I reported his gang... HE ended up Outlaw. That affected his gang so much he had to disband after 3 more games - after that my gaming group agreed to not use the "reporting" rules

    • @cjanquart
      @cjanquart 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah, some of the rules are fun for laughs but if it causes someone to drop out of the game and you lose a player over it, then your ruling makes sense.
      We had a guy running Redempiionsts that ambush my Goliaths and ended up killing half my gang, including my leader and a heavy; just bad luck on the recovery chart but the guy's M.O. was always selecting Ambush if he was able (he was a dick and got justifiable hate from most of the other players). The organizer told me to restart my gang and I said f-ck it, I'll keep running them until I get wiped. So with two gangers and two juves I building them back up after ten or so games by using uncharistic Goliath street smarts by choosing Hit and Run, Raid and Scavergers...because the scenario table usually favored the player with the lower gang rating. I eventually built my gang back up to a dozen and those four survivors became absolute beasts; a running hipshooting heavy with a flamer and a juve turned champion with a boltgun, BS6 with fast shot and a slew of other skills (but still only LD 7, he was still kinda skittish).

      @orangejosiah 3 роки тому +1

      @@ericmoveon No doubt, pouches were great! The threat of them often changed the way the opponent played, which sometimes was better than the 4+ roll reality.

      I can't recall the hazardous conditions but IIRC a couple didn't give a boost to the Ratskins, Long Shadows being the main culprit.

I could see a Ratskin as an alternative protagonist for the Hired Gun game, a renegade out to get revenge on the upper-level invaders who slaughtered their people. Forgoing the flashy guns and equipment for a stealthy approach, centered on silent weapons, parkour, and setting traps or exploiting environmental hazards.

Where (most) of the other weapons have one or more segments of lore along with rules and a small stat chart,, #4 only offers it's listing among special weapons for 55 points, and this bit of lore:
      This is a two handed version of the Pit Slave weapon, and cannot be used in conjunction with any other weapons except for pistols. Fortunately for Miners, this type of Rock Drill is not surgically attached. Use the weapon's profile listed in the Pit Slave Weapon section for this weapon.

      The Miner's shovel can also be useful as a weapon. It also must be used with two hands. However a Miner, trained in the 'Art of Shovel', is able to parry attacks, as if wielding a sword. The shovel is not a good weapon however, so a Miner attacks at -1 strength.

    You could have taken an hour on Outlanders and it wouldn't have been long enough. Just that bestiary and all the possibilities it opened up could have gone for 15 min. Eldar Scouts, Chaos Marines, Orks, Brood Brothers, Beastmen, Deamons; It opened the possibilities for a system built around the lowest common denominator troops (grounded in contemporary light infantry tactics) into the whole galaxy of 40K.

      It also made sense once you thought about the "what the hell would an ork, eldar scout or chaos space marine be doing on Necromunda?" • @ericmoveon
      @ericmoveon 3 роки тому

      Its often hilarious when marines try to face off against gangs in Necromunda. The hubris they suffer always leads them into perilous situations. Its like they forget that a melta-gun or flamer can ruin your day no matter who you are. I've seen a heavy stubber wipe out three marines in as many turns. And there is always a chance that piling on in hand to hand will be worth it. Realistically a leader armed with two swords has a good chance against a marine toe to toe.
      All things considered when I played marines against a gang, used cover liberally, and used conservative tactics to counter being outnumbered, the marines were incredibly difficult to dislodge. This once again proves that Necromunda is a game built on tabletop tactics and dynamic terrain. All the criticism comes from immature weebs that aren't interested in tactical simulation and will criticize balanced rules whenever their poor judgement leads them to lose.
      40K has done a great job of distilling down the type of player who can't handle a clear loss and has made rule that leave you with an ambiguous mediocrity of mutual slaughter every game. You play an army list in 40K, not a table top tactical game.

    I never really knew much about this part of Retromunda, so it's cool learning about it. Seems like they just folded the Redemptionists into Cawdor wholesale for Numunda. Hearing about the plague zombies in Scavvy gangs makes me hope that Poxwalkers get added in.
    The guy who got me into Warhammer always used to talk about Retromunda, and I'd thought the Ratskins were a despised Ratling gang.
    Did Venators absorb some of the lore for the old Spyrers?
    The Purge scenario sounds really awesome, and looks like it would be a great opportunity to use my extensive collection of 40K models in another game.

    I remember there was a big push on Necromunda at my local GW when I was growing up, I ended up buying a Spyre Hunter gang and wrote up a list for them... and then promptly never played a game as I was worried that they'd end up taking some terrible injuries and not be effective.
    Suffice to say, I didn't really get the game at the time.

      Spyers were a difficult gang to run; I enjoyed playing them but I had much more fun and success with my Ratskins or Goliaths.
      In our campaign they just died like dogs, mainly because most people in our group hated one of the players that ran them and we were gunning for him but mostly because they whiffed post-battle recovery rolls.

      Thanks! And no worries - a few people have asked the same thing! I make theatre and live events. Specifically, I design the bits of live events that involve animation, LED walls, projection mapping or any other sort of visuals.
      So while I only started doing THIS a few months ago, I've been using Adobe Suite for editing/composting for years, and my job involves working with performers, scripts, and occasionally giving lectures. All stuff that's useful for this sort of thing.
      There have been some new learning curves though - getting the tone right for a UA-cam video, grading for skintone, mics and audio editing are all new to me! 😂

    • @ScooterinAB

      Yeah. They're just too boring. When everything in 40k is turned up to 75, you need the Judge Dredd-ian super fascist cops that were the Arbites. It's just sad that they were never really a playable, working gang (meant as an arbitrator component in 1st and kind of weird and only semi-playable in 2nd).

      Our organizer allowed a player to field them but they were incredibly unbalanced with the rules at the time, especially the "we get special equipment for certain missions because we can" rule, so the guy would have stummers or silencers most of the time. Funny thing was he got a few of his guys captured and while those players played out the Rescue Mission, I just opted for something more characterful and Goliath-y; strip him of everything, put a sock over his man-bits, paint a happy face on his buttocks and "Pansy" on his chest and send him back uphive. The player said I couldn't keep the equipment but the organizer ruled that once I failed an ammo roll, the Executioner rounds were gone, but I really like the silenced bolt pistol more.

    I have still got my spyres they were a clearly an idea springing from the predator movie, I never bothered the ratskins no real reason why just they didn't do anything for me I had the two best ratskin miniatures "whistling Pete" and "old Tom" I used the redemtionists as chaos cultists but my favourite gang by far was the scavies which I never used the actual models I used skaven giant human rats would fit in perfectly in necromunda I thought there were some with flamers but I did away with the slaves carrying the barrels and just used them as shotguns the there were the jezzails which I used as auto guns I added various pistols and I used skaven slaves as zombies and rat ogres as scalie stand ins, the only mission they would play is hunting for food anyone captured would be eaten ( I have some pictures on my 40k video if you care to look)...cheers now

      Even more terrifiying was when Scavvies got to a certain size it was more cost-effective to simply hire a new scavvie and throw him in the pot. I can't recall but I think there was an FAQ that captured gangers could only feed a certain number of your gang.
      Even worse was being the attacker in the loot the guiders mission and if you got models off the board and killed a guilder, you made a ton of credits (was easy for our scavvie players to do once they were able to recruit 3D6 or more zombies).
