  • It's fascinating, but don't agree with it.
Of course I misspeak 6000 times, but it's cool. It's not a historical novel.
(Maybe it's easier to judge the main character than I say here 😂)

Thank you for this review, I'm super excited by Bataille and I love this book, it's so dense and symbolic and allegorical and brutal. Amazing.

I just wish I could read it in the original.... Maybe soon. Hope you're well Dimitris!

Awesome review, Quintain. I’ve wondered about this one-out of all the works of Bataille, it doesn’t seem to get discussed very often. Now you have definitely peaked my interest... Gravity’s Rainbow also just happens to be my favorite book.

I know! That lack of discussion is what makes me do a video like this. It's definitely interesting. Have you read any other Bataille works?
If you like this (and like Bataille) I would also recommend When Adam Opens His Eyes, by Jang Jung-Il. Bataille is outright referenced in the final story. I would NEVER suggest that book to people who aren't into transgressive stuff.
Thanks for the comment! Hope all is well.

Story of the eye is probably the only transgressive book I've read, and it was definitely an eye opening experience (no pun intended). I haven't read anything else by this author but he's always captivated me. Good review man.

Thanks for the comment, Russ. You should totally try out some more transgressive works if Story of the Eye didn't scare you too much, and more Bataille if you're interested in his stuff. Personally, I'm not sure he'll be a favourite of mine but he's got that bizarre factor that makes me return to his stuff, and it isn't bad to begin with. Getting to more of his works soon, probably.
I'm not widely read in the genre but maybe soon enough, right? By the way, your pun was too perfect, I don't believe it wasn't intended 😂
Editing to ask: is there anywhere on the internet that you talk about Story of the Eye?

Just grabbed the 1978 hardcover translated by harry mathews i've got a bottle of rye to accompany me :) Your review sparked my motive to pick it up.

Hell yeah!!!!! That's probably the best way to read it. I myself read the thing in the midst of a slow slip into the flu and a few nights with barely any sleep, and it really did add to the experience.
Do let me know how it goes, Mr. Pimp!
