Another topic I would love to hear about is being eco friendly/zero waste with pets. For me it would be Specifically younger or destructive dogs. My boy can destroy any toy in 5 secs and will eat the plastic and stuffing in them too. 😅 I am constantly throwing out toys and feel so much guilt for the planet when I do. But I also have seen eco friendly washable pee mats or compostable dog bags. I also know there are a few brands that claim to be eco friendly (but my dog rips through those toys very quickly too lol ). Bet there are things for other pets as well! I don’t hear a lot of youtubers cover the pet side of zero waste.

      Here is a very easy, cost-free and eco friendly way of getting your dog a toy;
Get some sticks or tree trimmings in your backyard and give it to your dog!
At least it'll eat wood chips ;)

Yes yes yes to all of those video ideas! Also an idea... with stores running out of products what if you made a video on how to make pantry staples at home like nut butter, sourdough starter, nut/oat milk or how to make things last longer like pickling, fermenting, or canning.

For me personally a video about: how to deal with eco anxiety during pandemic would be helpful. I'm struggling a lot with this, I can't buy my package free food, and I totally understand why, but it makes me feel really bad, when I see how much trash we're producing right now, compared to our normal amount of trash...

I still love hearing about sustainability related topics! But I hear you on people not being as concerned with sustainability right now, but it'll pass. I am curious to know the lessons you're learning since you've been in self-isolation. Have you been finding you save more money, or buy fewer things? Make do with what you have more? Just a thought. I definitely find myself trying to think up new creative projects to keep the boredom/anxiety demons at bay. Curious how your experience has been.

I really like that you didn't just list off individual things you stopped buying. You're the first person I've heard to say you stopped going to drive-thrus and buying pre-sliced food. Normally those types of things don't make it to lists like this, I love it! Not to mention the CO2 emissions when you're hanging out in the drive thru.... not everyone seems to care about turning off their car while they're waiting.

I would love to hear your thoughts on what eco pros or cons might come from this pandemic/world isolation. On one hand it seems like oceans and our air are becoming cleaner because of less traffic but will we go back to the old ways when it’s all done? Or because we are trying to keep germs away so much, there is a lot of “one time use” products being used a lot more now.

I checked out the physical copy of your book from the library right before national government buildings were shut down, so I've had it for a month and will continue to have it for the next month, when I'd usually only have a book for two weeks. Another shaving cream alternative (particularly for if you're shaving something like a beard or other sensitive areas) is to get a bar of shave specific soap (like arko) and a lather brush. It creates the same foamy consistency as shaving cream and a single bar can last years!

Love your list and have already done a few already or didn't see the point in their use a DECADE ago.
    1. Anything from a drive-thru
-> Need to make this a habit to avoid for better habits
    2. Individual cleaning products
-> Already on my list to do as I use up our current products
    3. Anything pre-sliced -> Invest in a sharp knives people - best tool in the kitchen. Avoided this since the listeria outbreaks that kept happening with, ahem, pre-packaged veggies.
    4. Incandescent light bulbs -> have for a decade - save money!!!
    5. Fabric softener -> scent sensitive, leaves a film on your dry lint tray which restricts air flow (drying slower) and a fire hazard - so never used them
    6. Room freshener Sprays -> if you check your work WHMIS sheets (Canadian) it contains carcinogenics - EWW
    7. Shaving Cream -> haven't used in over a decade - use a combo body/shave bar in the shower now!
    8. Razors -> life changing - got a Leaf Shave safety razor - pricey but works just like a disposable - no learning curve!
    9. Disposable plates and cutlery -> hard to avoid for parties - working on this one but camping and lunches - done!
    10. Out of season fruit & veg -> so hard with a toddler who loves bananas, but we only by north american otherwise, preferably Canadian (local) and farmers markets are so AWESOME!!!!
Would love to see content on pantry type meals with dry beans, chickpeas and lentils. I am good at canned versions for use in meals, but not the dry version - how do you get them ready to use exactly? hmm - help girl! Also, I am not vegan or gluten issues, but want to incorporate meatless meals a few days a week to make meals stretch, freeze well (batch cooking) and have great fulling plant proteins.

Just read an article about bulk "pulses" and how the current generation has lost how to cook them and never grew up with them. Food Sustainability, as we can grow many here in North America, I think will be a key aftershock to the "Slow Days" we are seeing now. Post 911, forever changed our security, but post global pandemic I think food supply chains will be forever changed and should be treated differently. Time will tell, but learning our grandparents "simple" diets and practices will help us all to buckle down, learn to live slower, more sustainably and stretch our money. Looking forward to your bulk based diet content!

Another important areas of life where we can be zero waste are ..
    1. Dress ...that is using a single long robe as a dress as in asian and african culture. Benefit: same dress can be worn by size 32 hip and size 38 hip persons. Fatty, shorty, slim& height people all can wear same long robes all through life. So fashion wastes are avoided.
    2. Single colour dresses - many culture wear single colour dresses...avoiding need to use toxic chemicals to colour and print dresses. Alternatives...natural colour sources can be used to colour our dresses.
    3. Cycles 4. Hand powered food processors, stone grinders, pestel and mortars( not sure of name) 5. Stone food crushers to make flour 6. Thick iron skillets that lasts 2 or 3 generations. 7. Buckets and boxes made of bamboo sticks and bamboo strips. 8. Firewood ovens that dont use petroleum cooking gases. .etc....the asian and africal cultures are naturally optimised for zero waste. 10. Using clay tumblers for drinks and clay plates which are recycled. 11. Using plates made of dry leaves and arica plant strips 12. Using plates made of dried banana tree barks. 13. Asians still use metal( brass and steel) lunch boxes that last 2 generations.
Please visit india, burma, bhutan, africa to have first hand experience of zero waste integrated as lifestyle.

I just want to say I love your videos, they are really motivating and I would love to see all of what you suggested in this video already (wardrobe tour etc) but also one thing I find challenging which I would love your help with is where to buy zero waste food items for celiacas . I unfortunately react really strongly to any product with says ‘may contain traces of gluten’, as I am highly sensitive. A zero waste food shop has opened in my area and I asked if I could buy rice, nuts etc in the food bins and the owner said as they also sell gluten based loose foods therefore nothing in the shop is gluten-free , so I sadly can’t buy there but I also cant find any gluten-free products in bulk packages or in food bins safe for me (I live in Spain) I would really love any suggestions, thank you 😊

I totally get the bidet concept, coming as I do from a country where all bathrooms have a self-standing bidet (as opposed to an attachment). What I'm not understanding is why you still use toilet paper at all if you have a bidet that will cover all your needs?. BTW, I was thinking about TP replacement options the other day, and considering those reusable fabric rolls .... but a bidet is a much cleaner option, thanks for reminding me of it!

I don't have drinking alcohol in my home; nor do I want to go buy some. would rubbing alcohol work instead of vodka? you can use hair conditioner to shave with too. could you check the bag with the safety raiser instead of having it in your carry on?I think the contents of checked bags are more flexible. I have thought about nixing the plastic raiser but not sure about using the alternative. a pro and con video would be good. a meal prep video would be fun too. I hear what you saw about sustainability being thrown out with the bathwater. my Local grocery store will no longer use reusable bags because of the fear of transferring germs. But what really made me mad was that they didn't even consider any alternative for those still concerned with environmental issues. they could have allowed us to bag our own groceries (sorry, this store also has beggars at the end of the aisle.) , OR put the items back into the now empty cart and allow the customer to bag the items from there. It's not like this is a new concept; Aldies anyone? growing up there wasn't grocery beggars at any store. this probably shouldn't surprise me about this store. they are also the only store that put in those bag yourself granola, grains and chocolate cover nuts dispenser. I was so proud of them for being the only store in my small town that has this sustainable option. then with in 3-6 month they ripped it out and went to prepackaged products. Yes this means they are in Plastic. let me explain I live in a town that has 1 grocery store and a Walmart as options to get food. we did have a Shopko that offered another food and clothing option but we all know what happened there. The general population are also young families that have lived here forever and retirees. Both groups get into ruts and it takes much longer then 3-6 months to change their patterns in habit and thought. they are also the only store that has put up these ridiculous plastic shields (they say to protect the cashiers). But it is in the wrong location to perform this task . they have placed them between the area you load the conveyor belt and the little desk to write checks on. So the area that you spend most of your time speaking with someone is unprotected. they should have made it more like a movie theater window with the little slot on the bottom to pass things throw and a round metal speaking area. Keep going with the videos and thank you for trying to be so upbeat in these trying times. by continuing to make videos you aren't just helping us you are helping you by staying busy and staying with your routine. idea for you. how do you make and edit you content? how did you get started making videos? how long from starting content creation did you start making a profit? you could do a "come cook with me" live feed. giving the recipe or ingredient list ahead of time.:)

    • @GoingZeroWaste
      @GoingZeroWaste  4 роки тому

I'm not sure about the rubbing alcohol, in principle, it should work but you would need to dilute it much more. I would try 1 part to 6 parts water and then spot test before you start spraying a bunch of fabrics. You can check a bag with a safety razor! But, I never check bags - I have a real weird thing about it. Great ideas on the cook with me! I do it on my IG stories all the time.

Cleaning products can be SO fucking hard. I have a great eco friendly cleaner that works on everything but glass...BUT the eco glass cleaner doesn't get the soap scum off my shower door, so I have to use a different cleaner for that. So frustrating. Cleans mirrors and windows great, but not shower buildup. Have to use a bleach cleaner for that. Only one that works thus far. Tried a few DIY ones too.

Love all the ideas. I'd love to watch some cooking/recipe ideas. Maybe your own spin on "what I eat in a day" kind of thing...? Stay safe!

I really don't like toilet paper anymore, water is so much better. And Bamboo TP or any paper is better too.

I kind of want to hear about the impact the virus is having on the environment. I know there's been a lot of suffering, and I don't think that justifies the positives, but if there are any, it's useless to deny them.

From my perspective, there are some temporary positives but in the long run, the effect will be quite negative. I started to make a video about it, but it's honestly to soon to tell the exact impact that it's going to have. I think animal populations might have a boom this year which would be the best thing I can project.

Jordan schlansky (sorry if it's not correct) always talks about bidets in the show and he is usually made fun of. I like to go to comments and look for people who supports him and like their comments. I think all people from the movement should support him on the bidets.

The vast majority of this stuff has been created to maximize convenience, save time, and reduce domestic workload (which mostly falls on women). I’m a resident doctor who works 120 hours a week and this all seems highly luxurious and a step backwards for women’s use of time.

I didn't realize buying incandescent light bulbs, shave creaming or fabric softener were saving you so much time.

Going Zero Waste I think my comment was fair, given that your other items included drive throughs, pre chopped produce, disposable plates, and cleaning products. I follow you on UA-cam, Instagram, and even bought your book, but your petty attitude towards people who genuinely have feedback for your content is highly disappointing. I value reducing waste as much as possible and have made drastic changes to my life, but there are huge downsides and things I have sacrificed (re time) to achieve this. As for your comment, Please ask yourself whether you are putting out content to garner praise as an environment guru, or to sincerely help people figure out ways to adapt to a reduced waste lifestyle. And if, at the end of that zero waste lifestyle, you think we need to just increase our time spent on domestic activity, I think your content needs to also reflect on the pros and cons that this can have on people’s lives. Everyone knows disposable items are bad for the environment, they still use them for a reason and surface-level content like this video doesn’t really educate anyone.

Marie Kim I think you’ve brought up a great point that I’ve thought about a lot, Marie. I don’t work that much (can you work less? Do you WANT to work less?) but I find cutting out a lot of things like social media, UA-cam, Netflix, staring mindlessly at my phone or computer and instead doing things like cooking, or what you would consider “domestic chores” actually allows me more time to think and reflect on my life and be more at peace. I don’t think “domestic chores” are in any way degrading to a woman or man or anyone else, which i felt like your comment implied but maybe I misinterpreted that. I understand for you it might literally be impossible, but for the average person the issue is how we choose to allocate our time, not whether we have enough of it.

A@@bryanas8314 good point. Every single one of us has the same amount of time allotted to us. And in all reality, I have found that since implementing zero waste and minimalism principles in my life, I actually have MORE time to do things I want to do, which happens to be-- cooking. I guess I just don't see how not buying these things is luxurious. So I'm right with ya on this.
