I am 70 and have been painting for 2 years tho very creative all my life. I'm impressed with your healthy approach to your art and find that pretty exceptional in one so young. I am on board with all you say . Thanks for your videos... they're a pleasure.

Katie you are doing an amazing job of juggling life and art and attempting to help others in this creative journey of life! I am 63 and was an RN in Canada, working 12 hr shifts, raising boys and feeling stressed out much of the latter part of my career. I began painting over 10 yrs ago, encouraged by my Mother who was a Quebec oil painter. I now sell my work on occasion, show regularly and love being retired and able to paint! Art to me is the missing link to balancing our lives properly. Our health is definitely improved when we can slow down and create! So this windy message is intended to encourage you to carry on your amazing path, you have all the right attitudes and values about things and I really support you ! xo Laura

I agree about using crap supplies to learn and practice. Better supplies don't make you a better artist - practice does. On the other hand however, I will say that if you can afford to use good supplies, you should. The difference is night and day. And if you can't afford good stuff but you do want to sell your work - buy student grade, but choose only colors with good light-fastness rating and acid free paper or other surfaces.
Years ago I used to be cheap and only use artist grade supplies for my studio work and play around with whatever when i sketched and traveled... until one day I was doing watercolor flower sketches in botanical gardens and i ended up with a crowd gathering around me and people wanting to buy those sketches on the spot. And there I was with cheapo paper that's warping and non perm Alizarin crimson and other cheapo student colors which I knew for a fact would burn out and fade within a year. I felt so bad! Since then I only use good supplies for everything, because one thing this experience taught me was that one person's doodle is a glorious work of art and a thing to treasure for another! And I want to always be able to sell to even just give away as gifts the things I create, and i want the receiver to be able to enjoy them for a really long time.
p.s. Thanks for all the great videos :) You have an awesome channel :)

yes, that's really sensible..and i still buy cheap paints to fill in the budget gaps, cuz I HAVE to have paint on hand..like air..lol. but I realized that it can be discouraging when lousy polymer and pigment load causes a poor reaction in your piece..while a bit more of an investment $ wise, same time, efforts, same hues,,,Ta Da!! satisfying!! I am hard on myself.. but I semi-jokingly say, I'm not talented enough to use cheaper paints lol ...(and get a good result)

Letting go and just using the good supplies is something I am just slowly getting over. I literally had stuff sitting around not being used, because I was scared I was like what is the point?! Now I've given myself permission to go crazy and not worry about it and it feels great, my work has improved because of it.

Hi Katie, This video made me cry towards the end when you talk about putting your work down. I do it every day, although my family and even the public say I am very talented. I am working on being more positive and confident about my work. I admire you so very much as well as your work. I started painting 2 yrs ago and you were the 1st video I watched. I have painted many of your paintings too. Just last week I painted your wisteria painting. At 1st when I started painting it I said to myself, "it looks like I painted a bunch of blotches on a canvas! I know thats what people will say.Why does Katie's look so beautiful!" Right then I said to my self- I really don't care I'm painting this how I feel and I will keep it. I won't even show anyone! When I finished it, I feel it came out beautiful. The same thing happened with your peony painting. I painted it last year and it came out horrible. I practice peonies at least once a day because thats my favorite flower an I say 1 day I will get it the way like it, so I painted the peony again a couple weeks ago and it came out ok. Not the best but I will keep trying!
I want to thank you so very much for sharing your talent with us and thank you for inspiring me and teaching me so much! Stay sweet and kind.

Katie, you are so sweet, so adorable, and so cute, but the main reason I like to watch your videos is because you come across as so real, so authentic, and so genuine in the guidance and information you offer to us wannabe artists, you are a true inspiration. Thank you, I'm a grandma who has just recently begun to paint on a daily basis, and you have given me so much encouragement, even though you have no clue who I am, nor where I am from. Again, thank you Katie, I want you to know how much you putting yourself 'out there' is doing for the confidence of artists such as myself. Gwynneth Sutherland, Roy, Washington, USA

Hello Katie. I just wanted to let you know how much I appreciate your work! It's fabulous!! I began my art lessons in High School and focused on value drawings. I'm now almost 54 years old and that part of my life got left behind. Working, raising my children, etc. just life in general can get in our way. I have been designing and handcrafting Jewelry and Home Décor for 4 years now selling at Craft Shows and Facebook. I have wanted to learn how to paint for a long time. I am confident in my jewelry skills, however, I wanted to expand the Home Décor part of Home Spun Charm. I decided to give painting a go and see where it leads me. I have ordered my supplies and am beside myself for them to get here. I began this journey a week ago and it was one of your tutorials that inspired me. Thank you so much for sharing your skills and artwork for the world to see what is possible when you put your mind to it. Gail Willson

Great advice Katie! Thanks so much 🙏. Funny thing….I started out painting this iron garden gate full of vines and roses that morphed into a 👿 👺 monster. I was getting frustrated but I loved my 🎨 palette so much, so I attacked the monster and morphed it into a colorful abstract, the composition didn’t make much sense but the colors made me happy! Best advice, just keep painting! Thanks again, love your positivity!

This came at a very good time for me. typically I like to paint animals or nature but recently I thought I'd try painting an inanimate object. so I painted a splashing glass of red wine just to see if I could get the glass to look realistic. I posted a pic on my Instagram and Facebook and people swooned over it. I had friends literally fighting over one piece 😂 So i decided to make a couple more...and before I knew it, it began to feel like work and I really started to hate it! I am still getting wine glass requests but like you said, I can't paint with the intent to sell. I realized if that's my intention then it no longer gives me that feeling of freedom, peace, and pure happiness that I get when I paint from the heart. Instead of getting lost in my art, I began getting frustrated and resentful! So thank you so much for posting this!!!!😚😚😚😚 From now on I'm painting strictly for ME☺

Being scared of pricey art supplies it's something I've experienced. It's not always easier to get over it but I'm now at that point where I just use it and it's more fun. Also learning about marketing it's such a long process and I'd love just to sell a piece without even thinking about it but obviously it is not possible lol. Thank you for this video, Katie. It's so interesting and useful 😍😍😍

All excellent & valid points, a very well done video .. . One effect that underpricing has, which people don't realise, is that underpricing makes it appear that you are worth 'only that much'. Another is when people see artists churning out product (rather than well-conceived original art) priced at 'only that much', & you too, price quality work at 'only that much'; through the magic of communication, this also becomes the reduced price that they expect to pay everyone else who has deservedly priced their work realistically. This also contributes to the perspective of those supposed 'buyers' who try to haggle over very fairly priced art - bringing us back to their belief that you are worth 'only that much'.

Just recently discovered your channel after finding my forgot about passion for art! I've subscribed to all your social media, I absolutely love and am in awe of your work & style of painting you are so talented I'm very inspired. The things you have mentioned in this video resenate with me so much, I struggle with self belief and am always trying to work on giving myself a little more self compassion so thank you for reminding me to do this, I also totally get what you said about not wanting to start anything as your scared to use the paints wasting etc, this is so me! I've spent quite alot of money on supplies in order to get started but I'm actually struggling to 'get started' for fear of failing so getting a little disheartened before even starting.

nothing wrong with starting out with cheaper products, but i have found that i use less paint with some of the better quality brands. nothing wrong in copying. the Beatles started as a cover band, copied other people song writing stiles, but were not afraid to do there own thing and changed the world. learn the rules to brake the rules. don't feed the trolls. help them to feed them selves. Katie your art is wonderful. how long did it take to be where you are?

Hi :) I agree with your points and definitely with stop bullying yourself, you are the first person who needs to be kind and encouraging towards you.
I wonder about the art supplies when it comes to selling a painting, especially about good vs cheap quality paint: I heard that cheap paint doesn't last long, that sun also discolors it... So I am wondering if selling art made with cheap paint is not considered selling a bad product. Should the price then reflect the fact that the art they are buying will not last forever? or should the buyers be advised to hang the painting on a wall where there is no direct sunlight?
I am all up for buying cheap and student quality supplies when practicing and sketching, but I am not sure about it otherwise. I would like to know your and other artists' opinion.

    • @KatieJobling
      @KatieJobling  6 років тому +2

If I'm practising I'm happy to use cheaper paint. But if I'm going to be selling a painting I will use more expensive materials that I know will last and be good quality. Art should never be up in direct sunlight, no matter the paint 😀👍🏻

In my opinion, I think you should undersell your work at the very start. When you eventually increase prices, it could be an incentive for potential buyers to purchase your work now before it gets even more expensive. If you start higher and then drop lower, it could cause potential customers to simply wait until you might drop even lower.

Your final comment says it all...it IS an art journey.....not an art career. Congrats on all of your art sales, you do beautiful work. Your work on a bad day is far better than mine on a good....but Im not comparing 🤭🤭 (I did your large peony tonight then ended up scraping it with a palette knife and tomorrow will probably turn it into a rose ha ha...just wasnt my night. Were you saying people 'buy' reviews and likes? Or dont buy into as in take no notice of likes and reviews...bit confused there. I think your 'likes' and comments are well deserved and earnt. Loving your honesty and to-the-point chats. I totally relate to the self judgement. I’m so hard on myself I don’t really need to hear more 😐... I do love good feedback though / sadly I tend to just notice all the bits I could have done better! I’m going to really try to focus on the good happy bits where it all worked out. As for pet portraits, I do them, soooo stressful. I am under so much pressure to get it perfect as their loved pet. I tend to do an almost photo likeness. It doesn’t come easy... yet! Thank you for your input to us budding artists, it’s so lovely to watch you paint. 🤗

I enjoyed watching this - I don't have any arty friends to talk to about these topics so it was reassuring to hear some of your points about self criticism and comparing yourself to others, I'm definitely guilty of both! Thanks for sharing x

Thank your for taking the time to share and encourage me through you're experiences . I felt each point to be spot on with issues I deal with. I am at the very beginning of my online journey. With so much to do it can be so overwhelming . Blinders and good self talk keeps me moving forward each day goals laughs I'm a big picture person who is learning to be content with a bite each day. I find you to be very calming, articulate and abundantly creative. Now .. also I can't tell you how much your videos have helped me and guided me. You are one of my mentors. Know that because of UA-cam and your desire to follow your own voice and share it inspires me I'm sure others as well too. I do mean to say without my mentors without this vehicle called the internet, with out you, I wouldn't be a success . So thank you and never doubt your importance! Personally I'm waiting for you to go live. Lol nudge nudge

goodness, you are expressing, nearly verbatim, so many moments, ''beliefs'', thoughts, i have around and during the creating of my art-work , my heartwork.... my experience and awareness!! cool; that encourages me to believe the possibilities are real . you are inspiring me :) being an introvert is only a hindrance in the marketing and selling..it is a block.. btw, new Sub.. thank you!!

Hi Katie, a fellow UK based artist here, but of the digital kind. I have recently been painting again (and really enjoying it) and been watching your videos (very good by the way... many thanks), and I was wondering if you could do a video about your prints. What company do you use? Do you bulk order? How do you feel about printing your work? What is the quality like? How do you make the costs work (I started looking, and its not cheap). It's a bit of a minefield :). I would love to see that. Take care and thanks for all your hard work.

I’ve done watercolour pet portraits and it is shockingly stressful. I usually paint two, so double handling. I put so much pressure on myself to get it right. I over critique it and it makes me so edgy.
Much happier painting florals and birds etc as this is for me. If I sell any, well that’s great… I can buy more paint 😀

Thank you for being so honest and open and sharing how you feel/think. Its nice to know I'm not the only person who feels those ways sometimes! The self criticism can be really hard to push away, but I have found that. Cbt is very good for that. I love that you drink tea 😄😄I'm from Ireland and I drink about 10 cups a day 😄😄
