    «I’m just pretending to be an artist» is my #1 thought. So relieved that’s kinda normal.

    My grandad used to cut up cereal packets and paint with oils onto them. I still have them.

      Hollie, that is so freaking awesome. Those cereal packets are worth more than anything hanging in the Louvre.

    I have trouble with anxiety and a lot of times I am struggling with self esteem and confidence. Often I do not feel that I am good enough at life in generel, but after I have made a drawing or painting, I am reminded that I am good at it and that I am pleased with it. I continue to remember that it is best to keep doing what you are good at, to become better and to remember that I am good at something :)

    I try to stay in the moment of joy from doing what I love while I'm painting (no expectations). This seems to help with any negativity that tries to creep in. Thanks for this video :)

    Ha you've just hit the nail on the head Katie. I've had all those feelings and still have them. I've just started painting and I can see how frustrating, exhilirating , disappointing it can all be and I've only done 3 LOL. I've painted 4 of your paintings (1 of which I threw in the bin which I probably shouldn't have done but I was having interruptions and was getting frustrated so I thought I'd better try this one on another day). I've been watching other channels but have still found yours to be the most calming and I still always go back to you no matter how many channels I watch. Patience is a virtue and when I find mine I'll be happy (I'm working on it)

    Katie! You are so, so fabulous. I started "painting" on my ipad last month, made lots of things, and decided "yeah I can do this", went out and got water colours, acrylics, pastels, canvasses, brushes, water brushes, and the VERY first thing I managed to create was one of your wave paintings. It's not perfect but considering a month ago I didn't know I could paint anything 2 dimensional (I used to do model horses) While I love my ipad pastel program (ipastels, dead easy for dufouses like me), I love actually putting paint to canvass. Thank you so much for helping by adding your tutorials.

    I'm 47 n just started back making art about a year ago.. It had been since I was a little girl! I'm self taught and yes I feel the same way u do.. Ive never fit in and keep to myself mostly.. The biggest problem I have is sharing my art on social media... I finally posted on fb, which I rarely use, but I put myself out there by stating that I am an artist! Lol Next is a website and posting my art! I love art and it truly makes me happy
    =0) Love your art!!!

    Hi kate I think you were right the first time. all artists have those thoughts. Perhaps different severities but everyone has those stages of like, not like, oh thats better, oh oh what have i done, ah now im getting somewhere etc. I would be very suspicious if someone told me they didnt. I just would not believe them lol

    I always see you make bright landscapes. Can you make a painting with a more of a darker kind of landscape? By this I mean a dark forest or a foggy mountain landscape for example. I would be very curious how that turns out

    Loved it, Katie! You keep me focussed on keeping at my art. I have limited energy due to long term illness and tend to get frustrated because I want to be drawing loads but can only do short spells. In this little video you mentioned Betty Edwards drawing on the right side of the brain. It was amazing you mentioning her and it lifted me up! I bought that and the colour book a month or so ago and am steadily working through it and I'm going to stick at it and enjoy it, like you say, without putting pressure on myself, which I tend to do. I'm 52 but saw on another of your videos that a lady of 70 or so had been painting for just 2 years. If she can do it so can I! Thank you lovely lady x

    I sometimes have an amazing idea that doesn't translate onto the canvas and I never say "I am not an artist" but I say, "this needs to be painted over" Sometimes, I paint a better painting over the one I painted over! Anyways, us artist may be a critical of ourselves, we are all (I think) sensitive in some form! Keep it up girl! You always keep me inspired! I have over 200 canvas paintings I am happy with and over 500 paintings that are gone because I changed my mind (over the course of 11 years)

    When people talk about "cheating", they actually mean they think you should be able to draw realistically without reference images. I used to think the same thing. It's just an expectation that needs correction. *We should always be using reference images* . It makes a big difference to the realism of your work. I tend to do bad drawings with focus on the composition, then after i know what's actually in the picture, i use references to make my ideas come to life.

    I really appreciate this video, because I have a bad habit of listening to my inner critic. I am so grateful you've addressed this, as an artist I absolutely look up to, and that you go through the same thing. You're an amazing artist and a wonderful inspiration! How long have you been painting ? I started 1.5 years ago and am now selling and I haven't even put up any ads other than FB- selling to people I know. I'm not even necessarily looking to do it as a career, it is a joy for me, but I have more fun painting to paint and have a difficulty with painting items that are specifically for sale. Much love xoxo

    My paintings have been apart from the background ground started in an ugly phase that I increasingly get more unsettled with to the point I don't think they will come out of the ugly phase.. lol so I hear you on all those doubts . I usually have to walk away for a bit and have visual challenging discussions with them when I star at them until I can continue or I just keep painting until I'm happy or OK with it. I don't trust my painting voice yet.. lol as there are many that the fingers dance after . I am having a great time painting! Ty for your insights !

    Thanks for this video Katie. I am really trying hard to develop my ability to draw and paint (with watercolour at the moment) and I recently completed I guess my very first major piece. I found it such a challenge and did go through the self doubt stages...still am probably lol. It was meant to be a watercolour with a few pencil highlights but I totally got the skin wrong then omg the hair was ghastly painted. So firstly I thought I've started this and have come this far so I told myself I had to rescue it somehow. I began by working on the skin tones by rendering it in pencil it's still not perfect but it's actually not bad at the same time. Then an artist friend said re the hair, "don't give up it doesn't matter what your process is it's about just following through til the end." She meant that yes process is more important than the product but its as important as perseverance. So I did the hair in the same way as the skin and now have a mixed media piece that looks amazing for a first piece and I've had comments offline that have been so encouraging so I did post it on instagram in the end. She's not perfect but I'm really proud of how well she's turned out and I learnt so much from the process of rendering in pencil and therefore I feel I should be proud of my overall effort. Sorry if this was a storybook comment.

    Process 100% accurate. That's what I feel too. Unfortunately we gotta push through it and not give up even when we feel like we've done our worst work. We have to work work work and not give up. It's how it is. We stagnate if we give up on just one work. We just have to remember that no matter the art we do even if for us it doesn't look good we got to keep doing it. We will get better eventually. Practice makes perfect

    Ha ha ha...yes I've wasted lots of supplies in the beginning ....I've learned to put those paintings aside and rethink it instead of washing them off....sometimes ones mood can be very critical ..comeback to it and add on to it ....

  • @FuriedHearts
    @FuriedHearts 5 років тому

    I’m terrified of “wasting” supplies too! That’s my #1 OCD when it comes to painting specifically (I don’t really experience this with other art mediums). I think it’s because with painting I perceive a piece using up a lot of volume of paint. That’s why I’m scared to use my Winsor & Newton oils. They’re tiny 37 ml tubes and many of them are $30 each 😨. I know it’s silly to be afraid to use them but the price range specifically for oils gives me anxiety 😂😂 I should probably buy more student grade oils then

  • @ellec7827

    Excellent choice on the book! I actually have that one and live by it. Thank you for sharing your insights. I'm a self-taught artist...well, working on being one. I totally get the stages of concept to self-doubt. I sometimes find myself on that merry-go-round too often since this "want" to create beautiful art has become my obsession. It is hard though to quiet the negative self talk, but it can be done.

  • @markborder906
    @markborder906 5 років тому

    The stages you list are, I suspect common to all artists, I remember hearing a major architect in an interview many years ago sate that he went through the same stages with his designs.
    I also agree, it’s vital that you keep going. If you give up, then you are more likely to give up on the next work and, after a few times, give up all together.

      Patrick Tweedie
      Just try it, if you are using acrylic, using oils is very similar but you will find that oil has so many advantages (other than the fast drying).
      I use both, but always find oil so much more satisfying, partly because the different colours have a different “feel”, with experience you can identify some pigments just from the feel, yellow ochre is one such.
      I really recommend you give it a go, you won’t regret it.

    Oh yeah, self-doubt is my Achilles heel. Here's my struggle. I'm a confident writer, pretty good really. That's my real art - I'm published and all that. So, I recently took up acrylic painting and since I'm just a beginner, I'm not very good. I guess I had higher expectations of myself since I am artistic, but I feel like kind of a failure since it's not coming to me naturally. I know that's not rational, but I guess that's the process all artists go through at some point.

    Hi katie love your tutorials, your an awesome teacher.learned so much from you. I was wondering if I could have your permission to paint one of your seascapes and possibly sell the painting? Awaiting your response. Thank you.

      Thank you so much. I’m so pleased you like the tutorials. It’s fine to paint them, but please don’t sell. I don’t like to think anyone is buying a painting thinking it’s original, when there are lots of copies online. Thank you! 😄
