6 mo later: I have found the Geneva a bit more clear than KJV, possibly even eliminating the concordance, although I was not seeking to be lazy about the words. For instance, Potiphar in the Geneva is called exactly what he is, a eunuch. KJV requires a concordance. Suddenly it sheds light on his wife, as to why she wanted Joseph, and gives her a chance to defend herself... that maybe the woman was desperate for a child which castrated men don't beget. Many of my peers, even myself thought this was an adulterous woman. I've since reconsidered that because of the added clarity.
The question is not which reading one believes to be easier or clearer according to their own understanding, but rather which has the correct reading regardless....

This version is lovely. I’ve been looking for a Geneva Bible *app* that retains the original spelling. I had one, I loved it, I had all my notes in it. Then my phone crashed.
That’s when I realized how much I referred to it, it was front and center on the home screen, dear to my heart.
And when I went to get the app again, even though I had lost all my notes… The one I had is not available, although there is one using the same icon, though from a different developer than the one I had, or so it seems. Some things are the same, some things are different.
My version had many fonts to choose from, which was wonderful. It had more little adjustable details, such as letter and line height and spacing, but most importantly, it retained the original spelling, and the fonts held to the original forms of certain letters as well.
When I saw the same icon, for a moment, I thought I had found it. But no, I was mistaken. Although the page layout is the same, it is a stripped down, bare-bones, modernized version than what I had. Heartbreaking.
There are a handful of Geneva Bible apps…but they all are “modernized”. What’s the point of a modernized Geneva Bible? Don’t we have enough “modernized“ Bibles?
They all have “fixed“ the spelling. I do not want it “fixed”. I want it exactly as-is, like it is here.
Not everyone wants things dumbed-down for them. It’s been a vexing situation to try to find an app in the original spelling. I just want the one that was on my phone that died. It was perfect. I’m looking for some rogue app, because app stores and large market places only have the stripped down, modernized Geneva Bible.
I have a flash drive with wonderful old Bibles on it, including the Geneva, but I like having one that I can read on my phone, wherever I am, at anytime.
I also use it to compare, and see how far some have drifted away when they go quoting the Bible from modern translations. I prefer KJV or earlier, and I’m really fond of the Geneva in particular.
I am still on the lookout for an app where I can just go right to a particular book, and keep some notes as well.
And I would love an early Bible…one with no verses, to read the scriptures as they were originally written. It does change the flow, and sometimes it’s really important. Sometimes they really chop it up to make a verse, in weird spots that I don’t particularly like. Even in mid-sentence, for example.
I wouldn’t mind reading it as it was, just with the original flow. I don’t know how it was in Hebrew and Aramaic, (and Greek and Hebrew for the NT), if they made paragraphs and chapters, or if they just wrote all the way through a book or letter, but I don’t mind just reading it the way the scribes would have done… in our language. Clearly, we don’t read right to left as they did and do, and so forth.

I wish that some publisher would release an edition of this 1560 Geneva Bible with spelling modernised. It is nice to have a facsimile (and I have this in hardback), but I suspect that I and others would use it more if it were in modernised spellings (not involving word changes, just the Geneva's words spelled as current Enlgish spells them in either England or in the U. S. of A. There is such an edition of the 1599 Geneva Bible, but it lacks the Apocrypha, which the 1560 Geneva included. This would be helpful for Lutherans and Anglicans who use the Apocrypha to varying degrees.

Quite a nice video. I have considered getting this facsimile, and now I want it even more.
It has some good features, the thick paper in particular. The archaic typeface can be a bit tricky to read. But I like this Bible quite a lot. I may get it rebound one of these days.
I have other books with the archaic typeface, otherwise I would be bewildered by it. You did a great job of describing its features, at any rate.

Beautiful bible
Had the good fortune of acquiring one of these several years ago. It's one of my prized possessions! My only real disappointment with it is the ink fluctuations from page to page (i.e., some pages lighter than others). This could be a combination of printing technique used in olden times, as well as Hendrickson's digital process of "cleaning up" the text after it's 'photographed.'

A first "bible" was paperback "Good News bible" from catholic middle-junior school, personal use. Did not read in its entirety. Decades later have kjv -read front to back and of course, study and inspiration. Investing for the Geneva.

I have had trouble deciding which bible is the most likely to be the God's word : 1611 king James or 1560 geneva bible.
Aside for the way it's written, the geneva bible seems to be the most accurate Bible.
Since you pointed out how the geneva doesn't shy away from disrespecting Kings at the cost of following God whereas king James is more subtle

My new little Cameo has the Apocrypha which is so strange for me to get used to but its very nice to have for study and reference esp historically. The red letter in this little thing is the best red can get unless it becomes black LOL

The Cameo in this video is red letter also. That's the same book I used to compare to the Thompson Chain KJV's red in my quick, critical review of that Bible a few months back. The Cameo's red print isn't that bad. It's the best I've seen in recent history. But an even deeper burgundy would have been better -- and, you're right, black would have been best.

Thank you SO SO much for this video! It's exactly what I needed to see - a review & explanation of the content & layout of the 1560 version, as well as confirmation that the 1599 version (which I happily already own) is still a legitimate option. After many upgrades over the years replacing various other erroneous versions of the Bible (catholic, NIV, NLT, & NKJV), I had to wonder after having recently learned that the KJV is just as tainted as all the others! I was surprised to discover that King James, from what I've gathered online, was quite a corrupt deviant (a homosexual, sadist towards both animals AND people, and flat-out narcissist who wanted everyone to worship HIM instead of God's TRUTH) - something you wouldn't expect having been told the KJV was THE standard version to study (inasmuch as the English translation allows). Anyway, I will be looking into getting a 1560 version as soon as possible because it gets even closer to the original scriptures, & I love the side notes vs. notes at the bottom. Again, this has been a hugely valuable service to me, so thank you, kindly, once again for putting the hard work in for us! :) God Bless!

The Douay-Rheims bible is the most accurate bible translation.
My review of Geneva Publishing Company's facsimile 1599 Geneva Bible can be viewed at ua-cam.com/video/fS95JMmSYag/v-deo.html . Note that the Tolle Lege 1599 edition that makes a brief appearance in the video above is a completely different book. The Geneva Publishing Company's 1599 Geneva Bible is a true facsimile, like Hendrickson's 1560. The Tolle Lege edition is set in modern type, has modern spelling, and has been radically reformatted.
The writings in the Anglican Apocrypha but not included in the Douay-Rheims and other Romish Catholic Bibles are, however, included in really complete editions of the Clementine Vulgate Bible, as appendix matter. So, it is not quite entirely true that Romish Bibles do not include that handful of writings.
What’s your take on Revelation 18,the last verse,the Geneva and some older English bibles read “THE prophets,THE saints”,where most bibles don’t have “THE”, is it omitted in other translations or was it added in the Geneva and other older translations?
The small caps "LORD" convention wasn't adopted consistently at the time, but I think it was first introduced in 1530 by William Tyndale.

The hardback ed. is very well done and sturdy, buckram over boards, well connected to the spine. It is so fine in its own right that I cannot see any reason to have a leather bound ed. of this Bible. The hardback binding very likely would outlast the leather one.
I've grown to appreciate hardback Bibles more in recent months. They can be stored upright, and so are easier to access. Also, they take up less room on a desktop when not in use.

Sure. But before I start, remember that this is just an estimation technique: It assumes that the density of paper used in most Bibles is fairly constant.
(1) Tally the page counts for the various sections (introduction, Old Testament, New Testament, any blank pages, etc.).
(2) Measure the thickness of the text block in mm.
(3) Divide the text block width by the page count. The resulting value is usually somewhere in the range 0.01 to 0.03 mm/page.
(4) Convert that value to a thickness per sheet by multiplying by 2000. The 2 comes in because there are 2 pages per sheet. The 1000 is needed because there are 1000 micrometers per mm.
(5) Multiply by 0.914.
Where does 0.914 come from? It's an estimate of the paper density derived from measuring the text block thickness divided by the sheet count for ten Bibles of known paper weight. If you think about it, thickness per sheet multiplied by paper density gives you mass per square area per sheet, which is paper weight. If the sheet thickness is 35 x 10E-6 meters (35 micrometers), and I multiply by a paper density of 0.914 x 10E6 grams per cubic meter, the 10E-6 and the 10E6 cancel, and we're left with paper weight (35 x 0.914 grams per square meter).
But using that value (0.914) gives an estimate that's a bit too high for Cambridge Bibles with "high opacity" (read "low density") paper. So if I suspect the paper is "high opacity", I use the lower factor (~0.84).
I've thought about making a video to go through this in detail, but I suspect it would be about as popular as my "How to Measure Line Height" video -- in other words, not very popular. Thanks for the question!

You have the First printing version of this, 2007, Printed in the USA.
My leather edition is 6th Edition, 2016, Printed in China.
All else is the same.
What do the star-like asterisks within the text mean? They are quite prevalent on the first page of the book of Psalms. (10:10 is this video)
They signal the presence of a marginal reference. For instance, there's an asterisk next to "heathen" in Ps 2.1. In the margin nearby Acts 4.25 is printed. If you go to Acts 4.25, you find an asterisk at the beginning of "Why did the Gentiles rage ...", with a marginal note directing you back to Ps 2.1.

@@RGrantJones May I be so bold as to ask another question about the text? In the Header of information that is at the beginning of John Chapter 1, there is an unfamiliar symbol. It comes after the word "humanitie" on the first line and looks almost like an "&" but different. I would be so grateful if you could enlighten me again, Dear Teacher.
@@chrismuller6563 - it is an ampersand, just shaped a bit differently. That heading maps the divinity of Christ to verse 1, his humanity to verse 14, and his office to verse 17.

The annotations in the Geneva Bible are distinctly Calvinist. It’s a Calvinist bible. One good thing about the Geneva Bible, at least it has the canonical books such as; Tobit, Wisdom, Baruch, Maccabees, etc.

What’s the difference between the 1599 and the 1560?
I discuss some of the differences in this video, ua-cam.com/video/NkpctqtlK3s/v-deo.html . A man named Laurence Tomson revised the translation in the 1570s, and many editions of the 1599 Geneva Bible include his changes. In that video, at about the 24:37 point, I show the translation changes I found in Romans. Many alterations to the notes were made also, usually by expanding them. I show an example of changes to notes in that same video at the 20:12 point.

The 1599 geneva bible by tolle lege press is easier to read bec it modernized the spelling. The notes in the margin got moved to the footnote area so the notes are also easier to read. 1599 original did not seem to have apocrypha. It seems the first Bible in English to exclude the Apocrypha was the Geneva Bible of 1599.

I used the NKJV for many years. Then I read the ESV and loved the wording. But when I opened to John 7 one day, I decided to read it. I was shocked. The ESV quoted Jesus lying to his brothers! He said he was not going to the feast. Not going, not me.
Jesus actually said I am not going up yet to the feast. No not now, not yet.
They both wait and then go. Which one lied?

The one that promised preservation. Psslm 12:6-7. "The words of the Lord are pure words: as silver tried in a furnace of earth, purified seven times.
Thou shalt keep then O LORD, thou shalt preserve them from this generation forever."
Please note. It does not say that other things will not be written about it to 'historically' prove it false. In fact the translators seemed to indicate that the perfection was in the salvation message.

It is not taken from the manuscripts that replaced the Antioch Textus Receptus.
That was replaced by the 'older' manuscripts called the Codex B or Vaticanus from the Vatican basement. The other is Sianiticus. They do not agree with each other and the latter has about 30 changes per page. These changes were mainly made by a 15th century scribe.

Personally I think that the Geneva Bible is better at expressing what the Word of God is conveying in English. It seems to be more like our modern English; do you think so too?

Everyone learns different though and I understand the need for modern versions. We need to check every expression with the original Scriptures or roots where they we're originally written by the holy men of God; (in my little opinion)

I have been considering purchasing this bible, but I came across the following 2 criticisms:
#1 In II Samuel 21 it says that Elhanan killed Goliath, with I Samuel 17 saying David killed Goliath. #2 II Samuel 21 says that Elhanan killed Goliath, with I Chronicles 20 (a parallel to II Samuel 21) saying Elhanan killed the brother of Goliath. A marginal note says that it was Goliath's brother who Elhanan killed in II Samuel 21, whilst in I Chronicles 20, the text itself states that it was Goliath's brother who Elhanan killed and not a marginal note.
Can you verify this please? I may purchase this bible, even with the inconsistency for its historical value, but I just wanted to see what you think.
In 2 Sam 21.19, the 1560 Geneva Bible says that Elhanah slew Goliath, but the note in the column explains that Goliath's brother Lahmi is meant. 1 Chron 20.5 explains that Elhanah slew Lahmi, the brother of Goliath. So what you've written seems accurate. (I notice that the KJV inserts "the brother of" in italics in 2 Sam 21.19.)

I do like this Bible quite a lot. If you get one, the binding might seem stiff at first. But if you break it in a few times using the librarian-approved method, it will relax.

I read that Geneva Bible, KJV, and Luther Bible became household items in Middle Ages throughout Europe. Many people were reading these everywhere. Is this correct?
Yes, I think it's true -- only it was a bit later than the Middle Ages. I understand that by the late 16th century Bibles had become inexpensive enough for working people to own them.

btw, I finished reading half of Apocrypha, it is a very interesting religious read but has legends and anti-Abrahamic theology stuff too. It does not mention God much, nor invoke the name of the prophet.
@@hassanmirza2392 - I'm not sure what you're asking when you mention stability. The Geneva Bible text and notes were revised between 1560 and 1599 -- the notes much more than the text --, but not since then as far as I know. The Geneva Bible influenced the KJV, and they read similarly. But sometimes I find the Geneva easier to understand.
In the facsimile version of the 1537 Matthew bible,there appears to be capital cursive J's, but no capital I's. That is, Wherever the capital I would be, the cursive capital J is in it's place.
Also, there is a 1560 defined Geneva new testament in modern spelling by Dr. David L Brown and James Krueger.
The "cratche" thing surprised me because we're used to manger being used there. Edit : A bit of version comparison shows that wycliffe used the same word, and it was the only one in english before Geneva to use it.

I was likely misled into thinking the J wasn't present in English before 1633 by this sentence in a Wikipedia article: "The first English language book to make a clear distinction between ⟨i⟩ and ⟨j⟩ was published in 1633." But, of course, as you point out that *doesn't* mean that Js weren't used earlier.
R. Grant Jones you're welcome. I once thought things like that about the letter j. Then I saw it used in wycliffe and Canterbury. the reason why I had the confusion was because there are websites that claim to have old versions (retype?) in Roman font but most of the old spelling is there with exception of the "long s" that looks like an f. In these, tyndale thru 1611 kjv have no Js but wycliffe has "Jhesus" for Jesus. Another thing,These digital readings don't completely agree with their facsimile counterparts and occasionally a random verse is skipped.

The 1599 edition has longer, more detailed notes. The translation is a bit different in places in the New Testament as well. Also, some printings of the 1599 edition omitted the Apocrypha section, and modern reproductions of the 1599 edition usually do so.

No, it isn't. This is a 1560 Geneva. Between 1560 and 1599, the Geneva Bible was revised by Laurence Tomson. It's not hard to find differences between the 1560 and the 1599 if you read them side-by-side. The Hendrickson 1560 Geneva is bound in flexible leather.

Looks like you got your Mary's confused. King James I of England is the same person as King James VI of Scotland and his mother was Mary, Queen of Scots, who was a cousin of both Queen Mary I of England and Queen Elizabeth I of England. Both of the mentioned English queen's were childless, yet, the Scottish Queen Mary had a little boy (James) when Queen Elizabeth I executed the Scottish Mary. Whilst King James VI was a boy King, Scotland was under a Regency till he came of age. Years later, when Queen Elizabeth I of England died childless, King James VI of Scotland was the closest living relative, thus becoming King James I of England. I'm a fan of history and a monarchist.

In 1604, the year after he claimed the throne of England, King James I hosted and presided over a conference pertaining to matters religious, the Hampton Court Conference. While the Geneva Bible was the preferred Bible of Anglican and Puritan Protestants during the Elizabethan Age, King James I disliked the Geneva Bible and made his views clearly known at the conference: "I think that of all [English Bibles], that of Geneva is the worst." Apparently, his distaste for the Geneva Bible was not necessarily caused just by the translation of the text into English, but mostly the annotations in the margins. He felt strongly many of the annotations were "very partial, untrue, seditious, and savoring too much of dangerous and traitorous conceits..." In all likelihood, he saw the Geneva's interpretations of biblical passages as anti-clerical "republicanism", which could imply church hierarchy was unnecessary. Other passages appeared particularly seditious: notably references to monarchs as "tyrants". It followed that the need for a king as head of church and state could be questioned also. James had been dealing with similar issues with the Presbyterian-Calvinist religious leaders back in Scotland, and he wanted none of the same controversies in England. Also, if annotations were in print, readers might believe these interpretations correct and fixed, making it more difficult to change his subjects' minds about the meanings of particular passages.

So when towards the end of the conference two Puritans suggested that a new translation of the Bible be produced to better unify the Anglican Church in England and Scotland, James embraced the idea. He could not only be rid of those inconvenient annotations, but he could have greater influence on the translation of the Bible as a whole. He commissioned and chartered a new translation of the Bible which would eventually become the most famous version of the Bible in the history of the English language. Officially known as the Authorized Version to be read in churches, the new Bible would come to bear his name as the so-called King James Bible or King James Version (KJV) elsewhere or casually. The first and early editions of the King James Bible from 1611 and the first few decades thereafter lack annotations, unlike nearly all editions of the Geneva Bible up until that time. Initially, the King James Version did not sell well and competed with the Geneva Bible. Shortly after the first edition of the KJV, King James banned the printing of new editions of the Geneva Bible to further entrench his version. However, Robert Barker continued to print Geneva Bibles even after the ban, placing the spurious date of 1599 on new copies of Genevas which were actually printed circa 1616 to 1625. Despite popular misconception, the Puritan Separatists or Pilgrim Fathers aboard the Mayflower in 1620 brought to North America copies of the Geneva Bible.

There are plenty of ways for you to read Sacred Scripture. Long as you allow the Wisdom within to transform you, it really doesn't matter what version you use.
However, if you have the means, I suggest buying a fancy Bible as a longterm spiritual investment for not only you but your descendants. Let your grandchildren know that "this" (Bible) is their story and their legacy, a precept reinforced by the book's quality.
Nonetheless, if you're unsure of God's will for you concerning this matter, just pray on it.
