  • Varanasi may be one of the most important cities in India - for the hindu population anyway.
I have seen it many times in documentaries, all those staircases leading all the way to the Ganges river where local people take their bath - but I had a need to see it myself. So join me on this little trip along the banks of the river, exploring the Ghats, how these ceremonial sites are called, and learning more about the Hindu religion.
There are 84 ghats in Varanasi and most are used for ceremony and bathing, only two of them are used exclusively for cremation - which in itself is an experience on a whole other level.
But we will not stay on the ghats, we will also get the chance to explore the streets of the city, get a tea with locals, enjoy some Hindu temples and explore the campus of the Baranas Hindu University.
And in the end we will witness one of the most iconic ceremonies in Varanasi - the Aarti ceremony, which is performed every day after sunset and - spoilers - it is really something.
    So let's go, right?
