Gets death threats for writing a book about the act of killing
It's so ironic it hurts
hey that is satiric at its best
"How dare you support killing by writing a book, I'm gonna shoot your brains out". LOL
That happens alot actually.
People celebrated the killing of ted bundy because he killed people.
A Ninja humans are natural savages
I hate this list. Why are books banned? This is stupid.
1984 isn't just a great novel, it's also a warning of what will happen if we aren't careful. We're very close to living in the world that 1984 depicts.
To be honest, it is a pretty accurate prediction. While of course america isn't a police state, some of the aspects of the book are very similar to that of which we find in modern society.
Close?
Take a look around homeboi. You're already deep in it my man.
We carry around microphones, cameras and up to the second tracking devices in our pockets willingly.
We're so far past 1984, it's like we're in 2015 or something!
+Eclipton - We're really living in a melding of 1984 and Huxley's Brave New World.
+Eclipton where not close to 1984 where way past it, its 2015 not 1983
When it comes to George Orwell, I actually preferred Animal Farm. Super good book, if you haven't read it.
Catcher, Lord of the Flies and 1984 should not be banned. Do we censor Michel Angelo's sculpture David? No... do we cover the breast in Birth of Venus? No... because it's art and those books should be held in the same regard.
amen
censorship is bullshit
Slevin Reviews Harry Potter should not be banned.
amen

*writes book about violence* *people don't like violence* *threaten to kill author* Yeah because that makes sense
*Doesn’t like book about violence, threatens violence* Yeah, makes sense to me.
Must have been liberals
Does anyone else appreciate the irony of Fahrenheit 451 being banned?
yes.
I cannot think of anything more ironic than the heavy censorship of a book about heavy censorship.
Yep
User X in the words of Joseph joestar "oh my god"
I do! Sooo much irony it almost hurts!
So much for free speech.
Freedom of speech applies only to the government censoring you. If a school or private group doesn't like the book and doesn't want people under their supervision to read it they have the right to say is not officially condoned top read or becuase they still can't make you not read it just highly recommended you don't.
+MoBeeLex well this list is out write ban on all sales too
+Justin Schauwecker What is "political correct" is simply a matter of opinion. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
+MoBeeLex Yea have fun explaining how freedom doesn't mean that you are free... I'm astonished you don't see the irony...
+Sir “Namur” Pharsys
First off in a country like the US even though they "banned" the books they didn't ban them. You could still read them and they can't do anything to you for it they Jay highly encourage you not to.
You also don't have complete freedom. You can't walk into a crowded theater and tell fire becuase people can get seriously hurt as they try to get out. You can't murder someone cause you feel like it. As bad as that might sound we have laws and rules dictating that you can't do that. If you had complete freedom you could do that without any organizational structure to come bearing down on you. Hell that's what organizational structures are meant to do: limit our freedom for the betterment of society and we voluntarily do it. I'm not saying i agree with giving up freedom or that we should ban those books but we aren't fully free just free enough to get the feeling we are.
no mention of "scrottymcboogerballs"?

Thank you for this

+ArmaBiologica35
Any reason for banning words or ideas is bullshit because you're trying to make the intangible disappear.
Just to point out something (I have nothing against the books).
In the Caribbean several strange occurances happened in high schools where teens who read the books displayed behavior as if they were "possessed" and also many students and teachers witnessed supernatural activity where students were levitating along with school furniture. I didn't believe it at first till it happened in a school near my home. Im not saying that these events were the direct results of the books but all the students who had these experiences we reported to have recently aquired the books and were reading them obsessively.
I'm ordering every book they named
You sir, are freaking awesome.
Enjoy dude
Savage....lol
+PROMOH'S DREAM If you do that, you will be banned!
+Saffron Mischief Don't encourage him.
Harry Potter getting banned for religious reasons.... Wth
its insanity
Fuck Fundamentalism
IKR smh
This movie called Jesus Camp came out in 2006 and showed clips of kids at a religious camp and they were being brainwashed into thinking that Harry Potter is satanic devil worship.
It was banned for putting actual wizardry in the book series.
all ads where someone is "singing" should always have a skip option. ALWAYS!
get an adblocker !
I have a skip option on my computer.
epp6681 all ads in general should have the option to skip
There should be no ads in the first place
SouthernGirl47 then our youtubers wouldn't be paid, and most would move on to other things as Bills exist, yes ads are annoying, but if they are completely removed, there goes all of UA-cam,
but those ads are absolute garbage so I can agree slightly
Harry Potter? Really? Do some religious people think that kids would start doing witchcraft? Really?
There was no point during reading HP on which I thought about occultism. Following that logic we all should go mental after reading *any* fantasy book or any piece of folklore :D
+Saffron Mischief See my comment above. Witchcraft is really different from magic. "The Wizard of Oz" and "The Chronicles of Narnia" have magic, as does "The Lord of the Rings."
Apparently so because they are so into religion and they don't understand that it is common sense that witchcraft does not exist. I remember at school when we went to the library to discuss about banned books and when I heard the reason why people are trying to ban Harry Potter, I almost died of laughter.
+Saffron Mischief Some people are just that stupid.
Some Ersatz Christians are just that nuts. My spiritual director, a Benediction monk, loves the Potter stories.
Brave New World Banned in India for PORNOGRAPHY?
That's ironic, since Kama Sutra was written there.
Hindu yoga porn?
@Harshita Munjal Doesn't Kama Sutra contain sexual yoga poses though?
Well looks like bollywood music videos are next...
Hindu Yogi porn...
@Harshita Munjal Bless you my child. Have a vegan cookie, and pat yourself on the back for your diligent defense of your favority swami's ego, Have you ever looked up any terms similiar to 'irony' in the vedas, or the Gita, babe?
Huck Finn is a beautiful story. You slowly watch the narrator go from seeing the runaway slave, Jim, as property to a kind and loving person... until he eventually goes against everything he’s ever been told, convinced that he’s going to help him, even if it sends him to Hell, like all the slave owners have told him doing so would. And Jim... who’s always the sweetest, loving father figure to the young boy.
I read Huck Finn for the American lit class in HS, back in the 60’s. We started with Edward’s “sinners in the hands of an angry God” and wound up listening to Ochs and Dylan.
We live in a combination of Brave New World, 1984, and pretty much every book on this list
jason8ification much more 451. The whole life of the moment full of inconsequential things that don't really matter, knowledge and literature fading slowly. Nuclear war on the horizon, and politics becoming about who looks better, or haas better marketing/ can insult the opponents netter all fit that theme
It's hard to take religion seriously when they see Harry Potter as a threat.
they are a series threat to rational thought and freedom.
I am too religious, but not to the point where I should ban thing, because I think it's probably satanic. Because of that nutsacks, good religious People cannot be seriously taken today.
It's why I can understand atheism, agnosticism and secularism.
I'm 13 and have read half of these, their good books, but people get mad when I tell them I read them because I'm "young and easily influenced". I'm sorry, I read American Psycho but am I going around killing people? I've read huckleberry Finn, but am I going around calling all black people the n word? My ELA teacher had huckleberry Finn in his bookshelf for anybody to read, and didn't say a thing when he saw me reading it, he just minded his own business and let me read the book I wanted to read. Be Mr. Cooper.
Future suggestions, Johnny got his gun, Slaughterhouse five and anything else by Vonnegut, the Color Purple. Banning books always makes me want to read them to find out why. Particularly when I was your age. Curiosity may occasionally kill the cat but more often than not, satisfaction brings her bag. Keep thinking!
Wha
good for you, read the books, but always be mindful of the context in which they were written. If the book is banned, you know its probably gong to be good.
I own Huck Finn. I love it.
Mein Kampf.
Why do religious groups overreact about things that aren't harmful? My parents didn't want me to watch Harry potter because of our religion, there is nothing wrong with it.
Because it makes you question.
I get it with 4-7 but the others dont make sense
For whatever reason(s), they think it could be 🤷♀️ Idk
But where you allowed to read Narnia and Lord of the Rings?
While I’m watching Nightmare on elm street while I’m 10 year old
Most of these novels are so beautifully written. And were made to be questioned and thought provoking.
On the Harry Potter series, I'm sitting here as a Christian thinking "This is bad how?" XD
Too many idiots give us a bad name .-.
Dillon McKinney exactly! we do good! show the good not bad!
I read the Harry Potter series on the advice of a friend. He got the books to encourage his kids to read. I read 8 books and never once was I tempted to swear allegiance to the dark lord. There's a lot of education in those books (author did her research) and most millennial kids that I know have read them

Wasn't To Kill a Mockingbird banned at some point? that was a good book
I think it was in some school libraries. I remember that there was this high school that wanted to do a stage production of To Kill A Mockingbird but the production got banned on account of the racial slurs in the book.
It still is, in some places.

Catcher in the rye made my sophomore year a living hell, it’s so goddamn depressing.
It's a good book, but my God Holden Caulfield is the absolute worst! He's such a whiny little pissant!
I think Fahrenheit 451 definitely deserved a spot on that list. There's nothing more ironic than a heavily censored book about censorship.
It is NOT about censorship. Bradbury said people who think that have completely misinterpreted the book.
RE H When did Bradbury ever state that?
It is NOT about censorship. It's about TV and how it makes people stupid. Ha! TV had nothing to the internet! I wonder what Bradbury would write today.
The Grammar Police that's exactly what The Nazis did, Which is where Ray Bradbury got the idea for Fahrenheit 451 from

I remember reading The Catcher in The Rye in 8th grade, and loving it. I had no idea it was banned until a few years ago. It seems so tame now in comparison to other controversial media.
Where's "The Handmaid's Tale?"
The Catcher in the Rye is amazing. I love that book. The grapes of wrath, lord of the flies, the adventures of huckleberry Finn, and the Harry Potter series were just amazing
"The Giver" by Lois Lowry was banned in the US for depicting infanticide, the same country that keeps abortion legal.
I thought the giver was a great book but there is a huge difference between infanticide and abortion.
@@nbenefiel One kills a child that that is slightly younger.
One of my favorite books that was banned is A Wrinkle in Time. It was banned in Russia and other Communist countries for it criticizing the communist governments.
your top 10 lists are always sooo interesting. Quite a few of those books I read in high school, and I've heard of the rest and this list kinda makes me wanna go read them lol
just ordered some of these, thanks for the suggestions :)
I've read "1984", "Grapes of Wrath" and "Catcher In the Rye" when I was in high school (when 1984 was still in the future), and read "A Clockwork Orange" on my own when my father-in-law gave me his copy. I actually enjoyed all four.
What about 'To Kill A Mockingbird', that was banned a lot throughout the sixties and even the seventies.
Really!
thnk u so much....i was searching for this frm a pretty long tym
So, it's the good books they ban. Huckleberry Finn? Really? It's a classic. And Harry Potter? It's a children's book. I'm not making the argument that it doesn't capture the imagination of adults, that's not what I'm saying. But, it's still a kids book. Why are they so frightened of a kids book? Magic? Creation out of nothing? In all that time it amazes me that no one has ever tried to ban the Bible. Not that we should. We shouldn't ban any book. They're words. How can we be so frightened of words?
Paul TheSkeptic because somebody might get offended and god forbid that.
Bob Cemore Right. Oh no, don't let them be offended.
Harry Potter got banned because the kids are preforming witchcraft which is seen as the Devil's work. Hence, the reason why. Hell, just Google 'Catholic Church and Left-handedness'. Some religious folks are just crazy. But not all of us, my church was fine with it.
Words can be *very* powerful, you know.

It’s for entertainment and no one teaches it in schools
Because it's shit enough not to advise it. Thankfully the novelty has worn off and the only copies are in charity shops.
I just packed “1984” into my bag because I’m going to read it with my english class tomorrow. Nice stuff I’m learning while I should be asleep...
i remember reading that book for school i think it was high school found it a very odd story. it shouldn't of been banned but it wasn't for me not that i had a choice
About half of these books were assigned reading when I was in school in the 1970s and 80s. Most of the rest weren't published yet, but I've always used the Library Association's Banned List as a guide for my "to be read" pile.
'Lord of the Flies' makes me think of the Stanford Prison Experiment.
It's kinda funny how most of these books i've read due to them being assigned in my U.S. public schools... ironic in some senses
The Catcher in the Rye and Brave New World are two of my favorite books, and Lolita is on my list to read
I was in a book store a few days ago and found a copy of Mein Kampf in the history section. Always thought that would be a weird experience at the check out.
Thanks to you guys, I now have a brand new reader's list to look forward to!
I'm 68 years old and an avid reader. The Catcher in the Rye is without a doubt the best book I've ever read. That book is so funny it was hard to keep from wetting my pants. It's very hard to believe it still gets banned in places today, it's almost 2020 for Christ's sake!!!
Thanks for the reading list.
"I've gotta return some videotapes" + "We're gonna need a bigger boat"...
I *loved* Brave New World and Lord of the Flies. Not to mention the Harry Potter series.
I read Catcher in the Rye a few years back and really enjoyed it. Oddly, it's a book about nothing in particular, but it's a real page turner. "Teenage angst" in full force.
1984 is a cool book, too. Lots of symbolism. One of those books that makes you think. The few movie versions out there don't do it justice. It's very well written.
I remember reading Catcher in the Rye and Hesse’s books in high school. They changed my life.
I've read three of these books-Lord of the Flies in Middle School, 1984 senior year of High School (It increased in popularity due to the outcome of the 2016 Election), and the Harry Potter novels as a child. I found it interesting there are places where these books are banned.
Catcher in the Rye ftw! that book means so much to me, read it in high school before having to run away at 16... ended up going through what Holden went through. the book meant alot :)
The 1984 version of 1984 featured Richard Burton in a posthumous role.

My only criticism of Huck Finn and Catcher in the Rye? They aren't written in Standard English. Teachers constantly preach learning to write in Standard English, and then they assign us these books to read, which does not help us get better in our writing mechanics!
I think we have the book 1984 in our classroom
7:16 and yet readily available on netlfix!
The Catcher in the Rye has always been probably my favorite book of all time. You either love it or hate it, and each time I have read it I get something different out of it.
Good list. I'll have to do some re-reading.
wasn't the Golden Compass/ His Dark Materials series banned because of the religious themes? If so, it should have been on this list.
Condemned by certain Catholics and churches, but I'm not it was ever actually banned.
I am currently reading Lord of the Flies.
It's really depressing and sad. But okay for me.
Never thought of Catcher in the Rye as a book whose content warranted banning, even in the ultra-censored 1950s. It was a required book in high school English. Lolita is an awesome book if you can stomach some of the descriptions of love scenes between Lolita and Humbert (but don't skip unless you ABSOLUTELY MUST). The descriptions of late 1940s life the scenery makes the book a great piece of literature. If you want to watch the better film adaptation, watch Kubric's 1962 film. It is more like the original book because Nabakov was a consultant on the film. It was originally rated X because of the depiction of the relationship (probably appropriate for 1962). Grapes of Wrath was another surprise.
It is good to have an area like this “fetching lobon only” (Google it) where you can discover and read most of the books. It possesses a user-friendly interface and there are no errors and mistakes in any way. Book enthusiasts would absolutely uncover this source beneficial. Possess a really wide selection too. Anyone else think the catcher in the rye is overrated?
Charbel Chidiac I wish there was a way to like this comment more than once.

I haven't read 1984 (yet), but am quite amused to learn from this that there was a movie adaptation released in, well, 1984!

I'm really ashamed to say it, but my religious parents banned Harry Potter from me for the same reasons. They now know it was a stupid, pointless thing to do, but it ruined any chances that I had of enjoying the series.
My mom did the same thing. For awhile, she wouldn't let me read my copy of the first book until my former councilor recommended that she should let me read the books. She did finally let both my sister and I read the series when I was a sophomore in high school (though there were a couple of times that she did let the both of us read the first book for school).
