Tolkien basically invented the way of proper and detailed world creation with LotR. Anything but #1 would've just disregarded the importance of those books.
But I gotta say that "A Song of Ice and Fire" not only competes with Middleearth in terms of scope, but it also goes far more into detail. Tolkien tells us in the "Lord of the Rings" that Aragorn ruled Gondor for many years to come and that he was a good king and died in the year so and so.
GRRM not only tells you those things in "A Song of Ice and Fire", but he would also tell you of Aragorns tax policy. Did he maintain a standing army? What did he do in times of flood and famine? And what about all these orcs? By the end of the war, Sauron is gone but all of the orcs aren’t gone - they’re in the mountains. Did Aragorn pursue a policy of systematic genocide and kill them? Even the little baby orcs, in their little orc cradles?
GRRM just goes into such incredible detail, he is foreshadowing coming events, past events, present events and hints at events that might happen or might not happen. That's why even years after the books came out, people still discuss about all kinds of theories and keep looking for clues between the lines because there is almost always something to find between the lines.
And let's not forget the characters. Some are annoying, some are cool, some are super bitches, some are super dark, some are funny, some are evil, but all of them are grey (except some extreme ones). There are things to like about the most evil ones, or you can at least see where they're coming from or why they are the way they are (even Joffrey) and even those you love have bad or evil qualities.
And Martin has probably the biggest pool of great, strong female characters.
I just love these books to death. It's vast, it's complicated, it's engaging and intense, but also very fluid and comfortable to read. Just don't get scared off by the size.
You= Genius
***** yeah
***** I can see the appeal, but I still think LotR created a more beliavable world of fantasy, every letter is put with some thought and consideration. For sure it doesn't talk about politics at the same level Martin did, also sexuality, but in terms of the creation off aa world, it's , at least for me, more beliavable, because everything is well written, thought and put in the history.
I am a bit biased, because the Game of Thrones show, makes me feel sick and anxious in a way I don't like and don't feellike watching.
maurih1games Well, let's define 'believable' for a second :D
I haven't gotten around to buying them yet but there is a 12 book collection of the history of middle earth, from the creation of Arda (earth) to the end of the third age, I think one of the books is about what happens after the war so I think it's a safe bet to say a lot of detail would be found in this, I have read some stuff on wiki sites but not much on Aragon's rule but I have read about what happened to the others. :)
I'm so happy that you left off Twilight. :)
Who isn't??
Couldn't even get past the first paragraph, horrible writing.
That song by Paramore was actually better than the whole book series
+C Aramir
+C Aramirdan Urrrgh Twilight suks
Who else knew LOTR would be #1
It better have been.
Meeeee
@Izabella Straka Bahahhahaha
The Hobbit should have been somewhere.
Yeah me
This list with LOTR at the top makes it perfect.
@cody coughlan in which way bro? and these two series cannot be compared because of the difference in genre harry potter is not epic fantasy
@@kaneabd1217 because LOTR set the trend. Modern fantasy wouldn't exist as we know without it. So how could anything else possibly be at the top...
LOTR is not just the best selling book of its kind, it's one of the best selling books of all time.
It is the Best
The movies were spectacular. The books were good. The plot was amazing, the Universe was exciting, but the characters were stoic, lofty and not particularly relateable.
Dragonlance follows LOTR as the second best of all time. The Twins Trilogy needs to be made into a Movie, with Dragons of Autumn Twilight Trilogy but maybe a Series would do it more justice
Excuse me. But how much do you think the LOTR books got?? Only 150 mil. Harry Potter got around 400 mil. And it's only 20 years old. And by the way on average HP still beats LOTR. And by the way HP is better. For one thing It has moral complexity of which LOTR has none (with one exception, Gollum, who has more of a split personality disorder then moral complexity). And one more thing. By the number of male and female characters in LOTR it looks like 99.99% of mans are gay.
+Mircea Donciu You got it wrong. All Harry Potter books combined sold over 400 million copies. One book on average sold around 70 million copies. As for the LOTR, they sold 150 million copies as a whole TRILOGY. Which means that all three books combined sold over 450 million copies. Plus the Hobbit which also sold 150 million copies. That combined is 600 million books. Don't get me wrong though. I love Harry Potter.
Best way to describe this list. A list of top ten fantasy books, compiled by people who dont read fantady books.
morning morality middle earth will probably always stay number one, simply because most see it as the creation of modern fantasy, regardless of it being in the current spotlight or not.
But yea this is certainly a popularity list more over a quality of series thing.
In your opinion which books should be on the list? I don't need you to put them in an order just a little list, I'm interested in it, if you can spare some time.
well said they didnt even mention Terry Goodkind...
For people who stumble on to these comments, there is one top dog in epic fantasy; Malazan book of the fallen. The book isn't on this list, I guess cuz it never got tv adaptation or popularity in masses
Couldn't have said better. They ranked Harry Potter above Wheel of Time and ASOIF, it was outrageous. The only ranking they got correct is LOTR at 1.
When I saw the thumbnail, I thought 7 of the 10 books were Harry Potter 🤣
Lol
@@jacobanimations5159 😂😂
I mean why not?
And the rest Lotr
After so much Rick Riordan, i wouldn't just say that Percy Jackson and the Olympians is his most famous series. All of them are legit an entire series. Percy Jackson, Kane Chronicles, Heroes of Olympus, Magnus Chase, and Trials of Apollo are all in the same world. Kane Chronicles had the crossover with Percy Jackson at last, and Magnus is related to Annabeth from Percy Jackson. I'd just consider everything an entire series and each title just different arcs with different main characters.
magnus is related to annabeth, jack tries to hit on anaklusmos. . . yeah its related alright :P😅😅😅😅
I will forever so Rick riordan is a terrible writer
@@tripiriornewmand6310how so
Really? No Kingkiller? No Dresden Files? No Mistborn? No Malazan? No Drizzt? I could go on...
This video should be titled 'Top 10 Most Popular Titles', although personally, I'd favor Sanderson's Stormlight Archives over Mistborn.
Ichigo Kurosaki Dresden files is popular. It had a (bad) tv show adaptation and the latest book was nominated for a Hugo award.
Joseph Fernandez Ah. I haven't heard of it until now. I think I'll pick it up now. If it's bad (The TV show), it probably means it's not that popular? I'm merely guessing
I knew Malazan wouldn't be on here, even though it is my favourite one by far.
you just mentioned pretty much everything I am missing on this.
To all of you all dissing Harry Potter:
I honestly could not care less whether or not people like the series. It's your opinion whatever. But HP definitely belongs on the list. I mean I know it may seem pretentious of me to say so, but HP largely impacted practically an entire generation. A lot of people grew up with HP and it got a lot of people into reading. For those of you who argue that "it's too simple", well... I mean it IS targeted towards a younger audience so what did you expect? However, that being said there's also just something so magical about HP. It's just filled with lots of wonder. It's light-hearted and there are a lot of important themes and messages intertwined throughout the series.
Maybe I'm sounding really corny but I don't know I guess I just wanted to give my two cents.
Yo!!!! Who is saying hp is too simple? I wanted to get into hogwarts and my dad killed my dreams by saying that everything is just green screen HP 4evr!
+Sophie Luvs Books I agree over all Harry Potter is amazing.
It is the best book of course I love harry potter like you
+Sophie Luvs Books I'll throw your own words back at you. Most of us could care less what you think, It's an Opinion, if people hate it then they hate it.
Your words don't matter and it won't change our opinions of the books.
+skrishna3 Didn't think that my words would matter to everyone. Is it so wrong of me to defend a series that I love?
J.R.R. Tolkien had started it all. Considering him as the father of modern fantasy, many authors like George R. R. Martin, admired his work and is also inspired to write ‘A Song of Ice and Fire’. Most importantly, Tolkien is the one author to rule them all. He deserved it.
We wouldn't even have this list if it weren't for LOTR
So true.
Absolutely true
I think the biggest problem is it ignores books/series that have never been made into a movie or a TV show of some kind.
David Eddings, Roger Zelazny, Anne McCaffery, Marion Zimmer Bradley....
...just to name a few. No film they can show, pass it over.
They bring up both Pratchett and Gaimen, but their greatest work was a collaboration that's never been brought to film.
They also seem to ignore urban fantasy altogether. And I'm surprised the grandfather of all fantasy wasn't mentioned: Jonathan Swift.
I was very happy they included Pratchett though. For some reason he's often overlooked, and his fantasy has some of the best character development ever written, as well as some of the best humor.
Exactly
I agree with you. But kinda off topic here, do you think PJO should've been more than an honorable mention ?
Perhaps. That isn't the point of the post though. I think they left some very good books/series out of the list just because of a lack of film to run with it.
It's not a bad list, and everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just would have had a bit more respect for it if they had included one without film.
My thoughts exactly. Any fantasy-enthusiast will disagree with this list, as some of the greatest works are not even mentioned eg. Steven Eriksson and Ian Esslemont. And though Harry Potter is a very nice Children’s book, it just does not belong at the top of this list, if at all.
What you are saying is so true! A good list but when you are only looking at ten ''books'' it's hard to get all that is out there. I was very glad they included Terry Pratchet as his works are awesome and LOTR deserves number 1.
But I'm with you I love Mercedes Lackey, Anne McCaffery and David Eddings. It ignores some of the best fantasy authors around, though I am glad that the wheel of time was included. That series was one of my favourites growing up too.
Personally:
1 The Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit
2 A Song of Ice and Fire
3 Harry Potter
Well, A Song of Ice and Fire is not easy book to read in short amount of time. It seems like I need to give at least a week to finish just Game of Throne... I have to understand all clans, characters, and their relationships...
For me...
1.harry pottah
2.hairy potter
3. Harry Potter

1.witcher
2.a song of ice and fire
3.lord of the rings
@Imaan Stone or The Wheel of Time

LotR rightfully at the top. I've seen this analogy, and I think it's very accurate- JRR Tolkien's work is like Mount Fuji to the fantasy genre. Fantasy authors inevitably either have Mount Fuji painted in the background, or they're standing on top of it, or they've made a deliberate choice to exclude it completely, which in itself is interesting. Either way, JRR's work will be of influence one way or another.
With any luck, my fantasy books will be on this list one day.
Good luck! :)
John Petrinolis Good luck! I’ll buy a signed copy 💯

Young Teens / Older Teens = Lord of The Rings and The Hobbit
Older Teens / Adults = A Song of Ice and Fire
+Miker0 Rants Me = All of this.
really what's with these people arguing that HP is like the best book ever, I actually think that a song go ice and fire should have been nº 2 and not HP :/
but that's just my opinion
Where is Eragon ? Isn´t it popular in England or America? man i loved these 3 books and they werent even honourbal mentions?!
Not very popular after the forth made most fans want to burn the books
Marcus Rossi why
jack Johnson the galbatorix fight was awful, the answer to his powers and hos eragon grows is awful. How no main characters ended up unhappy for no good reason was awful. Pretty much everything in the final chapters was just bad
Marcus Rossi
Don't forget the horrible writing, describing details that are not significant to the stories.
I don't mind details but putting so much that it takes a whole paragraph to describe one thing, is just bad writing in my opinion.
One question, is the 4th book really that bad? I'm about to read the third book, and I'm kinda struggling in trying to find motivation in finishing the second book (only about 100 pages away).
The thing I don't get why can't the author just stick to the things that matters like Stephen King's books. No need to describe a room in complete details, from the walls, chairs, tables, and whatever the fuck is inside the room, when the main character is going to leave and not going to be part of the story anyway.
darklyger64
the forth book isn't that bad, the end is a bit rushed.
paolini should have made a fifth book that would have tied up the story in an better way
Change title to “Top fantasy books that are also movies” because none of these hold up to WoT, Stormlight, First Law, Kingkiller, Mistborn, Malazan
Haha youre my man. Malazan in my opinion the best of these but all of them are great
WoT is also in the list.
Dune
While I agree I feel like you'd have to just include all of sanderson's works as one otherwise it's just be half the list.
Kingkiller and stormlight are so good, I have yet to read the other ones but am hoping to get to them soon
Seeing LOTR and Harry Potter in the Top 3 just put a smile on my face.
Which is better but i am confused between both of them but my opinion is lotr
@@kamalasingh7202 lotr and asoiaf are way better
There's ASOIAF also
Haven't finished the video yet but if The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss isn't on here, I'm gonna start flipping chairs.

Is that the one where the guy get's really fat?
Elizabeth La he definitely deserves to be on this list...
Honestly, best books I have ever read
Totally agree!
The Bible should atleast have an honorable mention.

A Song of Ice and Fire
Best book series (in my opinion) and has the best TV show adaptation ever
@@LucasBR702 then season 5 happend you mean... Or do you serios think that season 5,6,7 are good?
@@LucasBR702 okay yeah thats true. Like hold the door.
okay season 5 was a great season... 1 - 4 perfect 6 was good and had the best action sequences out of all which made it a great season. 7 and 8 are where you can say it went too shit..
@@ruthlessko2034 it went to shit in season 5
Certainly not the best, but it was great. Could've been the best if GRRM finished the books, and D&D didn't get lazy and rush the series. It definitely cannot defeat LOTR and Harry Potter, both in the books and the movie adaptations.
The Witcher should’ve been top 5 at the least. My personal list would’ve been:
1. The Witcher
2. A Song of Ice and Fire
3. Lord of The Rings
4. Narnia/Percy Jackson
5. Harry Potter
Thanks I’m using this list for books to read
I strongly disagree. I would never consider putting percy jackson anywhere near the top 10. His dark materials is definitely my number 1.
the percy Jackson books are one of my favourite book series. the movies were a complete disaster
same for the hobbit movies they were absolute garbage
+Katie Mossman You a %100 percent correct though atleast LOTR and Harry Potter did excellent.
Yeah there were a few things left out but not enough for the movies to be bad
the hobbit wasn't that bad.
the first two movies were good but the last one is a bit mediocre
Game of Thrones(ASOIAF) and the LOTR trilogy(not The Hobbit, stretched into three movies for money) are about the only ones that have been good in both mediums. I guess you could say the Harry Potter ones as well, based off of others reactions but I never read those books. Same with Outlander, I guess. Narnia movies were OK, I guess. Would love a great Discworld series. I know American Gods is supposed to be good but I do not have Starz and also, it was one book, dunno how they are stretching that to multiple seasons. Stardust was a decent translation to screen. Princess Bride was a great translation to screen. The Shannara show on Sci-Fy is kinda meh. Gonna stop now, before I list every book or series of books.
Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss is going to be top 10 when the Kingkiller Chronicle is finished.
Kingkiller Chronicle should be no.1
Hanzo, once they make it as a film, it well might be.
Sadia, it might be pretty high, but it will not overcome Profesor Tolkien. After all, he is a father of this genre and did damn good job.
A tv serie is apparently in production.
Kvothe is the most pretentious name in all fiction.
Personally:
Lord of the rings
Silmarillion
Fall of Gondolin
Unbiased I know
And you’re totally right
And beren and luthien and unfinished tales
I personally would put Silmarillion to 1.
My top 5
5. LoTR
4. ASOIAF
3. The wheel of time
2. The kingkiller chronicles
1. The stormlight archive
what is your no 4 ?
@@conniecarroll7222 a song of ice and fire
I've read both the Kingkiller chronicles and do not get the hype the main character is an egomaniac who is telling a story of his youth where he is ment to be well the shit! He never does anything really worth of note. Then when the 2nd book ended I'm sat like what is this it?
After all the hype I'd been given regarding this series as a whole. After it I read the Iron druid chronicles and it was much better.
I hope the 3rd book if the utter twat of an author drops the book is worth the wait

How the fuck can you put Harry Potter above A Song of Ice and Fire?! Harry Potter is a book series for children who doesn't know better storytelling, written by an arrogant woman who thinks she's created some genre transcending book series, when they are about as generic as fantasy comes (bring on the hate, I don't care). I don't mind The Lord of the Rings (they are some of the best movies ever, that's for sure), but Harry Potter is a joke in comparison to A Song of Ice and Fire. It's like putting Batman (1989) above The Dark Knight in terms of Batman films; one is clearly better and more grounded than the other. A Song of Ice and Fire is storytelling at it's finest, with interweaving, incredibly well thought out story lines, fleshed out characters and insane amount of lore. If anything, A Song of Ice and Fire is genre defying, since it breaks away from the generic good-vs-bad storytelling that has been done to death in fantasy, and that he (GRRM) is willing to kill off good characters, instead of some generic good-vs-evil mess about a boy who defeats a mustache-twirling dark lord (*eye rolling*) who has zero motivations for his actions. I still don't understand how George R.R Martin didn't get the HUGO award for the masterpiece that is known as A Storm of Swords, over Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
I completely agree with you especially the Hugo for a storm of swords best book ever but I think that when the whole series is complete it will finally be number one
Michael Snow I think so too. There's quite literally nothing like it. Everything else pales in comparison. After you've read the books and/or watched the show, everything else that you watch or read gets worse. It's good on a whole another level.
Nils Engman yes at first when I didn't see game of thrones I always said it sucked without giving it a chance cause I got mad because I saw it number 1 in lots of things then I gave the show a shot and from the first scene I've been totally hooked and can't stop loving it now I also read all the books a one of a kind experience you get from the series :')
Michael Snow That's the thing. It's not regular fantasy. It's unique, and fresh. People who normally despise regular fantasy might adore this. You don't have to be a fan of fantasy to like A Song of Ice and Fire or Game of Thrones. You just have to be a fan of incredible storytelling.
Nils Engman yes exactly I've never been a huge fan of fantasy but a song of ice and fire is just different like you said about incredible storytelling which I just love
Not as well known as some of these, but the Stormlight Archive and Mistborn series by Sanderson are fantastic.
YES!!! Someday I think the Stormlight Archive will be more well-known and on a list like this.
It probably won't happen until Stormlight Era 1 is complete though (after book 5)

The Wheel of Time is excellent. It becomes slow around book 8-10 but it's worth reading through because it picks back up. I've read most of the books on this list. The Wheel of Time is my favorite. Also the Night Angel trilogy deserved a spot on this list as well
Patrick Rothfuss is amazing. Also, the Inheritance Cylce is another great series
I honestly think name of the wind is very ovetated, the author took something too big for him and just polished and hid his mistakes. And there is a turkish chicken in a world where turkey doesnt exsist! WTF?!
I'm reading Mistborn now and I love it
So, no King Killer Chronicles by Patrick Rothfuss and Mistborn by Brandon Sanderson?

The Inheritance Cycle! The movie "Eragon" sucked but the books were terrific
Totally agree bro
I lost interest in the series after the first book. I got about halfway through the second book, but I felt like the writing and plot line really lost its momentum from the first book.
Adam Laird Exactly as I'd have said it.
Anna Travis The second one is the most liked one of them all actually, but I guess it´s all personal :)
Adam Laird I enjoyed those books, but I absolutely hated the ending. I won't spoil, but it just ruined the awesome climax for me.
The Chronicles of Narnia is one fantasy world has be underrated... it so Amazing and good. It baffles me that's not more popular.
Harry Potter certainly got me hooked on reading as young man. I'm sure this rings true for many, but as I got older, the books with the more advanced systems of magic really got a grip on me. The Name of the Wind has an intricate system of magic that you can't help but be hooked on if you're a fantasy reader. Of the fantasy books that I've read, it's definitely the first fantasy book I recommend to anybody that asks me.
No The Kingkiller Chronicle ? Not even a honorable mention ?

It's my favorite trilogy ever (Still waiting for the third one though)
Renato Silvano Not really relevant to pop culture or has a movie about it, and quality doesn't really matter to watch-mojo, lol: The golden compass, Percy Jacksson, Narnia, the princess bride?!? ... These are entertaining childrens books but they are far from "masterpieces"
the first law trilogy is another one.
I thinks the series es too new and is not finished
If The Lord of the Rings wasn't first I would never watch Watch Mojo again
You will keep watching WatchMojo
Although I loved it, I don't think it is the best fantasy series. One of the most influential, yes, but not the best. I liked better the Percy jackson and the The Dresden Files novels.
Javier Fernandez sorry, no. The Lord Of The Rings is better than Percy Jackson.
If it weren't for The Lord of the Rings, there wouldn't be any of the other epic fantasy novels.
Glowing Quasar
He did not just write some “fairy tales“. He took inspiration from many fairy tales, legends, sagas and historic events, yes. But he mixed all of that with his own ideas and created a completely new world with lore and history of a magnitude, that is not matched by any other.

Keshav S There is no way Twilight being sci fi. Sci fi is a fictional story that is scientifically accurate. Are you telling me that Werewolves and vampires are scientifically accurate.
A Song Of Ice And Fire should be 2.
Greg Hufton Yep, and it is the only one that has potential to compete with LOTR at number... but first, let GRRM finish it, and I will decide then...
Though I understand that everything and everyone including GRRM was inspired by Tolkien
Giorgi Kelbakiani Ya I think GRRM said his world is just a branch of the world Tolkien created. But lets be real... If we compared the two solely based on the story, intrigue, characters, diversity, themes, suspense, complexity and epicness, which is better? (In my opinion I think A Song of Ice and Fire is)
agree
***** I do agree books 4 and 5 had editing issues because I believe he changed editors or something? But I kind of went along with the dullness of it because really, nothing is in order and never will be after these events. Everyone in the story is now really miserable, damaged, traumatised and well, dull. A lot of people criticise Martin for being overly descriptive like describing what the character had for breakfast. But remember, chapters are written from the POV of characters. So it may not be important to an observer (the reader) but it matters to that character. And I will admit, some part of The Lord of the Rings were rough to get through as well :/
Teebz 1000
Well said
You guys forgot the Bible !!!!
The narrative is horrid and the characters bland, it really doesnt deserve a place on this list.
Yeah your right. The bible is totally fantasy. And what? You believe that randomly on one planet a bunch of rocks luckily containing a bunch of chemicals, randomly smashed together in a way that, by chance, created a cell which randomly just split itself and continued doing this. Meanwhile hot lava cooled down and miraculously started some more chemical reactions that accidentally created water which cooled some of the lava, which randomly a single celled organism was like "I could eat that", didn't get killed, jumpstarted a process where it by crazy circumstances, grew and changed, but each one changed only a little bit so that they could either swim around and kill others who just happened to be there or to crawl on the earth to do the killing. Then some of them turned into dodo birds, but the lucky ones got turned into apes. Who then were like my spine hurts, and turned into humans and somehow we all survived an ice age and when all the dinosaurs died, we can't explain that but oh well "Science for the win!", we also managed to figure out a penis goes in a vagina by sheer dumb luck. Then we tried and tried until something came out of us, but we knew to cut off the umbilical cords. Thats basically a breif summary of how we got here. Oh and by the way the universe is infinite and was created by a big explosion with nothing existing before that except a scientifically provable (right?) ball of all the universe scrunched together floating in nothingness which totally existed.
Jonathan Alvarez nah it sucks..
1. The Lord of the Rings
2. A Song of Ice and Fire
3. Harry Potter
now thats how it should be
Marco's Movies you know lord of the rings is on top because of the silmarillon
My top 5:
1. The Wheel of Time
2.The Stormlight Archive
3. A Song of Ice and Fire
4.Blah blah blah
5.blahblahblah
I already watched all, LoTR is still my number 1
@Chuck Buskee lotr is the goat. Nothing more needs to be said
Lol that's actually my top 3
Just wait until we get the show, it will reach its pinnacle
All hail to the king who created Middle Earth, create new language, and new species. All hail to J.r.r. Tolkien
J.k.Rowling did that too she created a wizard world. She created magical creatures. She created the language of snakes. She created amazing character. And also Harry Potter sold 450 million copies and the lord of the rings sold 150 million copies. I'm no math genius but the last time I checked J.K.Rowling sold way more than the author of the lord of the rings
Yes 150 million copies sold when it first published in 1954-1955 after the world war 2. And it's still the top 1 best selling book after the hobbit! And yeah those creatures where did she get them from? In Greek mythology?
Language of snake mäni ã amada
Ernesto Chavez Jk Rowling created language of snakes? Did she created alphabets and script and philology and vocabulary and a dictionary and poems in that language like Tolkien?
Ernesto Chavez There are also 9 Harry Potter books to Tolkiens 3 part Lord of the Rings books, but Lords is one solid book and it is treated as such. One book that sold 150+ copies is impressive seeing how it came out a little over half a century ago and is regarded by many authors included Rowling as their inspiration for writing.
The real question is which Harry Potter book sold the most? Because if you're going off everything LoTR has grossed over more than 1 billion dollars.
Worth mentioning: The Mists of Avalon, The Earth Sea Series, The Belgariad Series, Age of Darkness Series (Hugh Cook), Chronicles of Prydain, The Bartimaeus Trilogy, The Thomas Covenant Series.
I see comments of beginning authors claiming that they are trying to write their books, and that they hope their books end up in this list.I am the same one! I get shivers down my spine when i see these people trying to write their stories, and i wish them the best of luck!
The wheel of time will always be my favorite. As a big fantasy fan that even delves into d&d, both books and the game, the wheel of time outshines everything especially over Harry Potter and lord of the rings. Wot is 10X of what those have to offer
I think saying it outshines lotr is an absurd stretch but i do think it's much better than HP and should've been 3rd on this list behind asoiaf and lotr
Lord of the ring is in first place and that how it should be i haven't watched wheel of time so i cannot judge your comment
So its not just me. Doesn't Rand Al'thor's journey just seem so much better than Frodo's?
RJ Papay I haven’t watched it so I’ll withdraw my comment.
Wheel of Time is far too bloated imo. Decent world building though.
Percy Jackson should have been properly on the list. I feel like you were judging it by the movies. The _awful movies that deserve to be thrown into Tartarus._
Malamute456 exactly that's what i said they are judging them by their movies, the books were amazing and the movies were nothing like them so ya throw the movies in Tartarus :)
Malamute456 Lord of the Rings was the only good movie on there, that I know of. And The Hobbit, of course. Like I said, that I KNOW of for now.
I don't think Percy Jackson was really fantasy, though. It is more of a mythology. Hands down, if someone asked what Fantasy was, I would tell them: Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit, and Tolkien, the legend of it all.
I guess, yeah. I don't know a lot about Greek Mythology, so yeah XD.
+Malamute456 Yeah I was actually amazed that the Wheel of Time was on the list since most of the list seems to be "Top 10 Fantasy Books that have been made into Movies"
I try to base my Fantasy reading on this list www.reddit.com/r/Fantasy/comments/30h21n/the_2015_top_rfantasy_novels_of_all_time_poll/ and so far I haven't been disappointed. I'm not reading it in order though, I've read Harry Potter, The Wheel of time, Mistborn, The Stormlight Archive, and The Dresden Files. I actually only found the list recently as you can see because it has 2015 in the name, but it at least has my favorites in it :)
I am a fan of Harry Potter (since I grew up with it) but one does not simply talk shit about Lord of The Rings
Amen
Yay
Imaan Stone Harry Potter has a lot more relatable characters
Imaan Stone I feel like Harry Potter deals with more regular things your likely to go through like in the 5th book with loneliness and depression
Un Named So does LOTR
I'm writing my fantasy hope one day it will top the list.
All the best dude👍
This is just my opinion
1. The Hobbit
2. LOTR(yes they both deserve a spot)
3. The Dark Tower
4. Harry Potter
5. Mistborn
6. The Ranger's Apprentice
7. American Gods
8. Percy Jackson
9. Narnia
10. The Wheel of Time
If lord of the rings doesn't make number 1 imma flip
Well then we are lucky it did because it most definitely deserved it
Connor Jordan Honestly, I think A Song of Ice and Fire takes the cake.
Robotanng Not yet. If they make the list again when A Song Of Ice and Fire is complete than it might be different.
Robotanng Lord Of THe Rings kind of started the modern fantasy genre, it's hard to argue against it being #1. One may argue wich book is better written or has better characters, but LOTR is definitely more influential.
R0DisG0D Yeah, no doubt that LotR influenced nearly every fantasy book made after, but its not the best made, although it is up there!
Discworld should say 1983-2015. Terry Pratchett died recently
There is the possibility that there are other, already written, novels that haven't been published yet. We're getting one later this year (the fifth Tiffany Aching novel) and there may be more so... we can only hope. =)
ok i stand corrected
He died? Im surprised I didn't know this I have about 50 of his books lining a shelf.
Westhegaminglich he past last month
I was literally gonna throw a tantrum if the Percy Jackson & The Olympians series wasn't at least an honorable mention in this list.
But you guys have saved yourselves one angry viewer.
Those books were good but it is debatable if it’s really fantasy in the classical sense
@@theonethatexists4441 It's urban fantasy
@Kian Dianati just imagine the movies of all these books were not made.
Then this list would hav percy jackson . The heroes of Olympus and percy jackson are great series of books
Top 3 are all masterpieces! TLotR books are my alltime favorites! Game of Thrones is still my favorite TV series after 7 years and Harry Potter was my childhood!
Hopefully the asoiaf books finish eventually
Lmaoo harry trash is trash.
@@tinalovre No you are trash idiot
Um, personal opinion, Percy Jackson is one of the book series that really got me into the fantasy genre.
Also, The Blood of Olympus was excellent.
I haven't finished reading the blood of Olympus yet
Percy Jackson got me Into long books
Assassin Killa9 how? Those books are short...
The PJO series in general are actually my favorite books... but.. the movies... Oo
Percy Jackson have such amazing books but the movies are so bad!
EXACTLY. I remember seeing The Lightning Thief on TV and I loved it... so I read the book... then watched the movie again....
God the movie sucks....
@@cggaming8373 I enjoyed the first movie so does that mean I'll love the book
@@owenkidd3996 Trust me. You'll hate the movies after you read it... or not, lol
JK Rowling:Nobody can make serious character dramas like me.
Terry Goodkind:Oh, please...
CGgaming Owen Kidd I’ve read all series and also the movies of Percy Jackson, It was very good, but I know it is different, but I still like it
A song of ice and fire is a favorite of mine as well
This seems like a list for fantasy with the most media coverage rather than best fantasy novels. This list should include Kingkiller Chronicles, Stormlight archives and Mistborn, Gentlemen Bastards, and The First Law trilogy to name a few. Harry Potter was my childhood but it does not belong so high in this list. Tolkien will always have a special place in fantasy literature but his writing is actually rather dull. The world he created is better than the books themselves.
Prydain, Dark Is Rising, A Wrinkle in Time...the Damiano series
+Milo O'Rourke...compare with harry vs lort!!! like mouse vs dragon...lort best fantasy books all of them...
I agree so mucb
Lol Kingkiller Chronicles, sick meme my lad.
Yeah but not only is every fantasy series listed in the video really good theyve also had the most impact on culture and influence on future authors. I doubt whether a lot of fantasy series wouldve even been written if the authors hadnt read series The Chronicles of Narnia and The Hobbit/The Lord of the Rings as children.
I swear if inheritance isn't on here!
SuperLucarioSunshine DAMMIT!
SuperLucarioSunshine IKR I was going to comment about that, too!
SuperLucarioSunshine ikr this is ludicrous
thought the same
was hopeing for a honnerable mention but ah well
The Inheritance Cycle is the best.
I agree but maybe not the best, a REALLY great book but not the best no offense intended
Not the best, but It is one of my childhood favorites and a good read despite its flaws.
Are you 10 years old?

The way that dueling is explained in that book is awesome. All the concepts of energy and mental discipline and magic knowledge AND sword fighting ability made it a really well flushed out form of fighting that I love to think about. An honorable mention would have been nice,
10. American Gods
9. Dsicworld
8. The Wheel Of Time
7. The Future King
6. The Chronicles Of Narnia
5. His Dark Materials
4. The Dark Tower
3. Game Of Thrones
2. Harry Potter
1. Lord Of The Rings
Honorable Mentions:
Percy Jackson
The Wizard Of Oz
Outlander
The Witcher
The Princess Bride
The Iliad (Homer)
The Odyssey (Homer)
Watership Down (Richard Adams)
I love J.R.R. Tolkien's books.
Same
me too !!!
So lord of the rings and hobbit
Chryslaire Medina same!!! 💕
lol I feel you are trying to troll Darth Ruin but if not, then you should do some research. Any fantasy book written today draws some influence from his work. J. R. R. Tolkien single-handedly created our modern staple of fantasy.
Not even a mention for Eragon? tsk tsk
Yeah its brilliant. Not to sound like a wuss here but i cried at the end when I realised there would never be another :(
7makosheva Eragon was kind of a fun read, but it is NOWHERE close to any book on this list. The writing was bad, the characters were flat, and it literally contained almost every fantasy cliche out there. If anything, it should be on the most overrated fantasy list.
***** Angela and Murtagh were the best characters. Eragon had a little bit of a backstory but he still was boring to me. As to the writing, it is Paolini is better than E.L. James but not even close to J.K. Rowling. Rowling wipes the floor with Paolini. Paolini is really not that goo of a writer. He uses way too many saidisms. He overly describes pointless, mundane things that mean nothing to the story. The names of his characters and locations sound way too similar to Lord of the rings. His languages are very random and his attempt to create accents is pitiful. He tried way to hard to sound like Tolkien, but in the end he just ended up with way too many smilies that made no sense. Even the first sentence of the book lets you know how bad he is. "Wind howled through the night, carrying a scent that would change the world." What the fuck does that even mean?
Alex Cross Looks like someone is a huge tolkien fanboy
Jago Tlaloc I am by no means a Tolkien fanboy. TLOTR is not even in my top ten favorite series. Why would you say that?
I love how the thumbnail has only Harry Potter books.
Yeah!!!
@@prismmioouu why?
@@bazel1494 there should also be a chance for other underrated books. but its good the chose hp cause its a nice clickbait

Anything written by Diana Wynne Jones.
OH, YESSSSSSSS
SO UNDERRATED
Malazan Book of the Fallen should atleast be in the top 5, but its not even in the honorable mention here :(
#2, as far as I'm concerned, should be it. :
A bit sad at Discworld's placement... but hey, at least it got on the list, so... yay, I guess.
Agree. But it still hurts that Discworld is below Harry Potter.
Kato86 Agree, but its on the list, nothing other matters
przemog88 I agree on that.
I doubt it would have been on the list if he hadn't died so recently.
This list is very casual, so don't take it seriously.
3:08 *Thanos has joined the chat*
13:28 I actually have this LOTR version/cover art of the books
"I will remember those who have been forgotten" - WoR
I can't think of anything better than Words of Radiance
I Agree! The universe that Brandon Sanderson created for is amazing!
I hate that I have to wait so long for the The Stormlight Archive books.
The mistborn novel universe is also one of my favourites, he does a great job at creating laws and rules that govern his worlds.
And I have been reading Harry Potter since KG (2000), so you can't say that I am unbiased towards HP but Brandon Sanderson just swept me off.
+Abhik Biswas I agree Brandon Sanderson is a master story teller
Can't wait for the 3rd book--so good.
I literally haven't read anything better , and I read about a 70-80 new books (novels) each year plus Fanfic .
Eagerly awaiting Oathbringer !!!
How could you compile a list of best fantasy novels without includind 'MALAZAN' series,
i mean ,,,, what tha heck.
i know right. the fact that american gods and wheel of time are on the list but malazan isnt is totally wrong.
Hold up, Wheel of Time, one of the most critically acclaimed and influential fantasy series of all time, and with 2 of some of the best fantasy authors ever, didn’t even make the top 5?
Really at least it’s own the top. 10
My favourite book is Chronicles Of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch And The Wardrobe.
TheWolf FTW same that is my favorite series. My second is Lotr and third is Magnus Chase.
@@dakotatrue12 C S Lewis & J R R Tolkien were friends, so it is only right & proper to love The Chronicles of Narnia, The Lord of the Rings & The Hobbit.

What about Magician by Ramond E Feist.... awsome and has sold millions
I was hoping to see that on the list as well, it's a shame
titmusspaultpaul5 I liked that one, too. But so many characters die. :(
Right!?!?!?!?!?!
Indeed, another missing from here is Dragonriders of Pern, I mean, yeah there are some hugo and nebula winners here, but they gave up giving it to her and just made it a lifetime achievement award...
Agreed. Ramond E Feist is the greatest author of all time. My favorite book of his is silverthorn.
Alright Watch Mojo i am about to watch. Now i see Harry Potter is the thumbnail but i swear to almighty God if you fuck Tolkien over again my furious vengeance will reign down upon you.
Damn straight.
john smith well seeing as LOTR was an honourable mention for top 10 novels of all time it was guaranteed #1
john smith lol who in their right mind would put HP above lotr?
Daenerys Targaryen wtf? LOTR is a novel? how?
MrGameControler I've seen watch mojo claim Star Wars is a better universe than the Tolkien universe followed by people trying to back up this idiocy. I honestly came into this fearing the worst.
I wish Robin Hobb's books were on here. Assassin's Trilogy, Live Ship Trilogy, etc. The world is so great and learning how it interconnects with each trilogy is amazing. Very realistic and gritty.
I love His Dark Materials, it's a masterpiece!
WHERES MISTBORN?!?!?!? On a side note, I thoroughly enjoyed all the books on this list; they were all great!
I was expecting it given that they showed Sanderson's interview for the Wheel of Time series. Also found the lack of Piers Anthony books to be disheartening
Chris Yun or Elantris
Kenzoil Strikesback Wow, I have been struggling with that as well, about Piers Anthony. I don't know if you could call them fantasy in the same way as the books in this list but as philosophy with a magical background. It's kind of the same way that I don't consider Heimlich as a science fiction writer but as philosophy in space.
Chris Yun I had just finished the Mistborn Trilogy and...wow!
Chris Yun ...well fuck, I was more pissed at harry Potter being ahead of the Wheel of Time series, I forgot about that series. I really enjoyed it and that stand alone sequel book
watchmojo please do a top ten young adult books
Edit: Thanks for hearing me out watchmojo

try The Scroll of Kanavar
akash silas YES
If it is made The Inheritance Cycle would have to be on that. And Maybe the Extinction series, but that is more of a adult book, with all of the cussing.
Alex Rider
Lord of the Rings is amazing, pure perfection, Lord of the Rings is the best book ever written in the history of literature
Tolkien’s an amazing writer, best writer ever
No one can even surpass Tolkien
One Ring to rule them all
1. ASOIAF
2. LotR
3. Harry Potter
4. Wheel of Time
5. Mistborn
i knew before watching that harry potter or lord of the rings would be 1 or 2
The watch mojo always making favor for LOTR even they know that the people would prefer HP than that boring LOTR. Watch Mojo sucks!, very unfair!
Texan 55 i understand that i like Tolkien but theres nothing wrong with favouriting other books despite the books achievements compared to other books
Alexis Acosta I think LOTR is better but hey it's just my opinion.
Roger Zelazny's Amber series; Stephen R. Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant, Ursula K. LeGuin's Earthsea...
lesyayandfilksongs i agree with you, but have to add in David Eddings Belgariad
Missing - the Conan series by Robert E. Howard. The Elric, Corum and Hawkmoon series by Michael Moorcock. Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake (the first two novels, anyway). E.R. Eddison's Worm Ouroboros trilogy. Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and Grey Mouser series. Lovecraft is fantasy. Classic beyond classic - The Journey to the East (aka Monkey). Walter Jon William's Metropolitan. Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell by Susanna Banks. Clive Barker's Great and Secret Show, Imaijica and Weaveworld. Jack Vances' Dying Earth cycle. Gene Wolfe's Shadow of the Torturer series.....
Half of your listed authors are men, the list specifically said women. The guys will probably get their own list
In my opinion ASOIAF is 2 and almost 1 based on how deep George RR Martin has gone into the history and world itself
I understand that people like Harry Potter but there is no way you can justify putting it above ASOIAF.
Jim Brown257 This list is created by douchebags, that's the justification.
Even though I like ASoIaF more than LOTR, I can't complain about LOTR's 1st postion simply because of its legacy. But HP above ASoIaF? That's unforgivable.
I don’t know... depends on your criteria. ASOIAF Is one of the greatest pieces of literature from a technical perspective while Harry Potter is trope heavy and just okay at best in its prose. But despite the popularity of GOT TV series bringing Martins work into the mainstream, there is really no comparing the cultural impact and significance of the Harry Potter series. That seems to be an important factor in this and other WM lists. Harry Potter is arguably the more important series. There’s really no denying that. Similar things can be said about Narnia’s inclusion on the list.
Harry potter is about a high school kid wizard with a scar who gets attacked by a man with no nose. And some how that beat ASOIAF. what has this world become.
@@abellasaftey4687 Harry Potter is a middle-grade book and ASOIAF is aimed at adults. You cannot adequately compare the two on the grounds of themes or plot because HP is a book for children. If you want to compare the two, compare their impact on the genre for their respective markets. Aside from the Hobbit, Narnia, and maybe the golden compass, there is no other fantasy series that is even in the same league as Harry Potter in middle grade, while ASOIAF, though good, really has heavy competition. It is also unfinished, and the hype has died down since the last two books were disappointments.
@@joelman1989 mmm you have totally moved to like a book who's villain failed to take over a high school.
My top 10:
10 - Wolfgang Holbein - Enwor books
9 - Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman's first 3 Dragonlance novels (Chronicles)
8 - Lloyd Alexander Taran novels (the disney movie was a bad adaptation)
7 - GRRM Song of Ice and Fire
6 - Robert Jordan et al The Wheel of Time
5 - David Eddings Malloreon Saga
4 - David Eddings Belgariad Saga
3 - JK Rowling Harry Potter
2 - Tad Williams Memory, Sorrow and Thorn Trilogy (!!!)
1 - JRRT The Lord of the Rings (ok, I agree on that one...)
Honourable mentions go to: Raymond Feist, Terry Pratchett, R A Salvatore, Alan Burt Akers, Tonke Dragt, Andrzej Sapkowski...
Ok, maybe they should have made a top 100 ;)
This is the only mention of Memory, Sorrow and Thorn, one of my all time favorites!
Other honorable mentions:
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll
Watership Down by Richard Adams
Dragonriders of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Kingkiller Chronicle by Patrick Rothfuss
as much I love The Dark Tower series, it's not exactly pure fantasy, is it? :D and what about the Sword of Truth series? and btw, The Witcher shouldn't be just an honourable mention :)
What about The Sword of Truth series from Terry Goodkind. It was a great and engaging series. I realise it isn't going to be as high on the list as Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings, but it was great! Also, the Legend of Drizzt series was something I couldn't stop reading.
teknifix please tell me this is some sort of joke? Sword of Truth suffers from the authors preaching, the black and white characters, and the whole "Capitalism is good, Communism is bad" thing.
I loved the Sword of Truth series also! I think it deserved at least an honorable mention. Faith of the Fallen is one of my favorite books of all time! Goodkind has finally returned to the series from what I've read, can't wait to read some new stories from the series.
instinctz1 Your response is kind of a joke. Tell me which books don't preach like it was a Billy Graham sermon? How are these black and white and none of these are? And you kind of missed the point because its not about Capitalism vs Communism. Its kind of shameful that is what you pulled out of it.
That being said, I love this series, one of my favorites, BUT I will admit the middle gets really weak and he does do way to much exposition just for exposition sake.
***** they are great. And the new series Law of Nines is just as good.
instinctz1 to bad you have not read the books or you would know they are about freewill vs.mindless adherence to an idea.
What about the Bible? the highest selling fantasy book of all time!
Its not fantasy.
Formilles3 It has fantasy elements! Like resurrections, miracles, angels, magical creatures, and other sorcery
because it sucks
Ultralquimista To be honest, it's kind of a unique master piece. No book will ever have the same influence this book had ever.
