  • Joining Dr Louise on this week’s podcast is Alex Newman, a substance misuse therapist with a special interest in the menopause.
Alex’s passion is supporting women who are self-medicating menopausal symptoms with alcohol and drugs - a recent survey by Newson Health of nearly 1,200 women found some were spending nearly £3,000 a year on alcohol and over-the-counter medication in a bid to cope with menopause-related symptoms.
The pair discuss the relationship between substance misuse and menopause, and crucially, strategies on how to get help for yourself or a loved one.

HRT made such a change to my mothers life she said she didn’t care if it took 10 years off her life she was never going to stop using it. Her mother died of breast cancer, my mother didn’t care if HRT gave her breast cancer. She would rather live 10/15?years feeling sane than 25/30 years wanting to end her life.

I can't understand that GP saying the pill is so dangerous, have some benzodiazepines and antidepressants instead! WTF! I'm mid 40's, on the combined pill for medical reasons and it scares me that there are health professionals out there who think that!

I have treated perimenopausal and menopausal addiction as a psychologist
Very common, because estrogen deficiency is just like drug withdrawal symptoms.
I had to research so much on this before actually sending them to Gynaec, there not much, but I could tell it's perimenopause.
I had to even educate the gynaec to adjust medications as per the symptoms.
It was unfortunate gynaecs are so rigid in giving standard doses.

I know many women where drugs alcohol in late 30s 40s have becone problematic. All the GPs do is throw them more drugs. I suspect problematic weed use in peri is a bigger issue than is known.
I have a friend who enteted a abusive relationship over lockdown. Has not escaoed and is now a full blown alcoholic. Its so sad.

my wife is bonkers. she sent me this. i'm trying to persuade her to have a video consultation with the newsom clinic and she says 300 quid's a ripoff. she spends more than that a month on cigarettes. hopefully she will do it the worst thing that can happen is we waste 300 quid

I hear a huge lack of self worth. She doesn’t see herself as being worth £300. If you can help her see she is worth it, her relationship with you is worth £300, I’m certain she will thank you.
