Paula Cole , an immensely talented artist that is never fully appreciated or understood. Today's vocalists could not match her range, intensity, timbre or expression. Amazing artist and this song should have been a smash hit. The marketing just wasn't there
The emotion in this performance is what makes seeing Paula LIVE so special. Thank you for this video from 1999.... a song that has even more meaning to me 20 years later.
I cannot believe how friggin good this song is and how I could have possibly missed it all those years ago. And this live rendition is even better than the record I first played. As much as I love "...Cowboys..."...I dunno. True, convincing versatility is very, very rare. Absolutely in awe - and she has easily one of the 5 best female voices post 1990 if not back farther.
I agree. Legendary singer/songwriter. You probably didn't hear it because she never sold out. Warner Brothers wanted her keep making the same type of music, but she released soulful "Amen" instead. Shes the real deal!
Paula Cole singer par excellence. She is classically trained and her range is 5 octaves... Great song writer too... Today's music just can't appreciate this kind of quality
It was on MTV and rock radios too, but 1999 wasn't the same as 1996, if you know what i mean. Also "Amen" wasn't "This Fire", i bought both CDs. But you are right, this song is very good.
WOW. She sounds like her studio albums. Some voices you hear for the first time & you go, “Wow. Wonder what else they’ve made.” That’s how I was when I first heard I Don’t Wanna Wait when I used to watch Dawson’s Creek. Paula Cole’s music is versatile, soft, in your face, melodically soothing. She conveys various emotions & brings her all with whatever song she sings. She has amazing talent & I can’t wait to see what she comes out with next. ❤️❤️❤️
Paula Cole was and is an amazing talent. During this time she was not only gorgeous but had the most beautiful and versatile vocals. There is no other Paula Cole. Pure original.
I saw her live last year and her vocals are still just as strong and stunning. She performed a lot of the "Amen" because I told her how much it meant to me... but that's another story
Typical Paula. So classy at the end here, with her hand wave to acknowledge the band. She looked fabulous, and sounded even better. A star in her brightest light with this Glorious track!
I just love her. She is a trained Jazz singer/musician, isn't she? I would guess that's why I think of a smokey jazz club when I hear and see this performance.
Doug Wimbish on bass in this one. I don’t know that Tony Levin ever did live shows with her aside from the Peter Gabriel tour, but he did play on This Fire. I saw her on the tour for This Fire and Mark Browne was on bass.
I remember when Doug Wimbish played with Jeff Beck! Around the same time he played with Mick Jagger. I saw Doug recently with Living Colour, and also when he did a solo show on and off night. But I might add Paula Cole is a favorite as well, Love her concert, never disappoints!@@mrufino1
Doug Wimbish. He’s amazing- he was the bassist for all of the sugar hill label hits in the early 80’s except for Rapper’s Delight, also played with Madonna, Seal, lots of other people. He’s been in Living Colour for a long time now too.
Amazed this was not a success. What a sublime performance. Live version exceeds the record single in quality. The video for the single was pretty bad. She needed more label and management support.
I remember the stupid Rolling Stones review of this new album really negatively as if Paula was a self righteous preacher with this song, Amen and especially God Is Watching, the album's epic closer. I thought he was so biased and bordering on misogynistic as if a strong prolific female writer and musician can't have an opinion. And also, the studio didn't gave much promotion at all. This after the triumphant This Fire album and Best New Artist Grammy win. ☹️
Agreed that she is a great artist. However, her personal judgment is questionable. Not a good idea to flip the bird to the television audience live at the grammys. Hurts record sales which it did. Her career was not the same after that.
@@ericwaldron3599 She NEVER flipped the bird at any of her live Grammy performances what are you talking about❓It's all here on UA-cam for anyone to see
Ok I never heard that all this time and I'm sure it wasn't that, that cancelled her. She really got bad reviews for the Amen album and it was difficult to get noticed again

Taylor basic swift cannot
To be fair, the sound has changed by 99 with boybands and Britney Christina. But this song is well produced. Her style mixsd with funk.
I never understood why this wasn't a huge hit. The whole album is amazing, as is everything else she has ever done. Such an amazing talent.
Here Here- the Amen album, This Fire, coming off PG tour, she was at her absolute creative peak- made a musical imprint in the nineties...
OMG...SAME!!! Still love this song.
People just wanted a repeat of This Fire. They weren't ready for her evolution.
@@lonellfletcherbut as a fan of her old songs i love this song. Still her sound. Not like Jewel when she released Intuition
SPECTACULAR VOCALS...perfection

A song on the radio brings me here...
Such a great voice . When you can reproduce your vocals so perfectly from the studio to a live setting is the sign of a pure singer .
Oh, how many times I've listened to this song in the last 20 years.
Same. So beautiful.
I don’t know, how many?
saw her in LA on this tour. she closed with Zeppelin's Rock 'n' Roll and haws were on the FLOOR.
The most underrated singer/artist of all time. She is so much more than just a woman...

2020 and this song still great ❤️

Facts. And it’s 2023 for me.
She hit every single note so effortlessly.

Besides Paula at her peak ('nuf said), crackin' band, and really well recorded & mixed. Anyone know the bass player's name? Perfect bass sound.
