Trick For Puffed, Bulging Or Swollen Battery LiPo Cells? DJI Mavic Drone.

  • After the expensive batteries on my drone began to puff up dangerously, I tried a simple trick to extend their useful life.
    ** 2 YEAR FOLLOW UP!!! **
Not only did this trick extend the batteries life, but they actually continued to improve (as far as holding their shape) after repeated cycles.)
Just passing it on to you.
Please use extreme caution if trying this trick, and let me know with a comment if you also had good luck with it?

I work for a drone survey company we use large LiPo and gas powered helicopter drones for survey, and we have several DJI drones including Mavic's, Matrice's, and a huge DJI Flycart. Along with the battery powered UAV's the survey instruments and electronics the UAV's carry are also powered by LiPo batteries, we have literally hundreds of different sized LiPo's stored in our workshop and out with crews working in the field on survey. If any of our LiPo batteries start showing signs of swelling and getting puffy they are disposed of straight away no question even if they seem ok when tested on one of our smart battery chargers, it's just too risky messing around with lithium batteries that are showing signs of aging, the cost of replacing them is nothing compared to the potential cost of the damage that a battery failure or lithium fire can cause.

" let me know if your drone catches on fire LOL" If my memory still serves me, fiery objects in flight seem to be a re- occurring theme in your life Walt! I was folding a plastic dry cleaning bag my wife left on our bed and my mind drifted off to a young Walt Noon in Riverside and the balloon escapades of the 1980's.... Which inspired this search, glad to see you are doing well!

I did a chat with DJI and they replaced my two batteries. I had to give them the serial numbers and take photos of the bulging and then I had to take a video of me soaking them in the salt water. And then two days later they emailed me a discount coupon for two free batteries and you use that at their store. I did this about a month and a half ago. I think they're worried about the bulging batteries and like you said having one pop out and crash the drone.

Is proof of purchase absolutely necessary? I bought my drone used and therefore providing proof is difficult, though I don't see why it matters that I personally bought it. What should matter is that DJI sold it and that would be proven by the serial number.

Just get rid of it, it's not worth crashing the drone or risking your house, car or plane to catch fire during transport. Part 107 drone pilots (if this is the case) and recreational drone pilots should know better, don't tamper or attempt to solve problems with bad products that may endanger someone's life.

Don’t mess with lithium batteries in any way. My apartment went up in flames from a bigger battery (without me doing anything to it in particular, just using the personal electric vehicle in a dynamic way, but no physical impact done), and it’s NOT fun. Thank god nobody died. Having been researching li battery safety a lot, I would say just dispose of them some official way, get a new one, and never tinker with them or force them if you have no idea what you are doing. They can easily catch fire and very badly so. I would’t trade the savings on the price of a new battery for the risk of a violent and possibly deadly fire. That said, even a new battery can catch fire but here there definitely is a sign of deformation so the risk is higher.

I can’t complain. I’ve had my drone for 1.5 years before it start swelling. I have 3 batteries, 2 of them extremely swollen, and one is just a tiny bit.
Now it’s been 5 years how I have it, so I’m scared that they will start fire… DJI should have policy to replace the batteries on half price if You return the old ones… I’ll never buy DJI product again!!!

i think a lot of the bulgin is jus tthe air in the covering getting hot and swelling up..... ive noticed my batterys are swollen when the drone has been flyin gand batterys drain and get hot, leave them to cool down and the swelling goes, this is proof its the trapped air in the covering that causes the problem.

  • @roncnineoneone5632

Not very sage advice I'm afraid. After many years of flying RC planes I can advise, any bulging Lippo batteries should be fully discharged ASAP (below 2.5v per cell) and disposed of. That of course is if you value your aircraft and or Home dwelling. At least keep them in a detached shed.

    • @stancurtin
      @stancurtin  2 роки тому +1

It does seem to be a common problem, as I've seen many complaints. The batteries were a couple years old before this started, so well outside warranty. I don't mean the video to scare anyone off from DJI. The drone is nothing short of phenomenal! The reason I bought from DJI was that I crashed a friend's drone and DJI immediately fixed it and at a very fair price. That took my main fear of buying a drone away! Because, they are expensive, and you know you are going to have crashes. So, the fact they were fair and fast in taking care of my problems made a BIG impression on me. I would give their repair centers an A+, though their communication if you have issues can be slow.

this is extremely dangerous stop doing lol the puffing caused by gases inside of the lipo layers . Li-ion constructed often being able to vent out and built in hard case when case is soft it designed to be able to puff mean no vent even to out so if you push it probably you generate a microhole where the gases escaped if oxygene can go in later it will be a nice firework… It might work until the hole is very small for a while as the airflow is low but in time it is innetiveable if enough oxygen came in a small reaction will elarge the hole and more oxygene will come in an here comes the fireworks. the first thing you should do charge this thing in totally fireproof place lithium burns very high temp it will even damage concrete hard , and if it start in fear you might try to play a firefighter and that will cause more heat as this reaction will be even more hot if you add water the best thing you can do is to extract the battery from the case and insert a new one. I was trying to find tips how to build new bepop batteries as i have the same issue btw with puffing the battery carecteristic also change so it will be failing when you try to pull out more amps . I would like to now if your flat or drone cstched fire already …
