This does not “fix” anything. The reason a battery swells is because the chemicals inside the battery are breaking down. Nobody should do this under ANY circumstances. If your battery is swollen, GET A NEW BATTERY. If you do this, you’re just asking to get your hand blown off.
@Pv Pwner he might be over state it but I bet if it explode the burn can severe enough that it will not heal and the doctor might have to cut some part of the hand to prevent infection :b

The lancing device is calibrated to only penetrate the surface by less than a millimetre (you can typically set the precise depth), and cannot go any deeper than that.

It is hydrogen, I think. Also, under every video of lipo fire there are countless comments about toxic smoke, but it isn't more toxic than burning plastics, wire insulation, etc.
my battery is aluminum. The reason it swells is the lithium puts out many gases when the battery gets very hot, and thus the swelling. Some of these gasses are toxic and flammable.
Tried this the ohter day. Somehow, I just woke up afterwards, when the firemen pulled my out of my burning house. The good thing is, the phone is still working, even with the backplate missing. If you are desperate enough to try this, which is not recommended, use a tooth pick instead of a pin then you have zero chance to F yourself or the battery up. The best solution is to buy a new battery, there's a reason why it swelled up in the first place.
This "fix" worked on a fully charged but badly swollen kg40 cell phone battery. The phone and battery worked fine but the swelling had misaligned the protective case, so it was hard to operate the side controls and to charge the phone. Working outdoors, with the back end of the back phone cover raised and the battery still in place, I put a strip of scotch tape over the center of the swollen battery. Using a toothpick to pierce the battery did not work. The battery membrane was just too tough and the toothpick wasn't sharp or tough enough to do the job! Next, working at a small angle to the battery, I used a sharp needle to make a very shallow tiny pinhole through the tape and membrane. I quickly pressed out the swelling and put several layers of tape over the hole. Very little air, if any got into the battery. It's far too soon to tell how long this "fix" will last, but it is working fine. Yes getting a new replacement battery is inexpensive (about $11 on Ebay), but until the "fixed" battery fails, I won't worry about it. If it fails and I decide to keep my phone, I will replace the battery. Putting in a new battery will actually be much more work then this simple "fix".
but the tape is not strong enough and next time the battery generates gas, it will leak through the tape and will leave a hole there, not only the gas is highly flammable but the opening as you just mentioned will be a way for the moisture to get in.
@@Henry-sv3wv because that is a sign of a battery dying, in the worst case it will blow up no amount of fixes will prevent that and he just did it worse by making away for the toxic gases to go out of the battery.

Congratulations, you just released some gaseous form if the electrolyte (Lithium-hexafluorophosphate), which is like removing some foam formed after serving soda, that foam is soda, if removed you will take less drink. On the battery, it will loose capacity. Sometimes this has reverts (recombines) if you top charge it *properly*.

Batterys DO NOT ignite easily, they are extremely safe and only ignite in very extreme circumstances (such as the circumstance in this video, all it takes is the wrong tilt with that's that pin and he'll be starting some fireworks), if ignited so easily, they wouldn't be in so many phones, laptops, cars, etc. The problem the is when they do ignite though, they can be extremely nasty, especially lithium ion chemistry. In my 15 years of repairing phones and laptops, I've never once had a battery go up in flames, and I've shorted a lot of batteries in my early days. I do agree though, that if you'll be doing something potentially dangerous with, or near a li-ion battery, it's wise to discharge it as much as possible.
The state of the charge does not change the flammability of lithium. Shorting a mobile battery while it is drained is more dangerous than shorting it while it still holds some charge, because 1 - it will not heat up so fast to actually catch fire, you'd have to short it for quite some time, and 2 - Mobile batteries don't have PCB on them and you're essentially going to destroy the battery by making it go under 2.4v. Charger might not even recognize the battery and your phone might no longer charge, but even if that doesn't happen, there are long term damaging effects.

Lithium Ion batteries may catch on fire, they aren't bombs though, and won't "blow up". The "blow up" is merely the lithium gas under pressure. Lithium is kind of like helium but is denser.
Be careful. The build-up of gases makes a swollen lithium-ion battery vulnerable as its casing is under stress. Never try to puncture a battery to release the gases.

Also the gas that comes out gives ME an instant migraine that lasts a long time. YMMV. Do this outside on the concrete. Good ventilation, and if it catches fire, won't burn your house down. You CAN'T safely pick up a device that has lit because it turns into a blow-torch that will give instant 3rd degree burns. If you have to pick it up to move it somewhere safe, you're already doing it wrong. Discharge the battery to 25% or less before doing this. If it does short, the less power in the battery, the smaller and shorter the fire will be. Use "polyimide film" (aka Capton/Kapton) tape instead of scotch tape if you have it. That's what the manufacturers wrap these batteries in to improve their airtight-ness. (if you see a really thin yellow/range tape in your computer, that's capton) It's very heat resistant, very sticky, and stays stuck for a long time.

We know this can happen because plenty of people have opened a battery completely and had flakes of chemicals burst into flames on their bench minutes after the battery was opened.
Your right it would be interesting to know. Part of it we will never know though because in every lithium battery there are some secret sauce chemicals that they never tell anyone about. If one of these can spontaneously combust in contact with air it will stay a mystery. But knowing which of the known chemicals react this way would nice to know.
Now you're using it for over 2 months , is everything fine ? Working great for long time? Don't get more swollen or heat? Any information or tips you can add? Thank you
6 or 7 months later, mine works fine, and hasn't swollen again. As far as loss of capacity, maybe, but since I mostly use mine for its hotspot for home internet, it stays plugged in, so any loss of capacity while unplugged is moot. Don't be afraid to do things but always be careful as possible.
i have a question, that your battery drain very fast when they swollen? and when after you take the gas out, anything happen in the battery preview inside the phone? (sorry if my english broken)
@@jackm6307 @asvaldoayus9419 Saying a battery charges and holds a charge after performing this absurd "fix" is misleading. The malfunction that caused the swelling in the first place is still present. The battery is compromised and very dangerous!
The solution is to limit the charge voltage or the % to somewhere reasonable, 50-60% as it's plugged in 24/7. Maintaining 100% SoC (higher voltage) is bad for Lithion ion based chemistry.

This is a "tech tip?" You repaired nothing. All you did was treat the symptom of a failing battery. It's still going to have problems holding a charge, and on top of that you are risking a fire in your pocket. Does that sound like a "lose lose" situation to you? It should.
This method worked just fine. I have no intention of using my device, I just didn't want the risk of it rupturing one day and causing damage. It's no different than letting the air out of a small balloon. I expected much worse. Other comments are definitely over exaggerating the dangers. Just make sure there is enough ventilation in the area you are deflating the battery.
I just tried it. The whole entire battery blew up on my table and landed on the floor where it was on fire and doesn't put out easily when you step on it. If it would have been inside the phone? It would have destroyed the whole phone. Don't even play with the battery just throw it in the trash and get it outside of your house immediately. I got myself a nice chemical burn on my hand as well.

@@ecospider5 Yeah I have seen that too. I just want to know what is causing it, is it the lithium?
Your right it would be interesting to know. Part of it we will never know though because in every lithium battery there are some secret sauce chemicals that they never tell anyone about. If one of these can spontaneously combust in contact with air it will stay a mystery.
But knowing which of the known chemicals react this way would nice to know.
@@ecospider5 Yeah that's what I mean. But usually they mix it to increase the ion movements.
I did this to my Alcatel Shine Lite 5 years ago and it’s still working. I used a wood toothpick.
Did it restore its ability to hold a charge any more?
Yes. The battery charges fine and last all day. Doesn’t get hot while charging. Thanks and enjoy your day.

Now you're using it for over 2 months , is everything fine ? Working great for long time? Don't get more swollen or heat?
Any information or tips you can add?
Thank you

this is very good info for you :D
Yosef, DO NOT try it!
Go for it Yosef. Its a good fix. Very safe. 🙂👍
My battery was worse than this one and it was charging and holding a charge.
@@jackm6307 @asvaldoayus9419 Saying a battery charges and holds a charge after performing this absurd "fix" is misleading. The malfunction that caused the swelling in the first place is still present. The battery is compromised and very dangerous!
Don't use a metal object to pierce it, use a lemon tree thorn, it'll make a teeny tiny hole.
The solution is to limit the charge voltage or the % to somewhere reasonable, 50-60% as it's plugged in 24/7. Maintaining 100% SoC (higher voltage) is bad for Lithion ion based chemistry.
Why is he telling us how to if he doesn't want us too?
title don't try this at home
i will try it at school😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Lmao puncturing a swolen pouch cell. DONT DO THIS UNLESS YOU WANT TO GET YOUR HOME TO GO UP IN FIRE.
Swollen battery
You can make your phone a fidget spinner 🗿
the way you put a hole on it is wrong.. u should use a lighter to flame it up and make the plastic pop. and u don't need to put a scratch tape
Thats Basically a Bomb i Reccomend you replace the battery dont be lazy i know you tried but its A Weapon after you fix the Swollen Battery DO NOT TAKE HIS ADVICE THIS IS A WEAPON
The ION are bricking upon their self the battery as exceeded its use the reason why its swollen is because the ION have bricked and the flow of new electricity being introduce has to find the room in the Battey causing it to expand This can happen due to a lot of factors. NEVER PUNCHURE ANY BATTERY its not a good move it will NOT FIX YOUR ISSUE IF YOU HAVE A SWOLLEN BATTERY REACH OUT TO A LOCAL TECHNICIAN TO HAVE IT SERVICED , Swollen batteries are NOT a Safety Concern THEY DO NOT BLOW UP UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS, How ever poking holes in any lithium ion product is a potential health hazard. lithium ion batteries are considered a consumable product MEANING WE DO EXPECT THEM TO FAIL (BE CONSUMED)
Me“😐”
waiting for the cellphone to explode in his hand.
If we fix the swollen battery will the battery run for longer times?
No , eve. Less
@@Hello-helloooo1 This is a standard procesure we are doing with very old devices. It isn't changing the current battery life, if you make it right it won't affect the life, but don't tape it. Use proper sealant.
⚠️(Dangerous Warning!!!) Fixing buldged up batteries is for Adults only and they need to wear goggles, respirator M3 mask and thick safety gloves, because the battery has concrete metal that can catch on fire if the terminals are touched by metal objects and it is dangerous. Also please make sure you are at outdoors or an well big ventilated open area room because it is a lot safer and better to do it as well.🔥🥼👓🥽🎧🧤🧯
Do you know what happens if you inhale the gas from a swollen lithium ion battery?
I accidentally inhaled a bit and I'm worried.
@@AK961.1 Are you alive?
@@TheSoulja99boy welp, i guess he's not
DONT FUCKING DO THIS UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES. Forget the vapor, the battery itself could explode after this "fix"
Thanks, I will make sure to do this in a airport with a dirty nail
Update: did it and now I'm in prison so I have to use a smuggled phone to comment this
and itll swell up in a few day again, its not a fix, its a remedy, but the cause is still there. Dont do this, seriously. Ive seen some kid burned his chest from an li-on phone battery expl. and dieded.
Instructions unclear; accidentally burned my friend's house down...
Edit: I'm in jail now...
But how can you comment on youtube🤔🤔🤔
@@iPhone7_Official they give us internet access for 30 minutes a day. I should be getting out in a few days.

Very sensible fix, wish I'd a done it before I got up this morning to a shattered phone back. All the fear mongering drama over this is ridiculous. Is the battery holding out ok since the fix?
don't be a idiot lithium battery's are very dangerous
This is a "tech tip?" You repaired nothing. All you did was treat the symptom of a failing battery. It's still going to have problems holding a charge, and on top of that you are risking a fire in your pocket. Does that sound like a "lose lose" situation to you? It should.
It fixed my battery without any problem. My phone is charging!!!! One just has to carefully follow the instructions.
This method worked just fine. I have no intention of using my device, I just didn't want the risk of it rupturing one day and causing damage. It's no different than letting the air out of a small balloon. I expected much worse. Other comments are definitely over exaggerating the dangers. Just make sure there is enough ventilation in the area you are deflating the battery.
my dad is doing this to his old note 8 he was about to pass down to me im genuinely concerned about the battery life 🙁🙁
and your own life
@@jpjay1584 💀💀
Thx it work but you need to be very carefull with it
I just tried it.
Sed man
Agree
This is DANGEROUS! The chemicals reacted, you can’t charge a swollen battery! This can KILL!
If its not safe to do it at home then why u r doing this with ur vetterrrry gash at home dear
What model is that?
Idiots do things. I love this series!
After doing this just keep your phone in an empty coffee can far from your bed. You'll be fine.
So the youtuber guy liked a comment of someone who encouraged ppl to try this. I thought the title was "Don't try this at home?"
Do not ever do this under any circumstance. Get a new battery...

lol what😂
That tape will get fried!!!! 😅
battery is still working
How many of you dead after doing this, pls comment. If noone comment i think its safe
as long you puncture the membrane and not the inside it will work perfectly
i did it because my back case getting bend and your battery capacity will still be same and not fixed
Everyone that watches this video will die.
will puff up again, decay of chemicals is not reversible with degassing. Just a palliative measure, not a fix.
You are 100% right
I have tried this with iphone 4 and it got fire 🔥🔥🔥
Nice bradher 😊😊😊
Nice! The battery can be put back into my phone again. Otherwise the back cover is always cracked open a bit.
Nice video bro wish me luck
That's not a solution. That's Dangerous basically you are keeping time bomb in your hand and pocket. And in last he says don't try this at home so what's the use of this video
i tried it at my home and the Battery was Exploed and huge fire on it . Luckyly it was in common room and no fire accident happend . so do not try this .
Seriously i don't believe it🤣u should've make a vdo

Can we charge the battery after taking out the gas from it?

It literally has a battery removal tab, just get rid of the battery and get a new one
