- From the TV series "Soap". In this clip, Jodie (Billy Crystal) steals Bob, and Chuck freaks out! For those of you that don't know the series, Jodie is gay and Chuck is his stepbrother. Chuck is a ventriloquist and his dummy is named Bob. Chuck believes Bob is a real person.

This was so well written and the cast was superb. It was ahead of it's time on so many levels. I hope this series is on dvd bc I'm asking for it for Christmas lol

Burt's reaction on discovering Bob in the fridge is priceless, making it one of the funniest scenes of the entire series.
I literally said the same thing verbatim! This show is so laugh out loud funny all these years later!
Mulligan really carried that show imo. his physical comedy and timing were top notch.

I remember seeing this originally aired in '77 when I was 10. Priceless then as now.
Me too! Same age. I loved Soap, and Chuck and Bob were my favorite characters! And Burt!!! Richard Mulligan was hysterical!!! This scene had so many great parts in it! Such excellent writing and acting! What slays me is Bob "shivering" when he's taken out of the fridge! Great detail there! And his final "yeah" as they leave the room. Something about it cracks me up Everytime!!!
This and the scene where Bob makes Jodie, Danny, and Burt think he's psychic are probably two of the funniest sitcom moments I've ever seen. "It's...it's...an apple!!!"
Well, of course Bob knew it was an apple.....they had read through the scene beforehand, and rehearsed it....so it's a no-brainer that he knew it was an apple!
Chuck and Bob are two of the greatest characters ever on tv.
I still remember how much I absolutely lost it the first time I saw this and the grapefruit started talking. One of the great comedy scenes in television history.
Oh Yes, and then the banana, and the then the English muffin,and then the milk holder burps, LMFAO !
I’ve thought about this episode many times over the years. When he opens the refrigerator and wiggles all over I think it’s one of the funniest scenes ever on TV. I’m very happy to have found it here.
Thank you for posting this video. I can't believe Billy Crystal used to look so young, I can't believe I still laugh at this well written scene 30 years later. Jay Johnstone was a supreme ventriloquist and even went on to host his own show.
The first 2 seasons of SOAP were priceless beyond words. NOTHING was ever seen like this in a sitcom, before or since. The last 2 seasons were still decent but lost something when Benson left. The first 2 seasons were so great it was just too tough of an act to follow. And no sitcom was as scrutinized by the public when it first hit the airwaves, not even All In The Family. The show brought an surreal bizarre factor never again duplicated.

I loved this show. The last couple years, when they started with the "aliens" storyline and other stuff, it got kind of dumb. But it's still better than just about anything on today.
SOAP was never the same when Benson left. I just loved how Benson would always say something so hilarious, and keep on a straight face.
I just commented on the early Soap series. Glad it's a view shared.

Exactly but Susan Harris was making fun of homophobia and racism.....satire .....Jodie was one of the more normal, empathetic characters on the show

I used to have the *BIGGEST* crush on Jay Johnson as a teenage gal in the late '70s... Oh my gawd! This is soooo funny. I used to watch this when i was a kid. I don't know why it was stopped, but at the time I thought it was the funniest thing on TV. Chuck and Bob are so hilarious.

For whatever reason, my parents let me watch SOAP, Barney Miller, Mel Brooks, Benny Hill, Monty Python, Pink Panther films as a youngster in the 70s. Absolutely shaped my life for the better :)
One of the best shows in the last 50 years bar none. Today's sitcom writers should learn from this.

Jay Johnson playing these 2 parts stole almost every scene he was in. Phenomenal ventriloquist. So much so what gets lost in this is that Chuck and Bob were supposed to be written off as the killers of Peter Campbell. The writers loved them so much they quickly changed course but all the clues pointed to them along the way.
Chuck's best acting moment. Wish he had his own storyline.

SOAP was a classic show, I'm amazed by how many people have never heard of it.
Ironically, there is a real mental illness where people can only communicate through puppets. I can't remember what it's called but I once read about a guy who had tourettes and also could only communicate with other people through a hand-puppet giraffe that he had carried around since childhood. Weird.

I really loved this show.
They never had any actual scenes together but it's safe to say brothers Chuck and Peter didn't have a decent brotherly relationship. Peter (probably) shunned Chuck, and Chuck in turn was jealous of Peter, and originally the producers planned on having Chuck (and Bob) be the one(s) who murdered Peter, because of said jealousy.

Chuck is not half brothers with Jodie. Jodie was Burt's wife's son before they got married, and Chuck is Burt's son before he got married. They are step-brothers.
