Im scared to watch the daria movies because that means I’ve seen everything and I like the idea of having more content to watch, like it’s still going on or something.

I never liked tom. I liked that they moved to a story centric style from episodic. I liked the story where something comes between two friends. But I hated tom, he felt forced in any scene he was in (to me) He took jabs at himself to advance the plot without having any real character other than a disaffected male lead to mesh but not match with Daria and Jane. I'm not trying to ship Daria with either of the Lanes I'm just saying that I really don't think tom was given enough of an actual identity. For the entirety of season 4 he feels like a plot device and season 5 tries to make something out of him but it feels half done. I just wish that Tom was given the same love Quin was given. The writers did a great job of establishing her as shallow and Instinctual but helped he grow from that. She was a character you loved to hate but could relate to when she was constantly met with frustration. I think she was well written. I enjoyed Quin as much as I enjoyed Peggy Hill in King of the Hill.
The problem with Tom--and I say this as someone who loves both Daria the show and Daria the character--was that, uneasily enough, he was a little too realistic. We were so used to rooting for Daria (and against types like Quin, although you're 100% right that we grew to like her, a feat of genius) that when we got a character who relentlessly highlighted the flaws of Daria in ways that we couldn't ignore/brush off (again, like we could with Quin), it sort of took us out of it. I hated Tom at times because what he said was right, actually, and it was against our protagonist.
@@PC-wp9tj Agreed, he really brought out the worst in Daria for some reason and made her unlikeable at times. He was so stand-up and generally well put together that the writers practically had to make Daria antagonize him for no reason at times. The explanations never felt valid either, and they just brushed off Daria's behavior because Tom would only stand up for himself if things got really heated.
I miss this show so much. I literally have an emotional connection with this show.
