Hey! Hope you enjoyed the video! I wanted to point out that for those of you that are wondering, the soldering process to build this keyboard yourself I found to be slightly tedious. I am by no means an expert so it is definitely doable. There is a link in the description for the official build guide for the wired Cherry Corne Version 3. The only difference with the wireless version are the nice!nano microcontrollers which should be installed by socketing and soldering batteries to these. This is what I personally found most challenging. If you're wondering about the keycaps I have on the keyboard, I've included a link for them in the description, but as of right now they are unfortunately sold out. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Yes, I am very enjoy the video. It's very informative and useful. (Even I have not yet got my crkbd. Especially my "plan" is go to wired crkbd first, and maybe go to wireless crkbd later.)
Terrific video! I love how he explained everything that he was introducing. I really like his taste in practical versatility too. Lower learning curve equals less loss of orientation when you need to work on any conventional keyboard. Everything is aimed at being portable and with the wireless capability you are less likely to need to use the conventional set up on other computers! Really like the way he is thinking! I even like the idea of the other setup he had, the Iris.

I’ve been wanting to buy a corne keyboard just because it looks so awesome as it gives off Cyberpunk vibes and I’ve been confused for weeks that it’s discouraged me from officially buying it. But I badly want to learn how to program this type of keyboard but all of the other videos that I’ve watched have been so confusing and not user friendly for a new user as like you said I’m used to the traditional keyboard. I am considering to switch to Corne or Sofle from Anne Pro 2 and GK64XS, and finding this viedo is very informative. Thanks Josean! Now, I go to implement your layout design with my GH60 board (via key remapping) to see if I am able to use the layout with no doubt. 1 thing I can sure is, after watching your video, I have no dobut on missing a num row, and will go toward to Corne (not Sofle).
Just came across this video while researching split keyboards. Been trying to figure out what to get. So many are so expensive. But I think the Iris is what I may end up going with. $230 for a full set including steel plates, a middle layer, and a keycap set. Would probably just grab some Cherry switches to finish it out and I found a magnetic tenting accessory for like $30 that should work with the steel plates on it for a nice look.

I’m at the same stage of key reduction, although my layers are more specialized and with more dual function keys.
I’m wondering if you feel a similar urge to one I do: to ditch the outer columns to make my pinkies move even less. With enough layers and dual-functions, it’s more than feasible. Ready to ditch 6 more keys?

Hi. You have a great setup. I'm also thingking about getting a split keyboard. Now using planck EZ. My setup is quite similar but my "thumb keys" are all double function. So I have meta, ctrl, shift, alt all there. To press complex combos I also have some modifiers on the sides. Btw shift as a thumb key was a game changer. No need for capslock now.

hey man nice build. for tenting there are lots of options. there is also a acryl case that has tenting holes which can be used to tent the corne. Or what i do is, use magnetic tenting legs. then they are removable for easy travel. because screws have to be removed when you but it in your case and added again. and to finde the right setting and heigth again gets annoying fast.
Also there are lots of cases availebale for the corne, lots of 3d printed ones. i designed multiple myself. which allows things like build in support for tenting or even travel cases.
regarding the firmware. i personally like zmk more because it compiles automatically once its setup on your git. the syntax seems less complicated as well. and building the firmware yourself is always better because it allows you more options for your layout. VIA or qmk configurator is limited, they cant add you combos, tap dances or one shot layers. you could say there is a whole new layer that you have not tapped in yet :D .
Also i recommend the corne discord server. lots of cool and friendly folks there. if you need help, inspiration or just want to talk corne for a bit, this is the place to find that.

I am about to order my kit for building my first Corne. Have you heard of the miryoku layout for these keyboards. I noticed that you only have one set of ctrl, alt, option, cmd keys. For me this could potentially be frustrating depending on what keys are being pressed in combo with them. The miryoku layout deals with exactly this issue and places them as hold keys under the home row. I would love to know what you think about this. Love the videos.

Hey! Really appreciate it! Honestly I didn’t really look into making the Iris wireless. I wasn’t using the number row on it so I wanted something more compact, and the Corne had everything I needed. Additionally, at least the Iris model I had didn’t make use of microcontrollers and the only way I knew this was done by most people is by replacing standard microcontrollers with bluetooth ones like the nice!nanos, so that’s why I went with the Corne which makes use of microcontrollers. The Sofle I believe has microcontrollers as well. Hope that helps!
You should try a 5x3 keyboard (remove the extra pinkie column) you won't have to reach far with your pinkie, it will be more comfortable

Have you ever tried moving the tmux/nvim shortcuts to keys on one of your lower layers?

I'm currently on a Lily58, and I'm thinking about switching to a horn with nicenano microcontrollers or a more cheap version (Xiao BLE).
I've read that a lot of people have bluetooth problems, especially with macs. I see that you also encountered these problems.
For the problem of the keys that are pressed during transport, you did not want to integrate a switch to be able to cut the power of the battery during transport or when the keyboard is not used for a long period?
I've started to fiddle around with QMK lately, and added some features like home row mode, or having different behaviors on my thumbs keys depending on if I activate the key or keep it pressed.
Aren't you interested in this kind of mechanics?

I only wish there was some way of emulating a mouse. 90% of the time I don't need it, as chrome & Firefox have vim-like plugins for navigation. But there are those odd times.
Something like a Thinkpad nub would do the trick.

Hey Josean! With your layer set-up, are they one-touch toggle, or do you need to hold the layer switch whilst pressing the key to access it?
Since he has dedicated layer keys, he may have both: one-shot (alternatively toggle) on tap, hold on hold.
How do you handle key combos with multiple layers say S+] or the good old z+= in vim?
Do you stay in layer as long as you press the button or have to exit?
Edit: btw good job. Removing movement of fingers seems like a great concept, i still have some more keys but will experiment with this
Assuming you mean "hold Shift and press ]", that's just the } key which is directly available on his symbols layer, so you would hold the Lower key and press the key that is normally /. Assuming you mean "press z then press =", you would press z then hold the Lower key and press the key that is normally j.
Thank you for this chill and engaging videos. You made me want to try to build my own split-keyboard. However, can you explain to me how you managed to get rid of the arrow keys? How do you navigate in iterm2 for instance when you need to move a few characters back and forth?
Hey! So my arrow keys are on layer 2 or the upper layer of my keyboard: 08:18. Hope that helps!
ctrl + d - deletes
ctrl + a - beginning of line
ctrl + e - end of line
ctrl + f - goes forward
ctrl + b - goes backwards
If you want to go back words just do same bindings and add cmd on Mac or Alt on Windows.
That's how I navigiate going back and forth in terminal.

hi, im currently using your keymap with my new corne. Im usinng it for both windows and my macbook, do you know why sometimes the space key randomly opens outlook in windows?

just going off of pcb design experience, i doubt the corne has a power switch since it is compatible with wired mcus and so it would be more practical to just not include one for some users. If wired users didnt want a switch they would have to bridge the connection with magnet wire which is a hassle for most. I think its very much dependent on the mcu though since some may have power switches but those switches wont be very usable especially with oled screens or part of a case covering them.
If you mean a key acting as a power switch (which makes the most sense for all use cases), he doesnt have one in the layer part of the video. The reason for this is that, when you want to power the circuit back up, the keypress wont be detected since the mcu is not powered. You would need a physical toggle switch for power which to my knowledge the corne lacks.
EDIT:
A possible solution is to have pads for soldering in a switch and a trace that bypasses the switch. All that would need to be done for a wireless build is to just scratch the bypassing trace with a box cutter and solder in a switch. Might do this on my next pcb and case design
How do you use C-S? Left pinky on both keys?
Have you tried adding the zmk setting for improving BT Power, It really improved my iris rev range when I added it, although I don't remember how it is called.

Hey! Thank you! Usually what I do is record myself with the camera while I also am screen recording the terminal on my computer and then in post, I synchronize the clips with the audio and put one on top of the other. ...but what the hack! On 5:42 you show your layouts. You use only one shift key on the left side?! So.. you keep your left pinky held down and type with the rest of your left hand capital letters???
I tried something like this, but in the end I figured that it's better to move your fingers more to press 1 key instead of reducing movement, but having to press 2 keys. The split and non-staggered nature is nice though, but by using non-standard stuff like that I give up the option of having an aluminum gasket mounted build which is just super nice in feel and sound.
If you prefer aluminium gasket mounted builds for their sound over a keyboard that actually does not brake your fingers and wrists, than that is your choice and I respect that.
However, if you work with a non-standard, non-rowstaggered-fingerbraking, non-unsplit-wristbraking keyboard for some time, there is nothing that brings you back to your old keyboard. Nothing. So you better don't if you want to keep fancying your current keyboard. After using any keyboard with a proper layout (column-staggered, thumb cluster, split/separated, optionally key wells; no, forget Alice) for a reasonable amount of time, you notice how ugly, how really - REALLY - ugly, uncomfortable, even unhealthy and harmful the standard layout is, that cannot be compensated by the nicest "thug" or the most sophisticated taping/foaming/gasketing/lubing. You will not only not like it any more, you will start to outright hate it. You will despise any minute that you are forced to work with the standard layout. It then feels like covering quite a distance with your first pre-school children's bike.
Yes, a nice switch with a nice feel and a nice sound are very good things to a keyboard, but waaay down the priority list (at least my priority list). Implementing that in a standard layout keyboard (no matter whether tkl, 75%, 60%, etc), for me feels like applying fancy 19" aluminium, multicolored wheel rims with low profile tires and a race car suspension to a 150 years old horse carriage (that is about the age of the standard layout). That is perfectly fine if you like horse carriages and consider those wheels are the only things missing. However, I would not like to work with that.

@@miramallo30 I respect your opinion and you may be right. I started to think about how to reduce the effect of plasticky/hollow sounding keyboards(aka. not gasket mounts). Maybe if I drop the idea of a case altogether and DIY something to protect the pcb, I can achieve split kbd life. The idea came when I noticed that during assembly before I put the keyboard in the case the sound and feel was actually acceptable. Cases are evil. I wish I got the idea sooner.

Switches on the other hand... there is no reason to compromise there. Highly recommend KTT strawberry for example.
How is typing things that have frequent alternation between letters, numbers, and symbols? Think passwords, or c++ templates/namespace scopes, css, html. It seems like it would be annoying to have to keep jumping between layers to go from letter to symbol to number to symbol to letter...you get it.
With some practice, it is ok. It is no big difference to switching between lower/upper case by shift.
Switching between layers is less of a problem than being familiar with the actual position of the symbol. So as long as you need to actually think about where the corresponding key is, it is a bit anoying. As soon as you are familiar with your symbol positions, they nearly write themselves.

After watching my software tech lead work with a split keyboard, I’ve been itching to get a corne. However I find parts picking and the steep learning curve rather intimidating.
Coming back to this video : how bad was the interference / latency on the corne wireless ? Planning on buying a wireless one for work. Wired one stays at home.

Why not just connect both via Bluetooth directly to the PC? Are there issues due to key combinations?

Are the OLEDs that bad in terms of power consumption? I am kinda on the fence on whether to use them.
They seem to drain the battery substantially. I’ve considered trying out the “nice!view” screens which should be more power efficient but haven’t tried yet.

Does the QMK or something handle encryption? I mean, it's keyboard and it's wireless. Without encryption, your passwords can leak.

Hey! Wireless split keyboards like this are harder to find off the shelf. There are split keyboards like the Ergodox EZ or Moonlander that are good off the shelf alternatives, but they aren't wireless and are bigger than the corne. One option I've seen is buying from an etsy seller that builds the wireless corne or similar keyboard for you and sends you everything ready to go, and you can then further customize it, especially when it comes to configuring custom layers with firmware like ZMK which is a really nice part of having a keyboard like this. All is good, may be you would be faster at some point, but you would be keyboard dependent, which is unique and only you have. your productivity will fall drastically when you have to work with conventional one. So, the logic is good and need to be refined, otherwise the result is loss of huge amount of time and energy.
This is real engineering.

Couldn't it be made to use wireless charging, using regular smartphone wireless charging pad? I really do hate inserting/removing cables to charge things. There are so many things that require that, and it's tiresome.

HI how do you type the number keys on this keyboard, been doing a lot of research into keebs lately i want me a custom built something similar, but dovrak, not sure if that's even possible?
The number keys are accessible by holding the "lower-layer-key" (middle button of left thumb cluster) and then tap the corresponding key on the lower two rows of the left side. So 1 is lower-layer-key + A, 2 is lower-layer-key + S, and so on.
You may completely customize your layout and apply any layout you like. Also Dvorak. You may change it at any time back and forth or even elaborate your own layout.
