- Download the high quality MP3 for free at www.CryonautMusic.com I spent much of my late teens and early 20s listening to progressive rock, and Genesis quickly became a huge influence on my musical tastes (part of my sacred three prog-rock pillars, along with Rush and Yes). Dodo/Lurker, off their 1981 album, ABACAB, is one of my all-time favourite Genesis tracks. It twists and turns, taking the listener on a gritty, bombastic ride, but is at the same time a bit more accessible to the average audience than their longer, more involved pieces like Supper's Ready.
This album had great use of Tony Banks' synthesizer as a primary instrument, and helped to cement the synth as my go to music making device. Genesis were also big on using heavy bass synth sounds to lay a foundation for much of their recordings, often holding the root note while doing interesting chord changes on top. Their earlier track, Squonk, is the perfect example. This is one of my favourite songwriting elements, and I owe a lot to Genesis for opening my eyes (ears?) to this technique.
With this cover, I tried to pay proper respect to the original while still injecting my own flavours throughout the mix. The result is a bit less "sinister" than the source, and slightly more uplifting, especially in the Lurker second act. This is also my first real stab at singing lead vocals, and overall I think I did okay. Thank goodness for the power of software manipulation. Fun fact: I always though Phil Collins was singing "Darth Vader, agitator". I've now learned that it's "Dog baiter, agitator", which makes even less sense to me...
Anyway, hope you like it!
Wow!!!
Thank you!!!
Brilliant
Thank you, Jim! :)
The fresh take on the arrangement is my favorite part of this cover. The key changes, modulations, and starting with the Lurker melody. I wish this had made it to your Spotify album. Meaning I can only hear this on UA-cam. This very well done and diving deeper into it after my first listen a year ago... I'm just dumbstruck by the musicianship. You managed to pay perfect homage to a deep cut Genesis classic and made the song your own.
Hey, thanks so much for the kind words, Jim! I really should make a point to upload my cover tunes to Spotify. Thanks for the reminder :)
Agree 100%
I'm a drummer with the same three sacred prog-rock pillars: Genesis, Rush, and Yes. Good taste, sir - and well done!
That's awesome - thank you!
This is amazing!
Thank you so much!
Wow! That ROCKS. Fantastic version.
Hey, thank you so much! Glad you like it! :)
my dad showed this to me and i love it so much
keep up the great work!
Hey, thanks so much! Glad you like it. Tell your dad he's got good taste, ha ha! :)
Wow. Just wow.
Thank you! :)
I am blown away by this! I remember buying ABACAB in a local record store in Bradenton FL back in 1981. Dodo/Lurker was one of the tunes I used to crank on my big Kenwood stereo. This is like a 21st Century revitalized version of that great song. Awesome Job there, Cryonaut! This has greater production quality than the version of Squonk that the group Spock's Beard does.
Wow - thank you so much, Peter! I'm glad you like it and I appreciate the kind words. Yeah, huge stereos were the best way to listen to this stuff back in the day. I remember buying this gigantic Marantz system that I christened with Yes' Big Generator album back in the summer of 88. Good times. Thanks for reminding me about Spock's Beard (I'd heard of them, but haven't given them much of a listen yet) - they'll be going on my playlist today!
Just awesome
Thank you so much, SBS! Glad you like it :)
Very nice refreshing version of Dodo, Bravo!
Hey, thank you so much! Glad you liked it :)
This is amazing!
Really like the arrangement and the sounds are super punchy.
Wow was searching for this track and came across this version. Awesome recreation! Can't wait to play this on my sound system this weekend. 🙌🙌🙌
Hey, thank you! Glad you like it! :)
I complain the Genesis don't be proud of ABACAB album. In my opinion, it was theyr bravest album and full of good songs. This and EP 3 X 3, and "Three Sides Live" form a unique sonic experience.
Really unique.
great work
I love that. Thank you kindly.
You're very welcome - glad you like it!
New track! I'm so happy! :D
Me too, haha! More material being worked on as well, so stay tuned! :)
Amazing!
Thank you! :)
I love it ! Better than the original to my ears ! Congrats, you've done a wonderful job ! I would like to hear more of your remixes
Thank you so much! I am working on a few new remixes, so stay tuned!
Fantastic! Very unique version of this killer song. It gets new life here! Abacab is the best album with Phil Collins singing imho.
Thank you so much! I agree, Abacab is one of my favorites as well! :)
Impressive!
Thank you!
👍👍
Congratulations!!!You revisited this song how It could have been had Genesis followerd the Duke path instead they chased only the money
Is this really you singing? Damn, you have a great singing voice!
Yup, that's yours truly... and thank you! Truth be told, it took many takes and liberal doses of vocal processing to get there, but I think the resulting vocals were good enough that I might think about experimenting with more vocals/lyrics in future tracks. We'll see... :)
@@CryonautMusic When I listen to things like Boards of Canada, I realise just how senseless the people who say "processing isn't real" yadda yadda are... sure ok, whatever, but if you wanna process the shit out of things I say go for it! Let's remember, the entire Thriller baseline by MJ is completely written and recorded on a synthesizer... But it's modern pop that everyone loved.
There are people who will love it and hate it, but do what YOU want and feel, embrace those who LOVE it and forget those who hate it. Life is too short man and as always, this is a BANGER bro! Your voice reminds me of Damon Albarn for some reason. Keep it up mate.
@@mikepawlikguitar Hey Mike! Yeah, I agree about the processing. There's that old saying in music production, "If it sounds good, it IS good." I think for the most part, that's true. As far as I'm concerned, I don't care how a band or artist gets to the sound they put on an album. If I like it, I like it, regardless of how "real" the sound is. Effects and processing, in a way, is just another instrument.
