- How the US Navy Zumwalt Class Destroyer Works - The ship will be known as the Zumwalt class destroyer, named in honor of Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt Jr Chief of Naval Operations from 1970 to 1974. It will be the most sophisticated warship in naval history. In this video, we'll take a look at this next-generation destroyer both inside and out to see how it will support national security and military strategies.
WHAT IS THE ZUMWALT CLASS DESTROYER?
The Zumwalt class destroyer is a key part of the U.S. Navy's 21st Century Surface Combatant (SC-21) Program, initiated by Navy planners in 1991, to conceive of warships capable of delivering next-generation functionality. The SC-21 Program describes a family of ships designed to fight more effectively in littoral operations, which are those conducted close to the shore. At the same time, SC-21 ships will need to function equally well out in the open ocean. The key is versatility, with ships in the SC-21 family able to handle virtually any mission, from wartime missions in land attack and undersea warfare to noncombatant evacuations to presence, escort and diplomatic missions.
The SC-21 family includes a destroyer class and a cruiser class of ships. The destroyer class was originally designated DD 21, and to bring the first ships in the class to life, the Navy introduced a four-phase development process. Two competing teams oversaw the first two phases, which involved system concept design and initial systems design. Bath Iron Works, with Lockheed Martin Corporation as the systems integrator, led the first team. Northrop Grumman Ingalls, with Raytheon Systems Co. as the system integrator, led the other.
Northrop Grumman won the contract to move forward in phase-three design and development, anchoring what would be known as the DD(X) National Team. Raytheon became the National Team's prime mission systems integrator for all electronic and combat systems. Other major subcontractors included Lockheed Martin, BAE Systems, Boeing and General Dynamics Bath Iron Works.
In November 2005, the DD(X) program received funding approval to enter the fourth and final phase: construction of eight ships. Five months later, the Navy announced that the class and lead ship would carry the designation and hull number DDG 1000 Zumwalt. The first two ships in the class are currently being built, with a targeted delivery date of 2012. When it's commissioned, the DDG 1000 Zumwalt will replace older destroyers of the Spruance class (DD 963 - DD 997) and will complement ships in the Arleigh-Burke class, ushering in a new era of naval warfare.
In 2001, the U.S. Navy suspended the DD 21 program in order to evaluate progress made in the first two phases. The two design teams introduced several innovative concepts and systems never before seen on a modern warship. Unfortunately, the costs to implement these technologies were estimated to be much greater than originally projected. As a result, the Navy reoriented the program to focus on technology development and maturation, including robust land-based and sea-based testing of prototype technologies that could be leveraged across multiple ship classes." The Navy also replaced the DD 21 designation with DD(X) to signify the updated vision of the program.
The DDG 1000 has been designed specifically to participate in both traditional military engagements, as well as those that might arise as part of the global war on terrorism. Like destroyers in the Arleigh-Burke class, the DDG 1000 will be multi-mission, capable of providing forward deterrence and presence, and an integral part of joint and combined expeditionary forces. But unlike today's destroyers, the primary mission of the DDG 1000 will be land attack support for ground forces. In fact, one of its most important requirements didn't come from the U.S. Navy, but from the Marine Corps, which, in 2002, requested that the Navy provide 24/7, all-weather, long-range missile-firing capabilities in support of USMC amphibious operations. That means the DDG 1000 will need to operate efficiently in shallow coastal waters - not in quick, hit-and-run missions, but in engagements that may last days or weeks.
Having a persistent presence in littoral areas is one of the most important design requirements of the Zumwalt class destroyers. Now let's look at some of the ship's other requirements, as outlined by Navy planners:
Looks like it doesnt even need guns or missiles. All it needs to do is to ram into the enemy ship to slice it in half...

Seaman: Enemy ship sighted sir.
Captain: Ramming speed!

Agreed... the profile of the ship and color seem to make it much more difficult to spot against a backdrop of endless ocean and horizon.

US Navy: we want a better ship
Engineers designing it: what features would you like to enhance?
US Navy: Yes
And the US Navy got ass fucked big time since that pretty US Zumwalt has useless built in weapon system and and it's engine broke down twice. The only benefit I see from this warship is its stealth and gathering local intel for other warships.
S To isn’t it’s purpose to be silent and launch missles from far away
@@sto2779 it also will have a railgun so it will likely be an escort vessel or a frontline ship
@@sto2779 When the next battery breakthrough comes it will probably get lasers and a railgun.
@@neoblox6753 Railgun ammo got cancelled. Now they're just metal barrels.
It doesn’t need CIWS.. Not only does its sleek design allow it to outrun missiles, it can display a holographic image of Chuck Norris giving the bird or even a Battleship, thus scaring away potential threats..(which is actually difficult when moving at light speed.) ..no need for useless antennas, they usually break off before mach 10 anyway.
There actually some truth to this escort ships have the capability to make themselves look much larger to fool radar and missiles into firing on the escort and not the aircraft carrier which in turn is trying to look small on radar
That’s cool. I’ll tell you one thing, I’d much rather do the painting, fresh-water wash downs, and maintenance on this thing than the cruiser (Normandy CG-60) I was on..

Amazing ship. Funny how people think developing this kind of high tech is done without any mistake. Mistakes and trials are common in any kind of development.
I hope someday the Zumwalt destroyers can be revamped to be the formidable & revolutionary ship it was designed to be. There’s lots of potential

"How the US Navy Zumwalt class Destroyer works"
*Putin grabs a pen and paper and begins to take notes.
what you described is the Chinese.
@@IshijimaKairo Why would we ever want to copy this overglorified piece of scrap metal. The ammo for the guns have been cancelled and the ship has jarring electrical issues, and let's not talk about how the Zumwalt is inferior stat-wise to every other destroyer class and above ship in the US arsenal.
A quick status recap- the Zumwalt class has no ammunition for its two main batteries, it has fewer VLS cells (80) than the Arleigh Burke class DDGs (96), lacks a dedicated SeaRAM or other CIWS device, the tumblehome hull is unproven in rough seas and the two newer ships have sacrificed a purpose-built stealth superstructure to save money (so the vessel is no longer truly a stealth destroyer). It displaces 16,000 tons as a floating brick that has no effective main armament for which it was designed, limited ability to defend itself from common ASM platforms and limited protection against swarming boat tactics. I don't know what to call this vessel- an experiment, a technologies demonstrator or the means to an end for congressional pork.
One thing it really isn't- a warship that can match an peer adversary. The United States used to build functional ships that served our needs well. I have no fucking idea what has happened to our country. 😔
BTW- how many commercials does this video really need? 🤨

What you don't know is that the functional ships were probide to compete with its adverseries....
US has no capable Adverseries left as Russia is trying to survive while China buys its ships....
All the countries are behind US in atleast two defense sectors and definitely in Navy
@@vamsikrishna.c6277 Russia has reduced its fleet size but is modernizing its vessels. I agree that they currently lack an adequate surface force to seriously contest the USN. China is very different. China has significantly expanded its shipbuilding infrastructure, and is adding new hulls to its surface warfare fleet in prodigious numbers. The Type 55 destroyer is really more akin to the Ticonderoga class cruiser given its displacement and VLC load out for air warfare defense. The successive Type 52 destroyers have incremental improvements in armament and combat systems integration. China is building out its carrier task force complement and LHD-class ships to ensure its amphibious combat capabilities.
China is building its own ships, and has now started to sell their export variants to other countries like India. China's strategic plan was laid out decades ago, and its ship hull construction rate has already outpaced anything the USN accomplished since the end of the Cold War. The USN continues to build competing designs (the Littoral class variants), is struggling to bring the Ford-class carrier towards initial combat readiness, is seeking a new frigate (to fulfill the failed roles of the LCV) and still needs enough money for Virginia sub Block II upgrades and the entirely new Columbia-class SSBNs. There are personnel problems, budget limitations and the near-continuous loss of the skilled teams needed to man large-scale ship building sites.
China certainly doesn't have the actual combat experience of the USN (more than sixty years of carrier operations), but then again they're only likely to contest the SCS and already have a lot of fixed infrastructure for A2AD. It doesn't really matter if the US spends even more GDP on its defense budget- its pointless to throw money at ships that simply can't fulfill their missions.
We've become our own worst enemy.
@@thomasromanelli2561 Do you really think the carrier class sucks? Because by the time Ford enters into service and other contracts come into play... All the aircraft carriers of US would be decades old and yet more operational capable than any other counterpart. China builds its infrastructure but cannot sell much because its allies are either landlocked or really poor nations pay off like Pakistan. India wouldn't buy any equipment without looking into proper maintenance and mainly a license to build it indigenously. So China is limited to develop its own weaponry and it was warned by Russia for copying their naval version fighter jets.
By the time China emerges as the number one Navy, US would've replaced atleast two of it's carriers and hopefully be better at its politics.
US just needs that big Adversary who'd threaten it by putting up a challenge
Wouahhh...tout un bateau de défense !!! Excellent !

If you want a stealth ship, build a submarine.
Dont be silly, this one wastes taxpayer dollars much faster than any submarine ever could.
Looks like someone needs to learn about maritime operations
Submarines have hundreds of disadvantages compared to a warship, so no
@@uncannyvalley3190 Yes but they are actually stealthy, unlike surface ships (including this one)
@@N330AA okay good point, too bad this ship’s purpose isn’t being stealthy. It’s GOOD at that, but that’s not it’s entire point. They plan on mounting a rail gun on it which would be awesome but expensive....
China (and Iran, N.Korea) love these primers on the inner workings and capabilities of US weapon systems.
Smooth sailing into big wave with no difficulty, and armed with plenty of fire power is necessary to become a destroyer for US navy.

Stealth works great in the air because it's a 3-dimensional medium. Submarines also, but not surface ships.
Making a ship into a stealth beast helps somewhat as far as percentages, but it hardly makes the boat unsinkable or impossible to hit. Just shoot some torpedoes in that general direction, and maybe one of them will hit.
The Zumwalt has proven to be a very costly boondoggle.
Here me out here have you heard of the F-35C yet

They are adding the new Hypersonic Missiles to the ships. Making them stealthy strategic missile platforms. Range is said to be up to 2500 miles at Mach 6 for the missile and its glide payload.
For what kind of battle or combat is this ship coceived?
Anyone else find it odd that a guy with a heavy Russian accent is narrating this video?
The bottom line? $6 BILLION spent and the Zumwalt is sitting at a dock with half of its armament unusable because the ammunition is too expensive. Magnificent example of Congress writing blank checks to the military with no oversight.
Incredible isn’t it? My guess is the navy lied cuz they wanted or felt they needed the ship. Figuring once the ship was built they would find the money to arm it. Somebody should be in jail.
Miles O'Brien the requirements kept changing that’s another reason those had issues
@@grantrichardet6250 The Zumwalt catastrophe started in the late 1990's. The Navy personnel that were responsible for the design of this boat anchor have always been in the pocket of the MIC. Either direct appointments from the defence industry or promised lucrative jobs after their stint in the Navy. Look at the current Secretary of Defence: Esper came from Raytheon. The specifications kept changing to more expensive add ons and more impossible to fulfill expectations. Now that the Zumwalt is a complete failure the original purpose of the ship has changed from Marine Ground attack support to Destroyer Killer to $6 Billion broken toy.
