Midsize trucks can do it all. Quickly becoming the right size for many shoppers, midsize trucks are capable of towing, hauling and heading off-road. In this video, Ryan ZumMallen from Edmunds compares four of the top pickup trucks you can buy to see which is the best midsize truck for 2021. For this truck comparison, Ryan has the redesigned 2022 Nissan Frontier and puts it up against the top-rated Toyota Tacoma, the Ford Ranger and the GMC Canyon (the Chevy Colorado is covered as well). Ryan spends time with each truck and discusses their respective strengths and weaknesses, and he gives you his pick for best midsize truck and why. So if you're on the hunt for your next midsize truck, look no further than our 2021 midsize truck comparison test of the 2022 Nissan Frontier, 2021 Toyota Tacoma, 2021 Ford Ranger, and 2022 GMC Canyon.

In my experience, a taller bed side means you can stack more items in the bed. Not sure why it was mentioned as a con. There’s a cool feature called a “tailgate” to aid in loading.

I have a 2015 GMC Canyon, and I'm still very happy with it. To be honest, it's more truck than I needed. I could have easily gotten by with a Honda Ridgeline. When I went looking for a a new truck, I was planning on testing out the Tacoma and Frontier as well as the Canyon. But I can be impulsive at times. I went to the GMC dealership first because it's only a few miles away from my home. I never made it to Nissan or Toyota. I took the Canyon for a test drive and I bought it that day. I don't have any major problems or complaints, and I enjoy it every time I drive it. It's not perfect, but it has been good enough. Comfort-wise, I find it very good, for me anyway. I did a ten hour drive and by the time I reached my destination, I was still feeling "fresh as a daisy". I will confess, however, I did have to get a couple things fixed. I'm sure I wouldn't have had any problems with a Tacoma. But I have no regrets. The best part? It's paid for.

Have owned both Japanese brands, and gotta respect both of them. But there seems to be a Toy bias in many reviews including this one. I see a trend of high regard for the Frontier in powertrain, cab quietness and comfort, road manners, braking, etc, while many reviews criticize Tacoma for bad seating position, grabby brakes, weak torque even with V6, and a trans that hunts for gears all the time, and still has rear drums. Yet they almost always rate the taco as no. 1. Often they state reliability as a factor, but how is a Frontier not reliable? At one time they had the radiator/transmission issue, but that's all I have heard. Toyota replaced many rotten frames due to rust. Once I had a nice SR5 4we that I loved, but it had eaten a head gasket and rear diff before 100k.
As a body guy, I am leery of that composite bed if it breaks under impact.
All that said , nobody builds perfect stuff, and I am not sure how Toyota got on such a pedestal. And with Nissan making such a strong effort, why do people expect them to be a lot cheaoer than other brands? People will rip the frontier for its "old" frame, which has held up very well and still works fine, but few criticize the "old" tacoma. I am just saying there needs to be more objectivity in these tests, especially when I see in the comments ts that many buyers did their own testing and got different results. Edmund's seems in cahoots with Toyota.
But I probably should not be looking at this stuff. My old work truck is a Hardbody with 423k miles, 105 HP, and most if the running gear stock. Freshened the engine just before 300k, but it was far from dead.
Hope Nissan still builds like this. Japanese integrity is amazing.

I agree with most of this, but there needs to be a better focus on the actual driving experience. The Tacoma's cabin is much shorter and you basically have to drive it reclined back like a car if you are taller than 5'8". The seating position is a royal pain if you take it off-road. So we all do realize that the industry loves to hate on Ford which is always a shoe in. Bro the Ranger videos shows it out performing those trucks. And the Tacoma? Most viewers choose Toyota because they think it stands for something great. Let's not forget the Tundra has lagged behind all American tucks. All big and non agile. Stop.

Bruh, I rented the Ford Ranger the engine is peppy but I agree with most of what he said the best feature is keyless start. The back seat is terrible in the Ranger. I hate the sit on the floor action that Tacoma has too. I cannot stand Toyota power trains it is not great. The new Frontier is a very big improvement but what do you expect from a company that has not changed its vehicle since 2005. My favorite in the Colorado ZR2 but it has it flaws the fact that you are still starting it with a key and no high tech safety.

Ford being ford they’re not that reliable either, but better than what Gm is doing. The frontier will be a competitor. Good power train, seats, comfort, and spec and I really like it. @@anubis1416 I’ll take the new frontier over the ranger anyday. The frontier has always been a strong outperforming truck. The only reason it got such a bad rep was that it’s looks were outdated and the cursed CVT models that Nissan produced in its suvs and sedans. However theyre now pushing for a new change to Nissan by dropping their cheap CVT models and updating their new models (looks and specs). I’m excited as hell for Nissan’s new vehicle models and can’t wait for what they came up with on their new generation vehicles. Sadly they eliminated their manual transmissions and 4 cyl option for trucks which I think was a big mistake. So far Nissan is going up against climbing a steep mountain of competition and we’ll see if it can outperform the competition.

The new pro4x has better payload then the previous gen and towing is bumped a bit for the pro4x models Its very comparable to the trd offroad with out sacrificing ride, seats and few other things. The one thing the Canyon has going for it is looks. It looks the best of all the trucks. And it doesn't have a lot of the faults of the Colorado. The new Frontier is definitely giving the Tacoma a run for the money, but remember that Toyota is redesigning the Tacoma. It already did with the Tundra. As is Ford redesigning the Ranger. There are rumors that RAM is bringing a Dakota in at the end of 2023. 2022 lineup is honestly all dated with the exception of the Frontier. If you want to buy a new vehicle, wait for the 2024 lineup. I've driven all four of these trucks very recently even though I knew I wouldn't like the Tacoma based on previous experience I gave it a try just to see if anything was different. Nope. Still the worst of the bunch as far as everything that matters ninety eight percent of the time. Worst power, worst ride and handling and most uncomfortable. How anyone considers the Tacoma the best in an actual comparison and not just a perception contest is beyond me. When Nissan had an ancient design Edmunds and everyone else trashed it. Now that Toyota is the old man in the crowd, well, suddenly it's not old, it's, uh, tried and true, and, umm, you know exactly what you're going to get, yeah, that's it. Give me a break with the bias garbage. The Tacoma is a reliable truck and good off road where the vast majority of owners will never use it beyond the capabilities of any of the other trucks here which are pretty darn capable in their own right if you knew what you were doing with them. And this really isn't meant as a slam of the Tacoma as much as it is calling out the inherent bias here. If you are somehow able to get comfortable in the Tacoma it is still the dog of the bunch even against the quite old Ranger (it's a carry over international platform). Hell, if we're awarding blue ribbons on the basis of being tried and true and knowing what you're going to get let's just grab a 2019 Frontier and pop the celebratory champagne. Why not a 2011 Ranger even?

@@FiniteBlu I also would choose any other mid size truck over the Tacoma based on comfort alone. However, my issue with Edmunds and many other outlets like it is their lack of consistency. If you ding one brand because their truck is supposedly outdated then you have to ding all brands. Over the years I've watched as biased reporters blatantly listed incorrect payloads and towing capacities in some cases taking the max payload from one brads two wheel drive work truck and comparing to a competing brands off road spec model which we know always have lower payloads. Ride and handling may be a bit subjective but while the Tacoma doesn't trail that badly in handling it's still the worst and ride quality is mediocre. Compared to the refinement of the GMC or Nissan both the Ranger and Tacoma have got some catching up to do. None of them are bad trucks but if you're doing a comparison the only way to make the current Tacoma the winner over it's updated competition is to ignore the reality of that competition and apply your own brand bias.

The problem with the Ranger, is it's an ancient (2011 w/ 2015 refresh) model brought to the US from overseas just to have something in the segment. Literally, all they did to it was throw a metal bumper on it, because they can here. The interior is tight, you can clearly see that the screen in it is surrounded by a GIANT bezel, because why update the vehicle to fit the new infotainment system... and everywhere you look, you have cheap looking, hard, flat black plastic. For what you're paying for one of these the Lariat specific LED headlights should be standard, even European models get LED headlights standard. They could have at least tried to upgrade the interior to compete. At this point, it's just overpriced, poorly executed crap. The Canyon and Colorado are oldish, but provide better from and function over the Ranger. Tacoma, yeah it's circa 2016, yeah its interior is a bit tight and the head-unit looks like an afterthought... but, it holds its resale value, is reliable as hell, and for anyone looking to go off-road seems to have actually thought it through.
Nissan on the other hand... The old Frontier was basically 20 years old, had it a few times as a rental for work and god it was terrible. A car sized fuel tank, and sub 20 MPG. The new one looks better, and has at least been given new life.. but that build quality and their current reputation paired with them trying to make up profits with its current price... it's a hard pass. It's a shame they didn't do the Ridgeline because of it being unibody... It may start with a pretty high price tag, but the function, quality, and flexibility you get out of it make even a base AWD model a great choice for those in need of a comfortable daily driver that can handle some weekend home depot run duties.

As a long time Taco owner, I would agree with your assessment. Nissan has a winner in the new Frontier. However, Ford and Toyota are redesigning their mid size lineup. And RAM is bringing back the Dakota. It's gonna be an interesting market in the next couple of years.

Taco… I purchased a 2020 4X4 Sport here in Canada and I’m still enjoying it , especially the power drivers seat that was first introduced for the 2020 model year. I do find a the steering to be a bit vague but it is after all a truck and from you perch the view of the road ahead is good.
It’s very well built and very comfortable on long drives …I’m guessing it’s going to occupy a space in my garage for some time to come….and because of the crazy COVID used car pricing it’s worth more that I paid for it…not bad for a depreciating asset.

After lots of research and watching many videos comparing the mid sized trucks, I chose the Ranger. This is a replacement for my 2001 Nissan Frontier which at 202000+ miles still runs great to this day. Other than the usual maintenance items tires, brakes, battery, spark plugs etc.. the only other repairs were a water pump, radiator, and exhaust manifold. It has been a very reliable truck. I sat in a Toyota and just wasn't comfortable (I'm 5'8). I also sat in the new Nissan which was very comfortable as was the Chevy. While no truck is perfect, the Ford checked off most of the boxes for me, with MPG's being the best of all the mid sized. Im at 4000 miles with my 2022 and my best mileage so far has been 24.8 in mixed driving (hand calculated). Time will tell if it makes it to 200000 miles with minor repairs. Fingers crossed.

Bought a 2021 Colorado after working for Toyota for 2 years and I absolutely love it. Buy the taco if you off-road and don't care about city driving, buy the Colorado if you don't off road and want a more refined ride. Forget the others (Canyon and Colorado are obviously interchangeable here).

  • @caps741

I still like the Ranger. It's the weekend work truck for people that need something more than a light option like the Ridgeline or Hyundai Santa Cruz. Good gas mileage, good payload, and max towing of 7500lbs is great when you hit those weekend or vacation projects. With the Nissan jumping up in price, the Ranger is a great work truck option (unless someone is like me and they like the simple barebone style it has). If the Tacoma had higher payload and towing, or just better gas mileage, the Ranger wouldn't have a purpose. I Don't need a full size truck, so my options are numerous, and difficult. Love the Ranger, but the Tacoma is just so damn good. Frontier was an option before the jacked the price up.

I'm bouncing between the Ranger and the Colorado all the time. I've tried to buy both in the last few months. There the most capable and I've had the opportunity to test drive all 4 of these. Personally I feel like everything that the Frontier was tiring to do in the update. Ranger and the Colorado do better. The ride quality and felt worse comparing it to the others too right after one another. However the Tacoma felt like driving a truck from 2005 with a aftermarket digital display added on, with an awkward squashed interior. "Tacoma is just so damn good"? Personally just don't see it. I've been obsessed with research into midsize trucks. Deeper I go more I feel like Tacoma might actually be the worst all-around truck right now.

  • @beexiong2995
    @beexiong2995 2 роки тому

Tacoma's are wildly popular because of aftermarket support, overlanding builds, offroad capability, size isn't as big as its competitors so it's easier to park and maneuver, extemely reliable, and durable. You never almost see a stock tacoma on the road. It is an enthusiast vehicle for the masses.

The only thing bad about my ranger is the floaty feel, but throwing on the Fox shocks took care of it. Gets great gas mileage and tows better than any other midsize truck. Also off-roads very well, only out-classed by the TRD-Pro. Feels like you did it dirt especially when it has more space, power, better price, better towing capacity and better gas mileage than the Nissan and GMC. Just felt like you skipped over everything good about the ranger.

My buddy got a Toyota TRD and has had it back to the dealer several times. He drove my ranger and wishes he had purchased it. There all good trucks but I will never purchase a vehicle from a foreign company. Yeah I know Toyota employs American workers but the corporate profits go back to Japan. Same for Honda and Nissan. Also, once GM accepted obamas bail out and immediately went down the diversity hole they were out for me as well. I'm very happy with my truck and I will continue to support Ford.
