A coder is going through the leaked source code and fixing things _for_ Valve. They've already upped performance and framerate issues and small inconvenient bugs like hitboxes and are working on so much more. From my understanding, they've made the match making quicker, too.
They have a play-test version for download so you can help report bugs of their latest fixes to perfect the code before they send it to Valve, in hopes they will accept the work that was done for them for free. That video link up there goes into more detail.

Simply put, Valve is always a busy video game company. As Gaben once said, "these things, they take time."
I know this isn't really the place for it, but some ideas for new Heavy weapons I'd love to see include some kind of wooden and mechanical minigun (perhaps crank-based?) that can be used for medieval mode to make the Heavy more compatible with it, some kind of high-tech laser shooting minigun, a food/sandvich that temporarily makes the Heavy significantly more agile (if Pyro gets a jetpack then Heavy can get an agility boost too), and a sandvich that takes much, _much_ longer to both eat and recharge, but gives massive buffs to the Heavy for a short period of time after eating it.

I know I'm plugging this a lot recently but seriously this is the biggest hope in forever that tf2 will get an update that isn't localization or cosmetics and it's got my hyped.

And it's all because a fan is doing all the work of fixing their jumbled code that was leaked. They're making it run smoother, playable on potato PCs, patching glitches. And a whole lot of things they update into it everyday. Their updated version is available for download to play-test and help report bugs.
All that's left is for Valve to take notice of their work and pull a "change it up some so it doesn't look like you copied" on them or straight up use the fan's solutions.

It's a video detailing that a coder named mastercoms is fixing all the glitches (and things like framerate/performance issues) that they find in the leaked source code. They're trying to get Valve's attention for them to consider using the fixes that they're doing _for them_ for free.
They even have a play-test-able version with their latest fixes so players can report bugs and perfect the code fixes before sending them to Valve as suggestions.
Pyraffin huh. Neat.
Maybe if tf2 is sold to a company that really cares about the games
