this is for the parachute clip, they are not jumping without a chute those are the bags they keep them in so when they jump it pulls the chute out of the bag. look up old WW2 paratrooper clips you will see what am talking about. The fail here was the chute not coming out of the bag so the guy was just hanging there being towed by the plane.
They use zip ties that are designed to break when the chute separates from the bag. If the chute us packed wrong or the ties are out of spec they won't break, the chute holds and drags the trooper as you stated. He's supposed to execute a cut away and deploy his reserve, but he's probably injured or unconscious. I think the jump master is supposed to cut the static line but I'm not sure.
Are you sure that the fail wasn`t that the jumper got caught by one of the other lines flapping around? I have only jumped out of the sidedoors but jumping out of the back with all this stuff flying around always seemed dangerous to me.
@@mrd7067 yeah it does surprise me that a modern military unit is still using this method let alone doing it out of the back of the plan. At least the ww2 guys jumped out the side and the bags where left pinned to the side of the plane and not flapping around like crazy.
When you jump static line, there is a 20lb test string holding the four flaps closed that breakers first. Then as the trooper falls, the paradoxes start being pulled from bungee cord until those lines are tight. The next to break is the bottom of the parachute bag that stays with the static line. Not sure of the test strength but I think it's around 60lb. Anyways, this is the fail as the chute is supposed to feed out of the bag until at full length and then finally, the top of the chute that is tied to the bag lets go with another string, again not sure of the test weight. Once the chute is free the prop blast blows it to the rear and it starts to fill up as the trooper continues to drop. You would have to ask a rigger what test each of the strings are. As for the retrieval, once all jumpers are away they use a winch to pull in all the static lines with bags flapping. If a jumper gets caught up, they can try to cut away but if not, the use the winch because if they are unconscious and are cut away there is no automatic deployment of the reserve. It's up to the jumper to deploy it. There isn't alot of time to figure it out either as the main chute takes 250ft to open and we usually jump at 1000 so you have about 5 seconds to figure it out and get the reserve out or your landing awfull hard. Hope that explains it better.
