- Photographer Christiaan Phleger explains the basic use and setup of the Rollei 3.5 F, Hawaii Photo Rental's latest addition to their medium format lineup. The Rollei is a classic TLR (Twin Lens Reflex) camera which allows the photographer to shoot from the waist, in almost complete silence. 120 Film for the Rollei can be purchased in our shop through Imageworks, with labs on island still processing black & white, color negative, and slide.
Not many people know about that second magnifier. The Press photographers in the fifties and sixties loved this.
I just found one in my neighbors garbage this morning as I walking. Found your video..I had no idea what it was.
you often go for walks to your neighbors garage?
Silky smooth introduction into Rolleirealm, I can’t find my way out, and don’t want to. I cannot read enough- or learn enough about them, and you couldn’t make it look more cool. What an awesome video, complete magic, hyperbole, and captivating as anything else coming from our German Cousins!
I really enjoyed this video. I always wanted to own a Rolleiflex and once I got some of my other holy grails out of the way, this video put me over the edge and I got myself an early 2.8E which I'm totally in love with. Lots of good information here especially the reminder about that forward-reverse crank action!
If Rollei made a digital TLR today, I'd totally buy one. Could be amazing.
Interesting overview (ha ha). I have a 3.5F and it is a very flexible camera (I know...) which does handle well and is quick and easy to use. You can use it at eye level and focus without taking the eye off the framing. While the non optical finder frames conservatively, it is as bright as the scene. This is a great attribute. If you can see a subject, you can photograph it. This is a quiet camera in several meanings. Your setting is just lovely. Nice video and kudos to the presenter.
Hey James replying 6 years later looking for help. I was gifted a 2.8 by someone who clearly didn’t know the value (it was his dads but he knew I liked photography.) I haven’t shit film since pre 2010 so I used to just using my cameras light meter and being able to adjust based on on image previews. Having a baby and want to take pics of her with this camera.
TLDR: I just got a 2.8 without a light meter. Are you saying that I can ball park it just by looking down? Having a baby and want to take pics of her with this camera.
@@shrimpinpat Hi Patrick. I can't claim you can use the focussing screen as an extinction meter where you stop the lens down at a shutter speed which is keyed to the film speed and when the shadows drop pure black that is your shooting aperture, but you can know the approximate light for various interior settings, eg. north light through a window or direct light bounced from a light wall. Do you have to start with a meter, well, it's best to do that but you can also bracket a bit on a test roll and then just write down your settings by frame number and find the one that works. Natural light works wonders with portraits but you may well need a white card to reflect some light into the shadows. Nice to hear from you! I am still using my Rolleis, which are now a Wide, Tele and 3.5 and a SL66 kit. Still processing and printing on paper in a darkroom. The stuff looks as good as ever to my eyes. I get complements these days, no cash.
@@jamesjacocks6221 thank you so much. Hearing from someone with expertise on these is very helpful. I found an app for my phone that has really good reviews it was 10$ it’s a light meter app. Who knows if it’s accurate but it might help me get to a ballpark range. I have a roll coming in today to test before i spend time doing a deep clean on the camera. I plan on take photos of our baby whose due in a few. Might buy my own chemicals to develop the film. I haven’t done that since HS in like 2008/09, but it’s a fairly easy process just need the Chems really. Thank you for the reply! Means a lot thank you!
Patrick, you're very kind. I hope you get some great shots. You can practice by taking shots of your expectant. I still have some I took and my kids now have kids! Cheers!
Loved the video. I don't have a Rolleiflex but I do have a Yashicaflex 3.5 and in very many ways they are the same camera. I also loved seeing him using the Nikon F2. I have a big collection of both F and F2 cameras and lenses. very satisfying cameras to use.
Omg people. You tell me what video and audio gear You were using in 2013 and show me how good it was.
Awesome video thorough and concise, you know your stuff and the video quality is beautiful.
Mine doesn’t have a light meter. I was gifted a 2.8. Should I buy a light meter?
a great video, PS the one thing you didn't mention is that these rolleiflex models are a fixed lens, 80/75/100? not sure about the tele one!, so you need to get one camera for each focal length, but like some fujifilm x-pro2 and other fixed lens cameras, there are tele and wide filter adaptors, to increase usability of them.
Hi, I was just looking for info about using a flash on my Roleiflex? Any advice would be appreciated.
This is a superb video tutorial, even with that Buttafuoco hair.
very helpful thank you!
Thank you for the video it really helps alot. The only thing is, that the two knobs for aperture and shutter speed seem to be locked. Is there some way to unlock them or are they just stuck?
ok, nice video...now, how do you un-load the film?! I can't seem to find a video for that. Kinda crazy. :)
conguero76 You probably already know the answer by now...but if you don't, once you have shot your 12th and final exposure, just keep winding the crank until the entire film is transported to the take up spool, (the opposite spool to where you put your film in the first place). Be sure to wind it a good few times, you don't want to open the camera prematurely and exposure the film to light
The apex of mechanical cameras
🔥
Dudes a stud(;
Nice video
Where can buy flim for this camera and what kind of flim should I have to buy give me information please.
The size is called 120. You get it most places that sell film, just not the local drug store--anymore.
What flash shoe accessory you used?
Do you do your own darkroom work? Developing film and black. and white printing? Ugh!! G Nussbaum, Casselberry, Fl.
Very Helpful!!
Thank you for watching our video!
+Hawaii Camera Very interesting and well done! Thank you.
Could you please do one on how to do double exposures?? Thank you so much!
From the manual:
"For intentional multiple or trick exposures the double exposure prevention mechanism can be switched off (only will a roll of film in camera). After exposure move the release ring at base of crank in the direction of the arrow and then turn the crank one complete backward revolution until it stops. This cocks the shutter without advancing the film. This can be repeated for multiple exposures."
How to put it in B mode??
thanx
Hi there, what ground glass are you using? And also, what is the slr camera you are using in the beginning of the video? Thanks!
Looked like a black Nikon F Photomic TN to me.
Hi, thanks for the video:)
Do you use the regular classic film with this camera ?
Rachel Ak Any 120 film can be used. Kodak, Ilford or Fugi
This maybe a dumb question, but Do these cameras shoot video? Or just still photographs?
They do shoot video, you need adaptor
@@legionchef how are the videos? Are they as unique as the photographs?
Not that's what I call a spanking new mint looking camera!
Only me see Don Jonson? :)))
In the future, put a wind sock over the mic in the video camera. Too bad that Rollei did not make a TLR that had a 3 by 4 format.
they did !
Does it record video?
Nice video, but it is not Row-ly-flex, but Raw-lai-flex :)
Nigh-kon or Nee-kon, toh-mat-toe or Toe-may-toe, same same.
If you didn't include that annoying music, we might be able to hear you more clearly.
Deleted.Jennifer is right.sorry.:)
+Harry Stevens Would that matter with the Rolleiflex? You thread the film under the first roller and it senses the change in thickness in the paper when the film begins, which is what starts the counter.
Bad sound quality
Too much jumping around!
I lived on Maui 3 years, brought 3 cameras: Contax G1, Nikon N90s, and one of my Rollei TLRs, a 1945 with 3.5 Tessar used in May 45 at the Berghof, and Nuremberg Zeppelin Field.
That Rollei got the most use for personal pics, used Mamiya 7 as wedding photographer.
Too much talking, boring details. Nothing new or interesting.
waaay too hard to watch for an instructional video. I appreciate you making this, but why didn't you film indoors with a fixed video camera? This video has too much camera shake and background wind/bird noises for me to get much from it.
Good Blablabla.... Poor photographer...
